Blast and fragmentation of a scaled down model of standard artillery shell is investigated experimentally and numerically. Simple experimental techniques are employed in this study to measure the fragments’ velocity, mass and spatial distribution. Fragments of mass ranging from tens of milligram(s) to 6.4 grams are produced with velocities ranging from 960 to 1555 m/s. The cylindrical part of the shell has larger contribution among high velocity fragments ~1369-1555m/s than the conical and rear parts due to higher charge to mass (C/M) ratio. Overpressure of 44.2psi (304.7kPa) is measured at stand-off distance of 0.550m. The numerical simulation of fragmentation is carried out using Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) solver available in ANSYS AUTODYN. A coupled Euler-ALE (Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian) approach is used to simulate the shell blast propagation in the surrounding air. A good agreement is achieved between the simulation and experimental results. The investigation can help in the development of protective configurations against the damaging effects of blast and fragmentation.

Education around the world has been negatively affected by the new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. Many institutions had to transition to distance learning in compliance with the enforced safety measures. Distance learning might work well for settings with stable internet connections, professional technical teams, and basic implementation of technology in education. In contrast, distance learning faces serious challenges in less fortunate settings with inferior infrastructure. This report aims to shed light on the immediate action steps taken at a leading pharmacy school in Iraq to accommodate for the enforced changes in pharmacy education. The University of Baghdad College of Pharmacy went from less than minimal technology implementation to full distance learning in a remarkable time frame. Pharmacy students were able to finish academic year requirements and move on with the program. Final year students will graduate on time as competent pharmacists.

Abstract Background Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological conditions. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children with epilepsy proves to be very common. Both epilepsy and ADHD impair quality of life. We aimed to evaluate cognitive function, socioeconomic level, and quality of life (QOL) among children with ADHD and epilepsy. A total of 100 children were divided into 5 groups (20 children/group) as (I) epilepsy, (II) ADHD with epilepsy, (III) ADHD with EEG changes, (IV) ADHD without EEG changes, and (V) control. Children aged between 6 and 11 years were recruited for this study. Early Childhood Epilepsy Severity Scale (E-Chess), Conners’ Parent Rating Scale (CPRS), Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-3rd edition (WISC-III), socioeconomic scale for assessment of social burden and socioeconomic classes, and PedsQL (quality of life measure) assessed. Results Children with ADHD and epilepsy had the lowest PedsQL total scores and lower scores than other groups especially in performance IQ score. The highest percentage of low socioeconomic class (25%) was observed in the group of ADHD with epilepsy and the group of epilepsy. Conclusion ADHD with epilepsy is associated with low performance IQ, poor socioeconomic level, and quality of life. Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory scores show significant correlation with total IQ score in the group of ADHD with epilepsy.

This article aims to propose and study a new system design for renewable energy called photovoltaic/ solar pond. This new system involves cooling the arrays of the photovoltaic/thermal collectors, which are installed beside the salinity gradient solar pond with a heat exchanger that is installed behind each solar cell. Thermal energy gained by the photovoltaic/thermal collectors was stored in the heat storage zone using a heat exchanger system. An experimental assessment was performed to examine the thermal performance of the mini PV/solar pond. The experiments were carried out for five months, starting from September 2019 and ending in January 2020, in Kirkuk, Iraq. During this period, temperature, salinity, and power generation were recorded in real-time. The experimental results confirmed that the maximum total efficiency value of the system was 37.67% which was recorded in September. Besides, the highest value of the daily thermal efficiency was 30% for September, while the ultimate value of the daily electrical efficiency was 9.357% as recorded in December. The current result agrees well with other experimental studies in the same field.

