Tabitha Kenlon's engagingly written account of the history of conduct literature, I Conduct Books and the History of the Ideal Woman, i provides an in-depth exploration of six centuries worth of conduct books, etiquette guides and self-help books. The final chapter also points to the future of the conduct genre through self-help guides which move away from controlling women's behaviour and towards a society which celebrates individuality. Kenlon's text introduces readers to the long-lasting genre of conduct literature through a discussion of a plethora of printed texts by both male and female authors. [Extracted from the article]

Book review: SECCO, Lincoln. A batalha dos livros. Formação da esquerda no Brasil. Cotia: Ateliê Editorial, 2017

The brief foray proposed here into the archives of French ethnologist, technologist and prehistorian André Leroi-Gourhan (1911–1986) focusses on the proof-correcting process of the very last page of his doctoral thesis, published in 1946. The changing state of these proofs and the additions he penned to them, as made perceptible in the illustrations provided, serves me to highlight three interconnected aspects of history-of-archaeology investigations: the interest of archives-based biographical studies, the links between the history and the theory of archaeology, and, last but not least, the material and ‘intellectual technologies’ involved in the production of knowledge. Résumé La brève excursion proposée ici dans les archives de l’ethnologue, technologue et préhistorien André Leroi-Gourhan (1911–1986) aborde spécifiquement la correction des épreuves de la toute dernière page de sa thèse de doctorat, publiée en 1946. The 21st century has witnessed the explosion of digital contents known as the audioboom (podcasts, audiobooks). Literary scholars raise questions about the literary experience related to the fourth format in the history of books, such as the inquiry about the effects of remediation from the written to the aural formats. This article addresses some of the issues around the audiobooks and their place in the literary world, while putting forward arguments against the role of traditional gatekeepers. The reflection, dedicated to the analysis from a gender perspective of three aspects of the disciplines of the book (profession, semantic cataloging and history of the book), is part of the broader context of critical librarianship, and intends to approach these issues with the awareness that it is an unavoidably unsystematic introduction due to the complexity and breadth of the discussion. However, it was deemed necessary to open a debate or at least ask the question because in Italy these aspects have not yet been dealt with systematically and organically and are discussed marginally and in conflict, without being able to arrive at a synthesis of meaning that accepts and re-elaborate the social processes that have been going on for years and the requests coming from the communities that express a way of being and feeling complementary to the canonical one of the masculine. Using Favret-Saada’s methodological reflections on affectation, in this article, I will provide an analytical description of collectivization practices in the aboriginal community of San Miguel de Colorados (Northwest Argentina) and their relationship with other forms of collective management. The records I am going to comment on are based on my ethnographic experience as a researcher and co-director of a community project to publish a book on the history of Colorados. This led me and the families of the community to organize the work and decisions in very different ways, giving rise to a series of complaints, claims, and disagreements that have impacted the development of the project in many different ways. Following Favret-Saada’s conceptualizations of the importance of involuntary and non-representational communication in social praxis —or what Stengers calls the pragmatic dimension—, I describe how Coloradans and I are mutually, but differentially, affected by the book project. The idea is to explain the relational positions that mobilize these affectations, to demonstrate that this involuntary communication is rooted in a pragmatic misunderstanding; a misunderstanding between a definition of collective action as the result of representative consensus and another in which community decisions are formed through the temporary —and often conflictive— alignment of families and their points of view. This analysis is intended to contribute to anthropological reflection in collaborative contexts by considering the implications of native theories and practices of collective organization. This article centres on the emblem book Jesus en de Ziel, Een Geestelycke Spiegel voor 't Gemoed , first published in Amsterdam in 1678, with texts and images composed by Jan Luyken. From the time of its first publication, the book was part of the literary devotional life of the Dutch Republic, undergoing numerous editions and reprints, at least until the final decades of the eighteenth century. Using the information provided by Book Sales Catalogues, the article explores different modes in which Jesus en de Ziel was consumed, paying attention to the material conditions under which the object was provided and acquired by the consumer. The emblem book, as a religious object, was constantly reconfigured and mobilized by their manufacturers, their providers, and by the consumers themselves. I argue that these patterns of consumption, elucidated by the catalogues, can make a fundamental contribution for historical and cultural research on religious practices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article examines how early herbals were produced and illustrated, with a focus on the relationship between the design of the page and that of the production system. It shows that most surviving ancient illustrated herbals were illustrated prior to the copying of the text and thereby privileged the transfer of visual over verbal content. Over the course of the sixth century, however, we find that illustrated herbals were increasingly illustrated after the copying of text. The article suggests that this shift in production may have been a result of the consolidation of book production within monastic contexts. Still, even after the rise of text-first illustration, herbals continue to bear traces of the picture-first system in the close physical relationship between word and image. