241. Linker Encouraged Solid State Synthesis of MOF Derived Z-Scheme NiCo2O4/NiO/C toward Efficient Removal of Organic and Inorganic Pollutants from Water

Abstract

Here, we represent a solid-state route for the construction of MOF derived multifunctional Z-scheme NiCo2O4/NiO/C applied for the photocatalytic removal of methylene blue (dye) and tetracycline (drug) and the reduction of Cr(VI) (heavy metal). The developed solid-state method yielded a highly effective NiCo2O4/NiO/C catalyst by mechanically grinding independently produced Ni and Co-MOFs and subsequently pyrolyzing them. The use of different linkers in the Ni MOF (H3-BTC linker) and Co-MOF (2-methylimidazole linker) proved to be effective in constructing the NiCo2O4/NiO/C composite, ensuring a nonaggregated distribution on a carbon framework. Such a synthesized Z-scheme NiCo2O4/NiO/C composite has performed exceptionally well to achieve excellent degradation of MB (98.23% in 120 min) and TC (92.85% in 25 min) and Cr(VI) reduction (98.22% in 20 min), with excellent recyclability and stability. The NiCo2O4/NiO/C composite, synthesized using Ni and Co-MOFs prepared with different linkers, outperformed its counterpart prepared using Ni and Co-MOFs with identical linkers (either 2-methylimidazole or H3BTC). This study paves the way for the future synthesis of MOF derived bimetallic composites for photocatalytic applications.

248. Revitalising Traditional Street Markets in Rural Korea: Design Thinking and Sense-Making Methodology

Abstract

This article reports on an academic-industrial cooperation between students at the Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology and a local foundation working to revitalise the Eonyang traditional market in Ulsan, South Korea. Students majoring in disciplines ranging from natural and applied sciences to business administration were introduced to design thinking, the double diamond model, and sense-making as frameworks for generating creative outcomes. Those outcomes included media, signage and packaging, a display stand, an accessory for hikers, an artistic reinterpretation of the traditional store shutter, the design for a guesthouse and new packaging for locally produced products. Students presented their ideas at a public exhibition as team projects that involved 3D printing, CAD, Web-design, graphic design and motion-picture editing tools. The study reveals that students learn more effectively when pedagogy emphasises active learning and on-site observation through design-based integrated education. Its qualitative research involved interviews in which students experienced how design thinking methodology can transform a local economy. The methods reveal a new educational model centred upon creative and applied learning.

249. Type D Personality as a Predictor of Smoking Cessation Failure in Smoking High School Adolescents

Abstract

The aim of this study was to identify the association between type D personality and smoking cessation among high school students who had participated in a stop smoking program. From 27 high schools, we recruited 279 smoking students who had participated in a stop smoking program between May 29, 2015, and January 25, 2016. About 26.5% of participants had a type D personality. A logistic regression analysis revealed that initiating smoking before or during 5th grade, smoking 21 or more cigarettes daily, and having a type D personality were significantly related to smoking cessation failure. Type D personality was significantly associated with social nicotine dependency and was a predictor of smoking cessation failure after a stop smoking program. Accordingly, type D personality should be considered along with other smoking-related factors when attempting to promote smoking cessation among high school adolescents.