Abstract Objectives Frontal sinus surgery is considered one of the more challenging aspects of Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery, due to the complex variations in normal sinus anatomy but also increased morbidity due to the close proximity of critical structures such as the anterior cranial fossa and orbits. We aim to investigate the medial canthal point (MCP) as an anatomical landmark for safe frontal sinus access. Methods The MCP intranasally is identified during surgery with non‐tooth forceps, with one limb just anterior to the medial canthus and the other intranasally in the same coronal plane along the skull base. This point was identified on 100 paranasal sinus computed tomography (CT) scan reconstructions. The distance between the anterior cranial fossa and MCP was measured on imaging—medial canthal point distance (MCPD). The maximal anterior‐posterior (AP) distance was measured on all scans. Results The average MCPD for males was 13.0 mm (8.7‐20.4 mm) and for females 12.0 mm (6.8‐22.8 mm). Mean AP distance for males was 12.0 mm (4.5‐20.2 mm) and for females 10.4 mm (3.8‐15.9 mm). Mean distance for all 100 patients was 12.6 mm (range 7.5‐22.8 mm). In all cases, the MCP was anterior to the cranial fossa. Mixed effects modelling analysis showed a significant correlation between the MCPD and AP distance (P = .006). Conclusion The MCP is a consistent anatomical landmark that can serve as an adjunct to safe frontal sinus access alongside the first olfactory fiber and CT navigation systems. However, patient selection continues to be very important, with larger well pneumatized frontal sinuses being ideal to tackle earlier in a surgeon's career. Level of evidence NA

The outbreak of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is thought to have occurred first in Wuhan, China in December 2019, before spreading to over 120 countries in the months that followed. It was declared a “public health emergency of international concern” by the World Health Organization on January 31, 2020 and recognized as a pandemic on March 11, 2020. The primary route of SARS-CoV-2 transmission from human to human is through inhalation of respiratory droplets. Devising protective technologies for stopping the spread of the droplets of aerosol containing the viral particles is a vital requirement to curb the ongoing outbreak. However, the current generations of protective respirator masks in use are noted for their imperfect design and there is a need to develop their more advanced analogues, with higher blockage efficiency and the ability to deactivate the trapped bacteria and viruses. It is likely that one such design will be inspired by nanotechnologies. Here we describe a new design from Egypt, utilizing a reusable, recyclable, customizable, antimicrobial and antiviral respirator facial mask feasible for mass production. The novel design is based on the filtration system composed of a nanofibrous matrix of polylactic acid and cellulose acetate containing copper oxide nanoparticles and graphene oxide nanosheets and produced using the electrospinning technique. Simultaneously, the flat pattern fabricated from a thermoplastic composite material is used to provide a solid fit with the facial anatomy. This design illustrates an effort made in a developing setting to provide innovative solutions for combating the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic of potentially global significance.

Hybrid solar collector (PV/T) is designed to produce electricity, hot water, or hot air at the same time as they operate solar cells and solar heaters in one system. This system is designed to increase the electrical efficiency of solar cells by absorbing heat from these cells. The fuzzy logic (FL) is a tool usually used to optimize the operation of the systems. In this paper, the FL is to monitor and correct the mainsystem parameters to remain optimization efficiency at a better level. Three affected variables were studied: Effect of reflective mirrors, the effect of the glass cover, and the effect of the lower reflector angle on the performance of the PV / T hybrid solar system. These three parameters are traveled to be inputs for the FL, and the PV temperature in addition to system efficiency is the output for it. The effect of solar radiation was found to have a great effect on the efficiency of the hybrid solar collector. The thermal efficiency was 82% for the given value of the PV and mirrors, while the efficiency down to 50 for another angle. By using the artificial intelligent the system behavior depends on its output, which called feedback close loop control, at a real-time process that optimizes the system efficiency and its output.

This paper examines the effects of economic growth, financial development, and trade openness on the environment quality measured by CO2 emissions over the period of 1965–2014 in the case of Egypt. In this study, the series were stationary at their first difference form, and thus, a long-run model was adopted using the vector error correction model technique. The results confirm that the variables are cointegrated, indicating the long-run relationship between the variables. The empirical findings reveal a negative influence of economic growth and financial effect of the previous period of CO2 emissions, these effects are not significant in the short run. Any deviations from the long-run equilibrium return quickly, representing 59% speed of adjustment. The study proposes new policy insights into reduce CO2 emissions, especially in the long run

A numerical study is achieved on a new shape of temperature saver solar collector using an artificial neural network. The storage collector is a triangle face and a right triangle pyramid for the volumetric shape. It is obtained by cutting a cube from one upper corner at 45°, down to the opposite hypotenuse of the base of the cube. The numerical study was carried out using the computational fluid dynamics code (ANSYS-Fluent) software with natural convection phenomenon in the pyramid enclosure. Elman backpropagation network is used for his ability to find the nearest solution with the smallest error rate. The network consists of three layers, each of different corresponding weights. The results show that the temperature and velocity distributions throughout the operating period were obtained. The influence of introducing an internal partition inside the triangular storage collector was investigated. Also the optimum geometry and location for this partition were obtained. The enhancement was best at y = 0.25 m, whereas the height of triangular collector was 0.5 m. The hourly system performance was evaluated for all test conditions. The performance of the NN to train a model for this work was 0.000207, while the error of the calculation was 1×10-2 as average.

