Abstract

For applications benefitting from the swelling properties of nanolayered silicates (clay minerals), it is of paramount importance to understand the hysteresis in the clay–water interaction. In this context, the present work investigates how the thermal history of Na+- and Li+-intercalated fluorohectorite affects the hydration process. By combining X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetric analysis, water adsorption of preheated and non-preheated fluorohectorite was measured and analyzed in terms of the characteristic interlayer distance. The number of water molecules per cation was also inferred. We find that some of the hydration states in preheated samples are suppressed, and transitions to higher hydration states are achieved at higher relative humidity values. This could be due to the initial water content that facilities crystalline swelling. However, the data for Li-fluorohectorite do not exclude the possibility of a low temperature Hofmann–Klemen effect at 150 °C. Our study also provides strong hints that the so-called 1.5 water layer state, observed in previous studies on smectites, is a metastable state. In addition, the impact of a hydrogenous structure in the interlayer space of Li-fluorohectorite on the clay’s hydration behavior is demonstrated. The results, if generalized, would have strong implications on a wide range of applications, where the thermal history of smectites is important.

Abstract

The high fiber content of cereal coproducts used in animal feed reduces the digestibility and nutrient availability. Therefore, the aim of this study was to elucidate the ability of two carbohydrase complexes to degrade the cell wall of wheat, maize, and rice during in vitrodigestion. One complex was rich in cell-wall-degrading enzymes (NSPase 1), and the other was similar but additionally enriched with xylanases and arabinofuranosidases (NSPase 2). Degradation of arabinoxylan, the main cereal cell wall polysaccharide, was followed directly by gas–liquid chromatography (GLC) and indirectly through phenolic acid liberation as quantified by liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS). The effect was additionally visualized using a unique multispectral autofluorescence approach. Wheat fractions, in particular aleurone, were susceptible to degradation as judged from the redistribution of arabinoxylan (25% reduction in insoluble arabinoxylan), whereas the highest relative liberation of ferulic acid was observed in rice bran (6%). All cereal fractions, except for maize, had a higher release of ferulic acid with NSPase 2 than NSPase 1 (38% in rice and wheat bran, 30% in wheat whole grain, and 28% in wheat aleurone). Thus, the carbohydrase complexes were able to degrade important cell wall components during in vitrodigestion but apparently through different mechanisms in wheat, maize, and rice.

Abstract

The heavy reliance on imported soybean meal (SBM) as a protein source makes it necessary for the European pig industry to search for alternatives and to develop pigs that perform efficiently when fed such ingredients. Digestion and metabolism are major physiological processes contributing to variation in feed efficiency. Therefore, an experiment was conducted to assess the effects of replacing SBM with increasing levels of rapeseed meal (RSM) in diets for young pigs on apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of energy and nutrients, nitrogen (N) balance, energy metabolism and carbohydrate, protein and fat oxidation. Four diets were fed to 32 pigs (22.7±4.1 kg initial BW) for three weeks. The diets consisted of a control cereal grain-SBM basal diet and three test diets where SBM and wheat were partially replaced with 10%, 20%, and 30% of expeller RSM. Increasing level of RSM in the diets linearly reduced ATTD of organic matter, CP, total carbohydrates, dietary fiber and energy. Utilization of digested nitrogen (DN) for N retention and total N excretion were not affected by RSM inclusion, however, RSM inclusion induced a shift in N excretion from urine to feces. Despite a linear increase in liver to metabolic BW ratio, heat production and utilization of metabolizable energy (ME) for retention were not affected by increasing RSM inclusion. In conclusion, replacing SBM with up to 30% of expeller RSM in nutritionally balanced diets for young pigs reduced the ATTD of most nutrients and energy, but did not affect N and energy retention in the body or efficiency of utilization of DN or ME for retention. Abstract

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of nutrient supply, plasma metabolites, and nutritional status of sows during the transition from gestation to lactation on performance of piglets during the colostral period and throughout lactation. Forty second-parity sows were fed 1 of 4 gestation diets containing a different quantity of dietary fiber (171 to 404 g/kg of DM) from mating until d 108 of gestation. From d 108 of gestation until weaning (d 28 of lactation), sows were fed 1 of 5 lactation diets with a different quantity of dietary fat [3 or 8% with different proportions of medium- (MCFA) and long-chain fatty acids (LCFA)]. Blood was obtained by jugular venipuncture on d 108 and 112 of gestation and on d 1 of lactation, and concentrations of plasma glucose, NEFA, lactate, acetate, propionate, butyrate, and fatty acids were analyzed. Piglet growth and mortality were noted throughout lactation. Piglet mortality during the colostral period (0 to 24 h) was affected by the lactation diets and was positively related to sow backfat (d 108) and plasma lactate (d 112) and negatively related to mean piglet birth weight (P < 0.05). Mean piglet live BW gain (LWG) was recorded in the periods 0 to 24 h, 7 to 10 d, 14 to 17 d, and 17 to 28 d relative to parturition as indirect measures of colostrum yield (0 to 24 h), milk yield in early lactation (d 7 to 10), and at peak lactation (d 14 to 17 and d 17 to 28). Effects of gestation and lactation diets on studied sow traits were tested on selected days during the transition period and the next lactation, and tested statistically on separate days. The LWG in the colostral period was positively correlated with mean piglet birth weight (P < 0.001), plasma concentrations of propionate and MCFA (P < 0.05), and plasma acetate and butyrate (P < 0.1) on d 1 of lactation. The LWG in early lactation was inversely correlated with plasma lactate on d 108 (P < 0.05), plasma glucose on d 112, and backfat thickness on d 108 (P < 0.10). The LWG at peak lactation was positively correlated with MCFA intake of the sow on d 113 to 115 and backfat thickness on d 108 during the transition, and negatively correlated with intake of LCFA and ME intake on d 108 to 112 (P < 0.05). In conclusion, feeding and body condition of sows during the transition from gestation to lactation is important for neonatal piglet survival, lactation performance of sows, and piglet growth during the next lactation.

