Abstract

This paper presents the latest updates on PHITS, a versatile radiation transport code, focusing specifically on track-structure models. Track structure calculations are methods used to simulate the movement of charged particles while explicitly considering each atomic reaction. Initially developed for radiation biology, these calculation methods aimed to analyze the radiation-induced damage to DNA and chromosomes. Several track-structure calculation models, including PHITS-ETS, PHITS-ETS for Si, PHITS-KURBUC, ETSART, and ITSART, have been developed and implemented for PHITS. These models allow users to study the behavior of various particles at the nano-scale across a wide range of materials. Furthermore, potential applications of track-structure calculations have also been proposed so far. This collection of track-structure calculation models, which encompasses diverse conditions, opens up new avenues for research in the field of radiation effects.

Abstract

Tuberous sclerosis complex is a multisystem genetic syndrome often affecting the central nervous system. The purpose of the current study was to identify topographical patterns in the distribution specific to epileptogenic (n = 37) and nonepileptogenic (n = 544) tubers throughout the brain for a cohort of 23 tuberous sclerosis complex patients with a history of seizures. Tubers localized to the inferior parietal lobes, middle frontal lobes, middle temporal lobes, or central sulcus regions were associated with a high frequency of epileptogenic tubers. Epileptogenic tubers occurred statistically more frequently within the inferior parietal lobe and within the central sulcus region in children younger than 1 or between 1 and 3 years old, respectively. Results imply seizure activity in tuberous sclerosis complex patients can be associated with the location of cortical tubers.

Abstract

A single-celled amoeboid organism, the true slime mold Physarum polycephalum, exhibits rich spatiotemporal oscillatory behavior and sophisticated computational capabilities. The authors previously created a biocomputer that incorporates the organism as a computing substrate to search for solutions to combinatorial optimization problems. With the assistance of optical feedback to implement a recurrent neural network model, the organism changes its shape by alternately growing and withdrawing its photosensitive branches so that its body area can be maximized and the risk of being illuminated can be minimized. In this way, the organism succeeded in finding the optimal solution to the four-city traveling salesman problem with a high probability. However, it remains unclear how the organism collects, stores, and compares information on light stimuli using the oscillatory dynamics. To study these points, we formulate an ordinary differential equation model of the amoeba-based neurocomputer, considering the organism as a network of oscillators that compete for a fixed amount of intracellular resource. The model, called the “Resource-Competing Oscillator Network (RCON) model,” reproduces well the organism’s experimentally observed behavior, as it generates a number of spatiotemporal oscillation modes by keeping the total sum of the resource constant. Designing the feedback rule properly, the RCON model comes to face a problem of optimizing the allocation of the resource to its nodes. In the problem-solving process, “greedy” nodes having the highest competitiveness are supposed to take more resource out of other nodes. However, the resource allocation pattern attained by the greedy nodes cannot always achieve a “socially optimal” state in terms of the public cost. We prepare four test problems including a tricky one in which the greedy pattern becomes “socially unfavorable” and investigate how the RCON model copes with these problems. Comparing problem-solving performances of the oscillation modes, we show that there exist some modes often attain socially favorable patterns without being trapped in the greedy one.

Abstract

We demonstrate a neurocomputing system incorporating an amoeboid unicellular organism, the true slime mold Physarum, known to exhibit rich spatiotemporal oscillatory behavior and sophisticated computational capabilities. Introducing optical feedback applied according to a recurrent neural network model, we induce that the amoeba’s photosensitive branches grow or degenerate in a network-patterned chamber in search of an optimal solution to the traveling salesman problem (TSP), where the solution corresponds to the amoeba’s stably relaxed configuration (shape), in which its body area is maximized while the risk of being illuminated is minimized.Our system is capable of reaching the optimal solution of the four-city TSP with a high probability. Moreover, our system can find more than one solution, because the amoeba can coordinate its branches’ oscillatory movements to perform transitional behavior among multiple stable configurations by spontaneously switching between the stabilizing and destabilizing modes. We show that the optimization capability is attributable to the amoeba’s fluctuating oscillatory movements. Applying several surrogate data analyses, we present results suggesting that the amoeba can be characterized as a set of coupled chaotic oscillators.

