We present the X-ray properties and scaling relations of a flux-limited morphology-unbiased sample of 12 X-ray luminous galaxy clusters at redshift around 0.2 based on XMM-Newton observations. The scaled radial profiles are characterized by a self-similar behavior at radii outside the cluster cores (>0.2 r500) for the temperature, surface brightness, entropy, gas mass and total mass. The cluster cores contribute up to 70% of the bolometric X-ray luminosity. The X-ray scaling relations and their scatter are sensitive to the presence of the cool cores. Using the X-ray luminosity corrected for the cluster central region and the temperature measured excluding the cluster central region, the normalization agrees to better than 10% for the cool core clusters and non-cool core clusters, irrelevant to the cluster morphology. No evolution of the X-ray scaling relations was observed comparing this sample to the nearby and more distant samples. With the current observations, the cluster temperature and luminosity can be used as reliable mass indicators with the mass scatter within 20%. Mass discrepancies remain between X-ray and lensing and lead to larger scatter in the scaling relations using the lensing masses (e.g. ~40% for the luminosity--mass relation) than using the X-ray masses (<20%) due to the possible reasons discussed., Comment: 38 pages, 25 figures, 6 tables, A&A, in press (references updated)

With a primary goal of conducting precision weak lensing measurements from space, the COSMOS survey has imaged the largest contiguous area observed by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) to date using the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS). This is the first paper in a series where we describe our strategy for addressing the various technical challenges in the production of weak lensing measurements from the COSMOS data. The COSMOS ACS catalog is constructed from 575 ACS/WFC tiles (1.64 deg^2) and contains a total 1.2x10^6 objects to a limiting magnitude of F814W=26.5. This catalog is made publicly available. The shapes of galaxies have been measured and corrected for the distortion induced by the time varying ACS Point Spread Function and for Charge Transfer Efficiency effects. Next, simulated images are used to derive the shear susceptibility factors that are necessary in order to transform shape measurements into unbiased shear estimators. Finally, for each galaxy, we derive a shape measurement error and utilize this quantity to extract the intrinsic shape noise of the galaxy sample. Interestingly, our results indicate that the intrinsic shape noise varies little with either size, magnitude or redshift. Representing a number density of 66 galaxies per arcmin^2, the final COSMOS weak lensing catalog contains 3.9x10^5 galaxies with accurate shape measurements. ABRIDGED: We study the evolution since z~1 of the rest-frame B luminosity function of the early-type galaxies (ETGs) in ~0.7 deg^2 in the COSMOS field. In order to identify ALL progenitors of local ETGs we construct the sample of high-z galaxies using two complementary criteria: (i) A morphological selection based on the Zurich Estimator of Structural Types, and (ii) A photometric selection based on the galaxy properties in the (U-V)-M_V color-magnitude diagram. We furthermore constrain both samples so as to ensure that the selected progenitors of ETGs are compatible with evolving into systems which obey the mu_B-r_{hl} Kormendy relation. Assuming the luminosity evolution derived from studies of the fundamental plane for high-z ETGs, our analysis shows no evidence for a decrease in the number density of the most massive ETGs out to z~ 0.7: Both the morphologically- and the photometrically-selected sub-samples show no evolution in the number density of bright (~L>2.5L*) ETGs. Allowing for different star formation histories, and cosmic variance, we estimate a maximum decrease in the number density of massive galaxies at that redshift of ~30%. We observe, however, in both the photometrical and morphological samples, a deficit of up to ~2-3 of fainter ETGs over the same cosmic period. Our results argue against a significant contribution of recent dissipationless ``dry'' mergers to the formation of the most massive ETGs. We suggest that the mass growth in low luminosity ETGs can be explained with a conversion from z~0.7 to z=0 of blue, irregular and disk galaxies into low- and intermediate-mass ``red'' ETGs, possibly also through gas rich mergers., Comment: Replaced with accepted version (ApJ COSMOS special issue)

We have identified a large-scale structure at z~0.73 in the COSMOS field, coherently described by the distribution of galaxy photometric redshifts, an ACS weak-lensing convergence map and the distribution of extended X-ray sources in a mosaic of XMM observations. The main peak seen in these maps corresponds to a rich cluster with Tx= 3.51+0.60/-0.46 keV and Lx=(1.56+/-0.04) x 10^{44} erg/s ([0.1-2.4] keV band). We estimate an X-ray mass within $r500$ corresponding to M500~1.6 x 10^{14} Msun and a total lensing mass (extrapolated by fitting a NFW profile) M(NFW)=(6+/-3) x 10^15 Msun. We use an automated morphological classification of all galaxies brighter than I_AB=24 over the structure area to measure the fraction of early-type objects as a function of local projected density Sigma_10, based on photometric redshifts derived from ground-based deep multi-band photometry. We recover a robust morphology-density relation at this redshift, indicating, for comparable local densities, a smaller fraction of early-type galaxies than today. Interestingly, this difference is less strong at the highest densities and becomes more severe in intermediate environments. We also find, however, local "inversions'' of the observed global relation, possibly driven by the large-scale environment. In particular, we find direct correspondence of a large concentration of disk galaxies to (the colder side of) a possible shock region detected in the X-ray temperature map and surface brightness distribution of the dominant cluster. By combining HST imaging with optical (VIMOS) and near-infrared (SINFONI) integral field spectroscopy we exploit the gravitational potential of a massive, rich cluster at z=0.9 to study the internal properties of a gravitationally lensed galaxy at z=4.88. Using a detailed gravitational lens model of the cluster RCS0224-002 we reconstruct the source-frame morphology of the lensed galaxy on 200pc scales and find an ~L* Lyman-break galaxy with an intrinsic size of only 2.0x0.8kpc, a velocity gradient of <60km/s and an implied dynamical mass of 1.0x10^10Mo within 2kpc. We infer an integrated star-formation rate of just 12+/-2Mo/yr from the intrinsic [OII] emission line flux. The Ly-alpha emission appears redshifted by +200+/-40km/s with respect to the [OII] emission. The Ly-alpha is also significantly more extended than the nebular emission, extending over 11.9x2.4kpc. Over this area, the Ly-alpha centroid varies by less than 10km/s. By examining the spatially resolved structure of the [OII] and asymmetric Ly-alpha emission lines we investigate the nature of this system. The model for local starburst galaxies suggested by Mass-Hesse et al. (2003) provides a good description of our data, and suggests that the galaxy is surrounded by a galactic-scale bi-polar outflow which has recently burst out of the system. The outflow, which appears to be currently located >30kpc from the galaxy, is escaping at a speed of upto ~500km/s. Although the mass of the outflow is uncertain, the geometry and velocity of the outflow suggests that the ejected material is travelling far faster than escape velocity and will travel more than 1Mpc (comoving) before eventually stalling., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We summarise the current status of our project to identify and study z~6-10 galaxies thanks to