202. Ultra-low-power all-optical switching device by use of ytterbium-doped fiber Bragg gratings

Abstract

A new, to our knowledge, scheme of all-optical switching is put forward by use of an all-fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer incorporating ytterbium-doped fiber Bragg gratings. The device utilizes the characteristics of the sharp change of group velocity in transmission with the detuning parameter, [delta] = 2[pi][barn]1/[lambda] - 1/[[lambda].sub.B]). The switching is achieved by changing the Bragg wavelength of the ytterbium-doped arm of the interferometer. A very small shift of the Bragg wavelength can lead to a [pi] phase shift between the two arms, so the power needed to realize complete switching is much lower than that of other schemes. In addition, the device can compensate the dispersion of an optical pulse through the positive group velocity dispersion in transmission provided by the gratings. Abstract

SUMMARYStructural variants (SVs) rearrange large segments of the genome and can have profound consequences for evolution and human diseases. As national biobanks, disease association studies, and clinical genetic testing grow increasingly reliant on genome sequencing, population references such as the Genome Aggregation Database (gnomAD) have become integral for interpreting genetic variation. To date, no large-scale reference maps of SVs exist from high-coverage sequencing comparable to those available for point mutations in protein-coding genes. Here, we constructed a reference atlas of SVs across 14,891 genomes from diverse global populations (54% non-European) as a component of gnomAD. We discovered a rich landscape of 433,371 distinct SVs, including 5,295 multi-breakpoint complex SVs across 11 mutational subclasses, and examples of localized chromosome shattering, as in chromothripsis. The average individual harbored 7,439 SVs, which accounted for 25-29% of all rare protein-truncating events per genome. We found strong correlations between constraint against damaging point mutations and rare SVs that both disrupt and duplicate protein-coding sequence, suggesting intolerance to reciprocal dosage alterations for a subset of tightly regulated genes. We also uncovered modest selection against noncoding SVs in cis-regulatory elements, although selection against protein-truncating SVs was stronger than any effect on noncoding SVs. Finally, we benchmarked carrier rates for medically relevant SVs, finding very large (≥1Mb) rare SVs in 3.8% of genomes (~1:26 individuals) and clinically reportable incidental SVs in 0.18% of genomes (~1:556 individuals). These data have been integrated directly into the gnomAD browser (https://gnomad.broadinstitute.org) and will have broad utility for population genetics, disease association, and diagnostic screening.

Abstract

Fe-(arene)(super +) ions react with halobenzene and dihalobenzene species to give Fe(biphenyl)(super +) in gas phase. Activation of phenyl-halo bands by Fe(super +) involves an oxidative insertion followed by migratory insertion of arene ligand into Fe(super +)-phenyl band. A steric influence is observed with methyl group on the arene ligand.

Abstract

The gas phase reations of Fe(benzyne)+ (FeC6H4+) with alkyl halides, especially with methyl halides, yields a condensation product due to the high bond strength of C-F in the compound CH3F, produces oxidative reaction, and includes an initial C-C insertion. Structure assignments are facilitated by generation of reference ions and use of displacement reactions with p-xylene and mesitylene. Subsequent beta-H transfer and removal of HX occurs in the presence of beta-hydrogen on the alkyl moiety.

Abstract

Development of a second primary tumor （SPT）contributes to a poor prognosis, even if the primary oral tumor （OT） was adequately managed. SPT develops as synchronous or metachronous esophageal cancers in 1-20% patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma （OSCC）. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence and associated factors for SPT of the upper digestive tract in 80 Japanese patients with OT （OSCC, oral intraepithelial neoplasia/carcinoma in situ : OIN/CIS, and verrucous carcinoma : VC）. SPT were detected in 67 patients, 8 with esophageal carcinoma （EC）, 2 with intraepithelial neoplasia （IN）, 3 with gastric carcinoma （GC）, 7 with epithelial dysplasia （ED）, and 47 with other diseases. Malignant tumors （EC, IN, GC）, were detected in 13/80 patients （16.3%）. Univariate analysis showed that Brinkman index （BI） was a candidate associated factor. In the multivariate analysis, BI as a continuous variable was also a significant associated factor. We strongly suggest that endoscopic screening be performed to identify malignancies of the upper digestive tract in patients with OSCC, OIN/CIS and VC.

Abstract

Fourier transform mass spectrometry provided insight into the gas-phase chemistry of Sc(CH3)2+ with alkenes. Ethylene is the only alkene examined that reacts with Sc(CH3)2+ through a multi-centered eta-bond metathesis mechanism to stimulate allylic C-H bonds. The metal (1-butene)isomer is between 10 and 20 kcal/mol less stable than the metal(methyl)(allyl) structure.
