208. Black Female Entrepreneurs in Jamaica : Defying the (In)visible Barriers and Succeeding

Abstract

This paper examines the factors that affect Black female entrepreneurs in Jamaica through the lens of slavery, colonialism, gender, race, class and the impact of the International Monetary Fund’s predatory neoliberal policies. In addition, the essay includes a literature review that shows the impact of these factors on Black female business owners in the Caribbean and the US, but the US is not included in analysis of the IMF. While secondary and primary sources were used, the primary sources produced more up-to-date and relevant information for this paper, particularly for Jamaica. The research portrayed that slavery and colonialism laid the foundation on which gender, race and class is structured for Black female business owners today. It also showed the consequences of these imposed systematic structures on the business women in the informal and formal sectors. Additionally, the essay illustrated that the predatory neoliberal policies of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has had adverse effects on the economy which in turn impacts the establishment and growth of Black female entrepreneurship. The essay demonstrates in the form of case studies the various successful encounter measures that the group of informal commercial importers from the informal sector and three entrepreneurs from the formal arena, deployed. This feat was achieved partly because the government implemented a monetary policy that created a positive economy.

Abstract

PURPOSE: The etiology of young-onset breast cancer (BC) is poorly understood, despite its greater likelihood of being hormone receptor-negative with a worse prognosis and persistent racial and socioeconomic inequities. We conducted a population-based case-control study of BC among young Black and White women and here discuss the theory that informed our study, exposures collected, study methods, and operational results. METHODS: Cases were non-Hispanic Black (NHB) and White (NHW) women age 20-49 years with invasive BC in metropolitan Detroit and Los Angeles County SEER registries 2010-2015. Controls were identified through area-based sampling from the U.S. census and frequency matched to cases on study site, race, and age. An eco-social theory of health informed life-course exposures collected from in-person interviews, including socioeconomic, reproductive, and energy balance factors. Measured anthropometry, blood (or saliva), and among cases SEER tumor characteristics and tumor tissue (from a subset of cases) were also collected. RESULTS: Of 5,309 identified potentially eligible cases, 2,720 sampled participants were screened and 1,812 completed interviews (682 NHB, 1140 NHW; response rate (RR): 60%). Of 24,612 sampled control households 18,612 were rostered, 2,716 participants were sampled and screened, and 1,381 completed interviews (665 NHB, 716 NHW; RR: 53%). Ninety-nine% of participants completed the main interview, 82% provided blood or saliva (75% blood only), and SEER tumor characteristics (including ER, PR and HER2 status) were obtained from 96% of cases. CONCLUSIONS: Results from the successfully established YWHHS should expand our understanding of young-onset BC etiology overall and by tumor type and identify sources of racial and socioeconomic inequities in BC.

Abstract

A study was conducted to evaluate the surgeon recommendations for mastectomy surgery for women with breast cancer and compare them with second opinion recommendations. Results indicated that breast-conserving surgery (BCS) was recommended in most cases by surgeons and failure of BCS and patient decision all contributed to the increased rate of mastectomy.

Abstract

PURPOSE: To assess weight status, physical activity, and dietary behaviors in an ethnically-diverse sample of breast and colorectal cancer survivors with early onset disease (≤ 50 years). METHODS: Breast and colorectal cancer survivors, diagnosed between 1999 and 2009 with early-stage cancer diagnosed by 50 years of age, were identified through a population-based cancer registry and surveyed. Descriptive and regression analyses were conducted to characterize the sample and identify correlates of lifestyle behaviors. FINDINGS: The majority of participants (n = 156) were female (83%), insured (84%), and racial/ethnic minorities (29% Asian, 24% Latino, 15% African American). Participants mean age at response was 50 years and mean time since diagnosis was 9 years. Over half of survivors were overweight or obese. Few participants reported engaging in regular physical activity (31%) and adhering to minimum guidelines for fruit and vegetable consumption (32%). A substantial proportion of survivors consumed fast food in the past week (75%) and nearly half (48%) reported daily consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages. Lower income was associated with inadequate fruit and vegetable intake. Fast food and sugar-sweetened beverage consumption was significantly higher among racial/ethnic minority survivors compared to non-Latino whites. CONCLUSIONS: High prevalence of overweight and suboptimal adherence to recommended nutrition and physical activity behaviors were observed among cancer survivors with early onset disease. Cancer survivors diagnosed at a young age may benefit from targeted interventions to address overweight and suboptimal nutrition and physical activity.

Abstract

A sketch of the development of institutional review boards (IRBs) and the system of human subjects research regulation in the United States is presented, from the Nuremberg Code of 1949 to the Belmont Report of 1979, and continues with several contemporary developments. Conflicts within the system are discussed, particularly those related to the regulatory application of the medical model to social science. Examination of two central documents produced by participants in the IRB regulatory system is presented to illustrate difficulties with current regulation. Abstract

There appears to be a type of hereditary breast cancer that is caused by exposure to the hormones that become active during puberty. This was the conclusion of researchers who studied 1,811 pairs of female twins, one or both of whom had breast cancer. When both twins had breast cancer, the twin who went through puberty first developed breast cancer first.
