Abstract

The metal-graphene contact resistance is a technological bottleneck for the realization of viable graphene based electronics. We report a useful model to find the gate tunable components of this resistance determined by the sequential tunneling of carriers between the 3D-metal and 2D-graphene underneath followed by Klein tunneling to the graphene in the channel. This model quantifies the intrinsic factors that control that resistance, including the effect of unintended chemical doping. Abstract

This paper investigates the sum-rate gains brought by power allocation strategies in multicell massive multipleinput multiple-output systems, assuming time-division duplex transmission. For both uplink and downlink, we derive tractable expressions for the achievable rate with zero-forcing receivers and precoders respectively. To avoid high complexity joint optimization across the network, we propose a scheduling mechanism for power allocation, where in a single time slot, only cells that do not interfere with each other adjust their transmit powers. Based on this, corresponding transmit power allocation strategies are derived, aimed at maximizing the sum rate per-cell. These schemes are shown to bring considerable gains over equal power allocation for practical antenna configurations (e.g., up to a few hundred). However, with fixed number of users (N), these gains diminish as M turns to infinity, and equal power allocation becomes optimal. A different conclusion is drawn for the case where both M and N grow large together, in which case: (i) improved rates are achieved as M grows with fixed M/N ratio, and (ii) the relative gains over the equal power allocation diminish as M/N grows. Moreover, we also provide applicable values of M/N under an acceptable power allocation gain threshold, which can be used as to determine when the proposed power allocation schemes yield appreciable gains, and when they do not. From the network point of view, the proposed scheduling approach can achieve almost the same performance as the joint power allocation after one scheduling round, with much reduced complexity.

203. Large Dimensional Analysis of Robust M-Estimators of Covariance with Outliers

Abstract

A large dimensional characterization of robust M-estimators of covariance (or scatter) is provided under the assumption that the dataset comprises independent (essentially Gaussian) legitimate samples as well as arbitrary deterministic samples, referred to as outliers. Building upon recent random matrix advances in the area of robust statistics, we specifically show that the so-called Maronna M-estimator of scatter asymptotically behaves similar to well-known random matrices when the population and sample sizes grow together to infinity. The introduction of outliers leads the robust estimator to behave asymptotically as the weighted sum of the sample outer products, with a constant weight for all legitimate samples and different weights for the outliers. A fine analysis of this structure reveals importantly that the propensity of the M-estimator to attenuate (or enhance) the impact of outliers is mostly dictated by the alignment of the outliers with the inverse population covariance matrix of the legitimate samples. Thus, robust M-estimators can bring substantial benefits over more simplistic estimators such as the per-sample normalized version of the sample covariance matrix, which is not capable of differentiating the outlying samples. The analysis shows that, within the class of Maronna's estimators of scatter, the Huber estimator is most favorable for rejecting outliers. On the contrary, estimators more similar to Tyler's scale invariant estimator (often preferred in the literature) run the risk of inadvertently enhancing some outliers., Comment: Submitted to IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing

Abstract

The multifunctionality feature of graphene field-effect transistors (GFETs) is exploited here to design circuit building blocks of high-data-rate modulators by using a physics-based compact model. Educated device performance projections are obtained with the experimentally calibrated model and used to choose an appropriate improved feasible GFET for these applications. Phase-shift and frequency-shift keying (PSK and FSK) modulation schemes are obtained with 0.6   G Hz GFET-based multifunctional circuits used alternatively in different operation modes: inverting and in-phase amplification and frequency multiplication. An adequate baseband signal applied to the transistors' input also serves to enhance the device and circuit performance reproducibility since the impact of traps is diminished. Quadrature PSK is also achieved by combining two GFET-based multifunctional circuits. This device circuit co-design proposal intends to boost the heterogeneous implementation of graphene devices with incumbent technologies into a single chip: the baseband pulses can be generated with CMOS technology as a front end of line and the multifunctional GFET-based circuits as a back end of line. Abstract

We show that the problem of analyzing the outage probability in cellular systems affected by co-channel interference and background noise is mathematically equivalent to the problem of analyzing the wireless information-theoretic security in terms of the maximum secrecy rate in fading channels. Hence, these both apparently unrelated problems can be addressed by using a common approach. Abstract