Field study works have been carried out to investigate the diffusion rate of oily wastewater on clayey soils and measuring the degree of contamination with chemical components for both horizontal and vertical directions. Three pits have been prepared for this work with 30 cm in diameter and 50 cm in depth, which are lying on a straight line and 100 cm clear distance between them. Three, 30 cm diameter plastic pipes were fixed inside the pits having the length of 50 cm, 150 cm, and 200 cm, respectively, to study the effect of the height of the spilled oily wastewater on the rate of diffusion. The pipes filled with oily wastewater separately, the diffusion rate with time has been recorded. The results showed that the vertical diffusion rate of the oily wastewater was increased with the increase of the height, while the longitudinal diffusion rate recorded lower values. The same observation has been noted for the degree of soil contamination.

Abstract Background Oshikhandass is a rural village in northern Pakistan where a 1989–1991 verbal autopsy study showed that diarrhea and pneumonia were the top causes of under-5 mortality. Intensive surveillance, active community health education and child health interventions were delivered in 1989–1996; here we assess improvements in under-5 mortality, diarrhea, and pneumonia over this period and 15 years later. Methods Two prospective open-cohort studies in Oshikhandass from 1989 to 1996 (Study 1) and 2011–2014 (Study 2) enrolled all children under age 60 months. Study staff trained using WHO guidelines, conducted weekly household surveillance and promoted knowledge on causes and management of diarrhea and pneumonia. Information about household characteristics and socioeconomic status was collected. Hurdle models were constructed to examine putative risk factors for diarrhea and pneumonia. Results Against a backdrop of considerable change in the socioeconomic status of the community, under-5 mortality, which declined over the course of Study 1 (from 114.3 to 79.5 deaths/1000 live births (LB) between 1989 and 1996), exceeded Sustainable Development Goal 3 by Study 2 (19.8 deaths/ 1000 LB). Reductions in diarrhea prevalence (20.3 to 2.2 days/ Child Year [CY]), incidence (2.1 to 0.5 episodes/ CY), and number of bloody diarrhea episodes (18.6 to 5.2%) seen during Study 1, were sustained in Study 2. Pneumonia incidence was 0.5 episodes /CY in Study 1 and 0.2/CY in Study 2; only 5% of episodes were categorized as severe or very severe in both studies. While no individual factors predicted a statistically significant difference in diarrhea or pneumonia episodes, the combined effect of water, toilet and housing materials was associated with a significant decrease in diarrhea; higher household income was the most protective factor for pneumonia in Study 1. Conclusions We report a 4-fold decrease in overall childhood mortality, and a 2-fold decrease in childhood morbidity from diarrhea and pneumonia in a remote rural village in Pakistan between 1989 and 2014. We conclude that significant, sustainable improvements in child health may be achieved through improved socioeconomic status and promoting interactions between locally engaged health workers and the community, but that continued efforts are needed to improve health worker training, supervision, and the rational use of medications. Abstract Background Excimer laser trabeculostomy (ELT) is a microinvasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) that creates multiple laser channels through the trabecular meshwork using a cold laser system, which minimizes tissue fibrosis and aids in bypassing the main area of resistance to aqueous outflow. The purpose of this review is to evaluate the current body of evidence surrounding ELT in terms of efficacy and review the safety profile of the procedure. Main text Studies screened had to show clear inclusion and exclusion criteria as well as well-defined outcome measures. PubMed, MEDLINE, EMBASE and the Cochrane Controlled Trial Database were searched. Preferred Reporting Items of Systematic Reviews (PRISMA) guidelines were used to assess for study quality and for any bias. Sixty-four articles were initially identified with 18 meeting preliminary screening criteria. Ultimately, 8 studies met inclusion criteria and 2 additional non-referenced publications were also included: 1 randomized control trial, 4 prospective case series and 5 retrospective studies. Overall studies showed moderate intraocular pressure (IOP) lowering of between 20% and 40% from baseline without medication washout and mostly a decrease in glaucoma medications with few complications. Conclusion Current literature shows a significant IOP-lowering effect of ELT with a favorable safety-profile in standalone cases or combined with cataract surgery. Limitations to these studies are the lack of controls and washout IOP. Overall, ELT is an attractive MIGS option that does not require any residual device remaining in the angle.

