We present our analysis of the EXOSAT medium energy (ME) archival data on dwarf novae. Many dwarf novae were observed with EXOSAT; unfortunately, a significant fraction resulted in nondetection or marginal detection with the ME instrument. Our analysis of the brightest dwarf nova, SS Cyg, shows little correlation between the count rate and the hardness ratio, contrary to an earlier report. This is likely to be the result of a slight error in background subtraction performed. The apparent lack of correlation favors a compact boundary layer between the accretion disk and the white dwarf as the hard X-ray emitting region, rather than an extended corona

CCD photometry of KO Vel obtained on five nights in April 1987 is reported. From this and the two previously published sets of CCD photometry, a new candidate orbital period of 0.422 d (10.12 h) is derived. The shape of the folded light curve is nonsinusoidal, which has made the Fourier transform method less effective than usual. It is shown that all three sets of light curves examined here are consistent with the proposed period. All three data sets for the presence of a shorter period are examined, and no conclusive evidence for a periodic variation on an approximately 1 hr time scale is found. The nature of KO Vel therefore still remains an open question.

Summary The fields of several variable stars believed to be cataclysmic binaries at large distances above the Galactic plane have been examined using low resolution spectroscopy in the 3600-10000 Å wavelength range. The spectral characteristics of the stars observed are presented. We find that AL Com may be an intermediate polar on the basis of its modulation period, and the observation of hydrogen lines in its spectrum. In four systems, ARCnc, DVUMa, DODra and BCUMa, there is evidence for the spectral signature of the mass-donating secondary, and we use the spectral type of the secondary to estimate the system parameters. At least two of these binaries, ARCnc and DVUMa, are eclipsing. The inferred absolute magnitude of BC UMa is faint, in the range 11.0-13.5. The blue spectrum of this star is remarkably similar to that of the unusual cataclysmic variable WZ Sge. We note that BC UMa and WZ Sge also exhibit similar, and extreme, outburst amplitudes, and have very similar orbital periods.

A case of yolk sac tumor of the anterior mediastinum was studied by light and electron microscopy and found to have characteristic patterns which were similar to a neoplasm of gonadal origin. These findings, in addition to the immunohistochemical identification of alpha-fetoprotein in the tumor, indicated that the neoplasm was germ cell in origin. A brief review of previously reported cases is included. Prognosis of the patients with yolk sac tumor of the anterior mediastinum was generally dismal; however, those patients with tumors incidentally found but completely excised survived without evidence of reucrrence.

The AM Her type object E2003+225 was observed with EXOSAT, IUE and ground-based telescopes on 1983 Oct. 12. The brightness of the ultrasoft X-ray component allowed the Objective Grating Spectrometer (OGS) to be used, which gave a model-independent determination of the temperature of the blackbody spectrum. The star was observed again on 1984 July 24 by IUE with simultaneous optical spectrophotometry. The high resolution of this observation revealed complex line profiles, and a systematic velocity much smaller than previously reported. The composite energy distribution is presented.

The local corrosion of alumina-graphite refractories at the slag-metal interface was studied by immersion tests and by direct observation using a high temperature X-ray radiographic technique. Combining these investigations with microscopic studies, a mechanism for the local corrosion was developed. The mechanism is based on the cyclic dissolution of alumina and graphite into the slag and metal phase, respectively. During the dissolution of the alumina, the motion of the slag film induced by the Marangoni effect and the evolution of gas bubbles can accelerate the dissolution process.

A highly variable point X-ray source, first seen by the Einstein IPC, has been positioned with the EXOSAT CMA and identified with a bright (V=8.5) KO star. Although in the direction of the southern half of the Cygnus Loop, this star is almost certainly a foreground object and typical of other active cool stars that are related to RS CVn systems.

3A0729+103 (= BG CMi) is an intermediate polar discovered through its X-ray emission (McHardy et al. 1981, 1984). The orbital period is 3.235 hours and the rotation period is 15.2 minutes, For ephemeris and references on the source we refer to McHardy et al. (1984). We report here on optical (4025 to 5090 A) and ultraviolet (1200 to 3200 A) spectroscopy obtained, respectively, on Dec 1, 1984 and April 21, 1985. Our data show clear modulation of spectral features with the orbital period.

To investigate the effect of arginine-enriched solution on tumor growth and metastasis, rats were infused with solutions containing 5.5 and 0.66% arginine for 8 days. Infusions were started at the same time of subcutaneous transplant of Yoshida sarcoma. Arginine-rich solution suppressed tumor growth at an early stage and prevented metastases. to the liver and kidney. In addition, arginine supplements enhanced the phagocytic activity of alveolar macrophages. It also resulted in maintenance of a positive nitrogen balance and prevented the increases in the levels of several amino acids observed in the control group. The suppressive effect of arginine-enriched solution on tumor growth may be due to its activation of the immunologic system, in which the phagocytic activity of macrophages probably participates. A planar multilevel interconnection technology, called planar metallization with polymer (PMP), has been developed, which utilizes a polyimide known as PIQ (polyimide isoindroquinazoline-dione) as an interlevel dielectric. The PIQ is highly resistant to heat and is mechanically flexible. Its low impurity concentrations also make it very stable in semiconductors. The PMP processing techniques have been refined to the stage where ICs can be fabricated commercially. A PIQ film etchant forms fine via-holes up to 3/spl times/3 /spl mu/m/SUP 2/, and chip size can be reduced by placing bonding pads on the active region of the device. Highly reliable linear and 256-bit bipolar memory ICs have been realized through this technology.