We consider multiple-antenna signal detection of primary user transmission signals by a secondary user receiver in cognitive radio networks. The optimal detector is analyzed for the scenario where the number of primary user signals is no less than the number of receive antennas at the secondary user. We first derive exact expressions for the moments of the generalized likelihood ratio test (GLRT) statistic, yielding approximations for the false alarm and detection probabilities. We then show that the normalized GLRT statistic converges in distribution to a Gaussian random variable when the number of antennas and observations grow large at the same rate. Further, using results from large random matrix theory, we derive expressions to compute the detection probability without explicit knowledge of the channel, and then particularize these expressions for two scenarios of practical interest: 1) a single primary user sending spatially multiplexed signals, and 2) multiple spatially distributed primary users. Abstract

This paper characterizes the performance of coordinated beamforming with dynamic clustering. A downlink model based on stochastic geometry is put forth to analyze the performance of such base station (BS) coordination strategy. Analytical expressions for the complementary cumulative distribution function (CCDF) of the instantaneous signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) are derived in terms of relevant system parameters, chiefly the number of BSs forming the coordination clusters, the number of antennas per BS, and the pathloss exponent. Utilizing this CCDF, with pilot overheads further incorporated into the analysis, we formulate the optimization of the BS coordination clusters for a given fading coherence. Our results indicate that (i) coordinated beamforming is most beneficial to users that are in the outer part of their cells yet in the inner part of their coordination cluster, and that (ii) the optimal cluster cardinality for the typical user is small and it scales with the fading coherence. Simulation results verify the exactness of the SIR distributions derived for stochastic geometries, which are further compared with the corresponding distributions for deterministic grid networks., Comment: Revised version submitted to IEEE TWC

Abstract

We have used a multi-scale physics-based model to predict how the grain size and different grain boundary morphologies of polycrystalline graphene will impact the performance metrics of graphene field-effect transistors. We show that polycrystallinity has a negative impact on the transconductance, which translates to a severe degradation of the maximum and cutoff frequencies. On the other hand, polycrystallinity has a positive impact on current saturation, and a negligible effect on the intrinsic gain. These results reveal the complex role played by graphene grain boundaries, and can be used to guide the further development and optimization of graphene-based electronic devices., Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures

We demonstrate the feasibility of multilevel recording in Pt/Bi(1-d)FeO3/SrRuO3 capacitors using the ferroelectric resistive switching phenomenon exhibited by the Pt/Bi(1-d)FeO3 interface. A tunable population of up and down ferroelectric domains able to modulate the Schottky barrier height at the Pt/Bi(1-d)FeO3 interface can be achieved by means of either a collection of SET/RESET voltages or current compliances. Abstract

El proyecto 'Sobre las religiones y las espiritualidades: un podcast para la inclusión' (nº 242 Convocatoria 2023-2024 Innova Docencia UCM) propone la implementación de una serie dinámicas de exploración didáctica de la diversidad religiosa existente en nuestra sociedad a través de las redes sociales y de herramientas audiovisuales -como el podcast- que han venido ganando popularidad a lo largo y ancho del globo, muy especialmente entre la población joven. Con la participación de la comunidad científica, de otras iniciativas de divulgación en este campo y también de los propios creyentes en el podcast @quediosnospilleconfesdas, este proyecto de divulgación científica pretende, por tanto, primero, visibilizar la diversidad religiosa y ofrecer una imagen de la misma real y no distorsionada, que sea representativa de nuestras realidades histórica y sociológica de la diversidad religiosa, libre de estereotipos y prejuicios; y resaltar la importancia de dar voz y de respetar a los diferentes grupos religiosos que integran nuestra sociedad, así como enriquecer nuestros conocimientos sobre la pluralidad de creencias, convicciones, prácticas y ritos que se manifiestan en lo social, cultural y político. Y correlativamente a ello, ampliar el área de estudios del fenómeno religioso, abarcando otras creencias religiosas más o menos “divergentes” que, a lo largo de la historia, han podido influenciar y, en su caso, configurar nuestros sistemas de creencias y ritos (festividades, instituciones, valores…). Como resultado se han emitido entre septiembre de 2023 y mayo de 2024 un total de 25 podcasts, 54 posts divulgativos, 45 vídeos cortos y dos grandes eventos: un debate en el Círculo de Bellas Artes de Madrid y un congreso en la Facultad de Filología de la UCM.
