206. Relationship between Metabolic Syndrome and Number of Teeth in Japan

Abstract

The 2004 Japanese National Health and Nutrition Survey collected data on several measures, including self-reported dental health. In addition, this was the first nationwide survey to focus on metabolic syndrome (MetS) in Japan. Therefore, the authors used this nationwide data set to assess the relationship between number of teeth present and MetS. Anonymized data were available with permission from the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare of Japan. Data from 3,195 men and women aged 35 to 99 y were examined, and logistic regression analyses were used to evaluate the association between number of teeth and MetS. Moreover, the authors performed an analysis of covariance to compare the mean number of teeth between those with and those without MetS, after adjusting for confounders. In comparison with those having ?28 teeth, those with fewer remaining teeth demonstrated significantly higher odds of having MetS. Specifically, those having 1 to 9 teeth had higher odds of having MetS than those with more teeth and were more than twice as likely to be affected than those with ?28 teeth. Furthermore, individuals with MetS in the age groups of 45 to 54, 55 to 64, and 65 to 74 y had significantly fewer teeth than those without MetS in the same age groups. These results suggest that the number of teeth present is associated with the prevalence of MetS in the Japanese population. Abstract

Laminated hard disk heads with FeTaN films, which have high saturation magnetic flux density of 16KG, have been newly developed for high density magnetic recording. In this study, read/write characteristics for FeTaN heads were evaluated and compared with the value for Sendust laminated heads. The FeTaN heads have better overwrite characteristics by 10dB than Sendust heads. Even for 2400 Oe high coercivity media, the overwrite value is -32dB. Output voltage for the FeTaN head is at least 1.2times higher than that for a Sendust head. Popcorn noise and wiggle noise are low enough for practical use. FeTaN heads are shown to have a great potential to achieve high a real density recording.

Abstract

The Nankai Trough Seismogenic Zone Experiment (NanTroSEIZE) is a multidisciplinary investigation of fault mechanics and seismogenesis along subduction megathrusts and includes reflection and refraction seismic imaging, direct sampling by drilling, in situ measurements, and long-term monitoring in conjunction with laboratory and numerical modeling studies. The fundamental objectives of NanTroSEIZE are to characterize the nature of fault slip and strain accumulation, fault and wall rock composition, fault architecture, and state variables throughout an active plate boundary system. As part of the NanTroSEIZE program, operations during Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Expedition 348 were planned to extend and case riser Hole C0002F, begun during IODP Expedition 326 in 2010 and continued during Expedition 338 in 2012, from 860 to 3600 meters below the seafloor (mbsf). Riser operations during Expedition 348 were carried out and deepened the hole to 3058 mbsf, a new maximum depth record in scientific ocean drilling. Operations included installation and cementing of 13⅜ inch casing to 2008.9 mbsf and an 11¾ inch liner to 2922.5 mbsf, stabilizing the borehole for future deepening. Reaching this depth required two sidetracking operations from the original Hole C0002F, resulting in the designation of Holes C0002N and C0002P for the successively deeper sidetracks. During drilling, a suite of logging-while-drilling (LWD) and measurement-while-drilling (MWD), mud-gas, and cuttings data were collected over the interval from 2162.5 to 3058.5 mbsf in Hole C0002P, and a partial suite was collected in Hole C0002N. The interval from 2163 to 2218 mbsf was cored with the rotary core barrel (RCB). Planned future riser drilling operations will deepen the hole to penetrate the plate boundary fault at ~4600–5200 mbsf.

Abstract

The majority of marine invertebrates produce dispersive larvae which, in order to complete their life cycles, must attach and metamorphose into benthic forms. This process, collectively referred to as settlement, is often guided by habitat-specific cues. While the sources of such cues are well known, the links between their biological activity, chemical identity, presence and quantification in situ are largely missing. Previous work on coral larval settlement in vitro has shown widespread induction by crustose coralline algae (CCA) and in particular their associated bacteria. However, we found that bacterial biofilms on CCA did not initiate ecologically realistic settlement responses in larvae of 11 hard coral species from Australia, Guam, Singapore and Japan. We instead found that algal chemical cues induce identical behavioral responses of larvae as per live CCA. We identified two classes of CCA cell wall-associated compounds - glycoglycerolipids and polysaccharides - as the main constituents of settlement inducing fractions. These algae-derived fractions induce settlement and metamorphosis at equivalent concentrations as present in CCA, both in small scale laboratory assays and under flow-through conditions, suggesting their ability to act in an ecologically relevant fashion to steer larval settlement of corals. Both compound classes were readily detected in natural samples.
