In the era of the internet of things, there exists a pressing need for technologies that meet the stringent demands of wearable, self-powered, and seamlessly integrated devices. Current approaches to developing MXene-based electrochemical sensors involve either rigid or opaque components, limiting their use in niche applications. This study investigates the potential of pristine Ti 3 C 2 T x electrodes for flexible and transparent electrochemical sensing, achieved through an exploration of how material characteristics (flake size, flake orientation, film geometry, and uniformity) impact the electrochemical activity of the outer sphere redox probe ruthenium hexamine using cyclic voltammetry. The optimized electrode made of stacked large Ti 3 C 2 T x flakes demonstrated excellent reproducibility and resistance to bending conditions, suggesting their use for reliable, robust, and flexible sensors. Reducing electrode thickness resulted in an amplified faradaic-to-capacitance signal, which is advantageous for this application. This led to the deposition of transparent thin Ti 3 C 2 T x films, which maintained their best performance up to 73% transparency. These findings underscore its promise for high-performance, tailored sensors, marking a significant stride in advancing MXene utilization in next-generation electrochemical sensing technologies. The results encourage the analytical electrochemistry field to take advantage of the unique properties that pristine Ti 3 C 2 T x electrodes can provide in sensing through more parametric studies.

Tuneable infrared properties, such as transparency and emissivity, are highly desirable for a range of applications, including thermal windows and emissive cooling. Here, we demonstrate the use of carbon nanotube networks spray-deposited onto an ionic liquid-infused membrane to fabricate devices with electrochromic modulation in the mid-infrared spectrum, facilitating control of emissivity and apparent temperature. Such modulation is enabled by intraband transitions in unsorted single-walled carbon nanotube networks, allowing the use of scalable nanotube inks for printed devices. These devices are optimized by varying film thickness and sheet resistance, demonstrating the emissivity modulation (from ∼0.5 to ∼0.2). These devices and the understanding thereof open the door to selection criteria for infrared electrochromic materials based on the relationship between band structure, electrochemistry, and optothermal properties to enable the development of solution-processable large-area coatings for widespread thermal management applications.

This article is one in a series in which contributing authors discuss how the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are linked to everyday clinical issues; national public health emergencies; and other nursing issues, such as leadership, shared governance, and advocacy. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, a 15-year plan of action to achieve the goals, was unanimously adopted by all UN member states in September 2015 and took effect on January 1, 2016. The Agenda consists of 17 SDGs addressing social, economic, and environmental determinants of health and 169 associated targets focused on five themes: people, planet, peace, prosperity, and partnership. The SDGs build on the work of the UN Millennium Development Goals, which were in effect from 2000 to 2015. Background: In 2020, the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic forced the redesign of the International Council of Nurses' (ICN) Global Nursing Leadership Institute (GNLI) that heretofore had included an intensive, week-long residential experience in Geneva, Switzerland., Aim: This paper describes the development, implementation, challenges and preliminary outcomes of an approach that regionalized GNLI and delivered it online, while preserving some cross-regional connections among participants., Results: A virtual approach to a global policy leadership programme cannot replace the richness of an intensive, concentrated residential one, but the redesign of GNLI has given ICN, its member national nursing associations and individual nurse leaders previously unexplored opportunities for networking and collaboration aligned with the six WHO regions, and for cross-region networking and discussions of global issues., Conclusion and Implications for Nursing And/or Health Policy: The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has highlighted the need for nursing leadership in policy and practice. Burkholderia species have environmental, industrial and medical significance, and are important opportunistic pathogens in individuals with cystic fibrosis (CF). Using a combination of existing and newly determined genome sequences, this study investigated prophage carriage across the species B. vietnamiensis , and also isolated spontaneously inducible prophages from a reference strain, G4. Eighty-one B. vietnamiensis genomes were bioinformatically screened for prophages using PHASTER (Phage Search Tool Enhanced Release) and prophage regions were found to comprise up to 3.4% of total genetic material. Overall, 115 intact prophages were identified and there was evidence of polylysogeny in 32 strains. A novel, inducible Mu-like phage (vB_BvM-G4P1) was isolated from B. vietnamiensis G4 that had lytic activity against strains of five Burkholderia species prevalent in CF infections, including the Boston epidemic B. dolosa strain SLC6. The cognate prophage to vB_BvM-G4P1 was identified in the lysogen genome and was almost identical (>93.5% tblastx identity) to prophages found in 13 other B. vietnamiensis strains (17% of the strain collection). Phylogenomic analysis determined that the G4P1-like prophages were widely distributed across the population structure of B. vietnamiensis . This study highlights how genomic characterization of Burkholderia prophages can lead to the discovery of novel bacteriophages with potential therapeutic or biotechnological applications., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest. Global health matters to every nurse everywhere. In this article we outline why. We highlight some important health issues confronting the world today; explore how these issues are being tackled; and consider the implications for nursing. We describe how nurses are making a difference in the challenging contexts, range and complexity of nursing work round the globe, and we conclude with a call to action. Nurses can influence, and become, policy-makers and politicians, and explain to them why the Sustainable Development Goals cannot be reached without strengthening nursing. In this International Year of the Nurse and Midwife, the window of opportunity is open, but it will not stay open for long. Nurses and midwives globally and locally must be ready to jump through it. We ask you to join hands, and join us.

