Abstract

Cyprus is an island located in the northeastern corner of the Mediterranean Sea, fifty miles south of the coast of Cilicia, near the Levant. It is approximately 140 miles (225 kilometers) long by 60 miles (97 kilometers) wide. The island, because of its strategic location, was seen throughout history as an important possession and found itself involved in many conflicts through the ages. The island was also seen as a valuable economic resource because of its plentiful production of wheat, olives, and wine and its extensive copper deposits. The ancient writer Ammianus Marcellinus noted that Cyprus was so fertile that it could completely build and stock cargo ships solely from its own resources. According to myth, Aphrodite (Greek goddess of love, beauty, and fertility) emerged from the sea at Cyprus, and numerous temples to her can be found throughout the island, especially near Paphos.

Great Britain proclaimed the island of Cyprus a Crown Colony on May 1, 1925. Britain had directly administered the island for a number of years, but the proclamation formalized and regularized British rule there. However, since the change in legal status failed to lead to any immediate reforms in British administration and did not solve any of the island’s long-term problems, most Cypriots regarded the change as unimportant.

Abstract

Cyprus was colonized by the Greeks during the second millennium b.c.e. The Turks settled on the island during Ottoman rule, which lasted from 1571 to 1878. By the time Great Britain took control in 1878, the Cypriot society’s biethnic character had been formed and consolidated. In 1960, when Cyprus became independent from British colonial rule, its population of 570,000 consisted of 78 percent Christian Greek Cypriots, 18 percent Muslim Turkish Cypriots, and 4 percent other minorities.
