Abstract

Collisions between prolate uranium nuclei are used to study how particle production and azimuthal anisotropies depend on initial geometry in heavy-ion collisions. We report the two- and four-particle cumulants, $v_2\{2\}$ and $v_2\{4\}$, for charged hadrons from U+U collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 193 GeV and Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 200 GeV. Nearly fully overlapping collisions are selected based on the amount of energy deposited by spectators in the STAR Zero Degree Calorimeters (ZDCs). Within this sample, the observed dependence of $v_2\{2\}$ on multiplicity demonstrates that ZDC information combined with multiplicity can preferentially select different overlap configurations in U+U collisions. An initial-state model with gluon saturation describes the slope of $v_2\{2\}$ as a function of multiplicity in central collisions better than one based on Glauber with a two-component multiplicity model., Comment: Final paper version accepted for publication in Phys. Abstract

We present measurements of $\pi^-$ and $\pi^+$ elliptic flow, $v_2$, at midrapidity in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}} =$ 200, 62.4, 39, 27, 19.6, 11.5 and 7.7 GeV, as a function of event-by-event charge asymmetry, $A_{ch}$, based on data from the STAR experiment at RHIC. We find that $\pi^-$ ($\pi^+$) elliptic flow linearly increases (decreases) with charge asymmetry for most centrality bins at $\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}} = \text{27 GeV}$ and higher. At $\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}} = \text{200 GeV}$, the slope of the difference of $v_2$ between $\pi^-$ and $\pi^+$ as a function of $A_{ch}$ exhibits a centrality dependence, which is qualitatively similar to calculations that incorporate a chiral magnetic wave effect. Abstract

We report on measurements of dielectron ($e^+e^-$) production in Au$+$Au collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 200 GeV per nucleon-nucleon pair using the STAR detector at RHIC. Systematic measurements of the dielectron yield as a function of transverse momentum ($p_{\rm T}$) and collision centrality show an enhancement compared to a cocktail simulation of hadronic sources in the low invariant-mass region ($M_{ee}<$ 1 GeV/$c^2$). This enhancement cannot be reproduced by the $\rho$-meson vacuum spectral function. In minimum-bias collisions, in the invariant-mass range of 0.30 $-$ 0.76 GeV/$c^2$, integrated over the full $p_{\rm T}$ acceptance, the enhancement factor is 1.76 $\pm$ 0.06 (stat.) $\pm$ 0.26 (sys.) $\pm$ 0.29 (cocktail). The enhancement factor exhibits weak centrality and $p_{\rm T}$ dependence in STAR's accessible kinematic regions, while the excess yield in this invariant-mass region as a function of the number of participating nucleons follows a power-law shape with a power of 1.44 $\pm$ 0.10. Models that assume an in-medium broadening of the $\rho$ meson spectral function consistently describe the observed excess in these measurements. Additionally, we report on measurements of $\omega$ and $\phi$-meson production through their $e^+e^-$ decay channel. These measurements show good agreement with Tsallis Blast-Wave model predictions as well as, in the case of the $\phi$-meson, results through its $K^+K^-$ decay channel. Abstract

We report the observation of transverse polarization-dependent azimuthal correlations in charged pion pair production with the STAR experiment in $p^\uparrow+p$ collisions at RHIC. These correlations directly probe quark transversity distributions. We measure signals in excess of five standard deviations at high transverse momenta, at high pseudorapidities eta>0.5, and for pair masses around the mass of the rho-meson. This is the first direct transversity measurement in p+p collisions. Comparing the results to data from lepton-nucleon scattering will test the universality of these spin-dependent quantities., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, 15 tables. Submitted to PRL

