The heart rate variability (HRV) can be taken as an indicator of the coordination of the cardio-respiratory rhythms. Bispectral analysis using a direct (fast Fourier transform based) and time-invariant approach has shown the occurrence of a quadratic phase coupling (QPC) between a low-frequency (LF: 0.1 Hz) and a high-frequency (HF: 0.4-0.6 Hz) component of the HRV during quiet sleep in healthy neonates. The low-frequency component corresponds to the Mayer-Traube-Hering waves in blood pressure and the high-frequency component to the respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA). Time-variant, parametric estimation of the bispectrum provides the possibility of quantifying QPC in the time course. Therefore, the aim of this work was a parametric, time-variant bispectral analysis of the neonatal HRV in the same neonates used in the direct, time-invariant approach. Objective: The time courses of quadratic phase-coupling (QPC) of electroencephalographic burst and interburst patterns of the ‘trace alternant’ (TA) in full-term newborns have been quantified.Methods: Using the Gabor expansion, a fast Fourier transformation based method, biamplitude, bicoherence and phase-bicoherence time courses of both burst and interburst patterns have been determined (common average reference EEG recordings). With a frequency resolution of 0.25 Hz and a frequency grid of 1–1.5⇔3.5–4.5 Hz (region-of-interest), a number of 15 frequency pairs result. These pairs have been investigated.Results: The burst and the interburst patterns are characterized by temporally and topographically different QPC profiles. All differences are dominant at the electrode Fp1 followed by Fp2. There is a significant difference (combined multiple and global test strategy) in the QPC characteristics between both patterns within the time period from 0.75 to 1.5 s after the pattern onset at electrode Fp1. The maximal QPC in burst patterns (especially at Fp1) can be observed during this time period. In contrast to this finding, maximal QPC in interburst patterns (at Fp1) are reached immediately after the onset and at 3 s. Summarising all findings, a QPC-rhythm of 0.1 Hz during TA can be assumed.Conclusions: It can be assumed that the QPC rhythm of the TA is generated by a pattern-spanning time-variant phase-locking process and there are indications for a possible correspondence between the QPC rhythm and vegetative rhythms.Significance: This study showed that advanced, time-variant analysis methods quantifying QPC rhythms are able to add new scientific information to the understanding of nature, characteristics and significance of TA in the neonatal EEG. Hyperthermia induces slight temperature increase of 4-8 °C inside the tumor, making it more responsive to radiation and drugs, thereby improving the outcome of the oncological treatment. To verify the level of heat in the tumor and to avoid damage of the healthy tissue, methods for non-invasive temperature monitoring are needed. Temperature estimation by means of microwave imaging is of great interest among the scientific community. In this paper, we present the results of experiments based on ultra-wideband (UWB) M-sequence technology. Our temperature estimation approach uses temperature dependency of tissue dielectric properties and relation of UWB images to the reflection coefficient on the boundary between tissue types. The realistic measurement setup for neck cancer hyperthermia considers three antenna arrangements. Data are processed with Delay and Sum beamforming and Truncated Singular Value Decomposition. Two types of experiments are presented in this paper. In the first experiment, relative permittivity of subsequently replaced tumor mimicking material is estimated, and in the second experiment, real temperature change in the tumor imitate is monitored. The results showed that the presented approach allows for qualitative as well as quantitative permittivity and temperature estimation. The frequency range for temperature estimation, preferable antenna configurations, and limitations of the method are indicated.

