Abstract

This investigation tested the usefulness of geometry-based landscape metrics for monitoring landscapes in a heavily disturbed environment. Research was carried out in a 75 sq km study area in Saxony, eastern Germany, where the landscape has been affected by surface mining and agricultural intensification. Landscape metrics were calculated from digital maps (1912, 1944, 1973, 1989) for the entire study area and for subregions (river valleys, plains), which were defined using the original geology and topography of the region. Correlation and factor analyses were used to select a set of landscape metrics suitable for landscape monitoring. Little land-use change occurred in the first half of the century, but political decisions and technological developments led to considerable change later. Metrics showed a similar pattern with almost no change between 1912 and 1944, but dramatic changes after 1944. Nonparametric statistical methods were used to test whether metrics differed between river valleys and plains. Significant differences in the metrics for these regions were found in the early maps (1912, 1944), but these differences were not significant in 1973 or 1989. These findings indicate that anthropogenic influences created a more homogeneous landscape.

Abstract

The Bagrov/Glugla algorithm developed in the 1970s is still the standard method for groundwater recharge calculations in the loose rock area of Central Germany, A comparison of different model versions and data sources shows that the model version used has an insignificant effect on the result, while the data source plays an important role. The use of geographical information systems simplifies the management of the data and facilitates the work.

The environmental, socio-cultural and economic functions of Streuobst, hedgerows and riparian buffers.In temperate agricultural land-scapes, forests as well as trees and shrubs outside forests are indispensable for maintaining the equilibrium between the landscape's productive and ecosystem regulation functions. The amount, type and arrangement of woody perennials on farmland depend mainly on the farmers' decisions. But other social groups and the authorities intervene as well, because trees have always attracted public attention.In the twentieth century, trees have been increasingly removed from European agricultural landscapes, mainly because of agricultural mechanization, land reallocations and the increasing specialization of farming enterprises. In recent years, however, enhanced awareness of the functions of trees in agricultural landscapes has provoked efforts to conserve them.In temperate Europe trees and shrubs in agricultural landscapes occur in a variety of systems including windbreaks, rows of timber-producing trees (e.g. poplar), trees that produce non-wood forest products such as nut-trees on agricultural lands (both croplands and grazing lands) and small blocks of natural forest retained on farmlands. This article focuses on three of the most prominent systems: Streuobst (fruit-trees scattered on agricultural land), hedgerows and riparian buffers. The article briefly describes the systems, summarizes their history and discusses their major environmental, socio-cultural and economic functions. Together, they help preserve the ecological balance of the landscape, mitigating the loss of biodiversity and the pollution of ground and surface water caused by industrialized farming methods.

Abstract

The conserved co-activator complex Mediator enables regulated transcription initiation by RNA polymerase (Pol) II. Here we reconstitute an active 15-subunit core Mediator (cMed) comprising all essential Mediator subunits from Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The cryo-electron microscopic structure of cMed bound to a core initiation complex was determined at 9.7 Å resolution. cMed binds Pol II around the Rpb4-Rpb7 stalk near the carboxy-terminal domain (CTD). The Mediator head module binds the Pol II dock and the TFIIB ribbon and stabilizes the initiation complex. The Mediator middle module extends to the Pol II foot with a 'plank' that may influence polymerase conformation. The Mediator subunit Med14 forms a 'beam' between the head and middle modules and connects to the tail module that is predicted to bind transcription activators located on upstream DNA. The Mediator 'arm' and 'hook' domains contribute to a 'cradle' that may position the CTD and TFIIH kinase to stimulate Pol II phosphorylation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The objective of this paper is to identify criteria for sustainability at a regional level (intermediate scale) for the evaluation of landscapes. The study site and the criteria were chosen while keeping in mind the situation in Eastern Germany, where the political change in 1989 has had tremendous influence on structures of cultural landscapes. These changes have been investigated in a rural area, north of Leipzig: Dübener Heide. This region now has the status of a nature park, so recreation and nature conservation have been explicitly added to the many functions of the landscape for the socio-economic survival of the people living there. Agriculture used to be crucial in supporting these functions. The rapid decline of agriculture in this marginal area is endangering the income of farm households and adversely affecting nature conservation and recreation. To revive the multifunctionality of the landscape, agriculture as a main land user could be embedded in the concept of sustainability, which itself has to integrate ecological, socio-economic and cultural aspects. There is a vast variety of published criteria for sustainability, but most of them relate to a very small scale (global level) or to a very large scale (field level). To evaluate sustainability on a intermediate scale (regional level), there is a need to derive criteria from the local level by agglomeration and from global level by differentiation.
