205. Sustaining a Multitiered System of Supports for English Learners in Rural Community Elementary Schools

- Abstract
A 5-year model demonstration project designed to improve literacy instruction and special education referrals for English learners (ELs) in grades K-3 in three rural community elementary schools was completed with specific attention to sustainability 1 year after implementation. The model, which was developed and implemented through a university-school district collaborative partnership, incorporated sustainability as a critical component. Findings show that the sustainability component (a) embedded into project development, (b) periodically revisited during project implementation, and (c) personalized by participating schools developing their own sustainability plans proved to be a successful approach to maintaining select literacy best practices and improved referrals of ELs. A minimum of 80% of classroom teacher participants reported 1 year after project implementation that key aspects of the project continued to be beneficial or very beneficial for delivering their classroom instruction to ELs. Each of the five multitiered system of supports (MTSS) for EL model components was somewhat addressed, with several being mostly addressed 1 year after implementation in all three elementary schools. Also, the culturally and linguistically responsive referral was maintained. Project sustainability findings are shared and discussed along with recommendations for educators to apply in their MTSS models in rural elementary schools with high populations of ELs with and without disabilities.

206. Achievement Emotions in Mathematics: Design and Evidence of Validity of a Self-Report Scale

- Abstract
The Inventory of Emotions Experienced by Adolescents when Solving Mathematical Tasks (INETAM, for its acronym in Spanish), measures four influential emotions related to Math performance: Enthusiasm, Frustration, Enjoyment, and Boredom. Content validity, construct validation and item calibration analyses were performed to obtain evidence of its validity, using a sample of 448 adolescents enrolled in ninth grade. Factor analysis showed adequate reliability coefficients and fit indices. Calibration analysis showed that the items are highly informative and discriminate between response levels. Regression analysis indicated that emotions are predictors of math achievement. INETAM is solid psychometrically, suitable for measuring academic emotions of adolescents, and can contribute to improve our understanding of their influence on academic achievement in mathematics.

While different language models are ubiquitous in NLP, it is hard to contrast their outputs and identify which contexts one can handle better than the other. To address this question, we introduce LMdiff, a tool that visually compares probability distributions of two models that differ, e.g., through finetuning, distillation, or simply training with different parameter sizes. LMdiff allows the generation of hypotheses about model behavior by investigating text instances token by token and further assists in choosing these interesting text instances by identifying the most interesting phrases from large corpora. 210. The Population of Interstellar Objects Detectable with the LSST and Accessible for $\textit{In Situ}$ Rendezvous with Various Mission Designs