Background: Endometriosis is a chronic, estrogen-dependent, inflammatory condition which affects women of reproductive age physically and psychologically in their everyday life. The most common symptom is chronic lower abdominal pain. Apart from physical pain, endometriosis often also leads to an unfulfilled desire to give birth. In general, these two main aspects alone lead to emotional stress for patients and often initiate depressive symptoms. To what extent endometriosis patients are additionally affected by the COVID pandemic and its effects is to be determined in this study., Methods: Patients who presented at our endometriosis center and met the study criteria were offered participation in the study. A link to an online questionnaire (SoSci-Survey) was sent by email. The online questionnaire evaluated depressive symptoms before and during the pandemic as well as the pain perception and perceived support during the pandemic. The data of 167 fully completed questionnaires were evaluated and analyzed using SPSS., Results: The analysis of the questionnaires revealed a significant association between pain levels and depressive symptomatology in endometriosis patients during the pandemic. Patients with more severe pain showed significantly higher depressive symptoms than patients with little or no pain. During the pandemic, patients showed higher depressive symptoms than before. In addition, it was found that those endometriosis patients who felt left alone with their pain due to the consequences of the COVID pandemic, or who felt they had to endure the pain alone, also had higher depressive symptoms., Conclusion: In summary, it can be observed that endometriosis patients with a high pain burden had significantly higher depressive symptoms during the COVID pandemic. The consequences of the pandemic often led to the feeling of having to cope with the symptoms alone or having to endure pain alone, which in turn increased the depressive symptoms. Angiography is a very informative method for physicians such as cardiologists, neurologists and neuroscientists. The current modalities experience some shortages, e.g., ultrasound is very operator dependent. The computerized tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) angiography are very expensive and near infrared spectroscopy cannot capture the deep arteries. Microwave technology has the potential to address some of these issues while compromising between operator dependency, cost, speed, penetration depth and resolution. This paper studies the feasibility of microwave signals for monitoring of arteries. To this aim, a homogenous phantom mimicking body tissue is built. Four elastic tubes simulate arteries and a mechanical system creates pulsations in these arteries. A multiple input multiple output (MIMO) array of ultra-wideband (UWB) transmitters and receivers illuminates the phantom and captures the reflected signals over the desired observation time period. Since we are only interested in the imaging of dynamic parts, i.e., arteries, the static clutters can be suppressed easily by background subtraction method. To obtain a fast image of arteries, which are pulsating with the heartbeat rate, we calculate the Fourier transform of each channel of the MIMO system over the observation time and apply delay and sum (DAS) beamforming method on the heartbeat rate aligned spectral component. The results show that the lateral and longitudinal images and motion mode (M-mode) time series of different points of phantom have the potential to be used for diagnosis.

