Abstract

Systemic Amyloid A Amyloidosis in a Dog with Sub-acute Time Course after Anesthesia An 8-year-old female beagle used for investigation of diagnostic imaging rapidly became ill without premonitory symptoms the day after undergoing anesthesia and died about 2 months later. Systemic amyloidosis was found by necropsy, and severe amyloid deposition was observed in the pancreas, kidney and spleen. Immunohistochemically, almost all amyloid depositions comprised amyloid A. Other findings included thrombi in the pulmonary artery and aorta and plasma cell infiltration in multiple organs, including the kidneys. Amyloid A amyloidosis is the most common type of amyloidosis in animals and occurs in association with chronic inflammation and neoplasia. However, the sub-acute course in the present case is rare and suggests an association between anesthesia and thrombi without clear background lesions.

Abstract

An overpotential model for planar solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) is developed and applied to a stack numerical simulation. Charge-transfer distribution within the electrodes are approximated using an exponential function, based on which the Ohmic loss and activation overpotential are evaluated. The predicted current-voltage characteristics agree well with the experimental results, and also the overpotentials within the cell can reproduce the results obtained from a numerical analysis where the distribution of the charge-transfer current within the electrodes is fully solved. The proposed model is expected to be useful to maintain the accuracy of SOFC simulations when the cell components, consisting of anode, electrolyte and cathode, are simplified into one layer element.

Abstract

The effects of oxygen addition to the methane fuels directly supplied to solid oxide fuel cells were investigated. Fundamental experiments were conducted using Ni-YSZ cermet as a typical anode material. The Ni-YSZ catalysts having different streamwise lengths were fabricated on the YSZ flat plates. Premixed gas of methane, oxygen, nitrogen and stream was supplied to the test catalyst set in a rectangular test channel. The exhaust gas compositions and the surface temperature distributions of the test catalyst were measured. It was found that the oxidation of methane prominently proceeded near the upstream edge of the catalyst followed by steam/dry reforming reactions downstream. It resulted in a formation of the high temperature region leading a large temperature gradient in the streamwise direction.

Abstract

The Planet Formation Imager (PFI) project aims to provide a strong scientific vision for ground-based optical astronomy beyond the upcoming generation of Extremely Large Telescopes. We make the case that a breakthrough in angular resolution imaging capabilities is required in order to unravel the processes involved in planet formation. PFI will be optimised to provide a complete census of the protoplanet population at all stellocentric radii and over the age range from 0.1 to ∼100 Myr. Within this age period, planetary systems undergo dramatic changes and the final architecture of planetary systems is determined. Our goal is to study the planetary birth on the natural spatial scale where the material is assembled, which is the "Hill Sphere" of the forming planet, and to characterise the protoplanetary cores by measuring their masses and physical properties. Our science working group has investigated the observational characteristics of these young protoplanets as well as the migration mechanisms that might alter the system architecture. We simulated the imprints that the planets leave in the disk and study how PFI could revolutionise areas ranging from exoplanet to extragalactic science. Abstract

Nano-sized FeCo particles containing Sm and B are prepared by a co-precipitation method. Each particle has a spherical shape with a diameter of about 20 nm and a core-shell structure. The core and shell mainly consist of the FeCo alloy and oxides containing Sm and B, respectively. The thickness of surface layer is only about 1 nm. The lattice spacing of the core part is estimated to be 2.0 [Angstrom] which corresponds to that of (110) plane of bcc FeCo alloy. The saturation magnetization and the coercivity are 164 emu/g and 1420 Oe, respectively. The coercivity is larger than the calculated value (?? 500 Oe) for spherical single domain Fe particles. 229. Urban area extraction using airborne X-band fully polarimetric Pi-SAR2 imagery

Abstract

In this paper, we present a method to extract urban areas from X-band fully polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data. It is known that very high resolution (VHR) SAR can extract buildings, but it requires more processes to map urban areas that should include other objects. The proposed method is mainly composed of two classifications. One classification uses total power of scattering and volume scattering derived by using four component decomposition method with correction of the polarization orientation angle (POA) effect. The other classification uses polarimetric coherency between SHH and SVV. The two results are intersected and final urban areas are extracted after post-classification processing. We applied the proposed method to airborne X-band fully polarimetric SAR data of Polarimetric and Interferometric Airborne Synthetic Aperture Radar System (Pi-SAR2), developed by the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT), Japan. The validation show that the results of the proposed method were acceptable, with an overall accuracy of approximately 80 to 90% at 100-m spatial scale.