Samples of Rotifera genus Brachionus were collected from Al-Barka and Al-Nagara region in Al- Hammar Marsh, South of Iraq. Remarks on the taxonomy were notes on 6 species of the genus and a monthly density of each species were recorded during the study period from Feb-2006 to Jan-2007.The highest value of total density was 2.78 ind /l recorded in May -2006, whereas the lowest value was 0.01 ind /l and reported in March-2006.

The study is based on Samples of Rotifera collected from three ponds located inside the University campus, Garmat Ali region Basrah, Iraq. The samples were investigated for the density changes and for the diversity. There were found 26 species of Rotifera belong to 20 genera. The maximum recorded density was (51 ind. / l) which observed in May/2006 at pond 1, whereas the minimum density was (0.6 ind / l) recorded at pond 1 in November/2006. The total density was (225 ind. / l) at pond 1. It was found that the diversity of Rotifera (no. of spp.) is greater at pond 2 and pond 3 compared with pond 1. There were 22 species at pond 2 and pond 3 but only 9 species at pond 1.

(1) Background and Aim: The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is linked to increasing cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) around the world. COVID-19 infections have an important impact on pregnancy, preterm birth (PTB) and delivery. Although several complications have been reported in infected pregnant women, the effect of infection on PTB is controversial. The purpose of this study was to summarize the existing literature on the effects and complications of COVID-19 on the health of pregnant women and preterm babies and its impact on the incidence of PTB. We also discuss the effect of current COVID-19 vaccines during pregnancy. (2) Methods: We carried out a systematic search of MEDLINE, Embase, and PubMed for studies on preterm births associated with COVID-19. (3) Results and Conclusions: We discovered contradictory results regarding the prevalence of PTB during the pandemic compared to earlier years. While most studies indicated an increase in PTBs with COVID-19, some indicated a decline in the preterm delivery rate during this time. During pregnancy, COVID-19 infection can increase the incidence of cesarean section, stillbirth, ICU admission, preeclampsia/eclampsia, and mortality rates. In the treatment of pregnant women with severe COVID-19, methylprednisolone was favored over prednisolone, and a brief course of dexamethasone is advised for pregnant women with anticipated PTB to accelerate the development of the fetal lung. Generally, vaccination for COVID-19 in pregnant and lactating women stimulates anti-SARS-CoV2 immune responses, and it does not result in any noteworthy negative reactions or outcomes for the mother or baby.

We report here about a 12-year-old female patient who had two life-threatening accidents that led to post-traumatic stress disorder associated with catatonia. She had closed eyes, had urinary and fecal incontinence, and had been in an abnormal position for one and half month. Moreover, she had complications such as dehydration, malunion of the fractured arm, and deformities in hand and foot. After detailed psychiatric examination, neurological assessment, and laboratory investigation, the patient received successful treatment in the form of benzodiazepine injections, intravenous fluid, oral antidepressants, and six sessions of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). We discuss the pathophysiology of catatonia, which remains elusive, and recommend evaluating catatonic children for any possible trauma during psychiatry assessment.

The use of nanotechnology in the construction industry and building structures is one of the important topics of construction engineering today. This study aims to discover the effect of Nano-silica (SiO2) on concrete's mechanical and thermal properties, such as thermal conductivity, specific heat capacity, thermal diffusivity, and compressive strength. It is studied and discussed in this article. Nano-silica was added at percentages (1%, 2%, and 3%) as a replacement percentage of the weight of the cement. It was noted through the results that there is a decrease in the thermal conductivity coefficient values, which ranged between (0.5–0.92) W/m °C in the mixtures containing Nano-silica, which means an increase in the thermal insulation ability of Nano-concrete by (41.8%, 53.15%, and 65.57%) respectively. A decrease in the specific heat capacity values was observed compared to conventional concrete. The values of the specific heat capacity of Nano-concrete increased to 896 when J/kg K for 3% Nano silica was added. Also, the results showed an increase in the compressive strength values of the models at rates of (21.49%, 24.25%, 32.45%) respectively, compared to the conventional concrete. We note that the maximum values of the compressive strength and the lowest value of the thermal conductivity coefficient were at a rate of (3%). It also became clear that the compressive strength also increases with age. Finally, Thermal insulation of buildings is the most effective way to save energy in buildings, and the importance of the current article stems from obtaining concrete with good mechanical properties and distinctive thermal insulation.

