Abstract

Lately, tremendous industrial wastes such as glass waste, clay-ceramic waste, fly ash, sludge and metallurgical steel slag, particularly electric arc furnace (EAF) slag have been progressively recycled as partial replacement of raw materials in sustainable clay-based ceramics such as brick, ceramic tile and roofing tile. Among these waste, metallurgical steel slag could be an excellent sustainable choice due to its similar chemical composition as raw materials for the ceramics. From literature surveys, the first attempt of recycling the slag into ceramics was proposed by Badiee [1] and they have successfully utilized the slag generated by one of the steel making plants in Iran. This idea was further succeeded by Sarkar [2] by reusing the slag waste generated in India. To the best of author's knowledge, this current research work [3,4] is the third attempt and the research is focussing on utilization of Malaysia's metallurgical steel slag into clay-based ceramics, i.e. ceramic tile. Therefore, this article will be briefly reviewing the previous and current progresses as well as achievements on efforts of recycling the worldwide metallurgical steel slag as partial replacement of raw materials in sustainable clay-based ceramics. Abstract

Currently, the used of graphene oxide (GO) nanoparticles in membrane polymer has become major attraction for researchers due to its ability as hydrophilic properties, which can optimize membrane structural morphology surface and performance in filtration process. However, there is still lacking information on the effect of different concentration of GO on membrane performance in filtration process. Therefore, this research has been carried out to identify the effect of GO nanoparticles with different concentration; 0.5wt%, 1.0wt%, 1.5wt%, 2.0wt%, on polysulfone (PSF) polymer membranes. Flux analysis has been conducted to observe membrane performance in filtrate humid acid solution. In addition, phase inversion method has been carried out by preparing dope composition for membrane solution by mixing PEG in 16wt% PSF and 10wt% PEG and the rest was filled by dimethylacetamide (DMAc) as solvent medium. As a result, M2.0 membrane with GO dosage 2.0wt% exhibit lowest contact angle by 41.27° indicated highest hydrophilic properties of the membrane. Moreover, M2.0 membrane showed highest water uptake and porosity with value 361.99% and 82.12%, respectively. Abstract

Recycling of valuable metals from spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is urgently needed to reduce dependence on non-renewable natural resources and environmental problems from battery waste. Nickel-manganese-cobalt sulphate is one of the intermediate products of valuable metal that can be obtained from spent LIBs using a hydrometallurgical process. This paper investigates a method consisting of several stages of precipitation methods for extracting valuable metals in the form of nickel-manganese-cobalt sulphate from the cathode materials of spent LIBs, namely 'black mass'. The precipitation of Ni-Co-Mn sulphate (mixed sulphate product) from the pregnant leach solution of spent LIBs was carried out in four stages: Fe-1 precipitation, Fe-2 precipitation, Ni-Co precipitation, and Mn precipitation. Later, the characteristic of the precipitation's product and residue was determined by comparing the outcome from each pH parameter. The study shows that the percentage of Fe precipitation is 99.5%, while Ni, Co, and Mn precipitation was 99.5%, 98.3%, and 88.3% respectively. Further, the precipitation outcome of nickel, cobalt, and manganese dissolved in sulfuric acid can be used as a precursor in the production of electric vehicle batteries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This paper presents the perception of lecturers, tutors and lab instructors towards the implemented Continuous-Group-Self-Learning (CGSL) in the Department of Computer and Communication System Engineering (CCSE), Universiti Putra Malaysia. This innovative system introduces mock teaching and student-lecturer role as a technique of delivery. The system ensures a continuous group work and the students are learning with class-oriented problem-based learning (CO-PBL) instead of seasonal project oriented problem-based learning (PO-PBL). The radical change in the assessment by adopting mock teaching oriented assessment (MTOA) has given a new definition to assess the student thoroughly. 49 respondents have taken part in this study, in which 30 of them are lecturers, 8 are tutors and 11 are laboratory instructors who currently active serving in the department. In general, 56% of the respondent do not agree this learning system shifted the teaching job to the students and 56.55% of them disagree this approach is a burdensome to the students who are undergoing this learning style. This system in fact a catalyst that urges the lecturers, tutors and lab instructors to enhance themselves in order to cope up with the 'knowledge demand' from the student when 82.1% of the respondents agree to be more knowledgeable as compared to conventional teaching method.
