206. Concurrent training : neuroendocrine and molecular mechanisms of strength and endurance training incompatibility

Abstract

Combining strength and endurance training within the same regimen is aptly referred to as “concurrent training”. Research conducted over the previous 3 decades has indicated concurrent training can result in attenuated development of strength, power and hypertrophy when compared to strength training in isolation. Despite extensive research the mechanisms contributing to this so called “interference effect” are yet to be fully elucidated, as is the influence of manipulating acute training programme variables within a concurrent regimen. As such, the purposes of this thesis were to investigate and draw conclusions regarding underlying physiological mechanisms relating to the interference effect. Additionally, this thesis sought to examine the effects of manipulating programme variables, including frequency and sequencing of exercise within concurrent training regimens on strength related adaptation. The findings of this thesis indicate overall training volume and frequency of endurance training within a concurrent intervention influences the presence and magnitude of the inhibition of strength development. Concurrent training volumes of 3 d·wk-1 elicited muted strength development, whereas lower frequencies did not. Whilst interference was not attributable to neuromuscular factors, it was reported that cortisol was only elevated following higher training frequencies, indicating training stress and catabolism may contribute to interference. Additionally, the sequencing of strength and endurance training can influence endocrine and signalling responses associated with strength adaptation, and it appears strength prior to endurance elicits greater increases in growth associated signalling. The findings of this thesis indicate that overall training stress influences the presence and magnitude of interference experienced, and is reflected in catabolic endocrine responses. Additionally, strength prior to endurance training promotes more favourable anabolic signalling than vice versa, which over time may contribute to greater strength type adaptations.

Abstract

A description is given of the algorithms implemented in the AstroBEAR adaptive mesh refinement code for ideal magnetohydrodynamics. The code provides several high resolution, shock capturing schemes which are constructed to maintain conserved quantities of the flow in a finite volume sense. Divergence free magnetic field topologies are maintained to machine precision by collating the components of the magnetic field on a cell-interface staggered grid and utilizing the constrained transport approach for integrating the induction equations. The maintenance of magnetic field topologies on adaptive grids is achieved using prolongation and restriction operators which preserve the divergence and curl of the magnetic field across co-located grids of different resolution. The robustness and correctness of the code is demonstrated by comparing the numerical solution of various tests with analytical solutions or previously published numerical solutions obtained by other codes., Comment: Additional Tests shown. Abstract

A group of teacher education faculty, state certification officers, and National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) staff share what they have learned from State-NCATE joint review and accreditation visits. In the state-NCATE-based approach, the NCATE reviews the operation of the units, and the state reviews content preparation programs using its own process and standards. Dilemmas concerning the joint review that are addressed include: (1) issues of partnership versus ownership; (2) process versus product frameworks in planning; and (3) proactive versus reactive measures for institutions of higher learning and state organizations for the accreditation of teacher education. Conceptual and practical suggestions are offered for working collaboratively to develop high-quality teacher education programs and successful joint review and accreditation visits. The successful cooperation between states and the NCATE has been demonstrated at the Catholic University of America and Gallaudet University. The joint review process will work successfully if all constituents understand that collaboration efforts are about the children who will benefit. (Contains 1 table and 11 references.) (Author/SLD)