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Based on a dataset of unparalleled extent containing nearly 1500 books, this article for the first time offers an analysis of the War Books Boom that combines the qualitative and quantitative. The Boom did not simply rise and fall; an early peak in publication in 1928 was followed by a dip in 1929, as huge successes like R.C. Sherriff's Journey's End and Erich Maria Remarque's Im Westen Nichts Neues (All Quiet on the Western Front) dominated the market and were successful in the subsequent two years in a variety of media. The major peak, far exceeding that of 1928, was in 1930, as both publication and commentary trends spiked. The Boom was understood in commentary as such at the time, and the surrounding discourse saw this moment as a battle for the enduring memory of the conflict between the brutal realism of works such as Remarque's, his followers and imitators, and a more conservative focus on courage, fortitude and honour. We enrich the existing scholarly understanding of the cultural history of the War Books Boom, drawing on our dataset and the interwar journalism collected in the British Newspaper Archive, and situating these findings among existing scholarship. Taking as starting points Sherriff's and Remarque's texts, we identify key publication trends, drawing particular attention to the dominance by publication numbers of non-fiction texts, particularly in life-writing, history and regimental history. Over the course of history, the book and its environment have been in permanent transformation, undergoing changes that have affected its format, textual arrangement, form of reading, and production and distribution systems, as well as its social consideration as an instrument for the transmission of knowledge. One of the greatest changes has taken place in the 21st century with the emergence of digital formats throughout the publishing value chain. If in previous eras the transformations had affected one or other of the mentioned elements, the digital revolution has impacted on all of them simultaneously, as it has modified the ways in which works are created, produced, distributed, and consumed. Also, it has introduced for the first time an element of intermediation between the reader and reading: the device, which, in its different varieties, implies an element of additional complexity. At the present time, and after almost two decades, we can see the advances and setbacks that have occurred on this journey; the achievements and shortcomings from the publishing point of view, in which a strengthening of the big companies can be appreciated; and the emergence of a system of self-publishing that represents a rupture with traditional systems. From the point of view of authorship, the value of the brand, of charisma and prestige, has been emphasised, while a movement of creation is taking place on the fringes of the system that renounces posterity and recognition in favour of visibility. This approach to authorship is also subject to the influx and influence of social networks with their positive effects, in the form of projection, and negative ones, in the form of new ways of censure. Finally, in terms of reading, there is an ambivalent route that runs between the paths of a very strong tradition, linked to the printed book, and digital reading, established from the point of view of practices, but in its more conservative and imitative side with respect to analogue formats; in the digital sphere, new proposals and more innovative initiatives which are attracting the attention of growing but still minority sectors of society are emerging. The article centers on a handwritten account of the stillbirth of conjoined twins in eighteenth-century Mexico stitched into a book about natural history. Finding things in books as part of an accidental process of discovery in the present does not equal random acts by users in the past. Inserting documents and prints of various kinds into books represented for historical actors a distinct kind of archival practice that combined careful observation, deliberation, and a certain measure of dexterity to manipulate the physicality of a book. Examples of records and objects found in other titles from the same time period and region help to contextualize the way people used books and how they stored memories, as well as what we as researchers can learn when critically analyzing the materiality of print. This paper argues that the primary purpose of the blood prohibition in the Hebrew Bible is not to reflect ethical sensitivity toward animals; rather, it is part of an anthropocentric ideology that promotes both human ascendancy over, and kinship with, animals. The blood prohibition places a high value on animal life, but it does this to justify, and socially authorize, the eating of animals while simultaneously alleviating the deeply embedded human guilt over killing them. To display this, I contrast how animals and blood function in the Priestly texts of the Hebrew Bible versus the non-Priestly texts—focusing on the primeval history of Genesis and the book of Leviticus. Most tellingly, the non-Priestly material in the primeval history contains no blood prohibition and thus does not contain the profound ambivalence toward animals and eating them that the Priestly material does. The National Negro Publishers Association (NNPA) Commission to West Africa in 1944–1945 represents a major episode in the history of World War II Africa, as well as in