Abstract

We report the measurement of the leptonic ($e^{+}e^{-}$) decay channel of the $\phi$(1020) meson in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$ = 200 GeV by the STAR experiment. The transverse momentum ($p_{\rm T}$) spectrum is measured for 0.1 $\le p_{\rm T} \le 2.5$ GeV/$c$ at mid-rapidity ($|y|\le1$). We obtain the $p_{\rm T}$-integrated $\phi$(1020) mass $M_{\phi}=1017.7\pm0.8 (\rm {stat.}) \pm0.9 (\rm {sys.})$ MeV/$c^{2}$ and width $\Gamma_{\phi} = 8.0\pm 2.5(\rm {stat.}) \pm 2.3(\rm {sys.}) \textrm{MeV/}c^{2}$, which are within 1.5\,$\sigma$ and 1.1\,$\sigma$ of the vacuum values, respectively. No significant difference is observed in the measured $p_{\rm T}$ spectrum, $dN/dy$, or $\left$ of the $\phi$(1020) meson between the $e^{+}e^{-}$ and hadronic ($K^{+}K^{-}$) decay channels as measured by the same experiment. The experimental results are compared to a theoretical model including medium-modified $\phi$(1020).

Abstract

Dihadron angular correlations in $d$+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=200$ GeV are reported as a function of the measured zero-degree calorimeter neutral energy and the forward charged hadron multiplicity in the Au-beam direction. A finite correlated yield is observed at large relative pseudorapidity ($\Delta\eta$) on the near side (i.e. relative azimuth $\Delta\phi\sim0$). This correlated yield as a function of $\Delta\eta$ appears to scale with the dominant, primarily jet-related, away-side ($\Delta\phi\sim\pi$) yield. The Fourier coefficients of the $\Delta\phi$ correlation, $V_{n}=\langle\cos n\Delta\phi\rangle$, have a strong $\Delta\eta$ dependence. In addition, it is found that $V_{1}$ is approximately inversely proportional to the mid-rapidity event multiplicity, while $V_{2}$ is independent of it with similar magnitude in the forward ($d$-going) and backward (Au-going) directions., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

The acceptance-corrected dielectron excess mass spectra, where the known hadronic sources have been subtracted from the inclusive dielectron mass spectra, are reported for the first time at mid-rapidity $|y_{ee}|<1$ in minimum-bias Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 19.6 and 200 GeV. The excess mass spectra are consistently described by a model calculation with a broadened $\rho$ spectral function for $M_{ee}<1.1$ GeV/$c^{2}$. A girl with HIES carrying a novel STAT3 mutation who had no obvious apparent symptoms but presented with a severe necrotizing pulmonary infection is described here. We analysed dynamic changes in blood cells and a series of inflammatory factors in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) before and after each bronchoscopic lavage to relieve her severe pulmonary abscess.Patients and Methods: Whole-exome sequencing and Sanger sequencing were used to identify novel STAT3 mutations. Flow cytometry was used for immune analysis of Th17 cells and inflammatory cytokines.Results: A novel de novo mutation in STAT3 (c.1552C>T, p.Arg518*) was identified in this patient. The number of eosinophils decreased after each bronchoscopy procedure. Elevated interleukin (IL)-8 and IL-1β levels were detected in her right lung BALF in the acute phase, but they were reduced after four bronchoscopic lavage procedures and the administration of antimicrobial medicine.Conclusion: More information on STAT3 mutations is needed to investigate the relationship between the genotype and HIES phenotype. However, their functions in renal cell carcinoma (RCC) are not completely understood. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of the regulators in RCC.Materials and Methods: The expression levels of the 13 main m6A RNA methylation regulators in RCC were detected and consensus clustering was performed to explore their relationships with RCC. Thereafter, a risk signature based on the regulators was established. This risk model was fully verified by conducting prognostic analyses using two datasets (The Cancer Genome Atlas [TCGA] and Gene Expression Omnibus [GEO] datasets) and a ROC curve analysis.Results: Of the 13 main m6A regulators, six were significantly upregulated and four were significantly downregulated in 893 RCC cases compared to 128 normal controls in the TCGA database. Consensus clustering based on the regulators identified two clusters of RCC cases, which were significantly associated with a pathological characteristic (T status). Thus, these results indicated that m6A RNA methylation regulators were associated with RCC. Thereafter, a risk model involving two of the regulators (METTL14 and WTAP) was established. The alterations in the mRNA and protein expression levels of these two regulators were further confirmed based on Human Protein Atlas data and real-time PCR in RCC and normal cell lines. The results indicated that the risk model may serve as an independent prognostic marker of overall survival, and it was also associated with clinicopathological characteristics (T status, M status, pathological stage, and gender) in RCC.Conclusion: Collectively, the results of this study indicated that the risk model (based on two m6A RNA methylation regulators) may serve as an independent prognostic indicator of RCC, which may aid further investigation into m6A RNA modification in RCC.Keywords: renal cell carcinoma, m6A methylation, TCGA, prognostic signature