Abstract According to prior research, teacher readiness and capability are key contributors for successful transition towards disability inclusive education, yet in‐service teacher professional development for disability inclusion remains an under‐researched area. The key objective of this evidence and gap map (EGM) is to locate evidence on interventions for disability inclusion focused teacher professional development (TPD) in low‐to‐middle‐income‐countries (LMICs) in the Asia‐Pacific region. As such, it will illustrate different levels of evidence for TPD interventions as well as where there is no evidence (i.e., gaps). In other words, the EGM can make agencies aware where they might be operating in an area that is evidence‐free or evidence‐weak so they can take up interventions that are evidence‐based or collect evidence for the intervention they are presently supporting. Thus, the ultimate goal for the EGM is to assist funders and implementing agencies when making decisions as to how to support LMICs in the region to reach their aim of developing quality teachers for the global inclusive education agenda (target SDG 4.c).

The present study was designed to investigate the contribution of shrimp fisheries and the related activities to the economy Iraq. For this purpose a socioeconomic information and data were collected for one year (2014) period. Three marine penaeid shrimps were constituted the majority of shrimp fisheries in Iraqi marine water, these are: Penaeus semisulcatus, Metapenaeus affinis and Parapenaopsis styliferus. University of Basrah institutes basically the Marine Science Center, apparently is the marine institute implemented researches and studies on shrimp landing have been recorded at Al Nasser fishing Society of the Basrah / Faw city. On the other side, the study concluded that any real and accurate data on shrimp landing can be only obtained from fisherman on the fishing boat of the field. In fact the marine fishing area of Iraq is very limited and the investigation shows that there are nearly 150- 250 fishing boats, 450 – 600 fisher man and 70 – 110 fishmonger contributing in the shrimp sector. However, their economy doesn’t restricted on shrimp, but, usually cornering other fish resources. The results revealed that, the increasing of anthropological activities, overfishing, high by catch, the degradation of natural habitats such as coastal mudflats and Marshes and pollution are the basic factors reducing the shrimp stocks. For best monitoring and data collection of the shrimp resources, a networking information and data collection system is provided.

Study on Eastern River shrimp Macrobrachium nipponense in earthen ponds for raising fish in Garmat Ali campus ,Basrah , for the period of March to April 2013. Used four different ways to isolate the fungi of shrimp and diagnosed 7 species of Aspergillus flavus , A.niger, Aspergillus sp., A.terreus , Alternaria sp., Penicillium notatum and P. chrysogenum belong three genus of the fungus Aspergillus ,Alternaria and Penicillium. Statistical analysis showed significant differences between the number of diagnosed fungi isolates of each species in different insulation methods , and differences found in the number of isolates of each species of fungi among March and April. The study confirmed that the presence of pathological fungi Aspergillus and Penicillium have a large impact on shrimp diseases fungal infection, especially when the culture conditions are not appropriate.

CD39 is a marker of immune cells such as lymphocytes and monocytes. The CD39/CD73 pathway hydrolyzes ATP into adenosine, which has a potent immunosuppressive effect. CD39 regulates the function of a variety of immunologic cells through the purinergic signaling pathways. CD39+ T cells have been implicated in viral infections, including Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), Cytomegalovirus (CMV), viral hepatitis, and Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) infections. The expression of CD39 is an indicator of lymphocyte exhaustion, which develops during chronicity. During RNA viral infections, the CD39 marker can profile the populations of CD4+ T lymphocytes into two populations, T-effector lymphocytes, and T-regulatory lymphocytes, where CD39 is predominantly expressed on the T-regulatory cells. The level of CD39 in T lymphocytes can predict the disease progression, antiviral immune responses, and the response to antiviral drugs. Besides, the percentage of CD39 and CD73 in B lymphocytes and monocytes can affect the status of viral infections. In this review, we investigate the impact of CD39 and CD39-expressing cells on viral infections and how the frequency and percentage of CD39+ immunologic cells determine disease prognosis.