American–West Africa relations. Three African American reporters toured the Gold Coast, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, Liberia, and the Congo between November 1944 and February 1945, before returning to Washington, DC to report to President Roosevelt. They documented their tour in the pages of the Baltimore Afro-American, the Chicago Defender, and the Norfolk Journal and Guide. Their Americans' visit had a significant impact in wartime West Africa and was widely documented in the African press. This article examines the NNPA tour geographically, before analyzing American reporters' interactions with West Africans, and assessing African responses to the tour. Drawing on both African American and West African newspapers, it situates the NNPA tour within the history of World War II West Africa, and in terms of African print culture. It argues that the NNPA tour became the focus of West African hopes for future political, economic, and intellectual relations with African Americans, while revealing how the NNPA reporters engaged African audiences during their tour. At the end of the twentieth century, increased access to certain technologies and processes, such as 3D scanning, computer-aided design, rapid fabrication and microcircuitry, enabled consumers to become creators of material design. These activities, which collectively came to be known as making, extended across both public and private sectors, including the study of the book. This paper offers an extended discourse on the full range of activities comprising the bibliographical maker movement, which in recent years has coalesced around the idea that maker culture may be employed to enhance our understanding of not only the history but also the future of the book. The application of these new technologies toward critical book studies has proceeded from the practice-based approach to research and instruction first begun under the auspices of the bibliographical press movement in the mid-twentieth century. In keeping with this earlier work, biblio-making is predicated upon the idea that certain kinds of knowledge are best gained through personal experience and experimentation. This article will first outline the benefits of applying 3D technologies to the goals of book history before locating and describing the activities of participating individuals and institutions within three broad categories: holistic, 3D digitisation; recovering historical tools and processes; and creative experiments in book design. As the article demonstrates, the strength and potential of the bibliographical maker movement lies in its widening community of practice and that, by virtue of its being an open-access network of constituents, it is now poised to make a significant and lasting contribution to the study of the book. This case study details the techniques, strategies, and workflow used by Sam Houston State University's (SHSU) Newton Gresham Library in preparing materials to submit and claim with the Texas A&M University System Joint Library Facility (JLF). The article provides an overview of JLF history and operations, and details the critical factors leading to SHSU removing large numbers of print materials from its collection. Additionally, the article discusses why SHSU elected to leverage the services offered by JLF, examines challenges encountered, and reviews techniques employed to enhance the pre-check processing required to participate in JLF's shared collection. This article explores the printed editions of Joseph Gikatilla's Sha'arei Orah in the broader context of kabbalistic knowledge in early modern East-Central Europe. Following its first Italian editions, the book was reprinted several times. The Kraków 1600 edition with commentary by Matityah Delacrut presented Sha'arei Orah as a kabbalistic lexicon and study aid. The Offenbach 1715 edition included additional notes that linked Sha'arei Orah to the Safedian Kabbalah of Moses Cordovero and Isaac Luria. Finally, the several editions published in Żółkiew exemplify the diversification of Kabbalah in the contentious religious climate of eighteenth-century Eastern Europe. Each printing reflects a discrete historical context, yet Sha'arei Orah was consistently seen as an introductory guide to Kabbalah. Threading together these unique moments reveals one trajectory of the history of Kabbalah, as printing brought esoteric texts to new generations of readers with new concerns and agendas. The book "El infinito en un junco" by Irene Vallejo has been received with joy and admiration by common readers, writers, editors, booksellers, and literature specialists. It is a journey through the history of books, from their production in different materials over almost thirty centuries, to their value as a treasure in antiquity. The author narrates the history of the invention of books from ancient times to the present, combining elements of essay and novel, and making connections with current references. The study of type specimens is a specific field of diachronic knowledge regarding print culture, book history, publishing design, and graphic technology. It has a long history in Europe and North America, including classic studies that have laid the foundations for the correct cataloguing and custody of typographic materials, the production of revivals, and the generation of important type libraries. However, this field has been explored very little in Latin America. To date, we do not have a clear idea of the characteristics and quantities of type specimens produced there. In this article, I point out the main work that has been carried out to date on this subject. Second, I offer a broad list of the documents I have located and analyze four specific cases. These findings will allow the public to appreciate the challenges involved in the systematic study of such documents and discover the richness, variety, and complexity offered by them when approaching the history of graphic culture in Latin America.