strong gravitational lensing. Building on the detailed work from Richard et al. (2006), we present results from new follow-up observations (imaging) undertaken with ACS/HST and the Spitzer Space Telescope and compare our results with findings from the Hubble Ultra-Deep Field (UDF). These new observations are in agreement with the high-z nature for the vast majority of the candidates presented in Richard et al. (2006). We also discuss the properties of other optical dropout sources found in our searches and related objects (EROs, sub-mm galaxies,...) from other surveys., Comment: 6 pages, figs included. We present the results of a search for galaxy clusters in the first 36 XMM-Newton pointings on the COSMOS field. We reach a depth for a total cluster flux in the 0.5-2 keV band of 3x10-15 ergs cm-2 s-1, having one of the widest XMM-Newton contiguous raster surveys, covering an area of 2.1 square degrees. Cluster candidates are identified through a wavelet detection of extended X-ray emission. Verification of the cluster candidates is done based on a galaxy concentration analysis in redshift slices of thickness of 0.1-0.2 in redshift, using the multi-band photometric catalog of the COSMOS field and restricting the search to z<1.3 and i_AB < 25. We identify 72 clusters and derive their properties based on the X-ray cluster scaling relations. A statistical description of the survey in terms of the cumulative log(N>S)-lg(S) distribution compares well with previous results, although yielding a somewhat higher number of clusters at similar fluxes. The X-ray luminosity function of COSMOS clusters matches well the results of nearby surveys, providing a comparably tight constraint on the faint end slope of alpha=1.93+/-0.04. For the probed luminosity range of 8x10+42 - 2x10+44 ergs s-1, our survey is in agreement with and adds significantly to the existing data on the cluster luminosity function at high redshifts and implies no substantial evolution at these luminosities to z=1.3., Comment: 15 pages, to appear in the COSMOS Special Issue, ApJS 2007. [ABRIGED] We present the optical identification of a sample of 695 X-ray sources detected in the first 1.3 deg^2 of the XMM-COSMOS survey, down to a 0.5-2 keV (2-10 keV) limiting flux of ~10^-15 erg cm-2 s-1 (~5x10^-15 erg cm^-2 s-1). We were able to associate a candidate optical counterpart to ~90% (626) of the X-ray sources, while for the remaining ~10% of the sources we were not able to provide a unique optical association due to the faintness of the possible optical counterparts (I_AB>25) or to the presence of multiple optical sources within the XMM-Newton error circles. We also cross-correlated the candidate optical counterparts with the Subaru multicolor and ACS catalogs and with the Magellan/IMACS, zCOSMOS and literature spectroscopic data; the spectroscopic sample comprises 248 objects (~40% of the full sample). Our analysis reveals that for ~80% of the counterparts there is a very good agreement between the spectroscopic classification, the morphological parameters as derived from ACS data, and the optical to near infrared colors. About 20% of the sources show an apparent mismatch between the morphological and spectroscopic classifications. All the ``extended'' BL AGN lie at redshift <1.5, while the redshift distribution of the full BL AGN population peaks at z~1.5. Our analysis also suggests that the Type 2/Type 1 ratio decreases towards high luminosities, in qualitative agreement with the results from X-ray spectral analysis and the most recent modeling of the X-ray luminosity function evolution., Comment: 17 pages, ApJS COSMOS Special Issue, 2007 in press. We report on the stellar content of the COSMOS two degree field, as derived from a rigorous star/galaxy separation approach developed for using stellar sources to define the point spread function variation map used in a study of weak galaxy lensing. The catalog obtained in one filter from the ACS (Advanced Camera for Survey on the Hubble Space Telescope) is cross-identified with ground based multi-wavelength catalogs. The classification is reliable to magnitude $F_{814W}=24$ and the sample is complete even fainter. We construct a color-magnitude diagram and color histograms and compare them with predictions of a standard model of population synthesis. We find features corresponding to the halo subdwarf main sequence turnoff, the thick disk, and the thin disk. This data set provides constraints on the thick disk and spheroid density laws and on the IMF at low mass. We find no evidence of a sharp spheroid edge out to this distance. We identify a blue population of white dwarfs with counts that agree with model predictions. We find a hint for a possible slight stellar overdensity at about 22-34 kpc but the data are not strong enough at present to claim detection of a stream feature in the halo (abridged)., Comment: 32 pages, 13 figures, accepted in APJ Suppl COSMOS special issue, replaced by larger figures. The Cosmic Evolution Survey (COSMOS) is designed to probe the correlated evolution of galaxies, star formation, active galactic nuclei (AGN) and dark matter (DM) with large-scale structure (LSS) over the redshift range z $> 0.5 $ to 6. The survey includes multi-wavelength imaging and spectroscopy from X-ray to radio wavelengths covering a 2 $\sq$\deg area, including HST imaging. Given the very high sensitivity and resolution of these datasets, COSMOS also provides unprecedented samples of objects at high redshift with greatly reduced cosmic variance, compared to earlier surveys. Here we provide a brief overview of the survey strategy, the characteristics of the major COSMOS datasets, and summarize the science goals., Comment: 22 pages, 3 figures

The Cosmic Evolution Survey (COSMOS) was initiated with an extensive allocation (590 orbits in Cycles 12-13) using the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) for high resolution imaging. Here we review the characteristics of the HST imaging with the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) and parallel observations with NICMOS and WFPC2. A square field (1.8$\sq$\deg) has been imaged with single-orbit ACS I-F814W exposures with 50% completeness for sources 0.5\arcsec in diameter at I$_{AB} $ = 26.0 mag. The ACS imaging is a key part of the COSMOS survey, providing very high sensitivity and high resolution (0.09\arcsec FWHM, 0.05\arcsec pixels) imaging and detecting 1.2 million objects to a limiting magnitude of 26.5 (AB). These images yield resolved morphologies for several hundred thousand galaxies. The small HST PSF also provides greatly enhanced sensitivity for weak lensing investigations of the dark matter distribution., Comment: 21 pages, 6 figures -- to appear in COSMOS ApJ Suppl. special issue

