Background Advances in minimally invasive surgery have expanded the indications for interlaminar full-endoscopic discectomy. Although the clinical outcomes for this approach may be equivalent to those of conventional microscopic discectomy, the supporting evidence is still based on small, single-center, prospective, and retrospective studies. Therefore, a multicenter randomized controlled trial is warranted. Methods This will be a prospective, multicenter, randomized controlled trial comparing the efficacy and safety of interlaminar full-endoscopic discectomy to those of conventional microscopic discectomy. The trial will enroll 100 participants with a lumbar disc herniation, 50 in each group. The primary outcome will be the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) score at 12 months post-surgery. Secondary outcomes will be back and leg pain (visual analog scale); the ODI; the EuroQol-5-dimension score; patient satisfaction; and walking distance/time and time to return to daily activities post-surgery. Surgical outcomes will include postoperative drainage, operative time, duration of hospital stay, postoperative creatine kinase level as an indicator of muscle injury, and postoperative scarring. Postoperative magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography, and simple radiography will be performed to evaluate radiographic outcomes between the two surgical approaches. Surgery-related complications and adverse effects will be evaluated as safety outcomes. A single assessor at each participating hospital, blinded to group allocation, will assess the enrolled participants at baseline, at 2 weeks, and at 3, 6, and 12 months postoperatively. Discussion This trial is designed to determine whether interlaminar full-endoscopic discectomy is clinically comparable to microscopic discectomy to treat lumbar disc herniations. All efforts will be made to reduce bias, including adequate sample size, blinded analyses, and multicenter prospective registration. The outcomes will inform practice, providing the evidence needed for using interlaminar full-endoscopic over microscopic discectomy by confirming the potential of this technique to improve patient satisfaction and clinical outcomes. We describe the synthesis, characterization, molecular modeling, and in vitro anticancer activity of three benzothiazole aniline (BTA) ligands and their corresponding platinum (II) complexes. We designed the compounds based on the selective antitumor properties of BTA, along with three types of metallic centers, aiming to take advantage of the distinctive and synergistic activity of the complexes to develop anticancer agents. The compounds were characterized using nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, elemental analysis, and tested for antiproliferative activity against multiple normal and cancerous cell lines. L1, L2, and L1Pt had better cytotoxicity in the liver, breast, lung, prostate, kidney, and brain cells than clinically used cisplatin. Especially, L1 and L1Pt demonstrated selective inhibitory activities against liver cancer cells. Therefore, these compounds can be a promising alternative to the present chemotherapy drugs.

Background The titrated extract of Centella asiatica (CA) has received much attention as a cosmeceutical ingredient owing to its anti-wrinkle effect. However, due to the low solubility and high molecular weight of pharmacologically active constituents, including asiatic acid (AA), madecassic acid (MA), and asiaticoside (AS), it is challenging to fabricate high-payload topical preparations of CA with satisfactory skin absorption profiles. Purpose This study aimed to design a high-payload topical preparation of CA using nanocrystallization technique and to evaluate its skin absorption profile and local tolerability. Methods High-payload nanocrystal suspensions (NSs) were prepared using lab-scale bead-milling technology, by adjusting the type and amount of suspending agent, CA content, type of vehicle, and milling speed. CA-loaded NSs were characterized in terms of morphology, particle size, crystallinity, and in vitro dissolution pattern. Skin absorption of CA nanocrystals was evaluated using a vertical Franz diffusion cell mounted with porcine skin. In vivo skin irritation following topical application of high-payload NS was assessed in normal rats. Results The optimized NS system, composed of 10% (w/v) CA, 0.5% polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) K30 as steric stabilizer, and 89.5% of distilled water, was characterized as follows: spherical or elliptical in shape, 200 nm in size, with low crystallinity. The in vitro dissolution of AA or MA from NSs was markedly faster compared to raw material, under sink condition. Penetration of AA, MA, and AS in the porcine skin was markedly elevated using the high-payload NS formula, providing 5-, 4-, and 4.5-fold higher accumulation in skin layer, compared to that of the marketed cream formula (CA 1%, Madeca cream). Moreover, topical application of high-payload NS was tolerable, showing neither erythema nor oedema in normal rats. Conclusion The novel NS system is expected to be a virtuous approach for offering a better skin absorption of CA, without using an excess quantity of solubilizers.