Peatland pools are freshwater bodies that are highly dynamic aquatic ecosystems because of their small size and their development in organic-rich sediments. However, our ability to understand and predict their contribution to both local and global biogeochemical cycles under rapidly occurring environmental change is limited because the spatiotemporal drivers of their biogeochemical patterns and processes are poorly understood. We used (1) pool biogeochemical data from 20 peatlands in eastern Canada, the United Kingdom, and southern Patagonia and (2) multi-year data from an undisturbed peatland of eastern Canada, to determine how climate and terrain features drive the production, delivering and processing of carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) in peatland pools. Across sites, climate (24%) and terrain (13%) explained distinct portions of the variation in pool biogeochemistry, with climate driving spatial differences in pool dissolved organic C (DOC) concentration and aromaticity. Within the multi-year dataset, DOC, carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), total N concentrations, and DOC aromaticity were highest in the shallowest pools and at the end of the growing seasons, and increased gradually from 2016 to 2021 in relation to a combination of increases in summer precipitation, mean air temperature for the previous fall, and number of extreme summer heat days. Given the contrasting effects of terrain and climate, broad-scale terrain characteristics may offer a baseline for the prediction of small-scale pool biogeochemistry, while broad-scale climate gradients and relatively small year-to-year variations in local climate induce a noticeable response in pool biogeochemistry. These findings emphasize the reactivity of peatland pools to both local and global environmental change and highlight their potential to act as widely distributed climate sentinels within historically relatively stable peatland ecosystems., (© 2023 The Authors. Despite the increases in women's educational attainment in recent decades, female labor market participation and labor market returns are still lower than those of their male counterparts. Among the main factors explaining this persistence of economic inequality is the persistently gendered nature of occupational expectations, which results in gender segregation of labor. In this paper, we describe how gender-specific adolescents' occupational expectations change over time (2006-2018) and how women's empowerment and cultural norms might influence gender-specific occupational expectations. Against the backdrop of the research on the gender-equality paradox and from a comparative perspective, we focus on national and institutional characteristics to investigate how individual and national factors explain gendered occupational expectations. We answer our research questions by applying a two-step multilevel model with fixed effects. For this, we used PISA data and merged them with state-level information from 26 European countries. We add to existing research by making three contributions. First, we describe the changes in occupational expectations over time within European countries by looking at the gender composition of the desired occupation and distinguishing three categories (gender-typical, gender-balanced, and gender-atypical). Second, we investigate the relationship between national characteristics and the evolution of gendered occupational expectations separately by gender to reveal gender-specific mechanisms. Third, by using data from two-time points, we explore which national-level changes lead to changes in students' occupational expectations. Our first descriptive results show that the patterns of how students' occupational expectations change over time differ remarkably between countries. In 2018 in some countries, students' occupational expectations became more segregated while in others the number of students with gender-balanced or gender-atypical expectations increased. Our fixed effects models show that women's empowerment and self-expression value explained variance over time. For example, women's empowerment measured via an increase in women's employment and participation in parliament led to less gender-typical occupational expectations among girls and boys. Similarly, a rise in self-expression values led to less gender-typical occupational expectations, again for both boys and girls. Birth-related fractures are an important differential diagnosis of child abuse in early infancy. While fractures associated to vaginal deliveries are well known, cesarean section is not necessarily known to cause such injuries. Nevertheless neonatal fractures have been described after cesarean sections. To give an overview over the frequency and typical locations of such fractures, the appearance of symptoms and the timespan until diagnosis, a literature research was conducted via Google scholar and Pubmed, using the key words "cesarean section" and "fractures". Birth-related fractures after cesarean sections are rare but can occur, with the long bones being particularly affected. Therefore, birth injuries should always be considered in the forensic medical assessment of fractures in early infancy, even after cesarean section. To enable a differentiation between birth trauma and physical abuse, birth and operation records should be checked for surgical manoeuvres, possible difficulties during the procedure or other risk factors. Gender segregation in higher education is considered one of the main drivers of persistent economic gender inequality. Yet, though there has been considerable research identifying and describing the underlying mechanisms that cause gendered educational choices in higher education, little is known about how gender segregation in higher education could be changed. Accordingly, this article aims to determine the potential of educational interventions during high school to foster gender desegregation in higher education. We focused on two different processes that contribute to gender segregation in majors among higher education graduates: first, the selection into specific majors and, second, the selection out of specific majors. We investigated whether an intensive counselling programme leads to more gender-atypical choices among high-school graduates and examined whether intensive counselling supports several indicators of students' persistence in gender-atypical majors. Based on data from an experimental study of a counselling programme for German high-school students ( N = 625), we estimated the programme's effect with linear probability models and intention-to-treat analysis. Our results show that high-school graduates are more likely to choose a gender-atypical major if they have received intensive counselling. This applies more to men than to women. In addition, the programme improved some persistence indicators for students in gender-atypical majors. Although we found a significant programme effect only for perceived person-major fit and student satisfaction, the coefficients of all aspects of students' persistence show a trend indicating that the programme was beneficial for students in gender-atypical majors. As experimental studies can also be affected by various types of bias, we performed several robustness checks. All analyses indicated stable results. In conclusion, we suggest that intensive counselling programmes have the potential to reduce gender segregation in higher education. Arctic-boreal landscapes are experiencing profound warming, along with changes in ecosystem moisture status and disturbance from fire. This region is of global importance in terms of carbon feedbacks to climate, yet the sign (sink or source) and magnitude of the Arctic-boreal carbon budget within recent years remains highly uncertain. Here, we provide new estimates of recent (2003-2015) vegetation gross primary productivity (GPP), ecosystem respiration (R eco ), net ecosystem CO 2 exchange (NEE; R eco  - GPP), and terrestrial methane (CH 4 ) emissions for the Arctic-boreal zone using a satellite data-driven process-model for northern ecosystems (TCFM-Arctic), calibrated and evaluated using measurements from >60 tower eddy covariance (EC) sites. We used TCFM-Arctic to obtain daily 1-km 2 flux estimates and annual carbon budgets for the pan-Arctic-boreal region. Across the domain, the model indicated an overall average NEE sink of -850 Tg CO 2 -C year -1 . Eurasian boreal zones, especially those in Siberia, contributed to a majority of the net sink. In contrast, the tundra biome was relatively carbon neutral (ranging from small sink to source). Regional CH 4 emissions from tundra and boreal wetlands (not accounting for aquatic CH 4 ) were estimated at 35 Tg CH 4 -C year -1 . Accounting for additional emissions from open water aquatic bodies and from fire, using available estimates from the literature, reduced the total regional NEE sink by 21% and shifted many far northern tundra landscapes, and some boreal forests, to a net carbon source. This assessment, based on in situ observations and models, improves our understanding of the high-latitude carbon status and also indicates a continued need for integrated site-to-regional assessments to monitor the vulnerability of these ecosystems to climate change., (© 2023 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.)

Background: Vaccination against COVID-19 is an effective measure to mitigate the pandemic. Pregnant and breastfeeding women were not included in registration studies, so official recommendations to vaccinate this vulnerable group appeared belated. Therefore, our aims were to evaluate vaccination uptake, reasons for and against vaccination, and the changes in these depending on the official national recommendations in Germany., Methods: An anonymous online cross-sectional survey among pregnant and breastfeeding women was conducted prior to and after the publication of the official vaccination recommendation., Results: Data from the convenience sample of 5411 participants (42.9% pregnant; 57% breastfeeding) were analysed. The recommendation was known to 95% of the participants. The information was obtained mainly autonomously (61.6%) and through the media (56.9%). Vaccination uptake increased in pregnant (2.4% before vs. 58.7% after) and breastfeeding women (13.7% vs. 74.7%). As reasons to get vaccinated, pregnant women indicated more fear of the infection than of the side effects of vaccination (52.0% before vs. 66.2% after), intended protection of the baby and oneself (36.0% vs. 62.9%), and limited information about vaccination (53.5% vs. 24.4%)., Conclusion: The official national recommendation is widely known and mostly obtained autonomously, thereby showing a high level of awareness and a rise in vaccination uptake. Nonetheless, targeted education campaigns focusing on scientific evidence should be maintained, whereas the engagement of health professionals should be enhanced.

