Abstract

The Global Positioning System (GPS) has become a part of our daily life with the primary goal of providing geopositioning service. For an unmanned aerial system (UAS), geolocalization ability is an extremely important necessity which is achieved using Inertial Navigation System (INS) with the GPS at its heart. Without geopositioning service, UAS is unable to fly to its destination or come back home. Unfortunately, GPS signals can be jammed and suffer from a multipath problem in urban canyons. Our goal is to propose an alternative approach to geolocalize a UAS when GPS signal is degraded or denied. Considering UAS has a downward-looking camera on its platform that can acquire real-time images as the platform flies, we apply modern deep learning techniques to achieve geolocalization. In particular, we perform image matching to establish latent feature conjugates between UAS acquired imagery and satellite orthophotos. A typical application of feature matching suffers from high-rise buildings and new constructions in the field that introduce uncertainties into homography estimation, hence results in poor geolocalization performance. Instead, we extract GIS information from OpenStreetMap (OSM) to semantically segment matched features into building and terrain classes. The GIS mask works as a filter in selecting semantically matched features that enhance coplanarity conditions and the UAS geolocalization accuracy. 206. UAS Navigation in the Real World Using Visual Observation

Abstract

This paper presents a novel end-to-end Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) navigation approach for long-range visual navigation in the real world. Inspired by dual-process visual navigation system of human's instinct: environment understanding and landmark recognition, we formulate the UAS navigation task into two same phases. Our system combines the reinforcement learning (RL) and image matching approaches. First, the agent learns the navigation policy using RL in the specified environment. To achieve this, we design an interactive UASNAV environment for the training process. Once the agent learns the navigation policy, which means 'familiarized themselves with the environment', we let the UAS fly in the real world to recognize the landmarks using image matching method and take action according to the learned policy. During the navigation process, the UAS is embedded with single camera as the only visual sensor. We demonstrate that the UAS can learn navigating to the destination hundreds meters away from the starting point with the shortest path in the real world scenario.

Abstract

The intrinsic magnetic topological insulator MnBi2Te4 provides a feasible pathway to high temperature quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect as well as various novel topological quantum phases. Although quantized transport properties have been observed in exfoliated MnBi2Te4 thin flakes, it remains a big challenge to achieve molecular beam epitaxy (MBE)-grown MnBi2Te4 thin films even close to the quantized regime. In this work, we report the realization of quantized anomalous Hall resistivity in MBE-grown MnBi2Te4 thin films with the chemical potential tuned by both controlled in-situ oxygen exposure and top gating. We find that elongated post-annealing obviously elevates the temperature to achieve quantization of the Hall resistivity, but also increases the residual longitudinal resistivity, indicating a picture of high-quality QAH puddles weakly coupled by tunnel barriers. These results help to clarify the puzzles in previous experimental studies on MnBi2Te4 and to find a way out of the big difficulty in obtaining MnBi2Te4 samples showing quantized transport properties., Comment: 4 figures

Abstract

In Drosophila melanogaster, processing of gustatory information and controlling feeding behavior are executed by neural circuits located in the subesophageal zone (SEZ) of the brain.1 Gustatory receptor neurons (GRNs) project their axons in the primary gustatory center (PGC), which is located in the SEZ.1,2,3,4 To address the function of the PGC, we need detailed information about the different classes of gustatory interneurons that frame the PGC. In this work, we screened large collections of driver lines for SEZ interneuron-specific labeling and subsequently used candidate lines to access the SEZ neuroblast lineages. We converted 130 Gal4 lines to LexA drivers and carried out functional screening using calcium imaging. We found one neuroblast lineage, TRdm, whose neurons responded to both sweet and bitter tastants, and formed green fluorescent protein (GFP) reconstitution across synaptic partners (GRASP)-positive synapses with sweet sensory neurons. TRdm neurons express the inhibitory transmitter GABA, and silencing these neurons increases appetitive feeding behavior. These results demonstrate that TRdm generates a class of inhibitory local neurons that control taste sensitivity in Drosophila.

