202. Benefit Linkage Effect, Organizational Structure and Collaboration Performance: An Empirical Study of the Agricultural Industrialization Consortium in Shanghai, China.

- Abstract
As a new type of agricultural management organization alliance, the effect of the benefit linkage generated by agricultural industrialization consortium on collaboration performance is closely related to the sustainable development of the agricultural economy. Based on survey data on consortia in Shanghai, this paper analyzes the effects of benefit linkage and uses multiple linear regression modeling to comprehensively explore the impact of benefit linkage effects on collaboration performance from both subjective and objective aspects, as well as the differences in impact on the collaboration performance of consortia with different organizational structures. The results show that the benefit linkage effect has a positive impact on collaboration performance, and there are differences in the impact of the benefit linkage effect on collaboration performance under different types of organizational structures, among which the resource allocation effect, capitalization effect and correlation effect of the benefit linkage of non-joint stock consortia have a positive impact on collaboration performance; the resource allocation effect of joint-stock consortia has no significant impact on collaboration performance, the capitalization effect on collaboration performance is significantly lower than that of non-joint stock consortia, and the correlation effect on collaboration performance is significantly higher than that of non-joint-stock consortia. Therefore, under a certain benefit linkage, according to the establishment purpose and collaboration goal, a consortium with different types of organizational structures should be established to give full play to the impact of the benefit linkage effect on collaboration performance and promote the sustainable development of agricultural industrialization. The regulation of the electricity sector, in general and in the particular case of Spain, has been brilliantly analysed by economists and contemporary jurists placing the emphasis, preferably, on economic efficiency and social justice. This article, based on the writings of economic historians in recent years, has as its objective to shed light on the logic to regulatory changes in Spain. Exactly as has been done for other countries, the explanation of factors and of the characteristics of this regulatory change, without doubt, will contribute to the understanding of its special nature within the overall international panorama, as well as a better understanding of the contributions of other previous and future works from different perspectives of analysis. The conclusions on the historical construction of the regulation of the electricity industry until the twentieth century allow us to define four big stages, deeply conditioned by their political regimes and the economic circumstances of the country, as well as by the unequal importance of economic agents in the taking of decisions: powerful energy companies, weak governments, and a complete lack of consumer input. En aquest projecte es presenta l’anàlisi de millores per al procés d’industrialització dels latiguillos, un component essencial en el sistema de fre d’una motocicleta. Més concretament, s’analitza el procés característic de l’empresa J.Juan Brake Systems, la qual forma part de les principals companyies que proporcionen sistemes de fre a clients arreu del món. En primer lloc, es presenta la metodologia actual seguida per desenvolupar els projectes en la qual s’inclou tant el procés de disseny com la posterior industrialització, el tipus de documentació i procediments necessaris i els membres que treballen a dur a terme totes les tasques imprescindibles. Els principals objectius d’aquest projecte són l’anàlisi de la situació actual de l’empresa i mitjançant la utilització de diverses eines com entrevistes, identificar la problemàtica real amb la finalitat de proposar una sèrie d’accions idònies per ser aplicades sense modificar en un alt grau la metodologia seguida actualment. A més, les accions resultats queden dividides en dos grups segons el grau de prioritat o dificultat d’aplicació. A partir de les propostes realitzades també, es busca l’aplicació de les millors propostes, per tant, es realitza un estudi de cadascuna d’elles tenint en compte tant avantatges com desavantatges i analitzant les possibles conseqüències en el moment de ser aplicades pels companys del departament de processos. Fent servir les millores proposades anteriorment, es desenvolupa la industrialització d’un latiguillo escollit d’un projecte real de l’empresa per dur a terme totes les tasques. Aquestes són les que actualment duen a terme els enginyers, per s’afegeixen les eines proposades a partir de l’anàlisi inicial. Finalment, s’aconsegueix l’aplicació i acceptació de la gran majoria de propostes fetes amb l’excepció de dues en particular. La simplificació dels arxius de consulta es troba en procés d’aplicació per què es troba a càrrec d’un altre departament., This project presents the analysis of improvements for the industrialisation process of brake hoses, an essential component in a motorbike's brake system. More specifically, it analyses the characteristic process of the company J.Juan Brake Systems, which is one of the main companies supplying brake systems to customers all over the world. Firstly, the current methodology followed to develop the projects is presented, which includes both the design process and the subsequent industrialisation, the type of documentation and procedures required and the members who work on carrying out all the essential tasks. The main objectives of this project are to analyse the current situation of the company and, by using various tools such as interviews, to identify the real problems with the aim of proposing a series of suitable actions to be applied without modifying to any great extent the methodology currently followed. Furthermore, the resulting actions are divided into two groups according to the degree of priority or difficulty of implementation. Based on the proposals made, the implementation of the best proposals is also searched for, therefore, a study of each of them is carried out, taking into account both advantages and disadvantages and analysing the possible consequences at the moment of their application by the colleagues of the Processes Department. Using the improvements proposed above, it is developed the industrialisation of a hose chosen from a real project of the company to implement all the tasks. These are the ones currently carried out by the engineers, but the proposed tools are added from the initial analysis. Finally, the application and acceptance of the vast majority of the proposals made is achieved, with the only exception of two in particular. The simplification of the consultation files is in the process of being applied because it is in the hands of another department, while the simplification of the flow of approval of changes has been rejected