Purpose: The aim of the present study was to compare birth expectations and antenatal bonding of women pregnant prior to and during the COVID-19 pandemic., Materials and Methods: In total, 74 pregnant women (mean age: 33.9 ± 4.1 years, gestational age: 36 ± 2 weeks) participated in the study, who were pregnant either during the the COVID-19 pandemic ( corona group , N = 35, April-July 2020) or before the pandemic ( control group , N = 39, October 2017-January 2019). Birth expectations were measured using the Wijma Delivery Expectancy Questionnaire (WDEQ) and Salmon's Item List (SIL) and antenatal bonding with the Maternal Antenatal Attachment Scale (MAAS). Additionally, the corona group indicated their level of worry regarding different pandemic-related aspects using visual analogue scales., Results: The corona group displayed significantly elevated fear of childbirth measured by the WDEQ and lower antenatal bonding quality compared to the control group . The additional items regarding COVID-19 burdens highlighted that the aspects that the partner may not be present during labour and that no visitors will be allowed in hospital were associated with the highest worries., Conclusions: Midwives and gynaecologists should be aware of the negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on fear of childbirth and antenatal bonding .

Magnetic nanoparticles have been investigated for microwave imaging over the last decade. The use of functionalized magnetic nanoparticles, which are able to accumulate selectively within tumorous tissue, can increase the diagnostic reliability. This paper deals with the detecting and imaging of magnetic nanoparticles by means of ultra-wideband microwave sensing via pseudo-noise technology. The investigations were based on phantom measurements. In the first experiment, we analyzed the detectability of magnetic nanoparticles depending on the magnetic field intensity of the polarizing magnetic field, as well as the viscosity of the target and the surrounding medium in which the particles were embedded, respectively. The results show a nonlinear behavior of the magnetic nanoparticle response depending on the magnetic field intensity for magnetic nanoparticles diluted in distilled water and for magnetic nanoparticles embedded in a solid medium. Furthermore, the maximum amplitude of the magnetic nanoparticles responses varies for the different surrounding materials of the magnetic nanoparticles. In the second experiment, we investigated the influence of the target position on the three-dimensional imaging of the magnetic nanoparticles in a realistic measurement setup for breast cancer imaging. The results show that the magnetic nanoparticles can be detected successfully. However, the intensity of the particles in the image depends on its position due to the path-dependent attenuation, the inhomogeneous microwave illumination of the breast, and the inhomogeneity of the magnetic field. Regarding the last point, we present an approach to compensate for the inhomogeneity of the magnetic field by computing a position-dependent correction factor based on the measured magnetic field intensity and the magnetic susceptibility of the magnetic particles. Moreover, the results indicate an influence of the polarizing magnetic field on the measured ultra-wideband signals even without magnetic nanoparticles. Such a disturbing influence of the polarizing magnetic field on the measurements should be reduced for a robust magnetic nanoparticles detection. Therefore, we analyzed the two-state (ON/OFF) and the sinusoidal modulation of the external magnetic field concerning the detectability of the magnetic nanoparticles with respect to these spurious effects, as well as their practical application.

Microwave sensors have recently been introduced as high-temporal resolution sensors, which could be used in the contactless monitoring of artery pulsation and breathing. However, accurate and efficient signal processing methods are still required. In this paper, the matrix pencil method (MPM), as an efficient method with good frequency resolution, is applied to back-reflected microwave signals to extract vital signs. It is shown that decomposing of the signal to its damping exponentials fulfilled by MPM gives the opportunity to separate signals, e.g., breathing and heartbeat, with high precision. A publicly online dataset (GUARDIAN), obtained by a continuous wave microwave sensor, is applied to evaluate the performance of MPM. Two methods of bandpass filtering (BPF) and variational mode decomposition (VMD) are also implemented. In addition to the GUARDIAN dataset, these methods are also applied to signals acquired by an ultra-wideband (UWB) sensor. It is concluded that when the vital sign is sufficiently strong and pure, all methods, e.g., MPM, VMD, and BPF, are appropriate for vital sign monitoring. However, in noisy cases, MPM has better performance. Therefore, for non-contact microwave vital sign monitoring, which is usually subject to noisy situations, MPM is a powerful method.