Nurse leaders at all levels, from ward to board to international stage, need to be savvy about politics, policy and power. They should be at the top table in every health-related organization, and they should know how to make an impact in these challenging environments. Yet top nurses worldwide have few opportunities to develop their policy leadership competencies. The ICN Global Nursing Leadership Institute is a rare and successful example. For 10 years it has prepared top nurses from round the world to drive policy that improves population health, enhances health care, and advances the profession - a major theme at ICN Congress, Singapore, June 2019. Purpose: To analyze the sharpness of the posterior optic edge and edge thickness of intraocular lenses (IOLs) marketed with a square-edged profile., Setting: University of Brighton and Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust, Brighton, England., Design: Laboratory study., Methods: Fourteen square-edged 20.0 diopter IOLs were analyzed, including 9 hydrophobic IOLs (AF-1, AF-1 iSert, Clareon, EyeCee One Crystal, CT Lucia, Envista, EyeCee One, Vivinex iSert, and RayOne Hydrophobic) and 5 hydrophilic IOLs (Asphira, CT Asphina, Incise, Synthesis, and RayOne Hydrophilic). All the IOLs were scanned following a previously published standardized technique using environmental scanning electron microscopy. The posterior optic edges were scanned at a magnification of ×500 and ×200 to measure the radius of curvature of the posterior optic edges and the optic edge thickness., Results: The radius of curvature of the posterior optic edges ranged from 4.6 to 20.6 μm. Except for the Incise IOL (7.7 μm), all hydrophilic IOLs (Synthesis [10.6 μm], Asphira [13.7 μm], RayOne Hydrophilic [14.0 μm], CT Asphina [13.7 μm]) had a radius of curvature greater than 10.0 μm. For the hydrophobic IOLs, the radius of curvature was less than 10.0 μm for the Clareon (7.9 μm), EyeCee One Crystal (4.7 μm), Vivinex iSert (7.6 μm), and CT Lucia (4.6 μm), and greater than 10.0 μm for the Envista (19.7 μm), EyeCee One (13.7 μm), AF-1 iSert (19.7 μm), AF-1 (19.7 μm) and the RayOne Hydrophobic (20.6 μm). The Vivinex iSert (150.5 μm) and the Incise (218.2 μm) were the thinnest IOLs, and the RayOne Hydrophobic (375.8 μm) and RayOne Hydrophilic IOLs (477.1 μm) were the thickest of the hydrophobic and hydrophilic IOLs, respectively., Conclusions: Commercially marketed square-edged IOLs still differed in the sharpness of the posterior optic edge. More hydrophobic IOLs have rounder edges than those studied 10 years ago. We all know great leadership when we see it. Outstanding nurse leaders, guided by a moral compass, simultaneously see the big picture and the consequences at micro level. While policy and politics determine health and nursing practice, most nurses just want to get on with their day job. They carry out decisions made by others but have little say in them, and weak influence or status, although they are increasingly knowledgeable and skilled. In settings where policy decisions are made - parliaments, governments, and boardrooms - nurse leaders are often neither heard nor heeded. This is starting to change. The global Nursing Now campaign is working with the International Council of Nurses, and the World Health Organization, to create and strengthen strategic nursing leadership, as modelled by the International Council of Nurses' Global Nursing Leadership Institute. Biofilm formation in wounds is considered a major barrier to successful treatment, and has been associated with the transition of wounds to a chronic non-healing state. Here, we present a novel laboratory model of wound biofilm formation using ex-vivo porcine skin and a custom burn wound array device. The model supports high-throughput studies of biofilm formation and is compatible with a range of established methods for monitoring bacterial growth, biofilm formation, and gene expression. We demonstrate the use of this model by evaluating the potential for bacteriophage to control biofilm formation by Staphylococcus aureus , and for population density dependant expression of S. aureus virulence factors (regulated by the Accessory Gene Regulator, agr ) to signal clinically relevant wound infection. Enumeration of colony forming units and metabolic activity using the XTT assay, confirmed growth of bacteria in wounds and showed a significant reduction in viable cells after phage treatment. Confocal laser scanning microscopy confirmed the growth of biofilms in wounds, and showed phage treatment could significantly reduce the formation of these communities. Evaluation of agr activity by qRT-PCR showed an increase in activity during growth in wound models for most strains. Activation of a prototype infection-responsive dressing designed to provide a visual signal of wound infection, was related to increased agr activity. In all assays, excellent reproducibility was observed between replicates using this model.

