Various failures of casting connector were discussed here. In order to analyze the failure reasons of different samples, a series of tests were carried out, such as macro check, metallographic observation and X-ray penetration method. It turned out that the material defect, casting defect and improper heat process are assigned to be the main reason, respectively. In addition, the corresponding countermeasures were also proposed to improve the quality of power grid equipments.

A mathematical model to study currents in closure gap of a large coastal reclamation project was developed and solved by finite volume method basing on the strict quantity conservation characters. The unstructured triangular meshes were used to meet the complex boundaries and the local mesh refinement approach was adopted near the closure gap area so as to guarantee the requirements of veracity and computational precision. The flow field distribution and the maximum flow velocity were analyzed under different closure gap width in the tidal currents and the appropriate closure gap width was determined. It was indicated that combining the closure gap and overflow was necessary for the closure construction in offshore dyke engineering. The scheme from the simulation had been successfully applied in closure gap construction. The approach could be applied for power flow analysis to determinate the scheme for closure construction of larger areas in the reclamation project.

Background: Baicalein is an active compound extracted from the roots of Scutellaria baicalensis georgi, which is widely and traditionally used in the anticancer therapy. Notch signaling pathway is usually abnormally activated in kinds of human cancers. The aim of the present study is to investigate the antitumor effects of baicalein in human cervical cancer and explore whether baicalein treatment affects notch signaling pathway in human cervical cancers. Materials and Methods: Cervical cancer cells were treated with increasing concentrations of baicalein for 24, 48, and 72 h, respectively. 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay was used to determine cell viability of cervical cancer cells. The apoptosis rate was determined by FACS assay. Furthermore, the molecular mechanism was investigated. The expression levels of Notch 1, Notch 2, Notch 3, hairy enhancer of split-1 (Hes-1), and Hes-5 were determined by western blotting analysis. Results: MTT assay results revealed that baicalein inhibited cell proliferation of HeLa cells and SiHa cells in a time- and dose-dependent manner. The data from FACS assay demonstrated that baicalein-induced cell apoptosis of cervical cancer cells at the final concentration of 100 μM for 24 h. Furthermore, baicalein treatment downregulated Notch 1/Hes-1, Hes-5 signaling pathway, and there was no obvious change on the expression of Notch 2 and Notch 3. Conclusion: Baicalein inhibited the proliferation of human cervical cancer cells via Notch 1/Hes signaling Pathway. The study would provide some new clues in the clinical therapy of human cervical cancers.

The annual water level regulating of the Three Gorges Reservoir prolonged the submerged duration (from 2 to 8 months) and resulted in the reversal of natural flood rhythms (winter submerged). These changes might alter plant community characteristics in the water level fluctuation zone (WLFZ). The aim of this study was to determine the plant community characteristics in the WLFZ and their responses to the environmental factors (i.e., annual hydrological regulation, topographic characteristics, soil physical properties and soil nutrients). The height, coverage, frequency and biomass of each plant species and the soil properties at each elevation zone (150, 155, 160, 165 and 170 m) were measured from March to September in 2010. Univariate two-factor analysis and redundancy analysis (RDA) were used to analyze the spatial and temporal variations of the community characteristics and identify the key environmental factors influencing vegetation. We found that 93.2 % of the species analysed were terrestrial vascular plants. Annual herbs made up the highest percentage of life forms at each altitude. The differences in the species number per square metre, the Shannon-Wiener diversity index and the biomass of vegetation demonstrated statistical significance with respect to sampling time but not elevation. The most dominant species at altitudes of 150, 155, 160, 165 and 170 m were Cynodon dactylon, Cyperus rotundus, Digitaria sanguinalis, Setaria viridis and Daucus carota, respectively. The concentrations of soil nutrients appeared to be the lowest at an altitude of 150 m, although the differences with respect to elevation were not significant. The results of the RDA indicated that the key factors that influenced the species composition of vegetation were elevation, slope, pH and the concentration of soil available phosphorus.