Abstract

The STAR collaboration presents for the first time two-dimensional di-hadron correlations with identified leading hadrons in 200 GeV central Au+Au and minimum-bias d+Au collisions to explore hadronization mechanisms in the quark gluon plasma. The enhancement of the jet-like yield for leading pions in Au+Au data with respect to the d+Au reference and the absence of such an enhancement for leading non-pions (protons and kaons) are discussed within the context of a quark recombination scenario. The correlated yield at large angles, specifically in the \emph{ridge region}, is found to be significantly higher for leading non-pions than pions. The consistencies of the constituent quark scaling, azimuthal harmonic model and a mini-jet modification model description of the data are tested, providing further constraints on hadronization.

211. In Situ Observations of Magnetic Reconnection Caused by the Interactions of Two Dipolarization Fronts.

Abstract

Using high‐resolution data from the Magnetospheric Multiscale mission, an electron‐only reconnection current sheet is found between two successive dipolarization fronts (DFs). The electron‐only reconnection occurs between the northward component of the magnetic field of the flux pileup region (FPR) of the first DF (DF1) and the southward component of the magnetic dip of the second DF (DF2). The faster DF2 compresses the FPR of DF1, which constitutes an anti‐parallel topology and reduces the thickness of the current sheet. Further analysis shows that the current sheet is unstable to the electron tearing instability, which may power the onset of the reconnection. Our results suggest that these two DFs may merge into one by the reconnection, which sheds light on the evolution of DFs during their earthward propagation. Plain Language Summary: Magnetic reconnection, releasing magnetic energy and energizing plasmas, are believed to be responsible for the explosive phenomena in space. Though reconnection has been investigated for decades, the onset of reconnection is elusive. Dipolarization fronts (DFs), important carriers in the transportation of mass, magnetic flux, and energy in the magnetotail, can be generated by reconnections and will integrate into the geomagnetic field at last. The generation of DFs and dynamics at DFs are thoroughly probed by simulations and observations. However, the evolution of DFs during their earthward propagation is rarely inspected. In this work, we present an observation of an electron‐only reconnection between two successive DFs. The latter DF compresses the former DF and reduces the thickness of the current sheet between them. Inside the reconnection current sheet, electron tearing instability is unstable, which may power the reconnection. By reconnection, these two DFs may merge. Abstract