31st European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition; 2261-2264, As a technique of maintaining and checking the solar photovoltaic power system, it is general that the amount of system power output is simulated from various weather conditions and the method for comparing it with an actual amount of PV power output. In that case, the check starts at field site afterwards when the actual measurement value of the amount of power output has decreased than the simurated value to some degree. Author proposed the advanced approach that measures the I-V curve to evaluate the I-V characteristic of the photovoltaic modules more accurately from 1st quadrant to 4th quadrant. The current flows from photovoltaic modules in the 1st quadrant and flows to PV in the 4th quadrant. This method has an advantage that I-V characteristic is evaluated more accurately because the data range of I-V curve increases1). In the present study, the effect was investigated how the I-V characteristic causes difference that the module was connected in the series, and the deteriorated module is contained with the string. The more accurate evaluation proved by measuring the I-V curve of each string to confirm accuracy by this advanced measurement method.

Abstract

A picosecond transient hole-burning (THB) spectroscopy has been performed for organic dyes in solution. The THB spectra of rhodamine 640 have been found to show a time-dependent spectral change. This phenomenon corresponds to the solvent relaxation effect observed in the time-resolved fluorescence (TRF) spectrum. Although TRF spectrum is related only to the excited-state relaxation, THB spectrum is affected by both ground- and excited-state relaxations. Comparing with the TRF spectrum measured under the same exciting energy, we have clarified the presence of the ground-state relaxation. Further, the THB spectrum of styryl-8 gives an antihole between well-separated two holes corresponding to ground- and excited-state contributions. This may originate from the hole-filling effect due to the nonadiabatic relaxation from the nonequilibrium excited state to the ground state. 240. FTIR Spectroscopy of Three Fundamental Bands of H2F+

Abstract

The ν1, ν2, and ν3bands of H2F+were observed with a Fourier transform absorption spectroscopic technique in the 3 and 7 μm regions. The ion was produced with a hollow cathode discharge in a F2, He, and H2gas mixture. A simultaneous analysis of FT data combined with laser spectroscopic data was carried out using the Watson’s A-reduced Hamiltonian to determine molecular constants in vibrationally excited states. The effect of the vibration–rotation interaction between the ν1and ν3states was found to be small compared with the case of H2O. The vibration–rotation transitions of the ν2band were first identified and analyzed to obtain molecular constants in the ν2state, and the band origin was determined to be 1370.5236 (7) cm–1with one standard deviation in parentheses. Determined molecular constants can be used to derive the restructure of H2F+as re(H–F) = 0.9608(6) Å, ∠e(H–F–H) = 112.2(2)° with the error corresponding to the uncertainty of the assumed vibration rotation constant γ2aand the range of the values derived from three pairs of rotational constants.

Abstract

A harmonic gyrotron traveling-wave tube (gyro-TWT) amplifier is described that can stably deliver high peak and average power in the low-loss [TE.sub.02]-mode at 91.4 GHz. The single-stage second-harmonic [TE.sub.02] gyro-TWT is predicted to produce a peak power of 600 kW with an efficiency of 24%, a saturated gain of 30 dB, and a 3-dB bandwidth of 2.7%. The amplifier employs a 100-kV, 25-A electron beam emitted from a magnetron injection gun with [v.sub.[perpendicular to]]/[v.sub.[parallel]] = 1.2 and [Delta][v.sub.[parallel]/[v.sub.[parallel] = 8%. The device is based on the proven concept that the electron beam current can be much higher in a stable harmonic gyro-TWT amplifier than at the fundamental due to the relatively weaker strength of the harmonic interaction. The [TE.sub.02] overmoded interaction waveguide is sufficiently large to handle an average power of 60 kW and provides considerable clearance for the high-current electron beam. An innovative mode-selective interaction circuit prevents the amplifier from oscillating in undesired modes. Abstract

A harmonic peniotron has been designed for high efficiency and relative immunity to mode competition from gyrotron interactions. The device employs a 70-kV, 3.5-A, axis-encircling electron beam. To ensure stability from competing gyrotron interactions, the peniotron will operate in the lowest-order mode of a slotted four-vane circuit, the [Pi]/2-mode. The cavity is strongly diffraction coupled for a high circuit efficiency. The 33-GHz, slotted second-harmonic peniotron is predicted to yield 125 kW with an electron efficiency of 58% and a device efficiency of 52%. The device is being constructed at the University of California at Davis and will be driven by a recently developed Northrop Grumman (Rolling Meadows, IL) cusp electron gun.
