A search for the exclusive production of the $Z_c^{\pm}(3900)$ hadron by virtual photons has been performed in the channel $Z_c^{\pm}(3900)\rightarrow J/\psi \pi^{\pm}$. The data cover the range from 7 GeV to 19 GeV in the centre-of-mass energy of the photon-nucleon system. The full set of the COMPASS data set collected with a muon beam between 2002 and 2011 has been used. An upper limit for the ratio $BR(Z_c^{\pm}(3900)\rightarrow J/\psi \pi^{\pm} )\times \sigma_{ \gamma~N \rightarrow Z_c^{\pm}(3900)~ N} /\sigma_{\gamma~N \rightarrow J/\psi~ N}$ of $3.7\times10^{-3}$ has been established at the confidence level of 90%., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, 1 table

High Energy Physics::Experiment ,Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
Exclusive production of $\eta\pi^-$ and $\eta'\pi^-$ has been studied with a $191\,\textrm{GeV}/c$ $\pi^-$ beam impinging on a hydrogen target at COMPASS (CERN). Partial-wave analyses reveal different odd/even angular momentum ($L$) characteristics in the inspected invariant mass range up to $3\,\textrm{GeV}/c^2$. A striking similarity between the two systems is observed for the $L=2,4,6$ intensities (scaled by kinematical factors) and the relative phases. The known resonances $a_2(1320)$ and $a_4(2040)$ are in line with this similarity. In contrast, a strong enhancement of $\eta'\pi^-$ over $\eta\pi^-$ is found for the $L=1,3,5$ waves, which carry non-$q\bar q$ quantum numbers. The $L=1$ intensity peaks at $1.7\,\textrm{GeV}/c^2$ in $\eta'\pi^-$ and at $1.4\,\textrm{GeV}/c^2$ in $\eta\pi^-$, the corresponding phase motions with respect to $L=2$ are different.

The COMPASS collaboration has collected the currently largest data set on diffractively produced $^-^-^+$ final states using a negative pion beam of 190 GeV/c momentum impinging on a stationary proton target. This data set allows for a systematic partial-wave analysis in 100 bins of three-pion mass, $0.5 < m_{3} < 2.5$ GeV/c$^2$ , and in 11 bins of the reduced four-momentum transfer squared, $0.1 < t < 1.0$ (GeV/c)$^2$ . This two-dimensional analysis offers sensitivity to genuine one-step resonance production, i.e. the production of a state followed by its decay, as well as to more complex dynamical effects in nonresonant $3$ production. In this paper, we present detailed studies on selected $3$ partial waves with $J^{PC} = 0^{-+}$, $1^{++}$, $2^{-+}$, $2^{++}$, and $4^{++}$. In these waves, we observe the well-known ground-state mesons as well as a new narrow axial-vector meson $a_1(1420)$ decaying into $f_0(980) $. In addition, we present the results of a novel method to extract the amplitude of the $^-^+$ subsystem with $I^{G}J^{PC} = 0^+ 0^{++}$ in various partial waves from the $^-^-^+$ data. Evidence is found for correlation of the $f_0(980)$ and $f_0(1500)$ appearing as intermediate $^- ^+$ isobars in the decay of the known $(1800)$ and $_2(1880)$., 96 pages

Exclusive production of ηπ− and η′π− has been studied with a 191 GeV/c π− beam impinging on a hydrogen target at COMPASS (CERN). Partial-wave analyses reveal different odd/even angular momentum (L) characteristics in the inspected invariant mass range up to 3 GeV/c2. A striking similarity between the two systems is observed for the L=2,4,6 intensities (scaled by kinematical factors) and the relative phases. The known resonances a2(1320) and a4(2040) are in line with this similarity. In contrast, a strong enhancement of η′π− over ηπ− is found for the L=1,3,5 waves, which carry non-qq¯ quantum numbers. The L=1 intensity peaks at 1.7 GeV/c2 in η′π− and at 1.4 GeV/c2 in ηπ−, the corresponding phase motions with respect to L=2 are different.

- Abstract
Intracranial volume reflects the maximally attained brain size during development, and remains stable with loss of tissue in late life. It is highly heritable, but the underlying genes remain largely undetermined. In a genome-wide association study of 32,438 adults, we discovered five previously unknown loci for intracranial volume and confirmed two known signals. Four of the loci were also associated with adult human stature, but these remained associated with intracranial volume after adjusting for height. We found a high genetic correlation with child head circumference (ρgenetic = 0.748), which indicates a similar genetic background and allowed us to identify four additional loci through meta-analysis (Ncombined = 37,345). Variants for intracranial volume were also related to childhood and adult cognitive function, and Parkinson's disease, and were enriched near genes involved in growth pathways, including PI3K-AKT signaling. These findings identify the biological underpinnings of intracranial volume and their link to physiological and pathological traits.