X-ray, UV and optical data are presented of the longest period AM Her object, E2003+225, from October 12, 1983, together with a new linear polarization ephemeris. The optical and X-ray data were obtained simultaneously and the UV observations were carried out on the same day. A 6-hr observation with the Exosat 500 line/mm objective grating restricts soft X-ray blackbody temperatures to the range 18-29 eV. The blackbody luminosity exceeds the hard X-ray luminosity by at least a factor of 4.5, but is of the same order as the optical/UV component. Soft (0.1-0.25 keV) and hard X-ray (1-6 keV) light curves covering almost two orbital periods are presented and discussed.

Complex indeterminates and their notation are introduced into Prolog. The syntax and semantics of the new language are described. The language builds in an extension to the usual unification. Detailed examples are given to demonstrate discourse models based on situation semantics in the proposed language. Discourse, connective and resource situations are included in the examples.

A study of the effects of aluminum reduction cells, holding furnaces, and three-layer refining cells produced some interesting results.

Case 1. 8 months old female. Acute dyspnea. Succumbed within a few hours after admission. Autopsy revealed mucus accumulated in the bronchi and acute inflammatory changes of bronchi-walls.Case 2. 33 years old female. Mucus was successfully removed with SAFAR Ventilation Bronchoscope under general anesthesia.The symptome was improved.

A 57-year-old male was introduced to our hospital for his drug resistant non-ischemic ventricular tachycardia causing faintness attack. Preoperative electrophysiological studies led to a diagnosis of ventricular tachycardia originating from the right ventricular outflow tract. After ventriculotomy, an abnormal muscle band was noticed in the right ventricular outflow tract, which seemed to be a focus of tachycardia by endocardial mapping. Myocardial excision with the abnormal muscle band was performed. In addition to, cryoablation was performed surrounding this area. After the operation, the ventricular tachycardia disappeared completely. No antiarrhythmic drug have been required at 18 months postoperative months.

A new human cell line was established from a prolactin (PRL) secreting pituitary adenoma. This cell line, designated as HPA, initially produced and secreted PRL, but the ability was decreased with increasing passage number. After about 30 passages in vitro, these cells had a short doubling time (14 h) and a low plating efficiency (9%). When a minimum of 10(5) cells was injected per mouse, virtually all athymic nude mice developed a slow growing, nonmetastasizing tumor at the injection site about 30 days after injection. PRL production by the HPA cells after Day 150 was demonstrated by immunocytochemistry as well as radioimmunoassay. In addition, cimetidine (10(-4) M) had a significant stimulatory effect on PRL secretion by 4-day-cultured HPA cells. When the HPA cells were incubated in the presence of 5.0 and 10.0 nM bromocriptine, the proliferation rate was inhibited to 53.4 and 25.1% of untreated controls, respectively. On the other hand, the same concentrations of bromocriptine did not affect the proliferation rate of YK cells derived from human immature teratoma of the ovary. In addition, bromocriptine inhibited significantly the growth rate of xenotransplanted HPA but not YK cells. These results suggest that bromocriptine inhibits specifically the proliferation of HPA cells.

A 45-year-old female had sudden onset of severe headache, nausea and vomiting without any inducing moments and was transferred to our hospital by an ambulance car. On admission the patient was alert and showed only signs of meningeal irritation. There were no other neurological deficits at all. Immediate CT examination revealed a small high density spot in the area of the right basal ganglia, and a large high density in the frontal horns of both lateral ventricles. Right carotid angiogram showed completely patent carotid siphon with Moyamoya vessels. A small round aneurysmal shadow of 3 mm in diameter was seen in the area of these Moyamoya vessels of the right basal ganglia, and it was thought to be corresponding to the high density spot in the CT examination. Left carotid angiogram showed stenosis of C portion with typical Moyamoya vessels. Therefore, diagnosis of atypical Moyamoya disease with a ruptured aneurysm and ventricular penetration of hematoma was made. The patient was placed on conservative treatment. On 25th day from onset, repeated angiogram showed enlargement of the aneurysmal shadow from 3 mm to 5 mm in diameter. So, on 33rd day, right STA-MCA anastomosis and encephalomyosynangiosis were carried out. Angiogram on 12th day after surgery revealed no aneurysmal shadow. The patient was discharged without any neurological deficit at all. Previous paper, which reported cases of Moyamoya disease with aneurysm, were reviewed. According to the location of the aneurysm, these cases were classified into 3 types angiographically; type I: aneurysm in the area of Moyamoya vessels, type II: aneurysm of cerebral-peripheral artery, and type III: aneurysm of the circle of Willis. It has been generally believed that the Moyamoya disease may be associated with either a true or a pseudoaneurysm in the case of type I. However, pseudoaneurysm in the area of Moyamoya vessels has not been found in postmortem examination but true aneurysms so far. Therefore it may not be denied that the aneurysm of this case was true aneurysm although it showed an enlarging tendency and disappeared rather spontaneously.

