205. Research on sleep status, body mass index, anxiety and depression of college students during the post-pandemic era in Wuhan, China

Abstract

Objective Wuhan was the first Chinese city to be lockdown for the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak in springtime of 2020. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between sleep status, body mass index, anxiety and depression in college students during the post-pandemic era in the universities of Wuhan, China. Methods A total of 1457 college students completed the online surveys from December 25, 2020 to January 16, 2021. Collected data included gender, age, school name, native place, grade, major, body mass index (BMI), the scores of self-assessment lists of sleep (SRSS), Zung self-rating anxiety scale (SAS) and Zung depression self-rating scale (SDS). Results 1445 valid questionnaires (99.18%) were received. Of all the respondents, the prevalence of insomnia, overweight and obesity, anxiety and depression were 32.73%, 19.45%, 15.43% and 62.91%, respectively. Female students were more likely to have insomnia and anxiety than male students. The rate of insomnia, overweight and obesity in postgraduates were higher than undergraduates. Non-medical students were more likely to be overweight and obese than medical students. In addition, insomnia severity was positively correlated to anxiety severity, and BMI was positively correlated to anxiety or depression severity. There was also a positive correlation between the severity of anxiety and depression. Conclusion During the post-pandemic era, insomnia and depression are common problems among college students in Wuhan, suggesting that we should strengthen the sleep education of college students to improve sleeping disorders and psychosomatic health.

Abstract

High performance aluminium-ion (Al-ion) batteries are of wide interest owing to the high theoretical capacity, abundance of Al metal and good safety. Here, we develop a hierarchical VS2@VS4 composed of a VS4 nanorod array in situ grown on VS2 rose-shaped nanosheets that displays a good electrochemical performance. The VS2@VS4 cathode displays a high capacity of 162.7 mA h g−1 after 200 cycles at −10 °C, and keeps 116.5 mA h g−1 after 500 cycles at room temperature. Rate-performance at −10 °C shows a capacity retention rate of 90%, which indicates the potential for engineering high-performance energy-storage composites. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

213. Non-contrast enhanced silent MR angiography to evaluate hemodynamics and morphology of unruptured intracranial aneurysms: a comparative computational fluid dynamics study

Abstract

BackgroundSilent MR angiography (silent MRA) is a new generation of non-contrast enhanced angiography with outstanding advantages in visualizing cerebrovascular lesions and the follow-up after endovascular treatment for intracranial aneurysms (IAs). This study aims to investigate the reliability of silent MRA-based three-dimensional (3D) geometric description and hemodynamic calculation of IAs.Methods19 patients with 23 unruptured IAs, who underwent both silent MRA and 3D rotational angiography (3DRA), were included in this study. Computational fluid dynamics simulations were performed on all patient-specific 3D reconstruction images to compare the morphology and hemodynamics of the two different imaging models for IAs.ResultsSilent MRA models had smaller maximum and perpendicular height (mm), aneurysmal surface area (mm2), and aneurysmal volume (mm3) than 3DRA (p<0.05); the differences of the above parameters between the two models were 9.0±6.2%, 7.7±7.4%, 15.9±13.0%, and 21.4±17.5%, respectively. However, correlation analysis of morphological parameters in various dimensions and model comparison showed good overall consistency in geometrical characteristics between the two models. Moderate coherence was observed between models in time-averaged wall shear stress of aneurysm and parent vessel (TAWSS, PAWSS), aneurysm velocity (AV), parent vessel velocity, and oscillatory shear index (OSI). However, strong correlations were observed among normalized aneurysm wall shear stress (NWSS), low shear area (LSA), inflow concentration index (ICI), and normalized aneurysm velocity (NAV).ConclusionBoth morphological and hemodynamic assessments of IAs for silent MRA are comparable to 3DRA. Additionally, normalized indicators such as NWSS, LSA, ICI, and NAV were better than TAWSS, AV, and OSI in silent MRA-related hemodynamic evaluation.