This study aimed to investigate the monthly changes in the diversity and abundance of Odonata naiad's species for the period from December 2017 to November 2018 from three temporary pools in different areas of Basrah Province, including Abu Gossra-Abu Al-Kassib District (station 1), Al-Masehab- Al-Hartha district (station 2) and Al-Jalal - Al-Madina District (Station 3). Some environmental factors were measured, as water temperatures ranged between (12-38 ° C) while the salinity ranged between (1.2-14 ‰). Ten species of Odonata naiads were recorded, including eight species of Suborder Anisoptera and two species of Suborder Zygoptera. The highest diversity of naiads (9 species) was in St.1 and St.2, and the lowest diversity (8 species) was in St.3. Statistical analysis showed significant effect of environmental factors on the abundance of naiads during sampling period between stations and months. The highest relative abundance was 70% for Crocothemis servilia during January, while the lowest relative abundance was 0.98. % for Diplacodes lefebvrei during April. Environmental indexes of Anisoptera naiads in Basrah showed that their communities are poor in diversity and turbulent, balanced or semi balanced according to the standard values. Jacquard index showed the highest qualitative similarity between St.2 and St.3, and the lowest between St.1 and St.2.

Background and objectives: Hemangioma is an extremely uncommon benign tumor of blood vessels, which occurs mostly during childhood, particularly in the head and neck regions, it remains unusual in the oral cavity and exceedingly rare in the tongue, and larynx. This report recorded a patient's case of cavernous tongue hemangioma and explained how this case was treated and a review of the literature. Methods: Review of the literature with a new case presentation. Results: Here we report a case of a 49-year-old female patient was referred to our clinic at Rania Medical City Private-Hospital, Iraq country with the complaint of slowly enlarging mass and bleeding. The patient was diagnosed with multiple cavernous hemangioma of the lounge, larynx, pharynx, epiglottis, and lip. The patient was diagnosed by CT-angiography. Treatment consisted of surgical resection. Healing have occurred after 1 month of surgery. From 18 articles we obtained after searching (Google scholar and PubMed), we selected those papers focused on oral cavity, most of the cases were from India between 1961 and 2021, the average age range was 40 yrs. Females constituted the major gender. Dyspnea and swelling accounted for many complaints, especially from varied sides of the tongue and pharynx. Almost all cases have cavernous hemangioma regarding the histological types. Concerning treatment, surgery especially under general anaesthesia were the major. Nevertheless, bleeding was the major recorded complications, otherwise not any other significant complication were seen. Overall, the majority of cases had nearly 1 year of follow-up according to the year of the procedure. Recovering after the procedures were concluded the majority of recorded results. Conclusion: The authors declare that cavernous hemangioma is extremely rare in adults, particularly in oro-pharynx, it needs to be included in the differential diagnosis of oral lesions, and there are many complications post operatively such as hemorrhage, it needs to be followed up to control complications.

The present study was conducted to elucidate the effect of different antioxidants on the semen quality of cryopreserved yak semen. The ejaculates found suitable were extended (1:10) with 4 different Tris extenders by split sample technique containing different antioxidants in each of 3 extenders, viz. Taurine @ 50 mM, Trehalose @ 100 mM or vitamin E @ 2 mM and one control (without additive). The sperm motility, live sperm, HOSTreacted sperm, total incidence of acrosomal changes and extracellular release of ALT and AST differed significantly between antioxidants. Total sperm motility, live sperm and HOST-reacted sperm were significantly higher and total incidence of acrosomal changes and extracellular release of AST were significantly lower in extender containing antioxidants than that in control. The difference between taurine, trehalose and vitamin E was not significant for parameters like sperm motility, HOST-reacted sperm and extracellular release of ALT. The per cent live sperm was significantly higher and total incidence of acrosomal changes was significantly lower for taurine than for trehalose and vitamin E. The extracellular release of ALT was significantly lower in extender containing taurine or trehalose than in control while the extracellular release of AST was significantly lower in the extender containing taurine than that in containing trehalose, vitamin E and control. The findings of the present study revealed that addition of taurine, trehalose and vitamin E in Tris extender significantly improved the post thaw quality of yak semen. Among the antioxidants evaluated, 50 mM of taurine in Tris extender could be effectively used to obtain better quality of frozen thawed yak semen.

