The paper examines industrial relations in the shipping industries of two Liberal Market Economies (LMEs), Australia and the United States and in two Coordinated Market Economies (CMEs), Germany and Denmark. Hall and Soskice's (2001) theory of Liberal versus Coordinated market economies has been used to discuss two polar approaches to the issue of reform in industrial relations in the context of globalisation pressures. The scope to which local institutional factors offset the major trend towards the 'globalisation' of the shipping labour market is assessed by discussing the role of state policies on shipping, trade unions, and employer organisations. The paper argues that in shipping two distinctly different policy approaches and reforms of industrial relations at the industry and national levels can be identified. The paper delivers empirical evidence to the understanding of industrial relations differences in liberal and coordinated market economies.

The role of national tax system in the consolidation and revitalization of strategic HRM in the German shipping industry, with management functions being outsourced is presented. The study reveals that the new shipping, tax and HRM policy of the German government enables firms in reversing a trend towards outsourcing management functions to overseas locations.

JANUARY 6, 2022 Unlike rather known concept of "climate" justice, the idea of "carbon" justice is so advanced that it does not even have a Wikipedia entry, yet. In one of Australia's key resource states -Queensland- this state's government receives a meagre 7% of the state's budget from coal royalties - inconsequential. Beyond that, carbon justice places mining corporations that have dug up coal in Australia and Australia's government at the centre because that coal was mined in Australia, and not somewhere else. In a recent article entitled `The Erosion of Industrial Relations in Germany', Anke Hassel (1999) claimed that German industrial relations have been eroded during the last two decades. This paper questions the argument, maintaining that Germany's basic industrial relations system remains intact and that the major changes in Germany relate to unification and the public sector.

The employment of Kiribati Seafarers on German owned and flagged shipping is discussed. In addition, the origins of the German shipping industry sponsored training and recruitment programs on the Kiribati atolls is traced and examined.