Identifying how different wave modes interaction with each other is an important topic in space physics. Using measurements from the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission, we report an event in the Earth's magnetosheath where ultra‐low‐frequency (ULF) waves, whistler waves, and quasi‐electrostatic whistler harmonics were observed simultaneously. Specifically, our analyses show that the parallel components of ULF waves modulate the electron butterfly distributions which provide the free energy to the excitation of the observed whistler waves. Meanwhile, quasi‐electrostatic waves sharing frequencies that are nearly integral multiples of the frequency of the observed whistlers are identified as nonlinear harmonics of whistler waves. The close correlations between the whistler waves and the electric field harmonics, as well as the high bicoherence indexes within the frequency ranges of the whistlers and harmonics, suggest the significant nonlinear couplings between the whistler waves and quasi‐electrostatic whistler harmonics. Our work provides new insights to the interactions between waves at different frequency bands. 213. Effect of flipped venous catheter combined with spinal cord electrical stimulation on functional recovery in patients with sciatic nerve injury.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the effect of flipped venous catheters combined with spinal cord electrical stimulation on functional recovery in patients with sciatic nerve injury. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 160 patients with hip dislocation and sciatic nerve injury were divided into conventional release and flipped catheter + electrical stimulation groups according to the treatment methods (n=80). Motor nerve conduction velocity (MCV) and lower limb motor function were compared. Serum neurotrophic factors brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and nerve growth factor (NGF) were compared. The frequency of complications and quality of life were also compared. RESULTS: The MCV levels of the common peroneal nerve and tibial nerve in the flipped catheter + electrical stimulation group were greater than the conventional lysis group (p<0.05). After treatment, the lower extremity motor score (LMEs) in the flipped catheter + electrical stimulation group was greater than the conventional lysis group (p<0.05). The serum levels of BDNF and NGF in the flip catheter + electrical stimulation group were higher than the conventional lysis group (p<0.05). The complication rate in the flipped catheter + electrical stimulation group was lower than in the conventional release group (6.25% vs. 16.25%, p<0.05). The quality-of-life score in the flip catheter + electrical stimulation group was greater than the conventional lysis group (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The flipped venous catheter combined with spinal cord electrical stimulation can improve nerve conduction velocity, lower limb motor function, serum BDNF and NGF levels, reduce complications, and help improve the quality of life of sufferers with sciatic nerve injury. Abstract

Heavy particles are extensively detected in the space environment, especially in the solar wind and interplanetary magnetosphere. Various physical processes can be affected by the physical dynamics of heavy particles. One of the processes is magnetic reconnection, which converts the energy from the magnetic field to the particles. In the present study, we investigate the impact of heavy particles with increasing mass (i.e., mass-loading effect) on energy conversion rate during magnetic reconnection. The declined reconnection rate and energy conversion rates by this effect are captured as reported previously. After considering three major regions in reconnection, it reveals that the mass-loading effect decreases more energy conversion rate of positive species at the separatrix, affects the heavier species less in the inner electron diffusion region (EDR), and propels the formation of a non-zero electric field at reconnection front (RF). However, the expression and clinical significance of KIFs in triple-negative breast cancer remain unclear.Methods: In this study, the role of KIF15, including gene expression analysis, methylation characteristic, CNV characteristic, and miRNA target regulation, was evaluated using multiple bioinformatic tools based on TCGA database. Quantitative real-time PCR and Western blot were used to determine the expression level of KIF15 in triple-negative breast cancer cell lines. Then, functional experiments were employed to explore the effects of KIF15 on tumor growth and metastasis in triple-negative breast cancer.Results: Our data showed that KIF15 was significantly upregulated in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). Functionally, downregulation of KIF15 significantly facilitated apoptosis and G2/M phase arrest, and inhibited the migration and invasion of TNBC cells. The mechanism of action of KIF15 was closely related to DNA replication checkpoint and cell cycle regulation in TNBC based on GSEA. In addition, bioinformatics analysis demonstrated that high expression of KIF15 in TNBC was correlated with copy number aberration and DNA methylation levels.Conclusion: Our findings suggest that KIF15 is a novel oncogene in TNBC and provide us a strong evidence that it might be served as a potential clinical target and biomarker in triple-negative breast cancer.Keywords: kinesin family proteins, bioinformatics analysis, biomarker, triple-negative breast cancer

Abstract

A semantic network analysis was conducted to investigate how national political culture shapes news frames for international political coverage. Specifically, the Associated Press framed the Arab Spring as a process of pursuing democracy, a core value of American political culture, whereas Xinhua News Agency framed it as a crisis that challenged authority and the related stability, the central concerns of Chinese political culture. The results of the analysis of coevolution of cultural symbols indicate that competition between the two different cultural frames happened with the purpose of negotiating the meaning of the Arab Spring on the global stage.