Abstract

[abridged] We derive photometric redshifts from 17-band optical to mid-IR photometry of 74 robust counterparts to 68 of the 126 submillimetre galaxies (SMGs) selected at 870um by LABOCA observations in the ECDFS. The median photometric redshift of identified SMGs is z=2.2\pm0.1, the interquartile range is z=1.8-2.7 and we identify 10 (~15%) high-redshift (z>3) SMGs. We derive a simple redshift estimator for SMGs based on the 3.6 and 8um fluxes, which is accurate to Delta_z~0.4 for SMGs at z3 and hence ~30% of all SMGs have z>3. We estimate that the full S_870um>4mJy SMG population has a median redshift of 2.5\pm0.6. In contrast to previous suggestions we find no significant correlation between S_870um and redshift. The median stellar mass of the SMGs derived from SED fitting is (9.2\pm0.9)x10^10Msun and the interquartile range is (4.7-14)x10^10Msun, although we caution that uncertainty in the star-formation histories results in a factor of ~5 uncertainty in these stellar masses. The median characteristic dust temperature of SMGs is 35.9\pm1.4K and the interquartile range is 28.5-43.3K. The infrared luminosity function shows that SMGs at z=2-3 typically have higher far-IR luminosities and luminosity density than those at z=1-2. This is mirrored in the evolution of the star-formation rate density (SFRD) for SMGs which peaks at z~2. Abstract

We present radio and infrared (3.6-24um) counterparts to submillimetre galaxies (SMGs) detected in the Extended Chandra Deep Field South with the LABOCA 870-um bolometer camera on the 12-m Atacama Pathfinder Experiment. Using the Very Large Array at 1.4GHz and Spitzer we have identified secure counterparts to 79 of the 126 SMGs (SNR>3.7, S_870>4.4mJy) in the field, 62 via their radio and/or 24-um emission, the remainder using a colour-flux cut on IRAC 3.6- and 5.8-um sources chosen to maximise the number of secure, coincident radio and 24-um counterparts. In constructing our radio catalogue, we have corrected for the effects of `flux boosting', then used the corrected flux densities to estimate the redshifts of the SMGs based on the radio/submm spectral indices. The effect of the boosting correction is to increase the median redshift by 0.2 resulting in a value of z=2.2 (+0.7-0.8) (1-sigma errors) for the secure radio counterparts, in agreement with other studies, both spectroscopic and photometric., 25 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Abstract

Objective: Gamma-hydroxybutyric acid (GHB) has become a popular new drag of abuse in Sweden. The aim of the study is to present and focus on a new agent of abuse with potential social and medical risks including deaths in overdose. Methods: During a two-year period all cases of poisoning with GHB admitted to Sahlgrenska University Hospital were included in the study. Results: During the early nineties only a few cases presented each year. During 1998, 20 cases were admitted to our hospital and during 1999 that number was more than doubled. Most patients were men in their early twenties; several of them could be described as `bodybuilders'. Patients presented with drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, myoclonic seizures and coma. Coma normally lasted for 3-5 hours and then the patients suddenly awoke, normally without any sequelae. 10-20% react with mental confusion, agitation and violent acts causing a significant problem for healthcare staff. Respiratory arrest was noted in one patient and 3 patients presented cardiac arrhythmias requiring a pacemaker in one. All arrhythmias were transient and cardiac rhythm was normalized on the next morning. No deaths occurred in the hospital, but during the same period 2 deaths were observed in our city. Conclusion: Intoxication with GHB has dramatically increased in Sweden during the last few years. GHB overdose causes agitation, unconsciousness, respiratory depression and cardiac arrhythmias that may result in deaths. Knudsen K. Abstract

Objective: To study the incidence of cyanide poisoning among the dead and the survivors after a disastrous discotheque fire. Sixty-one patients died on the scene and 190 patients were brought to hospital. Two patients died after arrival at hospital. Methods: Patient data in the ICU and post-mortem examinations were evaluated to determine if cyanide poisoning contributed to morbidity and mortality. Cyanide concentrations were only measured among the dead (n = 61). Blood gases and clinical parameters were evaluated among the ICU patients. Results: Smoke inhalation injury, burn injuries and mental trauma were the main injuries. Two patients received treatment with hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) and two received treatment with hydroxocobalamin to prevent eventual cyanide poisoning. Post-mortem analysis determined carbon monoxide poisoning to be the cause of death in almost all victims. Mean COHb levels among the dead were 57% (17-80%). Mean cyanide levels were 0.76 [micro]g/g (0-2.10 [micro]g/g). Laboratory analysis including blood gases and clinical data in the patients treated at the intensive care unit did not indicate cyanide poisoning among the survivors. Conclusions: Carbon monoxide poisoning and smoke inhalation were the major toxicological threats in this indoor discotheque fire. Acute hypoxemia and hypercapnia contributed to deaths. Preventive treatment with hydroxocobalamin to avoid cyanide poisoning did not seem justified in this scenario. Knudsen K. Abstract

We have detected the CO(2–1) transition from the submillimetre galaxy (SMG) LESS J033229.4−275619 at z= 4.755 using the new Compact Array Broadband Backend system on the Australian Telescope Compact Array. These data have identified a massive gas reservoir available for star formation for the first time in an SMG at z~ 5.