BACKGROUND: Studies have shown that 4%–17% of acute ischemic strokes (AISs) occur in patients hospitalized for another reason; scanty data are available about the care delivery and outcome of this patient population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All consecutive inhospital AISs over a 10-year period at our comprehensive stroke center were included in the study. We compared the meantime from last known neurologically intact to symptom detection and also eligibility for acute treatment of patients based on their physical location in the hospital with respect to the level of care when they were found to have the stroke symptoms. RESULTS: Fifty-three patients suffered inhospital AIS during this period (28 in intensive care units/emergency department [ICUs/ED] vs. 25 in regular floors). Only in four patients (7.5%), initial brain imaging was done within 25 min from symptom recognition (as recommended by the American Heart Association/American Society of Anesthesiologists guidelines). Forty-two (79%) underwent brain imaging within 6 h of symptom recognition; of them, 11 (26%) received intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) within the first 4.5 h of symptom onset and 7 (17%) underwent endovascular treatment (EVT). The mean (±standard deviation) time in minutes from last known neurologically intact to symptom detection for floor patients was significantly longer compared to the ICU/ED patients (194 [±149] vs. 74 [±45], P = 0.0003). Patients admitted to the ICU/ED had more chance of being recognized earlier and being eligible for IVT or/and EVT compared to the patients admitted to the regular floors (44% vs. 25%, P = 0.14); however, the difference did not reach statistical significance. CONCLUSIONS: ICU/ED patients had a significantly shorter time to stroke symptom detection from last known neurologically intact when compared to the regular floor patients. Furthermore, they had a trend toward a higher likelihood of being eligible for acute treatment compared to the regular floors, although the result did not reach statistical significance.

Background: Breast cancer (BC) is the most commonly occurring cancer that records a significant percentage of all cancers among women. The most common type of BC is ductal carcinoma. The trace elements, selenium (Se) and iron (Fe), have an important role in the metabolism of human body in which they have very vital biological effect on the enzymes involved in antioxidants and immune system. Materials and Methods: Venous blood samples were collected into plain vials from 50 patients and 50 controls, which were transported to the laboratory on ice and centrifuged at 3000 rpm for 15 min, and the serum was stored at −4°C until the day of mineral estimation, using SHIMADZU Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy AA7000 using Graphite Furnace Technique. Results: There was a significant (P < 0.05) decrease in the concentration of Se in serum samples of BC patients as on comparison with the healthy individuals. Level of difference of Fe remains insignificant (P > 0.05) in the serum of BC patients as compared with normal healthy controls. Conclusion: We found a significant association between trace elements (serum Se and Fe) with BC.

The climate modelling community has trialled a large number of metrics for evaluating the temporal performance of general circulation models (GCMs), while very little attention has been given to the assessment of their spatial performance, which is equally important. This study evaluated the performance of 36 Coupled Model Intercomparison Project 5 (CMIP5) GCMs in relation to their skills in simulating mean annual, monsoon, winter, pre-monsoon, and post-monsoon precipitation and maximum and minimum temperature over Pakistan using state-of-the-art spatial metrics, SPAtial EFficiency, fractions skill score, Goodman–Kruskal's lambda, Cramer's V, Mapcurves, and Kling–Gupta efficiency, for the period 1961–2005. The multi-model ensemble (MME) precipitation and maximum and minimum temperature data were generated through the intelligent merging of simulated precipitation and maximum and minimum temperature of selected GCMs employing random forest (RF) regression and simple mean (SM) techniques. The results indicated some differences in the ranks of GCMs for different spatial metrics. The overall ranks indicated NorESM1-M, MIROC5, BCC-CSM1-1, and ACCESS1-3 as the best GCMs in simulating the spatial patterns of mean annual, monsoon, winter, pre-monsoon, and post-monsoon precipitation and maximum and minimum temperature over Pakistan. MME precipitation and maximum and minimum temperature generated based on the best-performing GCMs showed more similarities with observed precipitation and maximum and minimum temperature compared to precipitation and maximum and minimum temperature simulated by individual GCMs. The MMEs developed using RF displayed better performance than the MMEs based on SM. Multiple spatial metrics have been used for the first time for selecting GCMs based on their capability to mimic the spatial patterns of annual and seasonal precipitation and maximum and minimum temperature. The approach proposed in the present study can be extended to any number of GCMs and climate variables and applicable to any region for the suitable selection of an ensemble of GCMs to reduce uncertainties in climate projections.