Abstract

The water Cherenkov detector array (WCDA) for the large high altitude air shower observatory(LHAASO) will employ more than 3600 hemisphere 8 inch photomultiplier tubes (PMT). The good time performance of PMT, especially the transit time spread (TTS), is required for WCDA. TTS is usually defined as the TTS of single photoelectron, and usually determined by using single photoelectron counting technique. A method using the photoelectron spectrum is researched for the measurement of TTS. The method is appropriate for multi-photoelectrons and makes it possible to measure the TTS of different photoelectrons at the same time. The TTS of different photoelectrons is measured for Hamamatsu R5912 with the divider circuit designed in specifically. The TTS of single photoelectron is determined to 3.3 ns and satisfies the requirement of WCDA., Comment: 5 pages, 13 figures

Abstract

We present measurements of elliptic flow ($v_2$) of electrons from the decays of heavy-flavor hadrons ($e_{HF}$) by the STAR experiment. For Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = $ 200 GeV we report $v_2$, for transverse momentum ($p_T$) between 0.2 and 7 GeV/c using three methods: the event plane method ($v_{2}${EP}), two-particle correlations ($v_2${2}), and four-particle correlations ($v_2${4}). For Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 62.4 and 39 GeV we report $v_2${2} for $p_T< 2$ GeV/c. $v_2${2} and $v_2${4} are non-zero at low and intermediate $p_T$ at 200 GeV, and $v_2${2} is consistent with zero at low $p_T$ at other energies. The $v_2${2} at the two lower beam energies is systematically lower than at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = $ 200 GeV for $p_T < 1$ GeV/c. This difference may suggest that charm quarks interact less strongly with the surrounding nuclear matter at those two lower energies compared to $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 200$ GeV., Comment: Version accepted by PRC

Our previous studies showed that lots of miRNAs and mRNA expressed differentially in GC and normal tissues. However, the critical miRNAs and mRNA need to be clarified.Materials and Methods: Microarray sequencing was used to profile the differential expression of miRNAs and mRNA in GC and normal tissues. Bioinformatics analysis and database prediction were used to search the critical miRNAs and mRNA. Real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR), luciferase reporter assay, immunohistochemistry (IHC), wound healing assay and transwell assay were used to clarify the relationship between the target miRNAs and mRNA. Statistical analysis was used to seek their value of diagnosis and prognosis.Results: We identified microRNA-6165 (miR-6165) as a novel cancer-related miRNA in GC through high-throughput microarray sequencing. By bioinformatics analysis and luciferase reporter assay, we found STRN4 was the target of miR-6165. Via a series of cell experiments, we determined that miR-6165 suppressed GC cells migration and invasion by targeting STRN4. Also, we discovered the potential diagnosis and prognosis value of miR-6165 and STRN4.Conclusion: It was found that miR-6165 might suppress GC migration and invasion by targeting STRN4 in vitro, and the further research should focus more on the potential diagnosis and prognosis value of miR-6165 and STRN4 in gastric cancer patients.Keywords: gastric cancer, miR-6165, STRN4, migration and invasion