Abstract

Strongly fluorescent and water soluble bioprobes are in great demand for studying important biological events and processes. The quenching effect of conventional organic dyes caused by aggregation, and the high toxicity of inorganic quantum dots are thorny issues that have constantly obsessed scientists in this area of research. In this work, a large number of tetraphenylethene (TPE) units were successfully attached to N-succinyl-chitosan (NSCS) macromolecular chains to fabricate a novel TPE-NSCS fluorescent bioconjugate, which was strongly emissive in the solid state due to its aggregation-induced emission effect. TPE-NSCS could be solubilized in water over a wide range of pH values. We were pleasantly surprised to see that stained cells still showed a bright fluorescence emission for as many as 30 passages. The water solubility over a wide pH range, ultra long-term retention in cells, and strong fluorescence signals indicate that TPE-NSCS is a promising candidate for various biomedical applications.

222. A new therapeutic effect of fenofibrate in Duchenne muscular dystrophy: The promotion of myostatin degradation.

Abstract

Background and Purpose: Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a degenerative muscle disease with no effective drug treatment. This study investigated the positive effects of fenofibrate on dystrophic muscles. Experimental Approach Myostatin expression in serum and muscle tissue from patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy and mdx mice were tested. Primary myoblasts isolated from mdx mice were challenged with an inflammatory stimulus and treated with fenofibrate. In animal experiments, 6‐week‐old male mdx mice were treated with fenofibrate (100 mg kg‐1) administered orally once per day for 6 weeks. Effects of fenofibrate were evaluated by tests of muscle function plus histology and biochemical analyses of serum. Expression of myostatin, MuRF1, and atrogin‐1 in skeletal muscle was evaluated by western blotting and real‐time PCR. Total and oxidative myosin heavy chain (MHC) were assessed via immunofluorescence. Key Results: Expression of myostatin protein was increased in dystrophic muscle of patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy and mdx mice. Fenofibrate enhanced myofibre differentiation by down‐regulating the expression of myostatin protein but not mRNA in primary myoblasts of mdx mice. Fenofibrate significantly improved muscle function while ameliorating muscle damage in mdx mice. These benefits were accompanied by an anti‐inflammatory effect. Fenofibrate treatment returned myofibre function by inhibiting the expressions of myostatin, MuRF1, and atrogin‐1 protein in the gastrocnemius muscle and diaphragm, while leaving the mRNA level of myostatin unaffected. Conclusions and Implications: Fenofibrate substantially slows muscle dystrophy by promoting the degradation of myostatin protein, which may indicate a new therapeutic focus for patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Abstract

Concrete dam health state has been taken seriously in the field of structural health monitoring. A limitation in the current research is a lack of clear physical significance and reasonable interval division for better reflecting the development trend of the health state. This article introduces a comprehensive evaluation method that provides information on the fusion of different monitoring types and influences of degree weight. The analysis method of variation tendency for concrete dam soundness is proposed based on gray theory. According to the principle of analytic hierarchy process, this article introduces an optimization division method of evaluation grade interval for concrete dam health state. Based on this, a method based on multiple monitoring quantities is established through studies of determination methods for monitoring various quantities of weight, which aimed at evaluating concrete dam health state and solving the problem of comprehensive evaluation for concrete dam health in an effective manner. Abstract

In this study, a new kind of sustained-release silver-loaded chitosan-based sponge was developed by a simple and green method as a long-lasting antimicrobial dressing. The embedded silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were prepared by catechol-conjugated chitosan (CCS). The CCS-coated AgNPs (CCS-AgNPs) were incorporated into the chitosan (CS) matrix through interactions between the catechol and amino groups of CS. Well-dispersed and unaggregated CCS-AgNPs were observed in the composite sponges. Due to an interconnected multi-porous structure, the composite sponges exhibited excellent flexibility and water absorption capability, which is beneficial to remove excess exudates effectively. In silver release tests, CCS-AgNPs/CS showed sustained release, whereas the control group without catechol exhibited burst release. As a bridge to bind AgNPs into the CS matrix, catechol extended the silver release time from 1 day to at least 4 days. The prolonged silver release endows CCS-AgNPs/CS sponges with long-lasting bacteriostatic effects against both Gram positive and negative bacteria. Bacterial growth was completely inhibited for up to 3 days. Meanwhile, the embedded CCS-AgNPs significantly improved the bactericidal effect. More than 99.99% bacteria could be killed by the composite sponges, which completely satisfies antibacterial requirements for wound healing. As a double-edged sword, an excessively high silver content induced cytotoxicity in MC3T3 cells. In general, the CCS-AgNPs/CS sponge with appropriate silver content (0.63 wt%) is considered as a potential candidate for wound healing dressings due to its long-lasting bacteriostatic effect, powerful bactericidal activity, and excellent biocompatibility.

