Abstract

Gaia and LSST are two projects that will perform large, multi-epoch, surveys of the sky. Gaia will provide an all-sky map with trigonometric parallaxes of unprecedented accuracy, proper motion and photometric measurements for about a billion stars with G magnitudes up to ∼ 20. LSST, on the other hand, will extend this map to r magnitudes up to ∼ 27 over half of the sky, detecting about 10 billion stars. In this presentation, we will summarise and compare the performances of the two projects, and identify their specific strengths and synergies. It will be shown how the two projects are complementary, Gaia mapping the Milky Way's disk with unprecedented detail, and LSST extending this map to objects located up to the edge of the Galactic halo. A specific focus will be given to the question of multi-epoch observations of these projects and their respective performances.

23rd European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition, 1-5 September 2008, Valencia, Spain; 2596-2598, This paper discusses the application and results of Laser Beam Induced Current (LBIC) characterisation of CdTe/CdS solar cells with different arsenic concentrations ranging from 1×1017 to 2×1019 atoms cm-3. Results are presented on the effect of arsenic concentration in the bulk in terms of the induced current, uniformity and lateral collection. A plot of the arsenic concentration versus LBIC response and device efficiency results in a maximum in induced current and device efficiency at 2×1018 atoms cm-3. Each device scan shows microscopic variations in the induced current with new linear “furrow defects” features that are too large to correlate directly to the grain boundaries. The nature of these furrow defects is discussed in terms of spatial variations in alloying and arsenic doping.

Abstract

The North Atlantic Marine Boundary Layer Experiment (NAMBLEX), involving over 50 scientists from 12 institutions, took place at Mace Head, Ireland (53.32° N, 9.90° W), between 23 July and 4 September 2002. A wide range of state-of-the-art instrumentation enabled detailed measurements of the boundary layer structure and atmospheric composition in the gas and aerosol phase to be made, providing one of the most comprehensive in situ studies of the marine boundary layer to date. This overview paper describes the aims of the NAMBLEX project in the context of previous field campaigns in the Marine Boundary Layer (MBL), the overall layout of the site, a summary of the instrumentation deployed, the temporal coverage of the measurement data, and the numerical models used to interpret the field data. Measurements of some trace species were made for the first time during the campaign, which was characterised by predominantly clean air of marine origin, but more polluted air with higher levels of NOx originating from continental regions was also experienced. This paper provides a summary of the meteorological measurements and Planetary Boundary Layer (PBL) structure measurements, presents time series of some of the longer-lived trace species (O3, CO, H2, DMS, CH4, NMHC, NOx, NOy, PAN) and summarises measurements of other species that are described in more detail in other papers within this special issue, namely oxygenated VOCs, HCHO, peroxides, organohalogenated species, a range of shorter lived halogen species (I2, OIO, IO, BrO), NO3 radicals, photolysis frequencies, the free radicals OH, HO2 and (HO2+ΣRO2), as well as a summary of the aerosol measurements. NAMBLEX was supported by measurements made in the vicinity of Mace Head using the NERC Dornier-228 aircraft. Using ECMWF wind-fields, calculations were made of the air-mass trajectories arriving at Mace Head during NAMBLEX, and were analysed together with both meteorological and trace-gas measurements. In this paper a chemical climatology for the duration of the campaign is presented to interpret the distribution of air-mass origins and emission sources, and to provide a convenient framework of air-mass classification that is used by other papers in this issue for the interpretation of observed variability in levels of trace gases and aerosols.

250. Relation between cord blood mercury levels and early child development in a World Trade Center cohort

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to determine whether prenatal mercury exposure, including potential releases from the World Trade Center (WTC) disaster, adversely affects fetal growth and child development. METHODS: We determined maternal and umbilical cord blood total mercury of nonsmoking women who delivered at term in lower Manhattan after 11 September 2001, and measured birth outcomes and child development. RESULTS: Levels of total mercury in cord and maternal blood were not significantly higher for women who resided or worked within i or 2 miles of the WTC in the month after 11 September, compared with women who lived and worked farther away. Average cord mercury levels were more than twice maternal levels, and both were elevated in women who reported eating fish/seafood during pregnancy. Regression analyses showed no significant association between (ln) cord or maternal blood total mercury and birth outcomes. Log cord mercury was inversely associated with the Bayley Scales of Infant Development psychomotor score [Psychomotor Development Index (PDI)] at 36 months (b=-4.2, p=0.007) and with Performance (b=-3.4, p=0.023), Verbal (b=-2.9, p=0.023), and Full IQ scores (b=-3.8, p=0.002) on the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence, Revised (WPPSI-R), at 48 months, after controlling for fish/seafood consumption and other confounders. Fish/seafood consumption during pregnancy was significantly associated with a 5.6- to 9.9-point increase in 36-month PDI, and 48-month Verbal and Full IQ scores. CONCLUSIONS: Blood mercury was not significantly raised in women living or working close to the WTC site in the weeks after 11 September 2001.