zCOSMOS is a large redshift survey that is being undertaken in the COSMOS field using 600 hours of observation with the VIMOS spectrograph on the 8-m VLT. The survey is designed to characterise the environments of COSMOS galaxies from the 100 kpc scales of galaxy groups up to the 100 Mpc scale of the cosmic web and to produce diagnostic information on galaxies and active galactic nuclei. The zCOSMOS survey consists of two parts: (a) zCOSMOS-bright, a magnitude-limited I-band IAB < 22.5 sample of about 20,000 galaxies with 0.1 < z < 1.2 covering the whole 1.7 deg2 COSMOS ACS field and designed to mimic the parameters of the 2dfGRS; and (b) zCOSMOS-deep, a survey of approximately 10,000 galaxies selected through colour-selection criteria to have 1.4 < z < 3.0, within the central 1 deg2. This paper describes the survey design and the construction of the target catalogues, and briefly outlines the observational program and the data pipeline. In the first observing season, spectra of 1303 zCOSMOS-bright targets and of 977 zCOSMOS-deep targets have been obtained. These are briefly analysed to demonstrate the characteristics that may be expected from zCOSMOS, and particularly zCOSMOS-bright, when it is finally completed between 2008-2009. The power of combining spectroscopic and photometric redshifts is demonstrated, especially in correctly identifying the emission line in single-line spectra and in determining which of the less reliable spectroscopic redshifts are correct and which are incorrect. Our zCOSMOS-deep spectra demonstrate the effectiveness of our selection techniques to isolate high redshift galaxies at 1.4 < z < 3.0 and of VIMOS to measure their redshifts using ultraviolet absorption lines., Comment: 24 pages plus 16 figures. We present a reconstruction of the mass distribution of galaxy cluster Abell 1689 at z = 0.18 using detected strong lensing features from deep HST/ACS observations and extensive ground based spectroscopy. Earlier analyses have reported up to 32 multiply imaged systems in this cluster, of which only 3 were spectroscopically confirmed. In this work, we present a parametric strong lensing mass reconstruction using 24 multiply imaged systems with newly determined spectroscopic redshifts, which is a major step forward in building a robust mass model. In turn, the new spectroscopic data allows a more secure identification of multiply imaged systems. The resultant mass model enables us to reliably predict the redshifts of additional multiply imaged systems for which no spectra are currently available, and to use the location of these systems to further constrain the mass model. In particular, we have detected 5 strong galaxy-galaxy lensing systems just outside the Einstein ring region, further constraining the mass profile. Our strong lensing mass model is consistent with that inferred from our large scale weak lensing analysis derived using CFH12k wide field images. Thanks to a new method for reliably selecting a well defined background lensed galaxy population, we resolve the discrepancy found between the strong and weak lensing mass models reported in earlier work. We describe our ongoing program designed to measure the SN-Ia rate in a sample of massive z=0.5-0.9 galaxy clusters. The SN-Ia rate is a poorly known observable, especially at high z, and in cluster environments. The SN rate and its redshift dependence can serve as powerful discrimiminants for a number of key issues in astrophysics and cosmology. Our observations will put clear constraints on the characteristic SN-Ia ``delay time'', the typical time between the formation of a stellar population and the explosion of some of its members as SNe-Ia. Such constraints can exclude entire categories of SN-Ia progenitor models, since different models predict different delays. These data will also help to resolve the question of the dominant source of the high metallicity in the intracluster medium (ICM) - SNe-Ia, or core-collapse SNe from an early stellar population with a top-heavy IMF, perhaps those population III stars responsible for the early re-ionization of the Universe. Since clusters are excellent laboratories for studying enrichment (they generally have a simple star-formation history, and matter cannot leave their deep potentials), the results will be relevant for understanding metal enrichment in general, and the possible role of first generation stars in early Universal enrichment. (ABRIDGED) Motivated by the desire to reliably and automatically classify structure of thousands of COSMOS galaxies, we present ZEST, the Zurich Estimator of Structural Types. To classify galaxy structure, ZEST uses: (i) Five non-parametric diagnostics: asymmetry, concentration, Gini coefficient, 2nd-order moment of the brightest 20% of galaxy pixels, and ellipticity; and (ii) The exponent n of single--Sersic fits to the 2D surface brightness distributions. To fully exploit the wealth of information while reducing the redundancy present in these diagnostics, ZEST performs a principal component (PC) Analysis. We use a sample of ~56,000 I<24 COSMOS galaxies to show that the first three PCs fully describe the key aspects of the galaxy structure, i.e., to calibrate a three-dimensional classification grid of axis PC_1, PC_2, and PC_3. We demonstrate the robustness of the ZEST grid on the z=0 sample of Frei et al. (1996). The ZEST classification breaks most of the degeneracy between different galaxy populations that affects morphological classifications based on only some of the diagnostics included in ZEST. As a first application, we present the evolution since z~1 of the Luminosity Functions of COSMOS galaxies of early, disk and irregular galaxies and, for disk galaxies, of different bulge-to-disk ratios. Overall, we find that the LF up to a redshift z=1 is consistent with a pure-luminosity evolution (of about 0.95 magnitudes at z \~0.7). We highlight however two trends, that are in general agreement with a down-sizing scenario for galaxy formation: (1.) A deficit of a factor of about two at z~0.7 of MB>-20.5 structurally--classified early--type galaxies; and (2.) An excess of a factor of about three, at a similar redshift, of irregular galaxies., Comment: Accepted for publication in the ApJ COSMOS special issue. We report the discovery using Hubble Space Telescope imaging and Keck spectroscopy of a very bright, highly magnified (~30*) Lyman Break Galaxy (LBG) at z=3.07 in the field of the massive z=0.33 cluster MACSJ2135.2-0102. The system comprises two high-surface brightness arcs with a maximum extent of 3", bracketing a central object which we identify as a massive early-type galaxy at z=0.73. We construct a lens model which reproduces the main features of the system using a combination of a galaxy-scale lens and the foreground cluster. We show that the morphological, spectral and photometric properties of the arcs are consistent with them arising from the lensing of a single ~L* LBG. The most important feature of this system is that the lensing magnification results in an apparent magnitude of r=20.3, making this one of the brightest LBGs known. Such a high magnification provides the opportunity of obtaining very high signal to noise (and potentially spatially resolved) spectroscopy of a high redshift galaxy to study its physical properties. AIMS: We present data from the CFHTLS Strong Lensing Legacy Survey (SL2S). Due to the unsurpassed combined depth, area and image quality of the Canada-France-Hawaii Legacy Survey it is becoming possible to uncover a large, statistically well-defined sample of strong gravitational lenses which spans the dark halo mass spectrum predicted by the concordance model from galaxy to cluster haloes. METHODS: We describe the development of several automated procedures to find strong lenses of various mass regimes in CFHTLS images. RESULTS: The preliminary sample of about 40 strong lensing candidates discovered in the CFHTLS T0002 release, covering an effective field of view of 28 deg$^2$ is presented. These strong lensing systems were discovered using an automated search and consist mainly of gravitational arc systems with splitting angles between 2 and 15 arcsec. This sample shows for the first time that it is possible to uncover a large population of strong lenses from galaxy groups with typical halo masses of about $10^{13}h^{-1}M_\odot$. We discuss the future evolution of the SL2S project and its main scientific aims for the next 3 years, in particular our observational strategy to extract the hundreds of gravitational rings also present in these fields., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, A&A in press