- Abstract
Subcortical structures, which include the basal ganglia and parts of the limbic system, have key roles in learning, motor control and emotion, but also contribute to higher-order executive functions. Prior studies have reported volumetric alterations in subcortical regions in schizophrenia. Reported results have sometimes been heterogeneous, and few large-scale investigations have been conducted. Moreover, few large-scale studies have assessed asymmetries of subcortical volumes in schizophrenia. Here, as a work completely independent of a study performed by the ENIGMA consortium, we conducted a large-scale multisite study of subcortical volumetric differences between patients with schizophrenia and controls. We also explored the laterality of subcortical regions to identify characteristic similarities and differences between them. T1-weighted images from 1680 healthy individuals and 884 patients with schizophrenia, obtained with 15 imaging protocols at 11 sites, were processed with FreeSurfer. Group differences were calculated for each protocol and meta-analyzed. Compared with controls, patients with schizophrenia demonstrated smaller bilateral hippocampus, amygdala, thalamus and accumbens volumes as well as intracranial volume, but larger bilateral caudate, putamen, pallidum and lateral ventricle volumes. We replicated the rank order of effect sizes for subcortical volumetric changes in schizophrenia reported by the ENIGMA consortium. Further, we revealed leftward asymmetry for thalamus, lateral ventricle, caudate and putamen volumes, and rightward asymmetry for amygdala and hippocampal volumes in both controls and patients with schizophrenia. Also, we demonstrated a schizophrenia-specific leftward asymmetry for pallidum volume. These findings suggest the possibility of aberrant laterality in neural pathways and connectivity patterns related to the pallidum in schizophrenia.

- Abstract
Background Lithium is a first-line treatment in bipolar disorder, but individual response is variable. Previous studies have suggested that lithium response is a heritable trait. However, no genetic markers of treatment response have been reproducibly identified. Methods Here, we report the results of a genome-wide association study of lithium response in 2563 patients collected by 22 participating sites from the International Consortium on Lithium Genetics (ConLiGen). Data from common single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were tested for association with categorical and continuous ratings of lithium response. Lithium response was measured using a well established scale (Alda scale). Genotyped SNPs were used to generate data at more than 6 million sites, using standard genomic imputation methods. Traits were regressed against genotype dosage. Results were combined across two batches by meta-analysis. Findings A single locus of four linked SNPs on chromosome 21 met genome-wide significance criteria for association with lithium response (rs79663003, p=1·37×10-8; rs78015114, p=1·31×10-8; rs74795342, p=3·31×10-9; and rs75222709, p=3·50×10-9). In an independent, prospective study of 73 patients treated with lithium monotherapy for a period of up to 2 years, carriers of the response-associated alleles had a significantly lower rate of relapse than carriers of the alternate alleles (p=0·03268, hazard ratio 3·8, 95% CI 1·1-13·0). Interpretation The response-associated region contains two genes for long, non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs), AL157359.3 and AL157359.4. LncRNAs are increasingly appreciated as important regulators of gene expression, particularly in the CNS. Confirmed biomarkers of lithium response would constitute an important step forward in the clinical management of bipolar disorder. Further studies are needed to establish the biological context and potential clinical utility of these findings. Funding Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, National Institute of Mental Hea

- Abstract
The two hemispheres of the human brain differ functionally and structurally. Despite over a century of research, the extent to which brain asymmetry is influenced by sex, handedness, age, and genetic factors is still controversial. Here we present the largest ever analysis of subcortical brain asymmetries, in a harmonized multi-site study using meta-analysis methods. Volumetric asymmetry of seven subcortical structures was assessed in 15,847 MRI scans from 52 datasets worldwide. There were sex differences in the asymmetry of the globus pallidus and putamen. Heritability estimates, derived from 1170 subjects belonging to 71 extended pedigrees, revealed that additive genetic factors influenced the asymmetry of these two structures and that of the hippocampus and thalamus. Handedness had no detectable effect on subcortical asymmetries, even in this unprecedented sample size, but the asymmetry of the putamen varied with age. Genetic drivers of asymmetry in the hippocampus, thalamus and basal ganglia may affect variability in human cognition, including susceptibility to psychiatric disorders.