The knowledge of temperature distribution inside the tissue to be treated is essential for patient safety, workflow and clinical outcomes of thermal therapies. Microwave imaging represents a promising approach for non-invasive tissue temperature monitoring during hyperthermia treatment. In the present paper, a methodology for quantitative non-invasive tissue temperature estimation based on ultra-wideband (UWB) radar imaging in the microwave frequency range is described. The capabilities of the proposed method are demonstrated by experiments with liquid phantoms and three-dimensional (3D) Delay-and-Sum beamforming algorithms. The results of our investigation show that the methodology can be applied for detection and estimation of the temperature induced dielectric properties change.

Wetland methane (CH 4 ) emissions ([Formula: see text]) are important in global carbon budgets and climate change assessments. Currently, [Formula: see text] projections rely on prescribed static temperature sensitivity that varies among biogeochemical models. Meta-analyses have proposed a consistent [Formula: see text] temperature dependence across spatial scales for use in models; however, site-level studies demonstrate that [Formula: see text] are often controlled by factors beyond temperature. Here, we evaluate the relationship between [Formula: see text] and temperature using observations from the FLUXNET-CH 4 database. Measurements collected across the globe show substantial seasonal hysteresis between [Formula: see text] and temperature, suggesting larger [Formula: see text] sensitivity to temperature later in the frost-free season (about 77% of site-years). Results derived from a machine-learning model and several regression models highlight the importance of representing the large spatial and temporal variability within site-years and ecosystem types. Mechanistic advancements in biogeochemical model parameterization and detailed measurements in factors modulating CH 4 production are thus needed to improve global CH 4 budget assessments.

Endometriosis is a hormone-related, chronic inflammation in women of childbearing age. The aetiology and pathogenesis of endometriosis are not yet fully understood. For other illnesses classed as lifestyle diseases, the link between nutrition and pathogenesis has already been researched and proven. With regard to these findings, the question continues to arise as to whether and how a specific diet and lifestyle could also influence pathogenesis and the progression of endometriosis. The aim of this review is to examine the data and determine what influence nutrition has on the development of endometriosis or on existing disease. The study results currently available do not permit a clear, scientific recommendation or indicate a detailed diet. In summary, it can be said that fish oil capsules in combination with vitamin B 12 have been associated with a positive effect on endometriosis symptoms (particularly of dysmenorrhoea). Alcohol and increased consumption of red meat and trans fats are associated with a negative effect. The results of the studies listed with regard to fruit and vegetables, dairy products, unsaturated fats, fibre, soy products and coffee are not clear. Therefore, the general recommendations for a balanced and varied diet in line with the guidelines of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Ernährung e. V. [German Nutrition Society] apply, along with the recommendation to cut out alcohol. A positive birth experience for the mother is an important goal in obstetric health care and is influenced by several factors. For this study, 186 women filled in questionnaires between 24 and 72 hours after giving birth vaginally. We evaluated the Big-Five personality traits (extraversion, neuroticism, openness, conscientiousness and agreeableness), trait anxiety, different dimensions of childbirth experience and pain management. Correlation analysis revealed that trait anxiety and neuroticism were negatively associated with several dimensions of the birth experience. Furthermore, conscientiousness and extraversion were positively correlated with the dimension Participation. Regression analysis for the individual dimensions and overall score respectively, confirmed the independent impact of anxiety trait on Perceived Safety, Participation and Professional Support and the overall score as well as of neuroticism on Perceived Safety and conscientiousness on Participation. The significant regression models showed small R2-scores (.084-.154). The birth experience did not differ whether the women received an epidural or not. Women who did not receive an epidural displayed higher scores on the personality trait conscientiousness. The study highlights small but important associations between personality traits and birth experience in vaginal births which should sensitize the medical staff when supporting women during labor.

This contribution deals with the detection and imaging of magnetic modulated nanoparticles by means of ultra-wideband sensing. We performed phantom measurements in a practical measurement setup where the magnetic nanoparticles are modulated by a static and a low periodic changing external magnetic field. We investigated the influence of the modulation type of the polarizing magnetic field on both, detectability and imaging of magnetic nanoparticles. We can conclude that both modulations generate a sufficient contrast in order that the nanoparticles were detected at the correct position in a three-dimensional volume. The imaging results, including 32 channels, indicate that the two state (ON/OFF) modulation of the magnetic field under constant environmental conditions shows better results compared to a sinusoidal excitation of the magnetic field.