214. Autocrine VEGF-B signaling maintains lipid synthesis and mitochondrial fitness to support T cell immune responses

Abstract

T cells rewire their metabolic activities to meet the demand of immune responses, but how to coordinate the immune response by metabolic regulators in activated T cells is unknown. Here, we identified autocrine VEGF-B as a metabolic regulator to control lipid synthesis and maintain the integrity of the mitochondrial inner membrane for the survival of activated T cells. Disruption of autocrine VEGF-B signaling in T cells reduced cardiolipin mass, resulting in mitochondrial damage, with increased apoptosis and reduced memory development. The addition of cardiolipin or modulating VEGF-B signaling improved T cell mitochondrial fitness and survival. Autocrine VEGF-B signaling through GA-binding protein [alpha] (GABP[alpha]) induced sentrin/SUMO-specific protease 2 (SENP2) expression, which further de-SUMOylated PPAR[gamma] and enhanced phospholipid synthesis, leading to a cardiolipin increase in activated T cells. These data suggest that autocrine VEGF-B mediates a signal to coordinate lipid synthesis and mitochondrial fitness with T cell activation for survival and immune response. 216. Scalable Private Decision Tree Evaluation with Sublinear Communication

Abstract

Private decision tree evaluation (PDTE) allows a decision tree holder to run a secure protocol with a feature provider. By running the protocol, the feature provider will learn a classification result. Nothing more is revealed to either party. In most existing PDTE protocols, the required communication grows exponentially with the tree's depth $d$, which is highly inefficient for large trees. This shortcoming motivated us to design a sublinear PDTE protocol with $O(d)$ communication complexity. The core of our construction is a shared oblivious selection (SOS) functionality, allowing two parties to perform a secret-shared oblivious read operation from an array. We provide two SOS protocols, both of which achieve sublinear communication and propose optimizations to further improve their efficiency. Our sublinear PDTE protocol is based on the proposed SOS functionality and we prove its security under a semi-honest adversary. We compare our protocol with the state-of-the-art, in terms of communication and computation, under various network settings. The performance evaluation shows that our protocol is practical and more scalable over large trees than existing solutions.

Abstract

Endogenous metabolic pathways in microbial cells are usually precisely controlled by sophisticated regulation networks. However, the lack of such regulations when introducing heterologous pathways in microbial hosts often causes unbalanced enzyme expression and carbon flux distribution, hindering the construction of highly efficient microbial biosynthesis systems. Here, using naringenin as the target compound, we developed an Autonomous Cascaded Artificial Dynamic (AutoCAD) regulation system to automatically coordinate the pathway expression and redirect carbon fluxes for enhanced naringenin production. The AutoCAD regulation system, consisting of both intermediate-based feedforward and product-based feedback control genetic circuits, resulted in a 16.5-fold increase in naringenin titer compared with the static control. Fed-batch fermentation using the strain with AutoCAD regulation further enhanced the naringenin titer to 277.2 mg/L. The AutoCAD regulation system, with intermediate-based feedforward control and product-triggered feedback control, provides a new paradigm of developing complicated cascade dynamic control to engineer heterologous pathways.

Abstract

Cathode surface coatings present one of the most popular and effective solutions to suppress cathode degradation and improve cycling performance of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). In this work, we carry out an extensive high-throughput computational study to develop materials design principles governing amorphous cathode coating selections for LIBs. Our high-throughput screening includes descriptors to evaluate the thermodynamic stability, electrochemical stability, chemical reactivity with electrolytes and cathodes, and ionic diffusion of the cathode coatings. In the ionic diffusion analysis, we mainly focus on Li-containing compounds. From the 20 selected materials, we highlight the formidable challenge of mitigating oxygen diffusion when selecting an ideal cathode coating, and suggest 7 promising coating candidates: Li3B11O18, LiZr2(PO4)3, LiB3O5, LiPO3, LiSb3O8, LiAlSiO4 and LiTaSiO5. Combining the screening results and detailed ionic diffusion analysis of the selected cathode coatings, we summarize the general selection guidelines of amorphous cathode coatings for LIBs.