With the rise of social platforms and digital media (e.g., videos, (live)streaming, and multi-media blogs), firms and brand owners increasingly depend on influencers to attract consumers, who care about both product quality and consumer-influencer interaction. Sellers thus compete in both influencer and product markets. We develop a theory to understand the influencer labor market and its interaction with product competition, under a plausible specification of influencers' value added. We find: (i) more powerful influencers sell better quality products for sellers with weaker direct-sale capacity, facilitating seller competition; (ii) advances in the intermediation technology can lead to non-monotonic changes in influencers' payoff and income inequality; (iii) style pluralism mitigates market concentration by horizontally differentiating the consumer experience but serves as either complements (intermediate style dispersion) or substitutes (small or large dispersions) to vertical product differentiation; and (iv) influencers may inefficiently under-invest in consumer outreach and unidirectional exclusivity can improve welfare in less competitive markets. Collectively, our findings highlight the novelty of the influencer economy and establish several theoretical baselines for future studies.

211. ESOP Shocks: Employee Ownership and Employment Stability in Public Firms During the COVID-19 Crisis

- Abstract
Did employee ownership preserve jobs and firm-level skill retention during the COVID-19 pandemic? In the United States, employee ownership (EO) primarily takes the form of Employee Stock Ownership Plans (ESOPs). Using a longitudinal dataset composed of Department of Labor Form 5500 – CompuStat Fundamentals matched data from 2010-2022, this thesis examines the relationship between ESOPs and employment stability during the COVID pandemic for a large sample of public firms in the US. A fixed effects specification, controlling for a vector of firm characteristics and the national employment-to-population ratio, suggests that ESOPs had an employment-cushioning effect in public firms during the COVID-19 labor shock, with 2.5-5% higher average employee retention during the negative labor shock in 2020 compared to firms without ESOPs. This job-stability premium did not seem to persist in 2021, except for in firms with more than 10,000 employees, as government and financial intervention spurred a relatively quick, though industry-specific, economic recovery. However, in 2022, ESOPs are again associated with a job-growth premium across the board, displaying hiring rates an average 2% higher than firms without ESOPs. The size and sector of a firm seemed to partially determine the magnitude and significance of the ESOP’s stabilizing effect, with larger and more industrial firms seeing the most notable associations, though the correlation is evident across the sample. This labor-shock-absorbing relationship may have important implications for retaining firm-specific human capital through labor shocks, as well as for policymakers looking to preserve jobs during recessions and cut unemployment and welfare costs.

212. Transforming Aviation's Impact on the Climate: Rethinking the Research Strategy.

Aviation is under tremendous pressure to mitigate its impacts on the climate, but the best response strategies are unknown today due to deep uncertainties. How low-emission fuels will scale to levels relevant for the industry, along with the best strategies for managing contrails and other non-CO
2 effects, are unknowable today with unknown cost and disruption. A conventional risk-based approach that involves investment across a known set of options is unworkable; instead, we argue that an experimentalist approach is needed that addresses deep uncertainties head on. This hinges on four key factors: a critical mass of actors facing strong incentives to identify solutions, a wide search for alternatives through experiments, periodic assessments, and adjustment of goals and strategies. Present strategies do not give enough attention to higher-risk alternatives with disruptive potential, because those approaches have few political and organizational supporters. Small groups of highly motivated actors─such as the nascent coalition of first movers on clean aviation already forming in Europe and the U.S.─could initiate an experimentalist program. The challenges of the aviation sector mirror other hard-to-abate sectors, making this framework potentially applicable to a wider set of sectors where technological, business, and investment choices are shrouded in deep uncertainty.- Published

