The long term goals of this research were to define the substrate oxidation pathways, the electron transport mechanisms, and the modes of energy conservation employed during the dissimilatory oxidation of sulfur practiced by various species of the thiobacilli. Specific adhesion of the thiobacilli to elemental sulfur was studied by electrical impedance, dynamic light scattering, laser Doppler velocimetry, and optical trapping methods. The conclusion is that the thiobacilli appear to express specific receptors that enable the bacteria to recognize and adhere to insoluble sulfur. The enzyme tetrathionate oxidase was purified from two species of the thiobacilli. Extensive structural and functional studies were conducted on adenosine 5'-phosphosulfate reductase purified from cell-free extracts of Thiobacillus denitrificans. The kinetic mechanism of rhodanese was studied.

Bottom-quark production in p̄p collisions at √s = 1.8 TeV is studied with 5 pb-1 of data collected in 1995 by the DO detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The differential production cross section for b jets in the central rapidity region (|yb| < 1) as a function of jet transverse energy is extracted from a muon-tagged jet sample. Within experimental and theoretical uncertainties, DO results are found to be higher than, but compatible with, next-to-leading-order QCD predictions.

Events in p̄p collisions at √s= 1.8 TeV with total transverse energy exceeding 500 GeV are used to set limits on quark substructure. The data are consistent with next-to-leading order QCD calculations. We set a lower limit of 2.0 TeV at 95% confidence on the energy scale ΛLL for compositeness in quarks, assuming a model with a left-left isoscalar contact interaction term. The limits on ΛLL are found to be insensitive to the sign of the interference term in the Lagrangian. ©2000 The American Physical Society.

We report on a search for second generation leptoquarks (LQ) produced in pp̄ collisions at √s = 1.8 TeV using the D0 detector at Fermilab. Second generation leptoquarks are assumed to be produced in pairs and to decay to either μ or ν and either a strange or a charm quark (q). Limits are placed on σ(pp̄ → LQLQ → μν + jets) as a function of the mass of the leptoquark. For equal branching ratios to μq and νq, second generation scalar leptoquarks with a mass below 160 GeV/c2, vector leptoquarks with anomalous minimal vector couplings with a mass below 240 GeV/c2, and vector leptoquarks with Yang-Mills couplings with a mass below 290 GeV/c2, are excluded at the 95% confidence level. © 1999 The American Physical Society.

We have studied tt̄ production using multijet final states in pp̄ collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.8 TeV, with an integrated luminosity of 110.3 pb-1. Each of the top quarks with these final states decays exclusively to a bottom quark and a W boson, with the W bosons decaying into quark-antiquark pairs. The analysis has been optimized using neural networks to achieve the smallest expected fractional uncertainty on the tt̄ production cross section, and yields a cross section of 7.1±2.8 (stat)±1.5 (syst) pb, assuming a top quark mass of 172.1 GeV/c2. Combining this result with previous DØ measurements, where one or both of the W bosons decay leptonically, gives a tt̄ production cross section of 5.9±1.2 (stat)±1.1 (syst) pb. ©1999 The American Physical Society.

Environmental health specialists (EHS) conduct many occupational activities outdoors that may place them at increased risk for contracting a vectorborne disease. We conducted a risk assessment for tick exposure in EHS by analyzing job description, tick exposure, and the extent to which personal protective measures (PPM) were used. This pilot study focuses on eight counties in the central Piedmont region of North Carolina and follows 29 EHS during May through August 2014. A survey was administered to participants at the beginning of the study and showed that participants used PPM while working outdoors in environments conducive to tick exposure. Participants reported wearing PPM only 16% of the time they spent working outdoors. More than 28% of respondents self-reported having previously experienced a tickborne disease (primarily Rocky Mountain spotted fever) and one participant reported receiving medical treatment for a tickborne disease during the course of the study. Participants were exposed to two tick species (Amblyomma americanum Linnaeus; Dermacentor variabilis Say) and 279 ticks were submitted to researchers during the study. Although 70% of respondents reported being knowledgeable about tickborne disease, low PPM usage indicates either EHS do not believe the threat is significant, or they believe PPM available to them are ineffective. - Abstract
Throughout the middle decades of the 20th Century Indigenous people were the target of efforts to assist in economic development. In large part these externally developed, modernisation based efforts failed. In response, a second wave of Indigenous development has emerged; one in which Indigenous peoples are striving to rebuild their 'nations' and improve their lot through economic development 'on their own terms'. Key to this approach is the pursuit by Indigenous people of the recognition of their rights to their traditional lands and resources. This paper examines the emergence of this second wave of Indigenous development in Canada.

Introduction: Akathisia is a common and severely disabling medication-induced movement disorder. The condition is often missed, and patients suffer for a long time until diagnosed and managed properly. It is important to bring awareness to the clinicians for early detection and management of akathisia. Methods: We reviewed a 4-year record of patients seen at a comprehensive cancer center for anxiety and restlessness. Patients diagnosed with akathisia and the medications causing akathisia were identified. Management of akathisia is discussed. Results: The results showed that 4.7% of patients developed akathisia while taking antiemetic agents to control chemotherapy-induced nausea/vomiting. Early detection and management of akathisia resulted in quick recovery and reduced patients' suffering. Conclusion: Akathisia is an unpleasant feeling of motor restlessness with anxiety. Clinicians need to have a full understanding to identify the subtle difference between functional anxiety and akathisia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

- Abstract
MIS for the correction of ASD represents a continuously evolving surgical field. As the incidence of ASD continues to increase in the aging population, MIS offers an effective alternative means of surgical intervention while reducing the significant perioperative morbidity associated with traditional open techniques. MIS is not without risk; however, optimized patient selection can minimize complication risk and produce favorable clinical and radiographic outcomes. This review seeks to highlight appropriate patient selection, indications, complications, and areas in need of further investigation to evaluate long-term outcomes of these novel surgical techniques. - Abstract
Spinal deformity can occur at any age from either congenital or acquired etiologies leading to coronal or sagittal imbalance. Regardless of etiology, deformity and imbalance lead to both functional and psychological impairment. For fixed deformities, osteotomies provide a powerful tool for realignment. In this review, the clinical and radiographic indications for osteotomies are outlined. Along with indications, specific considerations with regard to planning and executing Smith Peterson Osteotomies, Pedicle Subtraction Osteotomies, and Vertebral Column Resections will be detailed. Banks and other card issuers are fighting to recover losses stemming from merchant data breaches that have resulted in the release of millions of payment card records. The fight hasn't always been easy, especially when the card issuer has no direct contractual relationship with the data breach victim, and the applicable statutes may not provide card issuers with a right of action. This article first reviews the prevalent payment card system's data chain of custody and the data security regulations applicable to custodians in the chain, and then examines various recent claims that have been asserted by card issuers in cases brought to recover damages.
