223. Sexuality and relationship education training to primary and secondary school teachers: an evaluation of provision in Western Australia

© 2018 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group This paper describes the formative, process and short term impact evaluation of sexuality and relationships education (SRE) training for teachers in Western Australia (WA) over a three year period. The training represents one component of a broader project, the aims of which are to improve teacher’s confidence and skills in delivering SRE, and to support schools to implement effective comprehensive SRE. Formative evaluation conducted prior to the development of the training, found although most respondents were relatively confident and skilled in facilitating SRE, the need for ongoing professional development was highlighted, especially in areas such as gender diversity, pornography, sexting, violence and working with specific groups. Training focusing on the new Australian Health and Physical Education curriculum and mandatory assessment was identified as a need. Workshop evaluation found statistically significant improvements in attitudes towards SRE and increased comfort in teaching SRE, facilitating discussion and facilitating skills and activities, after the workshop. The evaluation identified the need for an integrated and coordinated whole school approach and efforts to engage teachers with lower levels of confidence in teaching SRE. Changes to the Australian Curriculum provide opportunities to enhance the development of SRE in schools. Longer-term impact evaluation is required to identify whole school changes.

Abstract

We conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of anorexia nervosa (AN) using a stringently defined phenotype. Analysis of phenotypic variability led to the identification of a specific genetic risk factor that approached genome-wide significance (rs929626 in EBF1 (Early B-Cell Factor 1); P = 2.04 × 10-7; OR = 0.7; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.61-0.8) with independent replication (P = 0.04), suggesting a variant-mediated dysregulation of leptin signaling may play a role in AN. Multiple SNPs in LD with the variant support the nominal association. This demonstrates that although the clinical and etiologic heterogeneity of AN is universally recognized, further careful sub-typing of cases may provide more precise genomic signals. In this study, through a refinement of the phenotype spectrum of AN, we present a replicable GWAS signal that is nominally associated with AN, highlighting a potentially important candidate locus for further investigation. © 2017 The Author(s).

Abstract

The possibility of shortening the test length of beef bulls will be of great benefit. Not only will it save costs since collecting feed intake data is expensive, but more animals can be tested, enabling higher selection pressure on efficiency. Individual feed intake data from 3 070 Simmentaler bulls were consolidated into a standard 84-day test and four alternative test periods. The Pearson and Spearman correlations were estimated in respect of the conventional growth and efficiency traits (average daily gain, daily feed intake and feed conversion ratio) and alternative efficiency traits (metabolic mid weight, net daily gain and net feed intake) for the different test lengths. Shortening of the test length does not seem feasible, since the correlation for traits among different test lengths are too low. It is concluded that daily feed intake can be measured accurately at shorter test lengths; but average daily gain, feed conversion ratio and net feed intake (which are all dependant on weight gain) require a test length of at least 70 days. The combination of data from central tests, where feed intake is measured, with that of on-farm tests where only growth is measured, may be a solution. Abstract

In this contribution, a photoconductively switched high-voltage spark gap with an emphasis on the switching behavior is modeled. It is known experimentally that not all of the voltage that is present at the input of the spark gap is switched, but rather a fraction of it drops across the spark gap. This voltage drop depends on the voltage that is present at the input of the spark gap with higher voltages resulting in a smaller drop. We have investigated two possible causes of this: the cathode fall and the resistance of the plasma arc. Using an analytical model of the cathode fall, we have established that the cathode fall can be excluded as the cause of the observed voltage drop. A one-dimensional, time-dependent non-local thermal equilibrium fluid model of the arc plasma has been made. Using this model, the plasma properties have been analyzed for various values of the switched current with emphasis on the conductivity. A good qualitative match between the observed and the simulated dissipation in the gap was found. This indicates that the finite arc resistance is the cause of the observed voltage drop.