This book explores the impact of railroads on 19thcentury Russian peasant collectivism. The mutual-insurance mechanism in a precarious agricultural environment, provided bya structured communal-village system predicated on the reputation and authorityof community norms,is exposed to rationalist exchange—occasioning an institutional adaptation process:the individualization of property rights in land. Spatial-mobility technology animated market integration, specialization, literacy,and human-capital acquisition among peasant wage workers who commuted from their villages.Temporarily rising transaction costs forced the Tsar to concede household property rights in land in the so-called Stolypin reform of 1906.This challenge to the imperial patrimony, powered by the railroads, steered late imperial Russia toward constitutional governance.The spatial-mobility technology gave peasants access to centers of agglomeration of knowledge, changedcognitive perceptions of distance, and reduced the uncertainty and opportunity costs of travel. The empirical findings in this monograph corroborate the conclusion that the railroads occasioned a cultural revolution in late imperial Russia and made Stalin unnecessary for the modernization of the Euro-asian giant. This book highlights the profound effect that the development of the railroads had on Russian economic and political institutions and practices. Das Forschungsinteresse dieser Studie richtet sich auf das Zusammenspiel von Biografie und Professionalisierungsprozessen von Akteurinnen in Migrantinnenselbstorganisationen (MSO) bei der Ausübung ihrer Bildungs- und Beratungsarbeit. Es werden drei Fallanalysen mit markanten Innenansichten präsentiert. Als Ergebnis werden drei Muster vorgestellt, die auf unterschiedliche Herstellungsprozesse biografischer Passungsverhältnisse individueller undorganisationaler Professionalisierung und Self-Empowermentstrategien der Akteurinnen verweisen. Die Muster zeigen, dass die Akteurinnen eine bestehende dynamische Wechselbeziehung zwischen der ausgeübten Tätigkeit und den Interaktionsressourcen aus ihren Migrationsbiografien zu nutzen und individuelle Lösungs- und Bewältigungsstrategien bei der Professionalisierung und Etablierung der MSO anzuwenden vermögen. Die priorisierten Zielverständnisse ihrer Tätigkeit unterscheiden sich entlang der drei ausgearbeiteten Muster: die Möglichkeiten die gesellschaftliche Partizipation von Migrantinnen zu erhöhen, Selbstverwirklichung der Migrantinnen zu unterstützen und migrations- und geschlechtsbezogene Exklusionsprozesse zu minimieren.

This book provides an analysis of the various challenges and opportunities facing the Japanese broadcasting industry. It is the first book in English that explores how Japanese broadcasting, especially commercial broadcasting, fulfills its social mission under the threat of the increased popularity of Internet-based media services as it reexamines the role and nature of broadcasting. During a series of disasters and the spread of the new coronavirus in Japan, while varied media connected people and supported socio-economic activities, broadcasting continued to be the most trusted. However, as Internet media attract increasing attention, the trend in broadcast viewership is downward. Commercial broadcasting, in particular, will be strongly affected by that trend and the impact of the shrinking population. Recognizing that such dramatic technological and environmental changes are under way, in addition to the eleven researchers participating in the visiting researcher committee at the Research Institute of the Japan Commercial Broadcasters Association (JBA), four research collaborators and the secretariat (director of the JBA) have contributed to this book. They have taken up issues related to challenges and opportunities for the broadcasting industry based on their respective areas of awareness of the problems, including policies for broadcasting, fake news, disaster responses, viewer trust in television programs, competition with Internet-based services, and the business model for broadcasting.

This book focuses on the establishment process of the Japanese style of management (JSM). Traditionally, it has been widely believed that the JSM is native to Japan and consists of three pillars: lifetime employment, a seniority-based wage system, and company unions. This book opposes these traditional views on the JSM and argues that it has been shaped by the influence of management theories and ideas of other countries. The JSM has not only adopted the ideas and concepts of other countries, but also has refined, translated, and customized them to make such ideas and concepts acceptable in Japan. The hypothesis presented here is that in the postwar period of rapid growth, the JSM was a hybrid set of management theories and techniques greatly influenced by American ideas about management.This book concentrates on the impact of American management theories and ideas on the JSM. Taking the historical point of view, it clarifies that impact not only for academics but also for business people. The hypothesis propounded here is that some of those theories and ideas have been accepted whereas some of them have been rejected and eventually made irrelevant. The following issues are discussed: scientific management, the human relations school, Barnard's organizational theory, Drucker's management thoughts, strategic management, human resource management, and corporate culture.

This book begins by analysing the various corporate governance mechanisms explored in the extant literature and determining their effectiveness in enhancing the firm value using multivariate analysis. The findings are of global relevance as the corporate governance regulations of most countries focus on independent directors as the mainstay of good governance. The empirical evidence from the first objective of this study corroborates the claim that independent directors do not strengthen the firms'governance quality. The book is one of the few works to have analysed the possible reasons behind the ineffectiveness of the independent directors. Also, in view of the famous concept of the bundle of governance mechanisms, it might be possible that the independent directors strengthen the firms'governance quality indirectly by strengthening other governance mechanisms. This aspect too has little precedence. This study adopts a novel moderation and mediation approach to analyse the monitoring behaviour of independent directors in relation to other governance mechanisms. The work is a must read for corporate players as well as researchers and scholars studying this discipline.