Abstract

We carried out a trans-ancestry genome-wide association and replication study of blood pressure phenotypes among up to 320,251 individuals of East Asian, European and South Asian ancestry. We find genetic variants at 12 new loci to be associated with blood pressure (P = 3.9 × 10 -11 to 5.0 × 10 -21). The sentinel blood pressure SNPs are enriched for association with DNA methylation at multiple nearby CpG sites, suggesting that, at some of the loci identified, DNA methylation may lie on the regulatory pathway linking sequence variation to blood pressure. The sentinel SNPs at the 12 new loci point to genes involved in vascular smooth muscle (IGFBP3, KCNK3, PDE3A and PRDM6) and renal (ARHGAP24, OSR1, SLC22A7 and TBX2) function. The new and known genetic variants predict increased left ventricular mass, circulating levels of NT-proBNP, and cardiovascular and all-cause mortality (P = 0.04 to 8.6 × 10 -6). Our results provide new evidence for the role of DNA methylation in blood pressure regulation.

type:text, To characterize the temporal evolution of ultrashort X-ray pulses emitted by laser plasmas using a pump-probe method, a magnetic bottle time-of-flight electron spectrometer is constructed. The design is determined by numerical calculations of a mirror magnetic field and of the electron trajectory in a flight tube. The performance of the spectrometer is characterized by measuring the electron spectra of xenon atoms irradiated with a laser-driven plasma X-ray pulse. In addition, two-color above-threshold ionization (ATI) experiment is conducted for measurement of the X-ray laser pulse duration, in which xenon atoms are simultaneously irradiated with an X-ray laser pump and an IR laser probe. The correlation in the intensity of the sideband spectra of the 4d inner-shell photoelectrons and in the time delay of the two laser pulses yields an X-ray pulse width of 5.7 ps, in good agreement with the value obtained using an X-ray streak camera., This work was supported by a Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research B (No. 26286078) from the Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science. 238. Design-Led Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Manufacturing: Using 3D Imaging and Modeling to Optimize Electrode Performance

Abstract

Solid oxide fuel cells are among the most thermodynamically efficient energy conversion devices. They are critical for the future if we are to meet rising energy demands and increasing selectivity over our future energy mix. Traditionally, solid oxide fuel cell performance has been assessed using bulk parameters, and the microstructure-bulk properties relationship is yet to be well understood. Here, we use time-lapse 3D imaging to probe 3D electrode structure and move towards intelligently designing structures with specific performance attributes. Using 3D imaging allows for characterisation and quantification of parameters that are not well described in 2D, such as triple-phase boundary lengths, tortuosity and phase percolation. In this work, the parameters for an optimised porous nickel-scandia stabilized zirconia anode (Ni-ScSZ) were calculated using an electrochemical model to maximise triple-phase boundary length and density, gas permeation and electronic and ionic transport. Ni-ScSZ scaffolds were then produced using screen-printing and impregnation and characterized with FIB-SEM to obtain 3D microstructural parameters such as actual percolation of the phases, tortuosity and connectivity of the phases, and the length and density of triple-phase boundaries (Figure 1). The experimental microstructural parameters were then compared to the modelled optimised microstructure, allowing for an examination of the accuracy of the manufacturing parameters. Symmetrical cells were set up to compare the anode performance with the performance predicted by the electrochemical model. Early iterations of impregnated scaffolds show triple-phase boundary densities increased by approximately an order of magnitude and allowed for a critical assessment of the electrochemical model. The degraded electrode morphology was also characterized in 3D to link its changes during cycling to performance degradation. This approach enables us to move towards designing optimised electrodes with specific performance attributes. Figure 1

239. Beyond Pretty Pictures to Useful Quantities: The Next Step in 3D Quantification of SOFC Electrodes

Abstract

Global demands for energy storage, supply and portability has seen continual increase. Meeting these demands in a clean efficient manner will be expedited through an ability to directly image energy devices such as SOFC electrodes, in 3D, at high resolutions. Tomographic techniques allow for the 3D imaging and characterisation of complex electrode microstructures down towards tens of nanometers; which are inadequately described in 2D. The performance of the electrode is dependent on nano/micro-structure as the electrochemical reactions and transport phenomena are strongly affected by the complex porous structure. Furthermore, during processing or operation microstructural evolution may degrade electrochemical performance. However, although many studies have utilised 3D imaging, there is a need to understand the information beyond common metrics .e.g. porosity and tortuosity and pretty pictures. Increasingly large quantities of 3D or time-resolved 3D electrode data are simultaneously acquired and yet poorly understood, simply in favour of more 3D data acquisition. Here we use tomographic techniques (X-ray & FIBSEM) to probe the 3D SOFC electrode structure at nanometer to micrometer length scales. Advanced characterisation of particle specific attributes e.g. necks, interfaces and particle clustering within SOFC electrodes is derived; the electrode is not treated as three monolithic phases. The electrode is quantified as the interaction of particles of three phases. Micro/nano structural changes are followed to facilitate understanding the differences which occur with shape, structures and morphology at high resolution. Results reveal clustering behaviour of particles. The results are also correlated with measured experimental values to provide insight into microstructure-property relationships. We correlate models and this advanced 3D quantitative analysis. In doing so, altogether this work provides important insights for electrode design, enabling 3D optimised structures to be created and understanding sources of performance degradation. Figure 1

Abstract

A laser-plasma soft X-ray microscope which is a combination of a highly intense laser-plasma soft X-ray source and a contact microscopy has been developed. We have proposed a correlative imaging method with the laser-plasma soft X-ray microscope and a fluorescence microscope to observe the same biological cells with the both microscopes at the same time. Live hydrated biological cells and cellular organelles have been observed with the correlative imaging method. Using the information of the cellular organelles obtained with the fluorescence microscope, inner structures obtained with the soft X-ray microscope are identified. Since the spatial resolution of the soft X-ray microscope is much higher than that of the fluorescence microscope, fine structures of the cellular organelles of the live biological cells have been visualized with the correlative imaging.
