Abstract

This study investigated whether people are motivated for control and considered both the dispositional and situational factors that affect this motivation. Thirty male and 30 female undergraduates, divided equally among individuals with obsessive-compulsive, depressive, and normal personality styles, were given different levels of information about how to exercise control in an effective manner. Motivation for control was assessed by performance on a task in which the level of performance determined whether a subject obtained control over an outcome. In addition, feelings of self-efficacy were measured. The hypothesis that people are motivated to have personal control was confirmed. Furthermore, this motivation for control could not be accounted for by the variance attributable to feelings of self-efficacy, that is, the expectancy of gaining a good outcome by having personal control. Although feelings of self-efficacy were influenced by the level of information provided to subjects, for most subjects, the motivation for control, per se, was not affected. In contrast, obsessive-compulsive males seemed to respond differently to the information manipulation from other subjects, being motivated for control only when a higher level of information was provided. The effects of depressive and obsessive-compulsive personality styles on the motivation for control were reconsidered.

Abstract

The problem of the penny-shaped crack imbedded into an infinite body of an incompressible power-law isotropic material subjected to remote shear stress is addressed in two ways. First, we conduct a detailed numerical analysis using the finite element program ABAQUS. This analysis provides accurate estimates of the discontinuity in the sliding displacements across the crack, and the crack front distribution of the J- integral . A perturbation analysis, proposed earlier in the literature for the corresponding axisymmetric problem, is chosen as an attempt to obtain explicit formulae for the numerical results. Unfortunately, a comparison of the two approaches is not encouraging.

Abstract

Ten young adult miniature swine from a line reported to be genetically selected for glucose intolerance and eight normal controls were obtained from Colorado State University. They were consecutively exposed to 4 mo of a high-fiber, low-fat standard swine diet; 4 mo of a high-sucrose, high-fat, low-fiber diabetogenic diet; and 4 mo of excess diabetogenic diet for obesification. Results of oral glucose tolerance and intravenous insulin tolerance tests conducted at the end of each regimen were compared. Hyperglycemia was not observed in any animals after any manipulation. Insulin sensitivity was also not influenced by diet. We conclude that F7 low-K miniature swine from this colony fail to model human non-insulin-dependent diabetes.

Abstract

The paper reviews studies considering whether hyperinsulinemia, and its resultant effects on adipose tissue mass, can alter perceived hunger, taste, and food consumption. It also describes work addressing the reciprocal question of whether cues associated with food can affect insulin response. Specifically, four general categories of studies are presented. First, studies considering the causes and physiological consequences of chronic hyperinsulinemia are reviewed. Second, work investigating environmental and cognitive influences on insulin secretion are described. These show that high acute levels of insulin can be produced by simply seeing and thinking about food and that individuals showing this response show a greater tendency toward weight gain in a food-abundant environment. Third, studies are covered in which direct manipulations of insulin level, controlling for blood glucose, are performed. These experiments show that elevations in insulin produce increased hunger, heightened perceived pleasantness of sweet taste, and increased food intake. Finally, a study is described that considers how different insulin levels, produced by the type of food ingested, may affect subsequent food intake. Together, these studies show that "overeating" is caused by a complex feedback system of environmental, behavioral, and biological factors.

Summary The failure of earlier studies to find much evidence for differential accuracy may have been due to the methodology employed. Two modifications of the standard methodology were introduced in the present experiments: (a) the judges self-selected the information on which their judgments were based, and (b) the objective value of the information was specified. Groups of judges selected information with and without behavioral context, and received it with and without behavioral context. All groups achieved significantly greater differential accuracy than the control group. Although judges varied widely in their information preferences, the more accurate judges did not choose objectively better information. Behavioral context significantly increased accuracy only when provided during the information selection process. Even though we acquire more negative information about people as we get to know them better and negative information has a disproportionately high weight, our liking for a friend does not automatically diminish with continued acquaintance. It is difficult to reconcile this fact with the commonly held assumption that liking-disliking is a unidimensional judgment. An alternative view is proposed in which liking and disliking are seen as separate judgments. The several premises are: 1) the criteria for liking and disliking are distinct; 2) friendship choices are made from a set of eligibles; 3) people are rejected from the set of eligibles on the basis of dislike criteria; 4) friends are chosen from the set of eligibles on the basis of like criteria; 5) the like criteria are likely to be context specific. Analysis of dislike judgments suggests a differentiation of negative information into disliked and disfavored attributes. Given this distinction, the fact of nondiminishing friendship poses no difficulty. The analysis of liking judgments suggests no substantive additions to what is already known about like criteria. It does, however, point up a nontrivial methodological problem with traditional measures of liking--a difficulty associated with the failure to take the context specificity of like criteria into account.

Abstract

The effect of controllability of stigma on the attribution of prejudice was investigated in a series of five experiments. In prior prejudice attribution research, the stigma that made the victim subject to discrimination was a characteristic beyond the individual's control, such as age or race. In the present research, controllability of the stigma was systematically varied. Subjects read scenarios in which persons with flaws of speech or appearance were subject to discriminatory behaviors of derogation, exclusion, or unfair treatment. The flaws were either within or beyond the control of the individual possessing them. More prejudice was attributed to those who behaved in a discriminatory way toward persons whose flaws were beyond their control. The theoretical explanation offered for the outcome is that discrimination can be thought of as form of harmdoing, and prejudice attribution as a form of blame attribution.