Twenty two cases with Hodgkin's disease under 20 years of age who were diagnosed and treated in National Cancer Center during 1962-1986 were studied retrospectively. The most common initial symptom was swelling of lymph nodes (86%) and only 5 cases (23%) showed "B" symptoms. Laboratory findings showed that there were some cases with increased WBC counts but only 2 cases with an elevated LDH value. In 2 out of 4 cases serum copper value correlated well with their clinical state. Histologically lymphocyte predominance type, mixed cellularity type and nodular sclerosis type almost equally occurred in children younger than age 15 years. On the other hand nodular sclerosis type with mediastinal mass was predominantly encountered in older patients (especially female). The ten years' survival rate in stage I and II patients was 59% compared with 21% in stage III and IV patients. As for the results of initial treatment, complete remission and 10 years' survival rate were 91% and 87% in recent 12 years (1975-1986) compared with 55% and 36% in the preceding 13 years (1962-1974) respectively. Autopsy findings revealed rare involvements of the central nervous system and kidneys. Various late effects which may be caused by escalating doses of radiotherapy occurred in 6 out of 9 cases under the age of 15 years who survived. On the basis of these results lower-doses of radiotherapy combined with systemic chemotherapy appeared to be advisable for the treatment of childhood Hodgkin's disease.

A subscriber line interface circuit (SLIC) two-chip set is presented. It eliminates off-chip function trimming and contains integrated coin telephone set facilities and BORSCHT functions. The set consists of: (a) the subscriber interface LSI, a 320-V dielectrically isolated bipolar LSI with on-chip thin-film resistors and double-layer metal; and (b) the subscriber processor LSI, a 1.6 mm CMOS LSI with oversampling A-D/D-A converters and a microprogrammable digital signal processor. The chip sizes are 5.5 mmt6.06 mm and 6.0 mmt5.7 mm, respectively. With the two-chip set, a SLIC for coin telephone set interface can be established without high-precision filter components or hybrid ICs with their function trimming

Immunocytochemical methods have been used extensively in morphologic studies of pancreatic islets and have contributed a great deal to understanding morphofunctional relationships in various pathologic conditions. Many hitherto unknown changes in the cellular composition of islet tissue have been discovered using these methods. Appropriate and inappropriate secretory products have been identified in the pancreatic endocrine tumors. It is expected that immunocytochemical methods, together with electron microscopy, will provide additional important information about the pathophysiology of the pancreatic islets.

Nineteen adult patients with cancer received six to 10 monthly treatments of doxorubicin and cisplatin. Recumbent pulse was measured for 24 to 30 hours before each treatment. Treatment was stopped for disease progression or when a total doxorubicin dose of 550 mg/m2 was reached. Rising serial 24-hour pulse averages predicted congestive heart failure reliably. No patient had congestive heart failure during therapy, but three patients had congestive heart failure two to four months after receiving 540, 525, and 530 mg/m2 of doxorubicin. In these, two to six months before completion of therapy, the 24-hour rhythm-qualified mean (mesor) of pulse showed a positive slope by linear regression analysis (p less than 0.05) that was apparent at cumulative doxorubicin doses of 300, 420, and 240 mg/m2. All 19 patients received similar total doses of doxorubicin and were followed to death or 12 months after the last doxorubicin dose. In addition, a progressive rise in the 24-hour mean pulse coincided with histologically documented doxorubicin-induced lethal congestive heart failure in Wistar-Kyoto rats of both sexes.

SM-108 (4-carbamoylimidazolium-5-olate) is a new purine antagonist which blocks IMP dehydrogenase, the key enzyme of de novo GMP biosynthesis. Eleven patients were entered into a clinical study of SM-108 for the treatment of myeloproliferative disorders. These included 10 cases of chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) and one case of essential thrombocythemia (ET). Two cases of CML had received prior chemotherapy. SM-108 was given orally at a dose of 400-600mg/m2 daily. Of nine evaluable cases, four cases of CML achieved complete responses and two cases of CML achieved partial responses (response rate = 66.7%). The duration of drug action was short, and the daily dosage required adjustment at frequent intervals. Long-term response without therapy has not been seen with SM-108 in CML. There was no response in the case of ET. The side effects included constipation (1/11), diarrhea (1/11) and mild hepatic toxicity (1/11). No cardiac or renal toxicity was observed.

Seven patients with coexistent Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) syndrome and variant angina pectoris underwent surgical interruption of an accessory atrioventricular conduction pathway. In two of these patients, perioperative coronary artery spasm occurred. One patient had a perioperative myocardial infarction and the other patient treated successfully had no infarction. Nitroglycerin and nifedipine were administered during and following operation in the other 5 patients without perioperative coronary artery spasm. No adverse effect was observed in the intraoperative electrophysiological study. Combined therapy of intravenous nitroglycerin administration and sublingual nifedipine administration are useful in the perioperative management of patients with coexistent WPW syndrome and variant angina pectoris.