Observing the first galaxies formed during the reionisation epoch, i.e. approximately within the first billion years after the Big Bang, remains one of the challenges of contemporary astrophysics. Several efforts are being undertaken to search for such remote objects. Combining the near-IR imaging power of the VLT and the natural effect of strong gravitational lensing our pilot program has allowed us to identify several galaxy candidates at redshift 6 <~ z <~ 10. The properties of these objects and the resulting constraints on the star formation rate density at high redshift are discussed. Our aim is to constrain the properties of dark matter halos inhabiting high density environments, such as is the case in massive galaxy clusters. We use galaxy-galaxy lensing techniques that utilize a maximum likelihood method to constrain the parameters of the lenses. It has been demonstrated that such a technique provides strong constraints on the parameters that characterize a galaxy halo, as well as on the aperture mass of these halos. In this analysis, we only use weak shear data and do not include strong lensing constraints. We present the results of a study of galaxy-galaxy lensing in a homogeneous sample of massive X-ray luminous clusters at z~0.2. These have been observed in three bands with the CFH12k instrument. We find dark matter halos in these clusters to be compact compared to those inferred around isolated field galaxies of equivalent luminosity at this redshift: the half mass radius is found to be smaller than 50 kpc, with a mean total mass of order 0.2 10^{12} M_sun. This is in good agreement with previous galaxy-galaxy lensing results and with numerical simulations, in particular with the tidal stripping scenario. We thus provide a strong confirmation of tidal truncation from a homogeneous sample of galaxy clusters. We study a sample of approximately 16,500 galaxies with I_AB <= 22.5 in the COSMOS field. Structural information on the galaxies is derived by fitting single Sersic models to their two-dimensional surface brightness distributions. We investigate the evolution of the number density of disk galaxies larger than 5 kpc between redshift z~1 and the present epoch. To this end, we use the measurements of the half-light radii to construct, as a function of redshift, the size function of both the total disk galaxy population and of disk galaxies split in four bins of bulge-to-disk ratio. Furthermore, we use a selected sample of roughly 1800 SDSS galaxies to calibrate our results with respect to the local universe. We find that: (i) The number density of disk galaxies with intermediate sizes (r_{1/2}~5-7 kpc) remains nearly constant from z~1 to today. (ii) The number density of the largest disks (r_{1/2}>7 kpc) decreases by a factor of about two out to z~1. (iii) There is a constancy in the number density of large bulgeless disks out to z~1; the deficit of large disks at early epochs seems to arise from a smaller number of bulged disks. Our results indicate that the bulk of the large disk galaxy population has completed its growth by z~1, and support the hypothesis that secular evolution processes produce - or at least add stellar mass to - the bulge components of disk galaxies., Comment: Accepted for publication in the ApJ COSMOS special issue. Gravitational lensing has now become a popular tool to measure the mass distribution of structures in the Universe on various scales. Here we focus on the study of galaxy's scale dark matter halos with galaxy-galaxy lensing techniques: observing the shapes of distant background galaxies which have been lensed by foreground galaxies allows us to map the mass distribution of the foreground galaxies. The lensing effect is small compared to the intrinsic ellipticity distribution of galaxies, thus a statistical approach is needed to derive some constraints on an average lens population. An advantage of this method is that it provides a probe of the gravitational potential of the halos of galaxies out to very large radii, where few classical methods are viable, since dynamical and hydrodynamical tracers of the potential cannot be found at this radii. We will begin by reviewing the detections of galaxy-galaxy lensing obtained so far. Next we will present a maximum likelihood analysis of simulated data we performed to evaluate the accuracy and robustness of constraints that can be obtained on galaxy halo properties. Then we will apply this method to study the properties of galaxies which stand in massive cluster lenses at z~0.2. The main result of this work is to find dark matter halos of cluster galaxies to be significantly more compact compared to dark matter halos around field galaxies of equivalent luminosity, in agreement with early galaxy-galaxy lensing studies and with theoretical expectations, in particular with the tidal stripping scenario. We thus provide a strong confirmation of tidal truncation from a homogeneous sample of galaxy clusters. (abridged) We present panoramic Spitzer MIPS 24um observations covering 9x9Mpc (25'x25') fields around two massive clusters, Cl0024+16 and MS0451-03, at z=0.39 and z=0.55. Our observations cover a very wide range of environments within these clusters, from high-density regions around the cores out to the turn-around radius. Cross-correlating the mid-infrared catalogs with deep optical and near-infrared imaging of these fields, we investigate the optical/near-infrared colors of the mid-infrared sources. We find excesses of mid-infrared sources with optical/near-infrared colors expected of cluster members in the two clusters and test this selection using spectroscopically confirmed 24um members. The much more significant excess is associated with Cl0024+16, whereas MS0451-03 has comparatively few mid-infrared sources. The mid-infrared galaxy population in Cl0024+16 appears to be associated with dusty star-forming galaxies (typically redder than the general cluster population by up to A_V~1-2 mags) rather than emission from dusty tori around active galactic nuclei (AGN) in early-type hosts. The inferred total-infrared star-formation rates in Cl0024+16 are typically >5x greater than those found from a similar Halpha survey, indicating significant obscured activity in the cluster population. We find evidence for strong evolution of the level of dust-obscured star-formation in dense environments out to z=0.5, analogous to the rise in fraction of optically-selected star-forming galaxies seen in clusters and the field out to similar redshifts. However, there are clearly significant cluster-to-cluster variations in the populations of mid-infrared sources, probably reflecting differences in the intracluster media and recent dynamical evolution of these systems., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We have searched for diffuse intracluster light in the galaxy cluster Abell 2667 (z=0.233) from HST images in three filters. We have applied to these images an iterative multi-scale wavelet analysis and reconstruction technique, which allows to subtract stars and galaxies from the original images. We detect a zone of diffuse emission south west of the cluster center (DS1), and a second faint object (ComDif), within DS1. Another diffuse source (DS2) may be detected, at lower confidence level, north east of the center. These sources of diffuse light contribute to 10-15% of the total visible light in the cluster. Whether they are independent entities or are part of the very elliptical external envelope of the central galaxy remains unclear. VLT VIMOS integral field spectroscopy reveals a faint continuum at the positions of DS1 and ComDif but do not allow to compute a redshift. A hierarchical substructure detection method reveals the presence of several galaxy pairs and groups defining a similar direction as the one drawn by the DS1-central galaxy-DS2 axis. The analysis of archive XMM-Newton and Chandra observations shows X-ray emission elongated in the same direction. The X-ray temperature map shows the presence of a cool core, a broad cool zone stretching from north to south and hotter regions towards the north east, south west and north west. This possibly suggests shock fronts along these directions produced by infalling material. These various data are consistent with a picture in which diffuse sources are concentrations of tidal debris and harassed matter expelled from infalling galaxies by tidal stripping and undergoing an accretion process onto the central cluster galaxy; as such, they are expected to be found along the main infall directions., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

