Abstract

Jacob Vehicle Systems has developed an integrated engine retarding system that utilizes lost-motion variable valve timing (VVT) for optimum compression release engine braking. The system's efficiency was revealed in a dynamometer test for a six-cylinder, 12-liter, turbo charged diesel engine. Based on the test, the system can increase engine performance by 50-83% at much reduced noise levels compared to conventional retarding systems.

Abstract

Objective: Curcuma longa Rhizome (CLR), due to its potent antioxidant phytochemical constituents, was investigated for its effects on bisphenol A (BPA)-induced cardiovascular and renal damage. Materials and Methods: Sixty rats were randomly selected, and grouped as control, BPA (100 mg/kg), BPA and CLR 100 mg/kg, BPA and CLR 200 mg/kg, CLR 100 mg/kg, and CLR 200 mg/kg for 21 days. Oxidative stress indices, antioxidant status, blood pressure parameters, genotoxicity, and immunohistochemistry were determined. Results: Rats exposed to the toxic effects of BPA had heightened blood pressure, lowered frequency of micronucleated polychromatic erythrocytes, and decreased activities of antioxidant enzymes compared with rats treated with CLR. Moreover, administration of CLR significantly (p<0.05) lowered malondialdehyde content and reduced the serum myeloperoxidase activity. Immunohistochemical evaluation revealed significantly (p<0.05) increased expressions of cardiac troponin and Caspase 3 in the BPA group compared with the CLR-treated groups. Conclusion: C. longa ameliorated cardiotoxic and nephrotoxic actions of bisphenol-A via mitigation of oxidative stress, hypertension, and genotoxicity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The numbers of sessional staff teaching in law schools continue to grow, yet little has been done to provide for their professional development. This is particularly critical because these colleagues are likely to be less able to attend face-to-face development sessions or to participate in informal 'corridor' discussions. This article analyses what amounts to best practice in professional development of sessional colleagues in an online environment, including: the need to adopt a peer-to-peer tone; appeal to a range of teacher experience; draw on contemporary scholarly approaches to teaching and learning issues; and provide recognition of digital literacy, internationalisation, diversity, gender and Indigenous issues. These insights are drawn from the experience of developing modules as part of the Australian Government funded Smart Casual: Promoting Excellence in Sessional Teaching in Law project. The article draws on feedback from sessional staff focus groups and an autoethnography of the authors of the modules to reflect on the complexity of the task of developing professional development materials that neither patronise nor alienate their target audiences and the implications this reflection has on the importance of collegiality in the law school environment. In 1985 the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) made its grants for medical research conditional on the receiving institution submitting all human research, whether or not medical and whether or not funded by the NHMRC, for eth- ics review (NHMRC 2007). However, this NHMRC-induced extension of ethics review to non-medical projects retained the established conceptualisation of research as health and clinical. Over the next two decades, institutions expanded the jurisdic- tion of their ethics review committees to include methods like ethnography and oral history.

229. Do We Drive More Safely When Accidents are More Expensive? Identifying Moral Hazard from Experience Rating Schemes

Abstract

A major shortcoming of the growing empirical work on asymmetric information is the inability to separately identify moral hazard from adverse selection. Abbring et. al. (2003) point out that dynamic insurance data can help here, by asking whether consumers have fewer claims when they are at a place in the ?experience rating? scheme where additional claims are more expensive. However, in the French setting they study, this test boils down to asking whether there is negative state dependence in claims occurrence, and thus requires them to assume away all other forms of state dependence in claims. This paper overcomes this problem by considering U.S data, where claims fall off consumer records after three years, creating an ?insurance event? that changes a consumer?s position in the experience rating scheme with no simultaneous claim, and thus allowing identification of moral hazard even with fairly general controls for state dependence and unobserved heterogeneity. In addition, the U.S. data follow consumers for 10 years (vs. 1 in Abbring et. al) and contain a much wider range of claim price effects, both of which increase identification power. The paper?s core finding is a small, but statistically significant, moral hazard effect. This is made more convincing by the fact that the effect grows following a 1997 pricing change that increased the cost of additional claims relative to the first one. Finally, without the controls for state dependence in claims, this effect disappears. This suggests that the lack of evidence for moral hazard in previous work may have resulted from confounding the negative state dependence associated with moral hazard with some underlying source of positive state dependence in claims occurrence.

Abstract

Despite attempts at clear direction in international, national and journal guidelines, attribution of authorship can be a confusing area for both new and established researchers. As journal articles are valuable intellectual property, authorship can be hotly contested. Individual authors' responsibilities for the integrity of article content have not been well explored. Semi-structured interviews (n = 17) were conducted with staff, student advocates and doctoral candidates working in health research in two universities in Australia. Stratified sampling ensured participants reflected a range of experience across biomedical, clinical and social science disciplines. Participants were asked about their experience with research publication and their views on the responsibilities of authorship. Participants gave a variety of reasons for attribution of authorship including: writing the paper; seniority; and student supervision. Gift authorship was seen by some participants as: a way of maintaining relationships; a reward; a means to increase a paper's credibility; or a demonstration of collaboration between authors. Norms and beliefs differed markedly between disciplines for authorship attribution and, to a lesser extent, for authors' responsibility for content integrity. Discussions about the effect of power differentials on authorship were common across disciplines. This paper describes a broad range of beliefs, values and practice norms held by health science researchers with respect to attribution of authorship and author responsibility for scientific publications. The findings support the need for clarity in relation to authorship, and a research environment which is supportive of ethical behaviour in the publication of research.
