Abstract

While interacting with a social robot, children have a need to express themselves and have their expressions acknowledged by the robot. A need that is often unaddressed by the robot, due to its limitations in understanding the expressions of children. To keep the child-robot interaction manageable the robot takes control, undermining children's ability to co-regulate the interaction. Coregulation is important for having a fulfilling social interaction. We developed a co-creation activity that aims to facilitate more co-regulation. Children are enabled to create sound effects, gestures, and light shows for the robot to use during their conversation. Results from a user study (N = 59 school children, 7-11 y.o.) showed that the co-creation activity successfully facilitated co-regulation by improving children's agency. Abstract

The robot rights debate has thus far proceeded without any reliable data concerning the public opinion about robots and the rights they should have. We have administered an online survey (n = 200) that investigates layman's attitudes towards granting particular rights to robots. Furthermore, we have asked them for what reasons they are willing to grant them those rights. Finally, we have administered general perceptions of robots regarding appearance, capacities, and traits. Results show that rights can be divided in sociopolitical and computing dimensions, and reasons into cognition and compassion dimensions. People generally have a positive view on robot interaction capacities. Attitudes towards robot rights depend on age and experience as well as on the cognitive and affective capacities people believe robots will ever possess. Our results suggest that the robot rights debate stands to benefit greatly from a common understanding of the capacity potentials of future robots. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The continuous integration of software-intensive systems together with the ever-increasing computing power offer a breeding ground for intelligent agents and multi-agent systems (MAS) more than ever before. Over the past two decades, a wide variety of languages, models, techniques and methodologies have been proposed to engineer agents and MAS. Despite this substantial body of knowledge and expertise, the systematic engineering of large-scale and open MAS still poses many challenges. Researchers and engineers still face fundamental questions regarding theories, architectures, languages, processes, and platforms for designing, implementing, running, maintaining, and evolving MAS. This paper reports on the results of the 6th International Workshop on Engineering Multi-Agent Systems (EMAS 2018, 14th-15th of July, 2018, Stockholm, Sweden), where participants discussed the issues above focusing on the state of affairs and the road ahead for researchers and engineers in this area.

Abstract

In order to facilitate a sustainable long-term interaction between a child and a robot they need to get acquainted with one another. In this paper we discuss the foundation, the rationale, and the evaluation (N = 75) of our design for an autonomous robot conversational partner that engages with Dutch children (8-11 y.o.) in a getting acquainted interaction. The main objective of the robot is to elicit children to self-disclose. Firstly, we discuss five interaction design patterns (IDPs) that proved to be successful in autonomously eliciting and processing self-disclosures. Secondly, we compared two robot behavior profiles. The behavior profiles can be relatively considered as being more and less energetic. We manipulated the movement speed, the speech rate and volume, the use of high/low energy language, waiting time before responding, and the order of high/low energy activities. Results show that the less energetic behavior profile significantly leads to more self-disclosure.

Robots y la forma en la que interactúan con personas, en los últimos años, ha sufrido un increíble crecimiento. En particular por la popularidad que están obteniendo por su uso en museos, centros de congresos, aeropuertos… El problema principal es que su software es aun no suficientemente funcional y no es capaz de ofrecer un buen rendimiento. El objetivo de esta investigación es mejorar las capacidades de Pepper en el campo de detección de personas y estimación de distancia. Para hacerlo usaremos un nuevo componente de hardware que Pepper integra en esta última versión, las visión en estéreo. Usaremos OpenCV y tensorFlow para procesar las imágenes. Compararemos las mejoras que nuestra técnica tiene frente a los métodos integrados en Pepper para estimar distancia a personas.---ABSTRACT---Robotics, and the way that they interact with people, in the last years, has seen incredible growth, in particular for the popularization that they are getting in museums, congress centers, airports. The main problem is that its software is still clumsy and not capable of offering a good performance. The aim of this research is to improve Pepper capabilities in the field of people detection and distance estimation. For doing this we will use one of the new hardware components that Pepper provides, Stereo Vision. We will make use of OpenCV and tensorFlow for processing the images. We compare the improvements that our technique has with the built-in methods of pepper robot for distance estimation and people detection.

218. Design Patterns for an Interactive Storytelling Robot to Support Children's Engagement and Agency.

Abstract

In this paper we specify and validate three interaction design patterns for an interactive storytelling experience with an autonomous social robot. The patterns enable the child to make decisions about the story by talking with the robot, reenact parts of the story together with the robot, and recording self-made sound effects. The design patterns successfully support children's engagement and agency. A user study (N = 27, 8-10 y.o.) showed that children paid more attention to the robot, enjoyed the storytelling experience more, and could recall more about the story, when the design patterns were employed by the robot during storytelling. All three aspects are important features of engagement. Children felt more autonomous during storytelling with the design patterns and highly appreciated that the design patterns allowed them to express themselves more freely. Both aspects are important features of children's agency. Important lessons we have learned are that reducing points of confusion and giving the children more time to make themselves heard by the robot will improve the patterns efficiency to support engagement and agency. Allowing children to pick and choose from a diverse set of stories and interaction settings would make the storytelling experience more inclusive for a broader range of children. 246. The significance of bidding, accepting and opponent modeling in automated negotiation

Abstract

Given the growing interest in automated negotiation, the search for effective strategies has produced a variety of different negotiation agents. Despite their diversity, there is a common structure to their design. A negotiation agent comprises three key components: the bidding strategy, the opponent model and the acceptance criteria. We show that this three-component view of a negotiating architecture not only provides a useful basis for developing such agents but also provides a useful analytical tool. By combining these components in varying ways, we are able to demonstrate the contribution of each component to the overall negotiation result, and thus determine the key contributing components. Moreover, we are able to study the interaction between components and present detailed interaction effects. Furthermore, we find that the bidding strategy in particular is of critical importance to the negotiator's success and far exceeds the importance of opponent preference modeling techniques. Our results contribute to the shaping of a research agenda for negotiating agent design by providing guidelines on how agent developers can spend their time most effectively.

Abstract

Execution of business processes often requires resources, the use of which is usually subject to constraints. In this paper, we study the compliance of business processes with resource usage policies. To this end, we relate the execution of a business process to its resource requirements in terms of resources consumed, produced or blocked by tasks of the business process. Policies specifying constraints on resource usage are specified in the form of obligations and the verification of whether a business process complies with a given resource usage policy is formally studied.