We study the mass distribution of a sample of 24 X-ray bright Abell clusters through weak gravitational lensing. This method is independent of the dynamical state of the galaxy cluster. Hence, by comparing dynamical and lensing mass estimators, we can access the dynamical state of these clusters. We have found that clusters with ICM temperatures above 8 keV show strong deviations from the relaxation, as well as the presence of prominent sub-structures. For the remaining clusters (the majority of the sample) we have found agreement among the several mass estimators, which indicates that most of the clusters are in or close to a state of dynamical equilibrium., Comment: 2 pages, 2 figures. We present the identification of a bright submillimeter galaxy (SMG) in the field of Abell 2218. The galaxy has a spectroscopic redshift of ~4, and is currently the highest redshift SMG known. It is detected at all wavelengths from optical to submm, including the Spitzer IRAC bands. We discuss the properties of this galaxy, which is undergoing intense star formation at a rate~600 Msun/yr. We also compare the properties to those of radio-preselected submm-bright galaxies. The z~4 result extends the redshift distribution of SMGs., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, uses asp2004.sty. We have studied the infrared properties of the brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) located in the cores of X-ray-luminous clusters at 0.15 < z < 0.35. The majority of the BCGs are not particularly infrared-luminous compared with other massive early-type galaxies, suggesting that the cluster environment has little influence on the infrared luminosities of the BCGs. The exceptions, however, are the BCGs in the three X-ray-brightest clusters in the sample, A1835, Z3146, and A2390. These BCGs have a prominent far-infrared peak in their spectral energy distributions (SEDs), and two of them (those in A1835 and Z3146) can be classified as luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs: L_{IR} > 10^{11} L_{sun}). Although radio AGNs are found to be prevalent among the BCGs, the infrared luminosities of these three BCGs, judged from the infrared SED signatures, are likely to be powered by star formation. Considering the overall trend that clusters with shorter radiative gas cooling times harbor more infrared-luminous BCGs, the enhanced star formation may be caused by the cooling cluster gas accreting onto the BCGs., Comment: 35 pages, 8 figures, 4 tables; Accepted for publication in ApJ

We are currently undertaking a Spitzer GTO program to image ~30 massive lensing clusters at moderate redshift with both IRAC and MIPS. By taking advantage of the gravitatinoal lensing power of these clusters, we will study the population of faint galaxies that are below the nominal Spitzer detection limits. We exploit the gravitational potential of massive cluster lenses to probe the emission line properties of six z=1 galaxies which appear as highly magnified luminous arcs. Using the GMOS integral field spectrograph together with detailed cluster lens models we reconstruct the intrinsic morphologies and two-dimensional velocity fields in these galaxies on scales corresponds to \~0.5kpc (unlensed) at z=1. Four of the galaxies have stable disk-like kinematics, whilst the other two resemble interacting or starburst galaxies. These galaxies lie close to the mean rest-frame I-band Tully-Fisher relation for nearby spirals suggesting a clear preference for hierarchical growth of structure. In the rest-frame B-band, the observations suggest 0.5+/-0.3mag of brightening, consistent with increased star-formation activity at z=1. However, the galaxies with stable disk kinematics have more slowly rising rotation curves than expected from galaxies with similar surface brightness in the local Universe. We suggest that this may arise because the distant galaxies have lower bulge masses than their local counter-parts. Whilst this study is based on only six galaxies, the gain in flux and in spatial resolution achieved via gravitational magnification provides a much more detailed view of the high redshift Universe than possible with conventional surveys., Comment: 15 pages. Extracting sources with low signal-to-noise from maps with structured background is a non-trivial task which has become important in studying the faint end of the submillimetre number counts. In this article we study source extraction from submillimetre jiggle-maps from the Submillimetre Common-User Bolometer Array (SCUBA) using the Mexican Hat Wavelet (MHW), an isotropic wavelet technique. As a case study we use a large (11.8 arcmin^2) jiggle-map of the galaxy cluster Abell 2218, with a 850um 1sigma r.m.s. sensitivity of 0.6-1mJy. We show via simulations that MHW is a powerful tool for reliable extraction of low signal-to-noise sources from SCUBA jiggle-maps and nine sources are detected in the A2218 850um image. Three of these sources are identified as images of a single background source with an unlensed flux of 0.8mJy. Further, two single-imaged sources also have unlensed fluxes <2mJy, below the blank-field confusion limit. In this ultradeep map, the individual sources detected resolve nearly all of the extragalactic background light at 850um, and the deep data allow to put an upper limit of 44 sources per arcmin^2 to 0.2mJy at 850um., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures. (abridged) We present extensive multi-color imaging and low resolution VIMOS Integral Field Unit spectroscopic observations of the X-ray luminous cluster Abell 2667 (z=0.233). An extremely bright giant gravitational arc (z=1.0334) is easily identified as part of a triple image system and other fainter multiple images are also revealed by the HST-WFPC2 images. The VIMOS-IFU observations cover a field of view of 54'' x 54'' and enable us to determine the redshift of all galaxies down to V=22.5. Furthermore, redshifts could be identified for some sources down to V=23.2. In particular we identify 21 cluster members in the cluster inner region, from which we derive a velocity dispersion of \sigma=960 km/s, corresponding to a total mass of 7.1 x 10^{13} solar masses within a 110 kpc radius. Using the multiple images constraints and priors on the mass distribution of cluster galaxy halos we construct a detailed lensing mass model leading to a total mass of 2.9 x 10^{13} solar masses within the Einstein radius (16 arcsec). The lensing mass and dynamical mass are in good agreement although the dynamical one is much less accurate. Comparing these measurements with published X-ray analysis, is however less conclusive. Although the X-ray temperature matches the dynamical and lensing estimates, the published NFW mass model derived from the X-ray measurement with its small concentration of c ~3 can not account for the large Einstein radius observed in this cluster. A larger concentration of ~6 would however match the strong lensing measurements. These results are likely reflecting the complex structure of the cluster mass distribution, underlying the importance of panchromatic studies from small to large scale in order to better understand cluster physics., Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures. We summarize the main results obtained recently by our group on the identification and study of very high-z galaxies (z>7) using lensing clusters as natural gravitational telescopes. A description of our pilot survey with ISAAC/VLT is presented, aimed at the spectroscopic confirmation of z>7 candidate galaxies photometrically selected from deep near-IR, HST and optical