Novel non-invasive biomarkers for the prediction of LNM in PTC patients are still urgently needed. In this study, the relationship between the expression of plasma exosomal microRNAs (miRNAs) and LNM was analyzed. Further, we aimed to explore if exosomal miRNAs can serve as indicators of LNM in PTC patients.Methods: A total of 64 PTC patients who underwent total thyroidectomy and neck dissection from June 2018 to July 2018 in West China Hospital were enrolled in this study. Plasma exosomes were isolated by exoRNeasy Serum/Plasma Maxi Kit. The levels of selected exosomal miRNAs were detected by real-time quantitative PCR (qRT-PCR). Cox proportional hazard analyses and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were conducted to evaluate the predictive efficiency. Furthermore, PTC cell lines with transfection of miRNA mimics/inhibitors were used to verify the functions of exosomal miRNAs.Results: 49 PTC patients with LNM and 15 without LNM were included in the present study. Exosomal miR-146b-5p and miR-222-3p were both significantly upregulated in patients with LNM (P values were 0.008 and 0.015, respectively). ROC analyses revealed that the areas under the curves (AUCs) of miR-146b-5p and miR-222-3p for LNM prediction were 0.811 and 0.834, respectively. Moreover, the AUC increased to 0.895 when the two miRNAs used together. Wound healing assays and transwell assays showed that miR-146b-5p and miR-222-3p significantly enhanced the migration and invasion ability of PTC cells in vitro.Conclusion: Plasma exosomal miR-146b-5p and miR-222-3p could serve as potential biomarkers for LNM in PTC.Keywords: papillary thyroid cancer, lymph node metastasis, exosomal miRNAs, biomarkers

However, p-type AO with reliable electrical properties are very difficult to obtain according to the literature. Based on the oxide thin film transistor, a phenomenon that could change an n-type material into a p-type semiconductor is proposed and explained here. The typical In-Ga-Zn-O material has been reported to be an n-type semiconductor, which can be changed by physical conditions, such as in processing or bias. Our objective was to compare the sleep quality between SHYPO patients and a control group with normal thyroid function.Methods: A total of 2224 patients with SHYPO and 12,622 euthyroid (EUTH) control group patients were included in the present study. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used to assess sleep quality. The sleep outcomes were compared to explore the association between SHYPO and sleep quality. Furthermore, we tried to identify the risk factors of poor sleep in SHYPO patients.Results: Compared to the EUTH control patients, SHYPO patients had a higher PSQI score (6.83 ± 2.67 vs 6.64 ± 2.63, p =0.004) and a higher proportion of poor sleepers (67.09% vs 64.75%, p =0.033). Moreover, subjects with SHYPO were associated with poorer sleep (Odd Ratio (OR) 1.120, 95% Confidence Intervals (CI) 1.016 to 1.235, p =0.023), longer sleep latency (OR 1.162, 95% CI 1.053 to 1.282, p =0.003), and shorter sleep duration (OR 1.148, 95% CI 1.019 to 1.293, p =0.023) after adjusting for potential confounders. Furthermore, we found that lower age, lower body mass index, and women were risk factors for poor sleep quality in SHYPO patients.Conclusion: Our findings suggest a relationship between SHYPO and poor sleep quality in a large Chinese population.Keywords: subclinical hypothyroidism, sleep quality, PSQI

In the literature, the threshold voltage of TFTs decreases with increasing temperature. Here, the threshold voltage increased at higher temperatures, which is different from previously reported results and was repeated on different samples.Methods: Electrical experiments (such as I-V measurements and photoelectron spectrometer experiments) were performed in order to explain such behavior. Double sweeping gate voltage measurements were performed to investigate the mechanism for the temperature dependent behavior.Results: It was found that there was a change of trap charge under thermal stress, which was released after the stress.Conclusion: Non-Arrhenius behaviors (including a linear behavior) were obtained for the amorphous nano oxide thin-film transistors within 303∼425 K, suggesting their potential to be adjusted by measurement processes and be applied as temperature sensors for numerous medical applications.Keywords: thin film transistors, TFTs, temperature, amorphous nano oxide semiconductors, AOS, body temperature sensors, medical applications