A single-camera color PIV system that can acquire PIV data of three separated layers has been redesigned, purposing improvement of wind tunnel applicability. We target smoke image that has particle-per-pixel values higher than unity. The system constitutes of a high-power color-coding illuminator and a digital color high-speed video camera. RGB values in recorded image involves severe color contaminations due to five optical and digital sequences (Fig. 1). To quantify this, a snapshot calibration is proposed to describe the contamination matrix equation (Eq. (1)). Taking the inverse matrix (Eq. (2)) allows in-plane PIV in each color layer to be accurately implemented. We also derive mathematical limits to operate the colored smoke PIV, which is explained by the matrix property (Eq (3)). Feasibility of the proposed method has been demonstrated by application to a turbulent wake behind a Delta wing (Fig. 2) and also to a boundary layer flow along heated chocolate.

In this study, phytochemical compositions of Lycium ruthenicum Murray ethanol extract (LRE) were analyzed by LC-ESI-MS/MS and the protective effect of LRE on inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) was evaluated in a dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) induced experimental colitis mice model. The results showed that a total of 129 compounds were tentatively identified, including phenols/phenolic acids, flavonoids and others. LRE supplementation significantly reduced DSS-induced body weight loss, disease activity index increase, colon length shortening and colonic pathological damage. LRE inhibited intestinal inflammation by regulating nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathways, restored intestinal immune homeostasis by regulating immune cell infiltration and T lymphocyte subsets, and suppressed (NOD)-like receptor family pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome activation. Moreover, the LRE profoundly ameliorated aberrant oxidative stress and restored the intestinal barrier integrity of colitis. Together, LRE supplementation might provide a new dietary strategy for preventing and ameliorating IBD as a functional food.

Spinal percutaneous biportal endoscopic surgery (PBES) is a minimally invasive surgery; however, it is associated with several poor outcomes. This study aimed to analyze unsuccessful PBES outcomes and verify their relationships with patient satisfaction. From May 2015 to June 2018, PBES was performed at several institutions. Unsuccessful outcomes (reoperation and prolonged hospital stay) due to various reasons (hematoma, lesion recurrence, incomplete decompression, dural tear, instability, ascites, and infection) were analyzed. To verify the relationships between surgical experience and unsuccessful outcomes, the first 50 cases and the later cases were compared. Logistic regression was used to assess the relationships between unsuccessful outcomes and patient dissatisfaction. The effect of the particle sizes (307, 259, 172, and 50 μm) on rheological properties and printing performance for a food-ink dispersion system that 20% (w/w) of spinach powder was incorporated in 10% (w/w) xanthan gum mixture was investigated. Scanning electron microscopy images demonstrated that the larger particle size (307 μm and 259 μm) possess a skeletal-like and cellular structure, and are more porous than the smaller particle size (up to 172 μm). The increase of particle size significantly affected the composition and bulk density (ranged from 0.15 for 50 μm to 0.22 for 307 μm) of the spinach powder. Reduction in particle size resulted in the increase of water and oil holding capacity, but did not affect the water solubility index. Increasing particle size promoted a rise of the values of the storage modulus and loss modulus systematically. The shear modulus of spinach dispersion was ranged from 2.97 ± 1.26 kPa for finest size (50 μm) to 6.43 ± 1.41 kPa for a particle size of 307 μm and increased with increasing particle size. All dispersions were printed smoothly regardless of the particle size. The results obtained in this study suggest that increasing the particle size of the incorporated food powder can achieve efficient mechanical strength increase and a limit the incorporated powder content, simultaneously, due to its excessive increase. This may be useful in determining parameters which required to prepare the food-ink system such as the milling time and the maximum incorporation content of the food powder.