People respond differently to individuals they label as prejudiced. It is not clear whether prejudice is attributed to individuals who believe that two groups are unequal, or only to those whose belief in inequality is factually unjustified. The present studies disentangle the effect of these two aspects of belief. In the first experiment, from information on both an individual's belief (a particular hypothetical group is better, same, or worse) and objective reality (the group is in fact better or worse), 180 subjects rated the belief on a 7-point scale ranging from ”strongly prejudiced in favor of ”to” strongly prejudiced against.” Group consensus on the individual's belief was included as a control variable. Cues for cognitive disregard are those attributes of strangers that signify their lack of interest for us. Disregarded strangers are not noticed beyond category level; their invisibility is shown by our failure to recognize them as familiar in a subsequent encounter. Five experiments were conducted. Experiment 1 established the operation of disregard in a lab setting with the finding that subjects had better recall for (photos of) persons with natural relevance to their lives than for other photos to which their attention had been especially directed. In Experiment 2, which compared the recall of undergraduate-aged and elderly subjects for persons of varying ages, it was found that age discrepancy acted as a disregard cue, although youthfulness per se enhanced memorability. Abstract

The study considered whether external responsiveness in normal weight people would predict changes in eating behavior and weight following major alteration of environmetnal food cues. Normal weight children were tested for externality on measures of eating, slide recall, and extremity of affective responsiveness during the first week of a summer camp, and were weighed biweekly thereafter. There was a significant correlation between externality and weight change, indicating that the more externally responsive the children were, the more weight they gained. The implications of this finding for theories about the development of obesity were considered.

Abstract

The photovoltaic effect in some crystals without a center of symmetry (ZnO, α-HgS, and α-quartz) is investigated. It is shown that the impurity centers of different nature give a different contribution to the photovoltaic effect. The influence of the optical recharging of the impurity centers on the spectral distribution and on the kinetics of the photovoltaic effect is noted. The optical activity strongly influences the angular dependence of the photovoltaic current, observed in the linearly polarized light.

Investigated client self-disclosure and client perception of counselors (as expressed in counselor evaluations) as a function of the sex, attractiveness and status of the counselor, and the sex of the client. Counselor gender and attractiveness were established by means of stimulus photographs; counselor status was defined in terms of education and experience. Ss (160 college students) first rated their counselors on intelligence and empathy; they then completed Jourard's Self-Disclosure Questionnaire while role-playing clients in therapy. A four-factor between-Ss analysis of disclosure scores revealed that clients disclosed more of themselves to male than to female counselors when the counselors were high in either status or attractiveness. Results supported the hypothesis that the effect of counselor gender on client disclosure depends on an interaction of counselor gender with other counselor variables.

A single form of consistency relations between generalized forces and displacements for systems exhibiting power-law behavior is presented. The later discussion focuses on certain details regarding applications of the relations to nonlinear fracture mechanics, emphasizing the finite element analysis of a single edge-cracked strip subjected to remote tension under plane strain conditions. Within the last decade there has been observed a serious computational effort towards obtaining numerical solutions to problems of nonlinear fracture mechanics. The handbook formatted reference gives extensive tabulations of important parameters for various configurations, loadings and material behaviors, which makes it useful for engineering analysis, and a review of prior work in the field permits its use it as a good starting point for further research.

Constitutive equations for a power-law incompressible isotropic matrix containing penny-shaped cracks are presented. Applications are directed to a description of polycrystalline materials which develop grain boundary facet cracks when subjected to load at elevated temperatures. The tensorial nature of such damage notwithstanding, the adoption of a framework for isotropic materials is central to the paper. The main goal of the work is to develop three-dimensional constitutive relations for this class of materials and microstructural damage which are both physically sound and straightforward to implement into a finite element program. Certain important features of the structure of such relations are emphasized. The paper is concluded by a numerical example within the context of the differential self-consistent scheme.

Abstract

The seed coats of Gnetum gnemon L., G. ula Brongn., G. montanum f. parvifolium (Warb.) Mgf. and G. neglectum Bl. consist of three layers. The outer layer or sarcotesta is mostly parenchyma but contains some sclereids and fibers and a series of simple vascular bundles. The middle sclerotesta forms masses of sclereids in varying shapes and numbers, sometimes extending as a basal plate, and is usually thicker near the micropylar tube. The second layer also contains a series of small vascular bundles that reach the apex. Depending on the species, the middle layer is sometimes nearly free from the outer layer, may be partially fused with it, or completely fused to it at maturity. The innermost layer of the seed coat constitutes the endotesta which is membranous and only rarely contains sclerenchyma. It possesses a dichotomous venation system with varying degrees of anastomosing, depending upon the species. The above species show qualitative and quantitative differences in their sclerenchyma and laticifers. Seed coat anatomy may be useful in the diagnosis of some species. The trends of evolution of seed coat structure within these four species of Gnetum are discussed, and a comparison of tissue layers and vasculature with certain fossil pteridosperms is made, especially in the Trigonocarpales.

Abstract

MATERIALS AND METHODS.-The material, collected in South-West Africa or grown in Berkeley, California, is the same as that used in the seedling study (Rodin, 1953b) and the same techniques have been applied. Approximately 24 seedlings were used in this investigation. Mature leaves and attached woody portions of the stem required considerable softening due to extensive fiber and sclereid development. Gifford's (1949) technique, using 20 ml. glacial acetic acid in 80 ml. 60 per cent ethyl alcohol, proved satisfactory on most imbedded tissues. For the more heavily sclerified tissues, the third schedule of Foster and Gifford (1947), a mixture of 10 ml. glycerine, 10 ml. hydrofluoric acid, and 80 ml. 95 per cent ethyl alcohol, was most helpful.