- Abstract
Exclusive production of $\omega$ mesons was studied at the COMPASS experiment by scattering $160~\mathrm{GeV}/\mathit{c}$ muons off transversely polarised protons. Five single-spin and three double-spin azimuthal asymmetries were measured in the range of photon virtuality $1~(\mathrm{GeV}/\mathit{c})^2 < Q^2 < 10~(\mathrm{GeV}/\mathit{c})^2$, Bjorken scaling variable $0.003 < x_{\mathit{Bj}} < 0.3$ and transverse momentum squared of the $\omega$ meson $0.05~(\mathrm{GeV}/\mathit{c})^2 < p_{T}^{2} < 0.5~(\mathrm{GeV}/\mathit{c})^2$. The measured asymmetries are sensitive to the nucleon helicity-flip Generalised Parton Distributions (GPD) $E$ that are related to the orbital angular momentum of quarks, the chiral-odd GPDs $H_{T}$ that are related to the transversity Parton Distribution Functions, and the sign of the $\pi\omega$ transition form factor. The results are compared to recent calculations of a GPD-based model., Comment: 23 pages, 9 figures

- Abstract
Multiplicities of charged pions and unidentified hadrons produced in deep-inelastic scattering were measured in bins of the Bjorken scaling variable $x$, the relative virtual-photon energy $y$ and the relative hadron energy $z$. Data were obtained by the COMPASS Collaboration using a 160 GeV muon beam and an isoscalar target ($^6$LiD). They cover the kinematic domain in the photon virtuality $Q^2$ > 1(GeV/c$)^2$, $0.004 < x < 0.4$, $0.2 < z < 0.85$ and $0.1 < y < 0.7$. In addition, a leading-order pQCD analysis was performed using the pion multiplicity results to extract quark fragmentation functions.

The magneto-optical (MO) imaging is one of the methods for visualizing the magnetization distribution corresponding to the leakage magnetic fields. In general, the MO imaging requires high-spatial resolution and high-contrast imaging. The spatial resolution of the MO imaging depends on the magnetic domain size. In this study, we used the polycrystalline garnet films with a domain size of about 50 nm for the high-resolution imaging. We also demonstrated MO imaging using the magnetophotonic crystal (MPC) with polycrystalline garnet films in order to improve the MO image contrast. The MO images of a carbon steel surface can be observed by means of the MPC. As a result, the high-spatial resolution and high-contrast MO image was obtained by MPC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The (e, e'p_0) cross section of ^O was measured at an energy transfer of 60 MeV and a momentum transfer of 105.2 MeV/c, using a 199.53 MeV continuous electron beam. The result is compared with theoretical calculations based on the relativistic distorted-wave impulse approximation (RDWIA). The theoretical values overestimate the experimental ones by a factor of two. The contribution of meson exchange current (MEC) effects is important in the high missing momentum region.

Communicated by H. Uchimiya Abstract We have developed a new procedure for Agrobacterium-mediated transformation of plants in the genus Beta using shoot-base as the material for Agrobacterium infection. The frequency of regeneration from shoot bases was analyzed in seven accessions of sugarbeet (Beta vulgaris) and two accessions of B. maritima to select materials suitable for obtaining transformed plants. The frequency of transformation of the chosen accessions using Agrobacterium strain LBA4404 and selection on 150-mg/l kanamycin was found to be higher than that in previously published methods. Genomic DNA analysis and -glucuronidase reporter assays showed that the transgene was inherited and expressed in subsequent generations. In our method, shoot bases are prepared by a simple procedure, and transformation does not involve the callus phase, thus minimizing the occurrence of somaclonal variations.

Objective. Carbamazepine (CBZ), a widely used antiepileptic drug, is one major cause of the idiosyncratic liver injury along with immune reactions. Conversely, prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) demonstrates a hepatoprotective effect by regulating immune reactions and promoting liver repair in various types of liver injury. However, the amount of hepatic PGE2 during CBZ-induced liver injury remains elusive. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the hepatic PGE2 levels during CBZ-induced liver injury using a mouse model.