Fly ash (FA) and zeolite (Z) are known to reduce bioavailability of metals in soils via immobilization; however, these amendments may not only immobilize metals such as copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn), but also reduce nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) availability in the soils via sorption (for N by Z) and precipitation (for P by FA). This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of application of FA and Z (0, 5, and 10% rate) on the availability of nutrients as well as metals in the metal-contaminated soils cultivated with paddy rice (Oryza sativa L.). Both FA and Z reduced Cu and Zn uptake by rice while increasing metal retention in the soils regardless of the application rates. However, reduced uptake of metals did not translate into increase in rice growth, especially at the 10% of amendment rates, due to decreased nutrient uptake as indicated by higher NH4+ and available P concentration in the soils amended with Z and FA, respectively, which inhibited tillering in the early rice growth period and thus reduced biomass accumulation at maturity. Our results suggest that FA and Z may reduce Cu and Zn uptake by rice in the soils contaminated with the metals; however, the availability of N and P is likely to be co-decreased. We suggest that the capacities of FA and Z to immobilize nutrients as well as metals need to be considered prior to using the amendments in metal-contaminated rice paddies. We experimentally investigated the effects of both the compressibility and nozzle width on the local heat transfer distribution of microscale unconfmed slot jets impinging on a uniformly heated flat plate. We made heat transfer measurements under the following experimental conditions; Reynolds numbers of Re = 4000~10000, Mach numbers of Ma = 0.13~0.68, nozzle-to-plate distances of H/B = 3~25, lateral distances of x/B = 0~25, and nozzle widths of B = 300~700 μm having a nozzle aspect ratio of y/B = 30. A thermal infrared imaging technique was used to measure the impingement plate temperature. The experimental results show that for all tested Re and H/B values at a nozzle width of B = 300 μm, the Nusselt number maximum occurred nearly at the stagnation point and then monotonically decreased along the downstream. However, at B = 500 and 700 μm, the maximum Nusselt number point shifted toward x/B ≈ 1.5~2.0. And the Nusselt number increased, as x/B increased, from the stagnation point to the shifted maximum point and monotonically decreased afterward. This shifted maximum point may be attributable to vortex rings promoting sudden flow acceleration and entrainment of surrounding air moving along the jet axis. For the same Reynolds number, the Nusselt number in the stagnation region increased as the nozzle width increased due to a momentum increase of the jet flow caused by the formation of vortices. And, the Nusselt numbers for the smallest nozzle width of B = 300 μm (or highest Mach number at a given Reynolds number) at all H/B and Reynolds numbers tested significantly deviated from those for B = 500 and 700 μm in the downstream region corresponding to x/B > 5, suggesting that the compressibility, when it is high, can affect the heat transfer in the downstream region.

The D1 dopamine receptor agonist, SKF-38393, induces cytotoxicity in striatal dopaminergic neurons via an extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) signaling cascade. However, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. We hypothesized that repeated activation of dopaminergic receptors by agonists could lead to neuronal cell death. This study investigated the effects of SKF-38393 on dopaminergic neuronal cell death in a 6-hydroxydopamine-lesioned rat model of Parkinson’s disease (PD) and PC12 cells. In the PD model, SKF-38393 administration (3 and 10 mg/kg per day, s.c.) for 8 weeks significantly increased the number of tyrosine hydroxylase-immunopositive neuronal cells in nigrostriatal regions. SKF-38393 administration for 8 weeks induced phosphorylation of sustained ERK1/2 and Bad (Bcl-2-associated death promoter) at Ser155 (BadSer155), and augmented Bax (Bcl-2-associated X protein) expression. However, SKF-38393 only increased Bad phosphorylation at Ser112 (BadSer112) when administered for 4 weeks. In PC12 cells, toxic levels of SKF-38393 (20 and 50 μM) rapidly induced formation of neurite-like processes, but not in the presence of an adenylyl cyclase inhibitor (MDL-12330 A). SKF-38393 (20 and 50 μM) induced sustained ERK1/2 and BadSer155 phosphorylation as well as caspase-3 activation. At a non-toxic level (5 μM), SKF-38393 produced only transient ERK1/2 and BadSer112 phosphorylation. Repeated treatments with SKF-38393 (5 μM) for 1–3 days activated BadSer112. Repeated treatments for 4–7 days induced sustained ERK1/2 and BadSer155 phosphorylation as well as Bax and caspase-3 activation. These results suggest that SKF-38393 induces neurotoxicity by activation of the sustained ERK–Bad–Bax system. These findings contribute to an understanding of the adverse effects of D1 dopamine receptor agonists in patients with PD.