The recently discovered population of interstellar objects presents us with the opportunity to characterize material from extrasolar planetary and stellar systems up close. The forthcoming Vera C. Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) will provide an unprecedented increase in sensitivity to these objects compared to the capabilities of currently operational observational facilities. We generate a synthetic population of `Oumuamua-like objects drawn from their galactic kinematics, and identify the distribution of impact parameters, eccentricities, hyperbolic velocities and sky locations of objects detectable with the LSST, assuming no cometary activity. This population is characterized by a clustering of trajectories in the direction of the solar apex and anti-apex, centered at orbital inclinations of $\sim90^\circ$. We identify the ecliptic or solar apex as the optimal sky locations to search for future interstellar objects as a function of survey limiting magnitude. Moreover, we identify the trajectories of detectable objects that will be reachable for \textit{in-situ} rendezvous with a dedicated mission with the capabilities of the forthcoming \textit{Comet Interceptor} or proposed \textit{Bridge} concept. By scaling our fractional population statistics with the inferred spatial number density, we estimate that the LSST will detect of order $\sim 15$ interstellar objects over the course of its $\sim10$ year observational campaign. Furthermore, we find that there should be $\sim1-3$ and $\sim0.0007-0.001$ reachable targets for missions with propulsion capabilities comparable to \textit{Bridge} and \textit{Comet Interceptor}, respectively. We examine various attributes of these pit structures in New Horizons data sets, revealing their length, aspect ratios, and orientation properties; we also study their interior reflectivities, colors, and compositions, and compare these attributes to some other relevant regions on Pluto. Following Berni Alder [1] and Francis Ree [2], Douglas Henderson was the third of Bill's California coworkers from the 1960s to die in 2020. Motivated by Doug's death we undertook better to understand Lyapunov instability and the breaking of time symmetry in continuum and atomistic simulations. Here we have chosen to extend our explorations of an interesting pair of nonequilibrium systems, the steady shockwave and the unsteady rarefaction wave. We eliminate the need for boundary potentials by simulating the collisions of pairs of mirror-images projectiles. The resulting shock and rarefaction structures are respectively the results of the compression and the expansion of simple fluids. Shockwaves resulting from compression have a steady structure while the rarefaction fans resulting from free expansions continually broaden. We model these processes using classical molecular dynamics and Eulerian fluid mechanics in two dimensions. Although molecular dynamics is time-reversible the reversed simulation of a steady shockwave compression soon results in an unsteady rarefaction fan, violating the microscopic time symmetry of the motion equations but in agreement with the predictions of macroscopic Navier-Stokes fluid mechanics. This memoir honors the late Berni Julian Alder, who inspired both of us with his pioneering development of molecular dynamics. Berni's work with Tom Wainwright, described in the 1959 Scientific American[1], brought Bill to interview at Livermore in 1962. Hired by Berni, Bill enjoyed over 40 years' research at the Laboratory. Berni, along with Edward Teller, founded UC's Department of Applied Science in 1963. Their motivation was to attract bright students to use the laboratory's unparalleled research facilities. In 1972 Carol was offered a joint LLNL employee-DAS student appointment at Livermore. Bill, thanks to Berni's efforts, was already a Professor at DAS. Carol became one of Bill's best students. Berni's influence was directly responsible for our physics collaboration and our marriage in 1989. The present work is devoted to two early interests of Berni's, irreversibility and shockwaves. Berni and Tom studied the irreversibility of Boltzmann's "H function" in the early 1950s[2]. Berni called shockwaves the "most irreversible" of hydrodynamic processes[3]. Just this past summer, in simulating shockwaves with time-reversible classical mechanics, we found that reversed Runge-Kutta shockwave simulations yielded nonsteady rarefaction waves, not shocks. Intrigued by this unexpected result we studied the exponential Lyapunov instabilities in both wave types. Besides the Runge-Kutta and Leapfrog algorithms, we developed a precisely-reversible manybody algorithm based on trajectory storing, just changing the velocities' signs to generate the reversed trajectories. Both shocks and rarefactions were precisely reversed. Separate simulations, forward and reversed, provide interesting examples of the Lyapunov-unstable symmetry-breaking models supporting the Second Law of Thermodynamics. This is our current research perspective on models providing insight into statistical mechanics. It is necessarily personal, emphasizing our own interest in simulation as it developed from the National Laboratories' work to the worldwide explosion of computation of today. We contrast the past and present in atomistic simulations, emphasizing those simple models which best achieve reproducibility and promote understanding. Few-body models with pair forces have led to today's "realistic" simulations with billions of atoms and molecules. Rapid advances in computer technology have led to change. Theoretical formalisms have largely been replaced by simulations incorporating ingenious algorithm development. We choose to study particularly simple, yet relevant, models directed toward understanding general principles. Simplicity remains a worthy goal, as does relevance. We discuss hard-particle virial series, melting, thermostatted oscillators with and without heat conduction, chaotic dynamics, fractals, the connection of Lyapunov spectra to thermodynamics, and finally simple linear maps. Deterministic and time-reversible nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations typically generate "fractal" [ fractional-dimensional ] phase-space distributions. Because these distributions and their time-reversed twins have zero phase volume, stable attractors "forward in time" and unstable (unobservable) repellors when reversed, these simulations are consistent with the Second Law of Thermodynamics. These same reversibility and stability properties can also be found in compressible Baker Maps, or in their equivalent random walks, motivating their careful study. We illustrate these ideas with three examples: a Cantor-Set Map and two linear compressible Baker Maps, N2$(q,p)$ and N3$(q,p)$. Mate choice informed by the immune genes of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) may provide fitness benefits including offspring with increased immunocompetence. Olfactory cues are considered the primary mechanism organisms use to evaluate the MHC of potential mates, yet this idea has received limited attention in birds. Motivated by a finding of MHC-dependent mate choice in the Leach's storm-petrel (Oceanodroma leucorhoa), we examined whether the chemical profiles of this highly scented seabird contain information about MHC genes. Whereas previous studies in birds examined non-volatile compounds, we used gas chromatography-mass spectrometry to measure the volatile compounds emitted from feathers that potentially serve as olfactory infochemicals about MHC and coupled this with locus-specific genotyping of MHC IIB genes. We found that feather chemicals reflected individual MHC diversity through interactions with sex and breeding status. Furthermore, similarity in MHC genotype was correlated with similarity in chemical profiles within female-female and male-female dyads. We provide the first evidence that volatile chemicals from bird feathers can encode information about the MHC. Our findings suggest that olfaction likely aids MHC-based mate choice in this species and highlight a role for chemicals in mediating genetic mate choice in birds where this mode of communication has been largely overlooked.

