Abstract

The synthesis, structure, and elementary magnetic and electronic properties are reported for layered compounds of the type Na3-xMIr2O6 and Na3-xM2IrO6, where M is a transition metal from the 3d series (M=Zn, Cu, Ni, Co, Fe and Mn). The rhombohedral structures, in space group R-3m, were determined by refinement of neutron and synchrotron powder diffraction data. No clear evidence for long range 2:1 or 1:2 honeycomb-like M/Ir ordering was found in the neutron powder diffraction patterns except in the case of M = Zn, thus in general the compounds are best designated as sodium deficient {\alpha}-NaFeO2-type phases with formulas Na1-xM1/3Ir2/3O2 or Na1-xM2/3Ir1/3O2. Synchrotron powder diffraction patterns indicate that several of the compounds likely have honeycomb in-plane metal-iridium ordering with disordered stacking of the layers. All the compounds are sodium deficient under our synthetic conditions and are black and insulating. Weiss constants derived from magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate that Na0.62Mn0.61Ir0.39O2, Na0.80Fe2/3Ir1/3O2, Na0.92Ni1/3Ir2/3O2, Na0.86Cu1/3Ir2/3O2, and Na0.89Zn1/3Ir2/3O2 display dominant antiferromagnetic interactions. For Na0.90Co1/3Ir2/3O2 the dominant magnetic interactions at low temperature are ferromagnetic while at high temperatures they are antiferromagnetic; there is also a change in the effective moment. Low temperature specific heat measurements (to 2 K) on Na0.92Ni1/3Ir2/3O2 indicate the presence of a broad magnetic ordering transition. X-ray absorption spectroscopy shows that iridium is at or close to the 4+ oxidation state in all compounds. 23Na nuclear magnetic resonance measurements comparing Na2IrO3 to Na0.92Ni1/3Ir2/3O2 and Na0.89Zn1/3Ir2/3O2 provide strong indications that the electron spins are short-range ordered in the latter two materials. 233. Strain-Triggered Distinct Oxygen Evolution Reaction Pathway in Two-Dimensional Metastable Phase IrO2via CeO2Loading

Abstract

A strain engineering strategy is crucial for designing a high-performance catalyst. However, how to control the strain in metastable phase two-dimensional (2D) materials is technically challenging due to their nanoscale sizes. Here, we report that cerium dioxide (CeO2) is an ideal loading material for tuning the in-plane strain in 2D metastable 1T-phase IrO2(1T-IrO2) via an in situ growth method. Surprisingly, 5% CeO2loaded 1T-IrO2with 8% compressive strain achieves an overpotential of 194 mV at 10 mA cm–2in a three-electrode system. It also retained a high current density of 900 mA cm–2at a cell voltage of 1.8 V for a 400 h stability test in the proton-exchange membrane device. More importantly, the Fourier transform infrared measurements and density functional theory calculation reveal that the CeO2induced strained 1T-IrO2directly undergo the *O–*O radical coupling mechanism for O2generation, totally different from the traditional adsorbate evolution mechanism in pure 1T-IrO2. These findings illustrate the important role of strain engineering in paving up an optimal catalytic pathway in order to achieve robust electrochemical performance.

234. Balance between FeIV–NiIVsynergy and Lattice Oxygen Contribution for Accelerating Water Oxidation

Abstract

Hydrogen obtained from electrochemical water splitting is the most promising clean energy carrier, which is hindered by the sluggish kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Thus, the development of an efficient OER electrocatalyst using nonprecious 3d transition elements is desirable. Multielement synergistic effect and lattice oxygen oxidation are two well-known mechanisms to enhance the OER activity of catalysts. The latter is generally related to the high valence state of 3d transition elements leading to structural destabilization under the OER condition. We have found that Al doping in nanosheet Ni–Fe hydroxide exhibits 2-fold advantage: (1) a strong enhanced OER activity from 277 mV to 238 mV at 10 mA cm–2as the Ni valence state increases from Ni3.58+to Ni3.79+observed from in situX-ray absorption spectra. (2) Operational stability is strengthened, while weakness is expected since the increased NiIVcontent with 3d8L2(L denotes O 2p hole) would lead to structural instability. This contradiction is attributed to a reduced lattice oxygen contribution to the OER upon Al doping, as verified through in situRaman spectroscopy, while the enhanced OER activity is interpreted as an enormous gain in exchange energy of FeIV–NiIV, facilitated by their intersite hopping. This study reveals a mechanism of Fe–Ni synergy effect to enhance OER activity and simultaneously to strengthen operational stability by suppressing the contribution of lattice oxygen.

Abstract

Full concentration gradient lithium‐rich layered oxides are catching lots of interest as the next generation cathode for lithium‐ion batteries due to their high discharge voltage, reduced voltage decay and enhanced rate performance, whereas the high lithium residues on its surface impairs the structure stability and long‐term cycle performance. Herein, a facile multifunctional surface modification method is implemented to eliminate surface lithium residues of full concentration gradient lithium‐rich layered oxides by a wet chemistry reaction with tetrabutyl titanate and the post‐annealing process. It realizes not only a stable Li2TiO3 coating layer with 3D diffusion channels for fast Li+ ions transfer, but also dopes partial Ti4+ ions into the sub‐surface region of full concentration gradient lithium‐rich layered oxides to further strengthen its crystal structure. Consequently, the modified full concentration gradient lithium‐rich layered oxides exhibit improved structure stability, elevated thermal stability with decomposition temperature from 289.57 °C to 321.72 °C, and enhanced cycle performance (205.1 mAh g−1 after 150 cycles) with slowed voltage drop (1.67 mV per cycle). This work proposes a facile and integrated modification method to enhance the comprehensive performance of full concentration gradient lithium‐rich layered oxides, which can facilitate its practical application for developing higher energy density lithium‐ion batteries. 238. Pd single atoms cooperate with S vacancies in ZnIn2S4 nanosheets for photocatalytic pure-water splitting.

Abstract

Photocatalytic water splitting has emerged as a new frontier for converting solar energy to green H2 and value-added chemicals. Nevertheless, great challenges still remain for developing efficient photocatalysts for pure water splitting without sacrificial agents. In this work, we demonstrate that doping hexagonal ZnIn2S4 (ZIS) with Pd single atoms (Pd0.03/ZIS) can serve as a highly efficient photocatalyst for pure water splitting to simultaneously produce H2 and H2O2 without any sacrificial agents. Results from aberration-corrected high-angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy, X-ray fine spectroscopy, in-situ electron paramagnetic resonance and diffuse Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy reveal that doping ZIS with Pd single atoms facilitates the formation of S vacancies (Sv), where the photogenerated electrons can transfer to Pd single atoms, as a result of enhanced separation of electron-hole pairs and improved photocatalytic performance. Impressively, Pd0.03/ZIS displays a stoichiometric ratio of H2 and H2O2 with the productivity of 1,037.9 and 1,021.4 μmol g −1 h −1, respectively, which has largely outperformed pure ZIS and other reported catalysts for pure water splitting. This work provides an efficient photocatalyst for water splitting to produce H2 and H2O2, which may attract rapid interest in materials science, chemistry, and heterogeneous catalysis.