A visualization of thermal diffusion in a horizontal pipe flow is conducted to elucidate the axial diffusion characteristics of two fluids of differing temperatures, particularly those flows between the laminar and turbulent flow regimes. Tracer particles are used to detect the thermal diffusion interface as well as to measure streamwise velocity profiles. We found that the Hagen–Poiseuille parabolic velocity profile established a long axial diffusion length that drives thermal convection in the pipe cross-sectional plane. This situation results in a 3D interface at Reynolds number, Re = 600, and a vertically stratified interface at Re = 1900. In turbulent flows at Re = 5700, an anti-diffusion spot appears in the front section before undergoing rapid mixing under turbulence. From the visualized particle images, the apparent axial coefficients of diffusion were measured and compared with the friction properties of the pipe. Furthermore, particle image velocimetry (PIV) explored the two-way coupling mechanism of between the temperature and the velocity within the thermal diffusion process.

Bioavailability and bone loss inhibitory effects of vitamin D2 derived from UV-irradiated shiitake mushroom were determined in vivo. The effect of the absence of ovaries on the bioavailability of vitamin D2 and bone structure was also investigated. Sham operated (sham) and ovariectomized (OVX) rats were divided in 3 groups according to their diets, i.e. control: only vitamin D-deficient diets; UV(X): vitamin D-deficient diets with non-irradiated mushroom powder; UV(O): vitamin D-deficient diets with irradiated mushroom powder. The obtained results showed that vitamin D2 from shiitake mushroom was able to increase bone mineral density and trabecular bone structure of femur bone as well as its bioavailability. The absence of estrogen induced adverse effects not only on bioavailability of vitamin D2 but also on trabecular bone. In conclusion, vitamin D2-fortified shiitake mushroom might help postmenopausal women increase vitamin D2 bioavailability and retard trabecular bone loss. Frictional drag reduction due to bubble lubrication was investigated by measuring liquid films creeping along a wall within a two-phase turbulent boundary layer. We developed noninvasive time-resolved ultrasonic pulse echography for imaging a liquid film at a profiling rate of 3 kHz and a spatial resolution of 50 μm. Various film patterns were obtained for a 4-m-long flat-bottom model ship towed in a 100-m-long water tank, where a drag reduction rate of 30% was recorded for maximum air injection. We found that the liquid-film thickness ranged from 50 to 150 wall units of the single-phase turbulent boundary layer; this film was thicker than the buffer layer depth. With an increase in the air injection flow rate, the average thickness decreased close to the buffer layer limit while the skewness and kurtosis of the probability density function of the film thickness increased. A sudden transition of the film form was detected according to the kurtosis, allowing the monitoring of the criteria of the coalescence of dispersed bubbles into large elongated bubbles via ultrasonic pulse echography.

Sepsis is a disease responsible for the death of almost all critical patients. Once infected by virus or bacteria, patients can die due to systemic inflammation within a short period of time. Cytokine storm plays an essential role in causing organ dysfunction and septic shock. Thus, inhibition of cytokine secretion is considered very important in sepsis therapy. In this study, we found that TFP, an antipsychotic drug mainly used to treat schizophrenia by suppressing dopamine secretion, inhibited cytokine release from activated immune cells both in vitro and in vivo. Trifluoperazine (TFP) decreased the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines without altering their transcription level. In LPS-induced endotoxemia and cecal content injection (CCI) models, TFP intraperitoneal administration improved survival rate. Thus, TFP was considered to inhibit the secretion of proteins through a mechanism similar to that of W7, a calmodulin inhibitor. Finally, we confirmed that TFP treatment relieved organ damage by estimating the concentrations of aspartate transaminase (AST), alanine transaminase (ALT), and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) in the serum. Our findings were regarded as a new discovery of the function of TFP in treating sepsis patients. Key messages • TFP inhibits LPS-induced activation of DCs by suppressing pro-inflammatory cytokine. • Treatment of TFP increases survival of LPS-induced endotoxemia and CCI sepsis models. • TFP exerted a protective effect against tissue or organ damage in animal models. This paper provides a solution to the problem of the deformation of 3D printed cookie products during post-processing such as baking. The influence of the incorporation of hydrocolloids on the dimensional stability of the cookie dough during temperature variations was investigated. Methylcellulose and xanthan gum were blended in mass fractions of 0.5, 1, 2, and 3 g/100 g dough basis. In dynamic viscoelasticity experiments, during the temperature sweep, the cookie doughs with methylcellulose showed losses in storage modulus (G′) and loss modulus (G″) that were comparable to those of the control samples. Although the incorporated xanthan gum exhibited high structural retention owing to its high shear modulus, its low extrudability resulted in a high extrusion hardness and poor 3D printing performance. In the post-processing, sufficient dimensional stability was observed even with a xanthan gum incorporation of 0.5 g/100 g. Moreover, the heat-resistant 3D printable cookie samples with 0.5 g/100 g xanthan gum exhibited a texture profile having a hardness and fracturability similar to those of the control cookies.