Abstract With the advent of microinvasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS), the spectrum of modalities available to manage patients with this chronic and heterogeneous condition has broadened. Despite its novelty however, there has been a rapid evolution in the development of a multitude of devices, each targeting a structure along the aqueous drainage pathway. A growing body of evidence has demonstrated IOP and medication burden reduction, and a more favorable safety profile with MIGS procedures in contrast to traditional incisional surgeries. Among the array of MIGS, the Hydrus® Microstent (Ivantis, Inc., Irvine, CA) is a recent FDA approved device, designed to bypass the trabecular meshwork and provide a scaffold for Schlemm’s canal. The objective of this article is to review the Hydrus from conception to clinical use, and present data on its efficacy and safety to date. The available literature has shown promise, however inherent to all novel devices, only long-term monitoring will ensure sustained IOP control and an acceptable safety profile. Surgical advancements in glaucoma have revolutionized the field, and continued research and development will establish these approaches in clinical treatment algorithms.

The changing characteristics of aridity over a larger spatiotemporal scale have gained interest in recent years due to climate change. The long-term (1901–2016) changes in spatiotemporal patterns of annual and seasonal aridity during two major crop growing seasons of Pakistan, Kharif and Rabi, are evaluated in this study using gridded precipitation and potential evapotranspiration (PET) data. The UNESCO aridity index was used to estimate aridity at each grid point for all the years between 1901 and 2016. The temporal changes in aridity and its associations with precipitation and PET are evaluated by implementing a moving window of 50 years of data with an 11-year interval. The modified Mann–Kendall (MMK) trend test is applied to estimate unidirectional change by eliminating the effect of natural variability of climate, and Pettitt's test is used to detect year of change in aridity. The results revealed that the climate over 60 % of Pakistan (mainly in southern parts) is arid. The spatial patterns of aridity trends show a strong influence of the changes in precipitation on the aridity trend. The increasing trend in aridity (drier) is noticed in the southwest, where precipitation is low during Kharif, while there is a decreasing trend (wetter) in the Rabi season in the region which receives high precipitation due to western disturbances. The annual and Kharif aridity is found to decrease (wetter) at a rate of 0.0001 to 0.0002 per year in the northeast, while Kharif and Rabi aridity are found to increase (drier) at some locations in the south at a rate of −0.0019 to −0.0001 per year. The spatial patterns of aridity changes show a shift from arid to the semi-arid (wetter) climate in annual and Kharif over a large area while showing a shift from arid to hyper-arid (drier) region during Rabi in a small area. Most of the significant changes in precipitation and aridity are observed in the years between 1971 and 1980. Overall, aridity is found to increase (drier) in 0.52 %, 4.44 % and 0.52 % of the area and decrease (wetter) in 11.75 %, 7.57 % and 9.66 % of the area for annual, Rabi and Kharif seasons respectively during 1967–2016 relative to 1901–1950.

Abstract Introduction Prospective, open-label, non-randomized, single site study to assess the safety and tolerability of a multi-pressure dial. Methods 30 healthy subjects received application of negative pressure (–15 mmHg) in one eye for 30 minutes and ambient atmospheric pressure in the contralateral eye. To evaluate safety, the primary outcome measures included best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), intraocular pressure (IOP) changes from baseline, slit-lamp and dilated fundus examination findings, and rate of adverse events. Exploratory analyses included in this study also evaluated changes from baseline measurement in tear break-up time (TBUT) and RNFL thickness measured by OCT. In addition to baseline screening, subjects underwent testing and negative pressure application on day 0 and returned 1 week after the initial visit for clinical testing. The follow-up visit did not include use of the multi-pressure dial (MPD) but repeated baseline testing and evaluated for adverse events. Results No adverse events were reported in the study. After short-term wear of the MPD on day 0, there was a minimal but statistically significant increase of half a line (LogMAR) in BCDVA for study eyes; this increase was not present at 1 week. There were no observed changes in cup-disk ratio and TBUT 1 week after the initial testing. There was a statistically significant pressure reduction in both study and fellow eyes at 1 week following the study, but clinical significance has yet to be determined. Conclusion The MPD, which consists of a pair of goggles connected to a handheld, programmable pump, was well tolerated by subjects enrolled in the study. Key safety parameters remained stable after short-term exposure. The favorable safety results of this study support the safety profile of the MPD and promote further investigation of the device as a potential treatment of glaucoma. Funding Equinox Ophthalmic, Inc.