Exclusive production of $^-$ and $'^-$ has been studied with a $191\,\textrm{GeV}/c$ $^-$ beam impinging on a hydrogen target at COMPASS (CERN). In contrast, a strong enhancement of $'^-$ over $^-$ is found for the $L=1,3,5$ waves, which carry non-$q\bar q$ quantum numbers. The $L=1$ intensity peaks at $1.7\,\textrm{GeV}/c^2$ in $'^-$ and at $1.4\,\textrm{GeV}/c^2$ in $^-$, the corresponding phase motions with respect to $L=2$ are different., 16 pages, 5 figures and 1 table

Hippocampal volume is a key brain structure for learning ability and memory process, and hippocampal atrophy is a recognized biological marker of Alzheimer's disease. However, the genetic bases of hippocampal volume are still unclear although it is a heritable trait. Genome-wide association studies (GWASs) on hippocampal volume have implicated several significantly associated genetic variants in Europeans. Here, to test the contributions of these GWASs identified genetic variants to hippocampal volume in different ethnic populations, we screened the GWAS-identified candidate single-nucleotide polymorphisms in 3 independent healthy Asian brain imaging samples (a total of 990 subjects). The results showed that none of these single-nucleotide polymorphisms were associated with hippocampal volume in either individual or combined Asian samples. The replication results suggested a complexity of genetic architecture for hippocampal volume and potential genetic heterogeneity between different ethnic populations. © 2014 Elsevier Inc. The COMPASS Collaboration at CERN has investigated the reaction $^- \rightarrow ^-^-^+$ embedded in the Primakoff reaction of $190~\textrm{GeV}$ pions scattering in the Coulomb field of a lead target, $^- \text{Pb} \rightarrow ^-^-^+ \text{Pb}$. Exchange of quasi-real photons is selected by isolating the sharp Coulomb peak observed at momentum transfer below $0.001~(\text{GeV}/c)^2$. Using a partial-wave analysis the amplitudes and relative phases of the $a_2(1320)$ and $_2(1670)$ mesons have been extracted, and the Coulomb and the diffractive contributions have been disentangled. Measuring absolute production cross sections we have determined the radiative width of the $a_2(1320)$ to be $_0(a_2(1320) \rightarrow ) = (358 \pm 6_{\textrm{stat}} \pm 42_{\textrm{syst}})~\textrm{keV}$. As the first measurement, $_0(_2(1670) \rightarrow ) = (181 \pm 11_{\textrm{stat}} \pm 27_{\textrm{syst}})~\textrm{keV} \cdot (\textrm{BR}^{\textrm{PDG}}_{f_2 }/\textrm{BR}_{f_2 })$ is obtained for the radiative width of the $_2(1670)$, where in this analysis the branching ratio $\textrm{BR}^{\textrm{PDG}}_{f_2 }=0.56$ has been used. We compare these values to previous measurements and theoretical predictions., 27 pages, 12 figures and 3 tables

Exclusive production of the isoscalar vector mesons $$ and $$ is measured with a 190 GeV$/c$ proton beam impinging on a liquid hydrogen target. Cross section ratios are determined in three intervals of the Feynman variable $x_{F}$ of the fast proton. A significant violation of the OZI rule is found, confirming earlier findings. Its kinematic dependence on $x_{F}$ and on the invariant mass $M_{p\mathrm{V}}$ of the system formed by fast proton $p_\mathrm{fast}$ and vector meson $V$ is discussed in terms of diffractive production of $p_\mathrm{fast}V$ resonances in competition with central production. The measurement of the spin density matrix element $_{00}$ of the vector mesons in different selected reference frames provides another handle to distinguish the contributions of these two major reaction types. Again, dependences of the alignment on $x_{F}$ and on $M_{p\mathrm{V}}$ are found. Most of the observations can be traced back to the existence of several excited baryon states contributing to $$ production which are absent in the case of the $$ meson. Removing the low-mass $M_{p\mathrm{V}}$ resonant region, the OZI rule is found to be violated by a factor of eight, independently of $x_\mathrm{F}$., 23 pages, 13 figures and 5 tables

The aim of this study was to elucidate the relationships among serum levels of hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA, periods after hepatitis B surface (HBs) antigen clearance, and the titer of hepatitis B core (HBc) antibody in 200-fold diluted serum. Twelve patients who had clearance of HBs antigen from serum were studied. Five patients had not received any treatment (group A), and seven had received prednisolone withdrawal therapy. The patients in groups A and B were followed up for 86 months and 108 months (median), respectively. Serum HBV was measured by the nested polymerase chain reaction method. In both groups, serum HBV tended to become gradually undetectable after HBs antigen clearance. The positive rate of HBV in the sera 5 years or more after HBs antigen clearance was significantly lower than that in the sera at less than 5 years, both in group A (P = 0.004) and group B (P = 0.010). In both groups, the titer of HBs tended to decline every year after HBs antigen clearance. HBV was still detectable in the sera of some patients for a long period of time after they showed seroconversion to HBs antibody. The results suggest that detection of HBV was difficult in sera with an HBc titer of 30% or lower and at more than 5 years after HBs antigen clearance in both groups. It is important to note that HBV DNA rarely exists in the serum, even when HBs antigen and HBc are both negative.