ground-based imaging. The first results issued from this survey are discussed, in particular the global photometric properties of our high-z candidates, and the implications for the global star formation rate at very high-z., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures. We present the ZEN (z equals nine) survey: a deep, narrow J-band search for proto-galactic Lya emission at redshifts z=9. In the first phase of the survey, dubbed ZEN1, we combine an exceptionally deep image of the Hubble Deep Field South, obtained using a narrow band filter centred on the wavelength 1.187 microns, with existing deep, broad band images covering optical to near infrared wavelengths. Candidate z=9 Lya-emitting galaxies display a significant narrow band excess relative to the Js-band that are undetected at optical wavelengths. We detect no sources consistent with this criterion to the 90% point source flux limit of the NB image, F_NB = 3.28e-18 ergs/s/cm2. The survey selection function indicates that we have sampled a volume of approximately 340 h^{-3} Mpc3 to a Lya emission luminosity of 10e43 h^{-2} ergs/s. When compared to the predicted properties of z=9 galaxies based upon no evolution of observed z=6 Lya-emitting galaxies, the `volume shortfall' of the current survey, i.e. the volume required to detect this putative population, is a factor of at least 8 to 10. We report on new high-resolution near-infrared images of the gravitationally lensed radio source PKS1830-211, a quasar at z=2.507. These adaptive optics observations, taken with the Very Large Telescope (VLT), are further improved through image deconvolution. They confirm the presence of a second object along the line of sight to the quasar, in addition to the previously known spiral galaxy. This additional object is clearly extended in our images. However, its faint luminosity does not allow to infer any photometric redshift. If this galaxy is located in the foreground of PKS1830-211, it complicates the modeling of this system and decreases the interest in using PKS1830-211 as a means to determine H0 via the time delay between the two lensed images of the quasar., Comment: Accepted in A&A Letters

In this paper we present results from an IRAM Plateau de Bure millimetre-wave Interferometer (PdBI) survey for CO emission towards radio-detected submillimetre galaxies (SMGs) with known optical and near-infrared spectroscopic redshifts. Five sources in the redshift range z~1-3.5 were detected, nearly doubling the number of SMGs detected in CO. We summarise the properties of all 12 CO-detected SMGs, as well as 6 sources not detected in CO by our survey, and use this sample to explore the bulk physical properties of the SMG population as a whole. The median CO line luminosity of the SMGs is = (3.8 +- 2.0) x 10^10 K km/s pc^2. Using a CO-to-H_2 conversion factor appropriate for starburst galaxies, this corresponds to a molecular gas mass = (3.0 +- 1.6) x 10^10 Msun within a ~2kpc radius, about four times greater than the most luminous local ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) but comparable to that of the most extreme high-redshift radio galaxies and QSOs. The median CO fwhm linewidth is broad, = 780 +- 320 km/s, and the SMGs often have double peaked line profiles, indicative of either a merger or a disk. From their median gas reservoirs (~3 x 10^10 Msun) and star-formation rates (>700 Msun/yr) we estimate a lower limit on the typical gas-depletion time scale of >40Myr in SMGs. This is marginally below the typical age expected for the starbursts in SMGs, and suggests that negative feedback processes may play an important role in prolonging the gas consumption time scale. We find a statistically-significant correlation between the far-infrared and CO luminosities of the SMGs which extends the observed correlation for local ULIRGs to higher luminosities and higher redshifts. We report the detection of a z~7 galaxy strongly lensed by the massive galaxy cluster Abell 2218 (z=0.175) at 3.6 and 4.5 um using the Spitzer Observatory and at 1.1 um using the Hubble Space Telescope. The new data indicate a refined photometric redshift in the range of 6.6-6.8 depending on the presence of Ly-alpha emission. The spectral energy distribution is consistent with having a significant Balmer break, suggesting that the galaxy is in the poststarburst stage with an age of at least ~50 Myr and quite possibly a few hundred Myr. This suggests the possibility that a mature stellar population is already in place at such a high redshift. Compared with typical Lyman break galaxies at z~3-4, the stellar mass is an order of magnitude smaller (~10^{9} Msun), but the specific star formation rate (star formation rate/M_{star}) is similarly large (> 10^{-9} yr^{-1}), indicating equally vigorous star-forming activity., Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures, 2 tables; Accepted for publication in ApJL

We review in this paper the main results recently obtained on the identification and study of very high-z galaxies usinglensing clusters as natural gravitational telescopes. We present in detail our pilot survey with ISAAC/VLT, aimed at the detection of z>7 sources. Evolutionary synthesis models for extremely metal-poor and PopIII starbursts have been used to derive the observational properties expected for these high-z galaxies, such as expected magnitudes and colors, line fluxes for the main emission lines, etc. These models have allowed to define fairly robust selection criteria to find z~7-10 galaxies based on broad-band near-IR photometry in combination with the traditional Lyman drop-out technique. The first results issued from our photometric and spectroscopic survey are discussed, in particular the preliminary confirmation rate, and the global properties of our high-z candidates, including the latest results on the possible z=10.0 candidate A1835-1916. The search efficiency should be significantly improved by the future near-IR multi-object ground-based and space facilities. The massive cluster of galaxies Abell 2219 (z = 0.228) was observed at 14.3 $\mu$m with the Infrared Space Observatory and results were published by Barvainis et al. (1999). These observations have been reanalyzed using a method specifically designed for the detection of faint sources that had been applied to other clusters. Five new sources were detected and the resulting cumulative total of ten sources all have optical counterparts. The mid-infrared sources are identified with three cluster members, three foreground galaxies, an Extremely Red Object, a star and two galaxies of unknown redshift. The spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of the galaxies are fit with models from a selection, using the program GRASIL. Best-fits are obtained, in general, with models of galaxies with ongoing star formation. For three cluster members the infrared luminosities derived from the model SEDs are between ~5.7x10^10 Lsun and 1.4x10^11 Lsun, corresponding to infrared star formation rates between 10 and 24 Msun yr^-1. The two cluster galaxies that have optical classifications are in the Butcher-Oemler region of the color-magnitude diagramme. The three foreground galaxies have infrared luminosities between 1.5x10^10 Lsun and 9.4x10^10 Lsun yielding infrared star formation rates between 3 and 16 Msun yr^-1. Two of the foreground galaxies are located in two foreground galaxy enhancements (Boschin et al. 2004). Including Abell 2219, six distant clusters of galaxies have been mapped with ISOCAM and luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs) have been found in three of them. We present the weak lensing methodology applied to our multi-colour imaging survey of X-ray luminous galaxy clusters conducted with the wide field CFH12k camera. This method, which is converting a fully reduced CFH12k image into cluster mass constraints, is done in two steps that we explain