239. Building a Life Course Intervention Research Framework.

OBJECTIVES: To report on first steps toward building a Life Course Intervention Research Framework (LCIRF) to guide researchers studying interventions to improve lifelong health. METHODS: The Life Course Intervention Research Network, a collaborative national network of >75 researchers, service providers, community representatives and thought leaders, participated in an iterative review process. Building on the revised Medical Research Council Guidance for Developing and Evaluating Complex Interventions, they identified 12 additional key models with features for inclusion in the LCIRF, then incorporated the 12 characteristics identified by the Life Course Intervention Research Network as actionable features of Life Course Interventions to produce the new LCIRF. RESULTS: The LCIRF sets out a detailed step-wise approach to intervention development: (1) conceptualization and planning, (2) design, (3) implementation, (4) evaluation, and (5) spreading and scaling of interventions. Each step is infused with life course intervention characteristics including a focus on (1) collaborative codesign (2) health optimization, (3) supporting emerging health development capabilities (4) strategic timing, (5) multilevel approaches, and (6) health equity. Key features include a detailed transdisciplinary knowledge synthesis to inform intervention development; formation of strong partnerships with family, community, and youth representatives in intervention codesign; a means of testing the impact of each intervention on biobehavioral processes underlying emerging health trajectories; and close attention to intervention context. CONCLUSIONS: This first iteration of the LCIRF has been largely expert driven. Next steps will involve widespread partner engagement in framework refinement and further development. Implementation will require changes to the way intervention studies are organized and funded.

OBJECTIVES: To develop an initial list of characteristics of life course interventions to inform the emerging discipline of life course intervention research. METHODS: The Life Course Intervention Research Network, a collaborative national network of >75 researchers, service providers, community representatives, and thought leaders, considered the principles, characteristics, and utility of life course interventions. After an in-person launch meeting in 2019, the steering committee collaboratively and iteratively developed a list of life course intervention characteristics, incorporating a modified Delphi review process. RESULTS: The Life Course Intervention Research Network identified 12 characteristics of life course interventions. These interventions (1) are aimed at optimizing health trajectories; (2) are developmentally focused, (3) longitudinally focused, and (4) strategically timed; and are (5) designed to address multiple levels of the ecosystem where children are born, live, learn, and grow and (6) vertically, horizontally, and longitudinally integrated to produce a seamless, forward-leaning, health optimizing system. Interventions are designed to (7) support emerging health development capabilities; are (8) collaboratively codesigned by transdisciplinary research teams, including stakeholders; and incorporate (9) family-centered, (10) strengths-based, and (11) antiracist approaches with (12) a focus on health equity. CONCLUSIONS: The intention for this list of characteristics of life course interventions is to provide a starting point for wider discussion and to guide research development. Incorporation of these characteristics into intervention designs may improve emerging health trajectories and move critical developmental processes and pathways back on track, even optimizing them to prevent or reduce adverse outcomes.