Abstract

Non-nutritive sucking (NNS) is defined as the sucking action that occurs when a finger, pacifier, or other object is placed in the baby's mouth, but there is no nutrient delivered. In addition to providing a sense of safety, NNS even can be regarded as an indicator of infant's central nervous system development. The rich data, such as sucking frequency, the number of cycles, and their amplitude during baby's non-nutritive sucking is important clue for judging the brain development of infants or preterm infants. Nowadays most researchers are collecting NNS data by using some contact devices such as pressure transducers. However, such invasive contact will have a direct impact on the baby's natural sucking behavior, resulting in significant distortion in the collected data. Therefore, we propose a novel contact-less NNS data acquisition and quantification scheme, which leverages the facial landmarks tracking technology to extract the movement signals of baby's jaw from recorded baby's sucking video. Since completion of the sucking action requires a large amount of synchronous coordination and neural integration of the facial muscles and the cranial nerves, the facial muscle movement signals accompanying baby's sucking pacifier can indirectly replace the NNS signal. We have evaluated our method on videos collected from several infants during their NNS behaviors and we have achieved the quantified NNS patterns closely comparable to results from visual inspection as well as contact-based sensor readings.

247. The osteoclastic activity in apical distal region of molar mesial roots affects orthodontic tooth movement and root resorption in rats

Abstract

The utilization of optimal orthodontic force is crucial to prevent undesirable side effects and ensure efficient tooth movement during orthodontic treatment. However, the sensitivity of existing detection techniques is not sufficient, and the criteria for evaluating optimal force have not been yet established. Here, by employing 3D finite element analysis methodology, we found that the apical distal region (A-D region) of mesial roots is particularly sensitive to orthodontic force in rats. Tartrate-resistant acidic phosphatase (TRAP)-positive osteoclasts began accumulating in the A-D region under the force of 40 grams (g), leading to alveolar bone resorption and tooth movement. When the force reached 80 g, TRAP-positive osteoclasts started appearing on the root surface in the A-D region. Additionally, micro-computed tomography revealed a significant root resorption at 80 g. Notably, the A-D region was identified as a major contributor to whole root resorption. It was determined that 40 g is the minimum effective force for tooth movement with minimal side effects according to the analysis of tooth movement, inclination, and hyalinization. These findings suggest that the A-D region with its changes on the root surface is an important consideration and sensitive indicator when evaluating orthodontic forces for a rat model. Collectively, our investigations into this region would aid in offering valuable implications for preventing and minimizing root resorption during patients’ orthodontic treatment.

249. Efficient local search with search space smoothing: a case study of the traveling salesman problem (TSP)

Abstract

Local search is very efficient to solve combinatorial optimization problems. Due to the rugged terrain surface of the search space, it often gets stuck at a locally optimum configuration. In this paper, we give a local search method with a search space smoothing technique. It is capable of smoothing the rugged terrain surface of the search space. Any conventional heuristic search algorithm can be used in conjunction with this smoothing method. In a parameter space, by altering the shape of the objective function, the original problem instance is transformed into a series of gradually simplified problem instances with smoother terrain surfaces. Using an existing local search algorithm, an instance with the simplest terrain structure is solved first, the original problem instance with more complicated terrain structure is solved last, and the solutions of the simplified problem instances are used to guide the search of more complicated ones. A case study of using such technique to solve the traveling salesman problem (TSP) is described. We tested this method with numerous randomly generated TSP instances. We found that it has significantly improved the performance of existing heuristic search algorithms.

250. A constrained approach to multifont chinese character recognition

Abstract

Recognizing multifont, multiple-size Chinese characters was a difficult task in the area of optical character recognition (OCR). In this correspondence, we introduce the constraint graph as a general character representation framework. Each character class is described by a constraint graph model. Sampling points on a character skeleton are taken as nodes in the graph. Connection constraints and position constraints are taken as arcs in the graph. For patterns of the same character class, this model captures both the topological invariance and the geometrical invariance in a general and uniform way. Character recognition is then formulated as a constraint-based optimization problem. A cooperative relaxation matching algorithm that solves this optimization problem is developed. A practical OCR system able to recognize multifont, multiple-size Chinese characters with a satisfactory performance was implemented.