in detail: (1) determination of the "true" shape of faint (lensed) galaxies which involves: object detection strategy, point spread function (PSF) determination, galaxy shapes measurements with errors; (2) conversion of the faint galaxies catalogue into useful mass constraints which is done by different lensing techniques using 1D and/or 2D mass estimates. Finally, we compare the cluster mass model to the light distribution of cluster members as observed on our imaging data. To illustrate the method, we apply it to the well studied cluster Abell 1689 (z=0.184). In this cluster, we detect the gravitational shear signal to the edge of the image at 3 sigma significance. The two-dimensional mass reconstruction has a ~10 sigma significance mass peak centered on the brightest cluster galaxy. The weak lensing constraints are well fitted by a NFW mass profile with $M_{200} = 14.1^{+6.3}_{-4.7}\times 10^{14} M_\sun$, and $c = 3.5^{+0.5}_{-0.3}$ (chi^2=0.33), or by a power law (PL) profile with q=0.75 +- 0.07 and theta_E = 14.6"+-0.3" (chi^2=0.64). The mass-to-light ratio is found to be almost constant with radius with a mean value of M/L_R = 150 h (M/L)_\sun. We compare these results to other weak lensing analyses of Abell 1689 presented in the literature and find good agreements in terms of the shear measurement as well as the final mass estimate., Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures. We observed the cluster Abell 2218 (z=0.175), with ISOCAM on board the Infrared Space Observatory, using two filters with reference wavelengths of 6.7 and 14.3 microns. We detected 67 extragalactic mid-infrared sources. Using the ``GRASIL'' models of Silva et al. (1998) we have obtained acceptable and well constrained fits to the observed spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of 41 of these sources, for which additional optical/near-infrared magnitudes, and, in some cases, redshifts, were available. We have then determined the total infrared luminosities and star formation rates (SFRs) of these 41 sources, of which 27 are cluster members and 14 are field galaxies at a median redshift z~0.6. The SEDs of most of the ISOCAM cluster members are best fit by models with negligible star formation in the last ~1 Gyr. The 7 faintest cluster members have a slightly higher, but still very mild, star-formation activity. The ISOCAM-selected cluster galaxies appear to be an unbiased subsample of the overall cluster population. If A2218 is undergoing a merger, as suggested by some optical and X-ray analyses, then this merger does not seem to affect the mid-infrared properties of its galaxies. The SEDs of most ISOCAM-selected field sources are best fit by models with significant ongoing (and recent) star formation, resembling those of massive star-forming spirals or (post)starburst galaxies. In this paper we present new ESO/VLT FORS1 and ISAAC images of the fields around eight gravitationally lensed quasars: CTQ414, HE0230-2130, LBQS1009-0252, B1030+074, HE1104-1805, B1359+154, H1413+117 and HE2149-2745. When available and deep enough, HST/WFPC2 data were also used to infer the photometric redshifts of the galaxies around the quasars. The search of galaxy overdensities in space and redshift, as well as a weak-shear analysis and a mass reconstruction are presented in this paper. We find that there are most probably galaxy groups towards CTQ414, HE0230-2130, B1359+154, H1413+117 and HE2149-2745, with a mass ~ 4x10^14 M_sol h^-1. Considering its photometric redshift, the galaxy group discovered in the field around HE1104-1805 is associated with the quasar rather than with the lensing potential., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures(.jpg)

We report the discovery of a transient source in the central regions of galaxy cluster Abell 267. The object, which we call "PALS1", was found in a survey aimed at identifying highly-magnified Lyman-break galaxies in the fields of intervening rich clusters. At discovery, the source had U>24.7 (2-sigma; AB), g=21.96, and very blue g-r and r-i colors; i.e., PALS1 was a U-band drop-out, characteristic of star-forming galaxies and quasars at z~3. However, three months later the source had faded by more than three magnitudes. Further observations showed a continued decline in luminosity, to R>26.4 seven months after discovery. Though the apparent brightness is suggestive of a supernova at roughly the cluster redshift, we show that the photometry and light curve argue against any known type of supernova at any redshift. The spectral energy distribution and location near the center of a galaxy cluster are consistent with the hypothesis that PALS1 is a gravitationally-lensed transient at z~3.3. If this interpretation is correct, the source is magnified by a factor of 4-7 and two counterimages are predicted. Our lens model predicts time delays between the three images of 1-10 years and that we have witnessed the final occurrence of the transient. The intense luminosity (M(AB) ~ -23.5 after correcting for lensing) and blue UV continuum (implying T>50,000 K) argue the source may have been a flare resulting from the tidal disruption of a star by a 10^6-10^8 solar-mass black hole. We present BAX, Base de Donnees Amas de Galaxies X (http://webast.ast.obs-mip.fr/bax), a multi-wavelength database dedicated to X-ray clusters and groups of galaxies allowing detailed information retrieval. BAX is designed to support astronomical research by providing access to published measurements of the main physical quantities and to the related bibliographic references: basic data stored in the database are cluster/group identifiers, equatorial coordinates, redshift, flux, X-ray luminosity (in the ROSAT band) and temperature, and links to additional linked parameters (in X-rays, such as spatial profile parameters, as well as SZ parameters of the hot gas, lensing measurements,and data at other wavelengths, such as optical and radio). The clusters and groups in BAX can be queried by the basic parameters as well as the linked parameters or combinations of these. We expect BAX to become an important tool for the astronomical community. BAX will optimize various aspects of the scientific analysis of X-ray clusters and groups of galaxies, from proposal planning to data collection, interpretation and publication, from both ground based facilities like MEGACAM (CFHT), VIRMOS (VLT) and space missions like XMM-Newton, Chandra and Planck., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics Journal. We present a new SCUBA image of the cluster MS0451.6-0305, which exhibits strong, extended sub-mm flux at 850 microns. The most striking feature in the map is an elongated region of bright sub-mm emission, with a flux density of >10 mJy over several beam-sizes. This region is apparently coincident with a previously known optical arc (which turns out to be a strongly lensed Lyman Break Galaxy at z=2.911), as well as with a newly identified multiply-imaged ERO (Extremely Red Object) pair predicted to be at a similar, if not identical redshift. By combing a detailed lensing model with deep images from HST, Chandra, CFHT, JCMT, and spectra from the VLT, we conclude that both the strongly lensed optical arc and ERO systems have properties consistent with known sub-mm emitters. Using a simple model for the two sources, we estimate that the multiply-lensed EROs contribute the majority of the flux in the SCUBA lensed arc. Correcting for the lensing amplification, we estimate that the inherent 850 micron fluxes for both objects are ~0.4 mJy. If the LBG and ERO pair are truly at the same redshift, then they are separated by only ~10 kpc in the source plane, and hence constitute an interacting system at z~2.9. Higher angular resolution observations in sub-mm/mm will permit us to more accurately separate the contribution from each candidate, and better understand the nature of this system., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 10 pages, 7 figures (1 in colour). We present the first results of a project aiming to derive the physical properties of high-redshift lensed galaxies, intrinsically fainter than the Lyman break galaxies currently observed in the field. From FORS and ISAAC spectroscopy on the VLT, we use the full rest-frame UV-to-optical range to derive the physical properties (SFR, extinction, chemical abundances, dynamics, mass, etc) of low-luminosity z ~ 2 star-forming galaxies. Although the sample is still too small for statistical studies, these results give an insight into the nature and evolutionary status of distant star-forming objects and their link with present-day galaxies. We present the first results obtained from our pilot ultra-deep near-IR survey with ISAAC/VLT, aimed at the detection of z>7 sources using lensing clusters as natural Gravitational Telescopes. Evolutionary synthesis models of PopIII and extremely metal-poor starbursts have been used to derive observational properties expected for these high-z galaxies, such as expected magnitudes and colors, line fluxes for the main emission lines, etc. These models have allowed us to define fairly robust selection criteria to find z~ 7-10 galaxies based on broad-band near-IR photometry in combination with the traditional Lyman drop-out technique. The magnification in the core of lensing clusters improves the search efficiency and subsequent spectroscopic follow up. The method used to identify sources and the first results obtained are presented, in particular the first spectroscopic confirmation of a z=10 candidate. We report the first likely spectroscopic confirmation of a z 10.0 galaxy from our ongoing search for distant galaxies with ISAAC/VLT. Galaxy candidates at z >~ 7 are selected from ultra-deep JHKs images in the core of gravitational lensing clusters for which deep optical imaging is also available, including HST data. The object reported here, found behind Abell 1835, exhibits a faint emission line detected in the J band, leading to z=10.0 when identified as Ly-a, in excellent agreement with the photometric redshift determination. Redshifts z < 7 are very unlikely for various reasons we discuss. The object is located on the critical lines corresponding to z=9 to 11. The magnification factor \mu ranges from 25 to 100. For this object we estimate SFR(Ly-a) (0.8-2.2) Msun/yr and SFR(UV) (47-75) Msun/yr, both uncorrected for lensing. The steep UV slope indicates a young object with negligible dust extinction. SED fits with young low-metallicity stellar population models yield (adopting mu=25) a lensing corrected stellar mass of M*~8.e+6 Msun, and luminosities of 2.e+10 Lsun, corresponding to a dark matter halo of a mass of typically M_tot>~ 5.e+8 Msun. In general our observations show that under excellent conditions and using strong gravitational lensing direct observations of galaxies close to the ``dark ages'' are feasible with ground-based 8-10m class telescopes., Comment: To be published in A&A, Vol. 416, p. In this Letter we present a detailed study of the lensing configuration in the cluster Abell 2218. Four multiple-images systems with measured spectroscopic redshifts have been identified in this cluster. These multiple images are very useful to constrain accurately the mass distribution in the cluster core, but they are also sensitive to the value of the geometrical cosmological parameters of the Universe. Using a simplified maximum likelihood analysis we find 0 < Omega_M < 0.30 assuming a flat Universe, and 0 < Omega_M < 0.33 and w < -0.85 for a flat Universe with dark energy. Interestingly, an Einstein-de Sitter model is excluded at more than 4sigma. These constraints are consistent with the current constraints derived with CMB anisotropies or supernovae studies. The proposed method constitutes an independent test of the geometrical cosmological parameters of the Universe and we discuss the limits of this method and this particular application to Abell 2218. Application of this method with more sophisticated tools and to a larger number of clusters or with more multiple images constraints, will put stringent constraints on the geometrical cosmological parameters., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures. Observations of the core of the massive cluster Cl 0024+1654, at a redshift z=0.39, were obtained with the Infrared Space Observatory using ISOCAM at 6.7 mum and 14.3 mum (hereafter 15 mum). Thirty five sources were detected at 15 mum and thirteen of them are spectroscopically identified with cluster galaxies. The remaining sources consist of four stars, one quasar, one foreground galaxy, three background galaxies and thirteen sources with unknown redshift. The ISOCAM sources have best-fit SEDs typical of spiral or starburst models observed 1 Gyr after the main starburst event. The median infrared luminosity of the twelve cluster galaxies is 1.0x10^11 Lsun, with 10 having infrared luminosity above 9x10^10 Lsun, and so lying near or above the 1x10^11 Lsun threshold for identification as a luminous infrared galaxy (LIRG). The [OII] star formation rates obtained for 3 cluster galaxies are one to two orders of magnitude lower than the infrared values, implying that most of the star formation is missed in the optical because it is enshrouded by dust in the starburst galaxy. The counterparts of about half of the 15 mum cluster sources are blue, luminous, star-forming systems and the type of galaxy that is usually associated with the Butcher-Oemler effect. Dust obscuration may be a major cause of the 15 mum sources appearing on the cluster main sequence. The majority of the ISOCAM sources in the Butcher-Oemler region of the colour-magnitude diagram are best fit by spiral-type SEDs whereas post-starburst models are preferred on the main sequence, with the starburst event probably triggered by interaction with one or more galaxies. We report the discovery of an unusual emission line galaxy at redshift z=1.68 found from near-IR imaging and spectroscopic observations with ISAAC/VLT of a faint gravitationally lensed R-band drop-out behind the lensing cluster Abell 1835. From the emission lines of [O_III], and H_beta this galaxy shows a moderate to high excitation and line equivalent widths typical of relatively metal-poor HII galaxies. Its apparent J magnitude translates to an absolute B-band magnitude M_B ~ -16.4 once corrected for a gravitational magnification of 1.8 magnitudes. This makes it one of the faintest intermediate redshift galaxiesknown so far. From the presence of emission lines and the available VRIJHK photometry we determine constraints on its dominant stellar population. The only viable fit found is for a fairly young (~ 6-9 Myr) burst suffering from a considerable extinction (A_v ~ 1.2-1.8 mag). We find that this object resembles strongly HII galaxies and intermediate redshift compact emission line galaxies, albeit suffering from a larger extinction than usual. We present an analysis of 7 clusters observed by XMM as part of our survey of 17 most X-ray luminous clusters of galaxies at z=0.2 selected for a comprehensive and unbiased study of the mass distribution in massive clusters. Using public software, we have set up an automated pipeline to reduce the EPIC MOS & pn spectro-imaging data, optimized for extended sources analysis. We also developped a code to perform intensive spectral and imaging analysis particularly focussing on proper background estimate and removal. XMM deep spectro-imaging of these clusters allowed us to fit a standard beta-model to their gas emission profiles as well as a standard MEKAL emission model to their extracted spectra, and test their inferred characteristics against already calibrated relations., Comment: 6 pages; accepted by Advances in Space Research: Session "New X-ray Results from Clusters of Galaxies and Black Holes", eds.