The purpose of this study was to determine the possible deleterious effects of e-cigarette vapor on osteoblast interaction with dental implant material. Osteoblasts were cultured onto Ti6Al4V titanium implant disks and were then exposed or not to whole cigarette smoke (CS), as well as to nicotine-rich (NR) or nicotine-free (NF) e-vapor for 15 or 30 minutes once a day for 1, 2, or 3 days, after which time various analyses were performed. Osteoblast growth on the titanium implant disks was found to be significantly (P < .001) reduced following exposure to CS and to the NR and NF e-vapors. Osteoblast attachment to the dental implant material was also dysregulated by CS and the NR and NF e-vapors through a decreased production of adhesion proteins such as F-actin. The effects of CS and e-cigarette vapor on osteoblast growth and attachment were confirmed by reduced alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity and tissue mineralization. The adverse effects of CS and the NR and NF e-vapors on osteoblast interaction with dental implant material also involved the caspase-3 pathway, as the caspase-3 protein level increased following exposure of the osteoblasts to CS or e-vapor. It should be noted that the adverse effects of CS on osteoblast growth, attachment, ALP, and mineralized degradation were greater than those of the NR and NF e-vapors, although the latter did downregulate osteoblast interaction with the dental implant material. Overall results suggest the need to consider e-cigarettes as a possible contributor to dental implant failure and/or complications.

A similar color change to meat would promote the appetite of consumers for meat analogs. In this study, three-dimensional (3D) printable colorant-containing meat analogs were developed to mimic the red and brown color of meat before and after cooking. These color changes were realized based on the thermal lability of beet red and the Maillard reaction. Moreover, we studied the influence of the addition of xylose on the shear modulus, printing performance, color, texture, chemical structure, and microstructure of colorant-containing meat analogs. Upon increasing the amount of xylose added, the raw colorant-containing meat analogs showed an increase in shear modulus, dimensional stability, and hardness; whereas, cooked colorant-containing meat analogs showed an increase in hardness, and a decrease in lightness, yellowness, hue angle, and chroma. Moreover, adding xylose changed the interactions and microstructure of colorant-containing meat analogs, leading to texture changes. This study would provide guidelines for the color and texture change by adding reducing saccharides to protein-rich gels.

Liposomes have been utilized as a drug delivery system to increase the bioavailability of drugs and to control the rate of drug release at the target site of action. However, the occurrence of self-aggregation, coalescence, flocculation and the precipitation of aqueous liposomes during formulation or storage can cause degradation of the vesicle structure, leading to the decomposition of liposomes. To increase the stability of liposomes, post-processing techniques have been applied as an additional process to liposomes after formulation to remove water and generate dry liposome particles with a higher stability and greater accessibility for drug administration in comparison with aqueous liposomes. This review covers the effect of these techniques including freeze drying, spray drying and spray freeze drying on the stability, physicochemical properties and drug encapsulation efficiency of dry liposomes. The parameters affecting the properties of liposomes during the drying process are also highlighted in this review. In addition, the impact of using a protective agent to overcome such limitations of each process is thoroughly discussed through various studies.