232. The response of low-latitude calcareous phytoplankton to global change through the Eocene-Oligocene transition

Abstract

This thesis documents the response of calcareous phytoplankton assemblages to major changes in global climate during the Eocene-Oligocene transition (EOT) at three low-latitude sites Tanzanian Drilling Project (TDP) Sites 12 & 17 (southern coastal Tanzania), Deep Sea Drilling Site 242 (Mozambique Channel, western Indian Ocean) and St Stephens Quarry (Alabama, USA). High-resolution nannofossil count data from all three study sites clearly indicate a major change in coccolithophore assemblage compositions directly coincident with the first step change in the positive oxygen isotope (d180) shift into the early Oligocene Glacial Maximum (EOGM). This is followed by continued shifts in coccolithophore assemblages in the vicinity of the Eocene-Oligocene boundary to reach new "Oligocene" assemblage compositions before the second step in duO and peak glacial conditions of the EOGM. At all sites there is a marked increase in the abundance of Cyclicargolithus floridanus (>5um) and to a lesser extent Sphenolithus predistentus, combined with a general loss of warm-water and oligotrophic taxa including Calcidiscus protoannulus, discoaster and holococcolith species. This consistent pattern of biotic change, from sites with varying species compositions and preservation states, indicates a large and geographically widespread perturbation in the low-latitude surface water environment and is consistent with new trace metal paleothermometry that indicates a significant, 2-3 C, cooling of surface waters in the earliest stages of the EOT. An exceptionally-well preserved and highly diverse nannofossil assemblage from late Eocene-early Oligocene (nannofossil zones NP19/20 to NP21 Martini 1971) sediments of coastal Tanzania is described and its implications for the Cenozoic history of the coccolithophores is discussed. This consists of a total of 114 species-equivalent morphotypes, one new genus (Pocillithus), six new species (Reticulofenestra macmillanii, Blackites culter, Rhabdosphaera suptilis, Orthozygus occultus, Orthozygus arms, Pocillithus spinulifer) and a previously unknown Paleogene deep-photic zone assemblage including representatives of the extant genera Gladiolithus, Algirosphaera and Acanthoica.

233. America's Gamble: Lotteries and the Finance of Education.

Abstract

By the late 1980s, 28 states in the United States had instituted lotteries as a supplemental means of financing public education. This paper presents findings of a study that examined the claim that state lotteries enhance spending for public education. Regression analysis, conducted on data for the year 1987, compared lottery and nonlottery jurisdictions among the 50 states. Four dependent measures--two indicating support for education and two indicating tax effort for education--were regressed on seven state socioeconomic and demographic variables. Two variables indicated the presence or absence of a state lottery and any earmarking legislation. In 1987, 18 states had adopted policies that established public education as a major recipient of lottery revenue. The findings reaffirm the importance of state wealth, as measured by per capita income, in determining support for education. The claim that lotteries influence state aid or school spending was not supported. When per capita income was controlled, the presence of a lottery did not account for a significant amount of interstate variation in school finance. Wealthy states adopted lotteries in advance of other states; lotteries did not make the states wealthy. Finally, the results show that lotteries indirectly reflect the public's perception of the tax burden. It is recommended that states renounce lottery profits altogether. (LMI)

234. Do State Lotteries Enhance the Financing of Public Education?

Abstract

By the late 1980s, fiscal crises, tax revolt measures, education reform, and other factors had prompted 28 states to institute state lotteries as a supplemental means of public finance. This paper presents findings of a study that examined whether or not lotteries enhance public education spending. Data for 1987 from all 50 states were compared and examined using regression analysis to answer the question: Is school finance enhanced in lottery versus nonlottery jurisdictions? The analysis included four dependent variables, two indicating "support for education" and two "tax effort for education" and two independent variables indicating the presence or absence of a state lottery. Findings showed that state lottery revenues did not help schools. State per-capita income was the most powerful environmental determinant of school support. Wealthy states that adopted lotteries in advance of other states provided higher levels of school support than nonlottery states; lotteries alone did not make states wealthy. It is recommended that states renounce lotteries altogether. Six tables are included. Contains 14 references. (LMI)

235. Beyond Vouchers: Promoting Efficiency in Education.

Abstract

In the past two decades choice has become a major policy proposal for promoting efficiency in schooling. This paper argues that it would be both efficient and feasible to remove government from its present roles in school finance and pupil assignment. The first part examines the revenue side of school finance and identifies four types of efficiency--technical, price, exchange, and allocative (McMahon, 1982). A conclusion is that educational vouchers fall short of meeting these types of efficiency, partly because they rely on government finance. An alternative system of school choice that relies on private finance is proposed: each family contracts with a school to provide education in exchange for a share of the student's income earned over her or his lifetime or other extended time period. This acts as a tuition deferment and gives investors in students' education an equity stake in students' future earning power. Schools will enroll students at lower costs to attract higher enrollments and compete on the basis of effective programs and choice. Because the plan is based on free-market principles, it is not appropriate for the proportion of the population that is incapable of earning a wage. Schools would enroll only those students whom they could educate at a profit. Finally, it is argued that people make better choices if they are paying for something than if government taxes gave it to them. (LMI)