BackgroundRight ventricular outflow tract (RVOT) is a common source of ventricular tachycardia, which often requires ablation. However, the mechanisms underlying the RVOT's unique arrhythmia susceptibility remain poorly understood due to lack of detailed electrophysiological and molecular studies of the human RVOT.MethodsWe conducted optical mapping studies in 16 nondiseased donor human RVOT preparations subjected to pharmacologically induced adrenergic and cholinergic stimulation to evaluate susceptibility to arrhythmias and characterize arrhythmia dynamics.ResultsWe found that under control conditions, RVOT has shorter action potential duration at 80% repolarization relative to the right ventricular apical region. Treatment with isoproterenol (100 nM) shortened action potential duration at 80% repolarization and increased incidence of premature ventricular contractions (P=0.003), whereas acetylcholine (100 μM) stimulation alone had no effect on action potential duration at 80% repolarization or premature ventricular contractions. However, acetylcholine treatment after isoproterenol stimulation reduced the incidence of premature ventricular contractions (P=0.034) and partially reversed action potential duration at 80% repolarization shortening (P=0.029). Immunolabeling of RVOT (n=4) confirmed the presence of cholinergic marker VAChT (vesicular acetylcholine transporter) in the region. Rapid pacing revealed RVOT susceptibility to both concordant and discordant alternans. Investigation into transmural arrhythmia dynamics showed that arrhythmia wave fronts and phase singularities (rotors) were relatively more organized in the endocardium than in the epicardium (P=0.006). Moreover, there was a weak but positive spatiotemporal autocorrelation between epicardial and endocardial arrhythmic wave fronts and rotors. Transcriptome analysis (n=10 hearts) suggests a trend that MAPK (mitogen-activated protein kinase) signaling, calcium signaling, and cGMP-PKG (protein kinase G) signaling are among the pathways that may be enriched in the male RVOT, whereas pathways of neurodegeneration may be enriched in the female RVOT.ConclusionsHuman RVOT electrophysiology is characterized by shorter action potential duration relative to the right ventricular apical region. Cholinergic right ventricular stimulation attenuates the arrhythmogenic effects of adrenergic stimulation, including increase in frequency of premature ventricular contractions and shortening of wavelength. Right ventricular arrhythmia is characterized by positive spatial-temporal autocorrelation between epicardial-endocardial arrhythmic wave fronts and rotors that are relatively more organized in the endocardium.

The current paper presents a new approach to multilinear dynamical systems analysis and control. The approach is based upon recent developments in tensor decompositions and a newly defined algebra of circulants. In particular, it is shown that under the right tensor multiplication operator, a third order tensor can be written as a product of third order tensors that is analogous to a traditional matrix eigenvalue decomposition where the "eigenvectors" become eigenmatrices and the "eigenvalues" become eigen-tuples. This new development allows for a proper tensor eigenvalue decomposition to be defined and has natural extension to linear systems theory through a \textit{tensor-exponential}. Through this framework we extend many of traditional techniques used in linear system theory to their multilinear counterpart.

Saliency methods -- techniques to identify the importance of input features on a model's output -- are a common step in understanding neural network behavior. However, interpreting saliency requires tedious manual inspection to identify and aggregate patterns in model behavior, resulting in ad hoc or cherry-picked analysis. To address these concerns, we present Shared Interest: metrics for comparing model reasoning (via saliency) to human reasoning (via ground truth annotations). By providing quantitative descriptors, Shared Interest enables ranking, sorting, and aggregating inputs, thereby facilitating large-scale systematic analysis of model behavior. We use Shared Interest to identify eight recurring patterns in model behavior, such as cases where contextual features or a subset of ground truth features are most important to the model. Working with representative real-world users, we show how Shared Interest can be used to decide if a model is trustworthy, uncover issues missed in manual analyses, and enable interactive probing., Comment: 17 pages, 10 figures. Storytelling is an open-ended task that entails creative thinking and requires a constant flow of ideas. Natural language generation (NLG) for storytelling is especially challenging because it requires the generated text to follow an overall theme while remaining creative and diverse to engage the reader. In this work, we introduce a system and a web-based demo, FairyTailor, for human-in-the-loop visual story co-creation. Users can create a cohesive children's fairytale by weaving generated texts and retrieved images with their input. FairyTailor adds another modality and modifies the text generation process to produce a coherent and creative sequence of text and images. To our knowledge, this is the first dynamic tool for multimodal story generation that allows interactive co-formation of both texts and images. 250. Family Engagement at the Systems Level: A Framework for Action

While family engagement at the individual level of health care, such as families partnering with providers in decision-making about health care for an individual child has been well studied, family engagement in systems-level activities (e.g., participation in advisory and other decision-making groups, or creation and revision of policies) that impact the health services families and children receive has not. This note from the field presents a framework that describes the information and supports that help families partner with professionals and contribute to systems-level activities. Without attention to these components of family engagement, family presence and participation may be only token. We engaged an expert Family/Professional Workgroup whose members represented key constituencies and diverse geography, race/ethnicity, and areas of expertise; conducted a review of peer-reviewed publications and grey literature; and conducted a series of key informant interviews to identify best practices for supporting meaningful family engagement at the systems level. Based on an analysis of the findings, the authors identified four action-oriented domains of family engagement and key criteria that support and strengthen meaningful family engagement in systems-level initiatives.