Pickering emulsions stabilised with nanomaterials provide routes to a range of functional macroscopic assemblies. We demonstrate the formation and properties of water-in-oil emulsions prepared through liquid-phase exfoliation of graphene. Due to the functional nature of the stabiliser, the emulsions exhibit conductivity due to inter-particle tunnelling. We demonstrate a strain sensing application with a large gauge factor of ∼40; the highest reported in a liquid. Our methodology can be applied to other two-dimensional layered materials opening up applications such as energy storage materials, and flexible and printable electronics.

Effective engagement of nursing students in the study of biosciences remains a challenge for many tertiary institutes. In this study we attempted to implement and then evaluate a simple hands-on intervention, consisting of a series of hands-on games and puzzles, to increase nursing student engagement with core concepts and anatomical learning involved in clinical anatomy and physiology. The study used a quazi-experimental longitudinal before and after design, to explore the effect of a learning intervention on student performance. Set across three different campuses of the same University, it included 1320 first year undergraduate nursing students from 2013 to 2014 who were studying Anatomy and Physiology. Students were exposed to the interventions or not, and concomitant academic performance, weekly quiz scores, performance in fortnightly worksheets and, across the semester, exam performance were compared. The results show that while the intervention appeared to increase academic performance in students on one campus (2013) compared to the other two, this difference was not sustained into 2014 when a bigger cohort was examined. Despite significant subjective student satisfaction and enthusiasm about these learning and teaching interventions, the data does not support the capacity of these activities to enhance student academic performance. Tertiary entrance scores, being a non-native English speakers and socio-economic status all had a bigger impact on student performance than engagement with fun anatomy and physiology activities., (Crown Copyright © 2016. Proteus mirabilis forms dense crystalline biofilms on catheter surfaces that occlude urine flow, leading to serious clinical complications in long-term catheterized patients, but there are presently no truly effective approaches to control catheter blockage by this organism. This study evaluated the potential for bacteriophage therapy to control P. mirabilis infection and prevent catheter blockage. Representative in vitro models of the catheterized urinary tract, simulating a complete closed drainage system as used in clinical practice, were employed to evaluate the performance of phage therapy in preventing blockage. Models mimicking either an established infection or early colonization of the catheterized urinary tract were treated with a single dose of a 3-phage cocktail, and the impact on time taken for catheters to block, as well as levels of crystalline biofilm formation, was measured. In models of established infection, phage treatment significantly increased time taken for catheters to block (∼ 3-fold) compared to untreated controls. However, in models simulating early-stage infection, phage treatment eradicated P. mirabilis and prevented blockage entirely. Analysis of catheters from models of established infection 10 h after phage application demonstrated that phage significantly reduced crystalline biofilm formation but did not significantly reduce the level of planktonic cells in the residual bladder urine. Taken together, these results show that bacteriophage constitute a promising strategy for the prevention of catheter blockage but that methods to deliver phage in sufficient numbers and within a key therapeutic window (early infection) will also be important to the successful application of phage to this problem., (Copyright © 2016, American Society for Microbiology. Anatomy and Physiology is a core course in pre-registration nursing programs, yet many students have difficulty successfully negotiating the large volume of content and the complex concepts in these bioscience courses. Typically students perform poorly in these 'threshold' courses', despite multiple interventions to support student engagement. Investigation of the shortcomings in these courses, based on feedback from students indicated several key areas of difficulty in the course, especially focused around a relative lack of hands-on 'concrete' activities in laboratories and tutorials. To attempt to address this, academic and technical staff developed activities for students that promoted discussion and allowed students to interact easily and repetitively with content. Interactive tables and posters that needed to be labelled or 'filled-in' using pre-prepared Velcro dots, as well as pre-prepared flash cards to promote group work, were some examples of the activities used to enhance student experiences and promote hands-on learning. Over the academic year of 2013 these activities were introduced into the laboratory and tutorial classes for first year Bachelor of Nursing anatomy and physiology students. Staff and student participants positively rated implementation of these new activities on surveys, as they allowed them to explore the difficult aspects of anatomy and physiology, utilising various learning styles that may have been neglected in the past., (Crown Copyright © 2015. The RCN is on the cusp of a decision that could have profound effects on nursing worldwide. RCN council faces a momentous choice about whether and when to exercise its new power to withdraw the college from membership of the International Council of Nurses (ICN) (letters April 10, analysis and letters April 17, news and letters May 1).