239. Using coherencies to examine network evolution and co-evolution

Abstract

This paper explores the use of spectral or frequency domain analysis to examine network evolution and co-evolution. Given a sufficient number of measurements of a valued network over-time, a matrix (Κ) may be created, where κij is the squared coherency between nodes i and j. Since Κ is a matrix of relations, it may be analyzed like any other network to determine which nodes co-evolve, and which change independently. To illustrate this approach, cross-spectral analyses were conducted among 250 pairs of nation-states based on terrorism news coverage (2000–2012) to create matrix Κ. Then, a network analysis was conducted. The results indicate that the United States was the most central country, and that the nations co-evolved in two large groups (the Middle East and East Asia), and numerous smaller ones. The proposed method is extended to include exogenous variables (terrorist events and oil prices) and to two or more networks to examine network co-evolution. The method’s application to network co-evolution is demonstrated with additional data on networks of co-association in terrorism news coverage (2011–2013) and a comparable data set on the coverage of the Arab Spring (2011–2013).

247. Observations of Energy Conversion Caused by Magnetic Reconnection at a Dipolarization Front.

Abstract

Dipolarization fronts (DFs) are widely believed to host energy conversion processes. However, which mechanism is responsible for the energy conversion is still obscure. Using data from the Magnetospheric Multiscale mission, a current sheet is observed at a DF. This current sheet is caused by interchange instability bending the edge of the DF. Inside the current sheet, Hall electromagnetic field, super Alfvénic electron jets, demagnetization of ions and electrons, strong energy conversion, and steady ion flow and temperature are observed, indicating an electron‐only reconnection at the DF. The duskward plasma flow, which may be deflected by the DF, compresses the bent edges of the DF. As a result, the width of the current sheet between two adjacent bent edges of the DF reduces, and then reconnection begins. Our observations give direct evidence that magnetic reconnection results in energy conversion at a DF. Plain Language Summary: Magnetic reconnection is an explosive phenomenon in space, which can rapidly convert energy from magnetic field to particles. Dipolarization fronts are essential carriers of mass and energy from the magnetotail to the Earth. Strong energy conversion, considered to be even more significant than magnetic reconnection, is usually observed at dipolarization fronts. However, the specific mechanism responsible for the energy conversion at a dipolarization front is elusive. Using data from the Magnetospheric Multiscale mission, we present direct evidence of magnetic reconnection at a dipolarization front, leading to strong energy conversion. The reconnection occurs in the current sheet at the dipolarization front. The duskward diverted flow compresses the bent dipolarization front induced by interchange instability, resulting in reconnection. Abstract

Branched flow is a universal phenomenon in which treebranch-like filaments form through traveling waves or particle flows in irregular mediums. Branched flow of high-current relativistic electron beams (REBs) in porous materials has been recently discovered [Jiang et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 130, 185001 (2023)]. REB branching is accompanied by extreme beam focusing, up to a hundred times the initial value, at predictable caustic locations. The energy coupling efficiency between the beam and porous material surpasses that in homogeneous targets by two orders of magnitude. This paper examines REB branching, focusing on how beam parameters (e.g., Lorentz factor and density) and characteristics of the porous materials (e.g., pore size, skeleton thickness, and density) influence branching patterns. Analyses of the dynamics of individual beam electrons are also provided. The findings pave the way for further understanding REB branching and its potential applications in the future. Abstract

In this paper, a variant of the improved discrete velocity method (VIDVM) is proposed for flows in the whole Knudsen number regimes. This method retains the advantage of the improved discrete velocity method (IDVM), which calculates numerical fluxes through a self-adaptive strategy by combining the microscopic reconstruction and the macroscopic reconstruction. Like the IDVM, the microscopic reconstruction for VIDVM is also based on the collisionless Boltzmann solver. However, different from IDVM, the macroscopic reconstruction for VIDVM is established on the Euler solver instead of the Navier–Stokes solver. Considering that the Euler solver merely computes the inviscid fluxes while the Navier–Stokes solver additionally calculates the viscous fluxes, the present method could be more efficient than IDVM. To validate the accuracy and efficiency of the present scheme, some benchmark cases from the continuum regime to the free molecular regime are conducted. Results reveal that the present scheme can predict the flow as well as IDVM, but the present solver is more efficient than IDVM. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