Background Lower lumbar osteoporotic vertebral compression fracture in extremely elderly patients can often lead to lumbosacral radiculopathy (LSR) due to delayed vertebral collapse (DVC). Surgical intervention requires posterior instrumented lumbar fusion as well as vertebral augmentation or anterior column reconstruction depending on the cleft formation and intravertebral instability. However, it is necessary to decide on surgery in consideration of the patient’s frail status, surgical invasiveness, and rehabilitation. In the lower lumbar DVC without intravertebral instability, biportal endoscopic posterior lumbar decompression and vertebroplasty (BEPLD + VP) can be simultaneously attempted. This study aimed to assess the clinical outcomes of BEPLD + VP for the treatment of DVC-related LSR. Methods This retrospective case series enrolled 18 consecutive extremely elderly (aged ≥ 75-year-old) patients (6 men and 12 women) who had lower lumbar (at or below L3) DVC-related LSR. Patients who require anterior column reconstruction, such as cleft formation accompanied by intravertebral instability and patients who have not been followed for more than 6 months, were excluded from this study. All patients underwent BEPLD + VP under epidural anesthesia. Clinical results were evaluated by the visual analog scale (VAS) score and the modified Japanese Orthopedic Association (mJOA) scores. Results Most of the patients had DVC affecting level L4, with the deformation being a flat type or concave type rather than a wedge type. The VAS score (back and leg) significantly decreased from 7.78 ± 1.17 and 6.89 ± 1.13 preoperatively to 2.94 ± 0.64 and 2.67 ± 1.08 within 2 postoperative days (p < 0.001). The mJOA score significantly improved from 4.72 ± 1.27 preoperatively to 8.17 ± 1.15 in the final follow-up (p < 0.001). The mean recovery rate (RR) in the last follow-up was 56.07% ± 9.98. Incidental durotomy was reported in two patients and epidural hematomas in another two patients; however, all patients improved with conservative treatment, and no re-operation was required. Conclusions BELPD + VP was a type of salvage therapy that reduces surgical morbidity, requires major spine surgery under general anesthesia and provides good clinical outcomes in extremely elderly patients with DVC-related LSR.

Floating cranes are used for the construction and installation work of harbors, various heavy industries, and offshore structures. In the case of floating cranes that need to move around the work site, their navigation can be constrained due to marine bridges. In some cases, the clearance under the bridge between the water surface and the bottom of the marine bridge may be too low, and floating cranes cannot pass under the marine bridge. In this study, the height of the marine bridges and the boom height of the floating cranes considering the minimum luffing angle were investigated. Through minimizing the boom luffing angle of the floating crane by the height of back tower, a floating crane with improved mobility through marine bridges was developed. A structural analysis model was produced to check whether the developed crane design satisfies the design criteria obeying the KR, DNVGL, and ABS rules, including luffing condition as a special consideration. As a result of the structural analyses, structural safety was validated for the service, stowage, and luffing conditions in terms of combined stresses, displacements, and buckling.

We investigated whether 3-dimensional (3D) printed models can decrease operation time and improve the quality of reduction for calcaneal fractures. The study involved 48 patients with unilateral intra-articular calcaneal fractures, who were retrospectively case-matched according to Sander's classification, age, and sex. Group A (24 patients) was operated using 3D printed models as a preoperative and intraoperative tool, and group B (24 patients) was operated using standard techniques without 3D printed model. Operation time was significantly shorter for group A, compared to group B (82.3 ± 13.2 vs 91.4 ± 16.0, p = .036). The differences between the radiological parameters of operated calcaneus, compared to the normal side was similar between the 2 groups (Böhler angle, 5.3° ± 3.9° vs 4.2° ± 4.7°, p = .45, Gissane angle, 5.9° ± 12.5° vs 8.4° ± 11.0°, p = .54). The number of screws projecting more than 5 mm from the cortex was lower in group A than in group B (7/187, 4% vs 16/208, 8%, p = .11). The number of screw holes of the plate cut intraoperatively was significantly lower for group A compared to group B (1 vs 138). Although group A started weightbearing 3 to 4 weeks earlier than group B, the radiological parameters were similar between groups that early weightbearing was possible for group A using the 3D printed models (Böhler angle, - 1.5° ± 0.8° vs - 1.8° ± 1.2°, p = .28, Gissane angle, 2.5° ± 2.6° vs 3.5° ± 4.3°, p = .39). The operation time was shorter while using the 3D printed models, compared to that of the standard technique without using the 3D printed model. The radiological parameters were not statistically different, and the quality of fracture reduction seemed similar. However, with the use of 3D printed models, early weightbearing was possible without significant subsidence of reduced fragments or failure of fracture reduction, comparable to non-weightbearing cases.