The successful regeneration of large defects in traumatized and diseased tissues depends on the availability of biodegradable and bioactive biomaterials able to guide the tissue during its repair by offering both a physical support and a control of its biological mechanisms. Recently, a novel class of natural, biodegradable biomaterials has been obtained by the thermosetting of defatted soy curd. These biomaterials have been shown to regulate the activity of both tissue and inflammatory cells. Here, soybean-based hydrogels with different physicochemical properties and bioactivity have been obtained with a relatively simple and highly reproducible processing method. The content of the different soy components (e.g., the isoflavones) was tuned varying the solvent system during the extraction procedure, while variations in the material crosslinking provided either loose hydrogels or a bioglue. The biomaterials obtained can be used as either bioadhesives or injectable formulations in regenerative medicine as they were shown to stimulate the synthesis of collagen by fibroblasts and the formation of mineralized bone noduli by osteoblasts.

Despite their known osteoconductivity, clinical use of calcium phosphate cements is limited both by their relatively slow rate of resorption and by rheological properties incompatible with injectability. Bone in-growth and material resorption have been improved by the development of porous calcium phosphate cements. However, injectable formulations have so far only been obtained through the addition of relatively toxic surfactants. The present work describes the response of osteoblasts to a novel injectable foamed bone cement based on a composite formulation including the bioactive foaming agents soybean and gelatine. The foaming properties of both defatted soybean and gelatine gels were exploited to develop a self-hardening soy/gelatine/hydroxyapatite composite foam able to retain porosity upon injection. After setting, the foamed paste produced a calcium-deficient hydroxyapatite scaffold, showing good injectability and cohesion as well as interconnected porosity after injection. The intrinsic bioactivity of soybean and gelatine was shown to favour osteoblast adhesion and growth. These findings suggest that injectable, porous and bioactive calcium phosphate cements can be produced for bone regeneration through minimally invasive surgery., (Copyright © 2010 Acta Materialia Inc. Autologous and allogenic bone grafts are considered as materials of choice for bone reconstructive surgery, but limited availability, risks of transmittable diseases and inconsistent clinical performances have prompted the development of alternative biomaterials. The present work compares the bone regeneration potential of a soybean based bone filler (SB bone filler) in comparison to a commercial 50:50 poly(D: ,L: lactide-glycolide)-based bone graft (Fisiograft((R)) gel) when implanted into a critical size defect (6-mm diameter, 10-mm length) in rabbit distal femurs. The histomorphometric and microhardness analyses of femoral condyles 4, 8, 16 and 24 weeks after surgery showed that no significant difference was found in the percentage of both bone repair and bone in-growth in the external, medium and inner defect areas. The SB filler-treated defects showed significantly higher outer bone formation and microhardness results at 24 weeks than Fisiograft((R)) gel (P < 0.05). Soybean-based biomaterials clearly promoted bone repair through a mechanism of action that is likely to involve both the scaffolding role of the biomaterial for osteoblasts and the induction of their differentiation.

Nursing education in Turkey seems to be flourishing, but many barriers to comprehensive health provision remain.