Oral montelukast (MTK) is prescribed to treat asthma or rhinitis, and is clinically investigated as new medication in the treatment of Alzheimer's dementia. Herein, in order to better patient's compliance, microsuspensions (MSs)-based oral liquid preparations of montelukast (MTK) were formulated with polymeric suspending agents including hypromellose (HPMC), and those drug-polymer interaction, physicochemical stability, dissolution, and in vivo pharmacokinetic profile was evaluated. When amorphous MTK particle was suspended in aqueous vehicle, it was readily converted into crystalline form and grown into aggregates, drastically lowering dissolution rate. However, the addition of HPMC polymer markedly suppressed the crystal growth, providing both improved drug stability and profound dissolution profile. Raman spectrometry denoted the inter-molecular hydrogen boding between MTK particle and HPMC polymer. The crystal growth or dissolution profile of MSs was markedly affected by pharmaceutical additives (sucrose or simethicone) in the preparations or storage temperature. The optimized HPMC-based MS exhibited over 80% higher bioavailability, compared to marketed granule (Singulair®) in rats. Therefore, novel MTK-loaded MS can be a promising liquid preparation, bettering oral absorption and patient's compliance.

Plant-based oil inks that imitate the texture and melting behavior of traditional animal fats using 3D printing have been developed. The influence of the incorporation of potato starch and the type of oil on rheology and meltability was investigated. The results showed that the dynamic modulus and hardness of fat analogs increased, whereas fat analog meltability decreased with an increase in potato starch content. Coconut oil and soybean oil-containing fat analogs incorporated with proper potato starch levels exhibited good printability and similar meltability to commercial beef and pork fats. The addition of potato starch suppressed fat analog meltability as it disrupted the inulin matrix. Fat analogs containing coconut oil could be texturized at temperatures lower than those required for their soybean oil counterparts. The fat analogs were solid at room temperature, demonstrated good printability, and imitated the melting behavior of fat contained in real meat throughout the cooking process.

BackgroundExcessive postoperative portal pressure is associated with post-hepatectomy liver failure and small-for-size syndrome after partial liver transplantation. This study aimed to identify the portal modulation effects of terlipressin on liver regeneration and survival in a porcine model subjected to 90% hepatectomy.MethodsTwenty pigs undergoing 90% hepatectomy were divided into control (n=10) and terlipressin (n=10) groups. Terlipressin 0.5 mg was injected subcutaneously three times a day, from immediately before hepatectomy to 7 days after surgery, for surviving pigs in the terlipressin group. Portal pressure measurement, biochemical analysis, assessment of molecular markers for liver regeneration, and immunohistochemistry were performed in both groups. ResultsThe 7-day survival rate was significantly higher in the terlipressin group than in the control group. Portal pressure in the terlipressin group was lower than that in the control group at 30 min and 1 h after hepatectomy. Total bilirubin level was lower in the terlipressin group than in the control group at 1 h and 6 h after hepatectomy. Proliferating cell nuclear antigen expression was higher in the control group than in the terlipressin group at 6 h after hepatectomy, while the proportion of Ki-67-positive cells was higher in the terlipressin group than in the control group at 7 days after hepatectomy. Endothelin-1 levels reflecting liver injury were lower in the terlipressin group than in the control group at 1 h and 6 h after hepatectomy.Conclusion Terlipressin could optimize liver regeneration and improve survival through rapid and effective portal modulation after extensive hepatectomy.

Improving the antibacterial activity of biodegradable materials is crucial for combatting widespread drug-resistant bacteria and plastic pollutants. In this work, we studied polyaniline (PANI)-functionalized zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) to improve surface charges. A PANI-functionalized ZnO NP surface was prepared using a simple impregnation technique. The PANI functionalization of ZnO successfully increased the positive surface charge of the ZnO NPs. In addition, PANI-functionalized ZnO improved mechanical properties and thermal stability. Besides those properties, the water permeability of the bionanocomposite films was decreased due to their increased hydrophobicity. PANI-functionalized ZnO NPs were applied to thermoplastic starch (TPS) films for physical properties and antibacterial studies using Escherichia coli (E. Coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). The PANI-functionalized ZnO bionanocomposite films exhibited excellent antibacterial activity for both E. Coli (76%) and S. aureus (72%). This result suggests that PANI-functionalized ZnO NPs can improve the antibacterial activity of TPS-based bionanocomposite films.
