Abstract

Hybrid organic-inorganic materials doped with zwitterionic push-pull chromophores with high hyperpolarizability have been synthesized via sol-gel, based on glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPTMS) and glycidoxypropylmethyldimethoxysilane (GDMMS). Homogeneous films doped with chromophores, have been obtained using N-hydroxyethylcarbazole as a physical spacer avoiding dye aggregation. The waveguiding properties of the spin-coated doped films electrically poled in N-2 atmosphere showing second harmonic generation measurements, have been preliminarily measured by m-line spectroscopy before and after poling; the feasibility of channel waveguiding structures has been demonstrated. Abstract

In this work, a previously studied system of a hybrid sol-gel material doped with a push pull chromophore is optimized by co-doping the matrix with carbazole functionalized units, and achieving enhanced second order NLO properties. The microstructure modifications of the hybrid sol-gel matrix have been investigated during the thermal treatment and the poling procedure, together with the stability of the dopants. The thermal treatment performed during the poling process dets. the carbazole units degrdn. while the chromophore mols. remain unaltered and their absorbance features are strongly modified. 220. Measurements of nonlinear properties on semiconductor-doped sol-gel films

Abstract

Thin silica-titania planar waveguides doped with cadmium sulphide have been prepared on fused silica substrates using the sol-gel technique. Tetraethoxisylane (TEOS) and titanium butilate Ti(n-OBu)4 (30%) were used as precursors of the film.1 The semiconductor dopants have been introduced by adding cadmium nitrate and thiourea to the starting solution as precursors of cadmium and sulphur, respectively. The films have been produced by dipping the samples in the solution and withdrawing them at constant speed. Thereafter the samples have been densified at 300°C for 4 hours in nitrogen atmosphere in order to prevent outdiffusion of the dopants. The thickness of the films is typically about 1300 A and their refractive index is 1.63 at 633 nm.

Abstract

Objective: We hypothesized that a 50% increase in respiratory system elastance (Ers) would indicate similar degree of lung damage (equi-damage, ED), independently of ventilation strategy. Design and setting: A prospective, randomized animal laboratory investigation at a university hospital laboratory. Subjects: 35 anesthetized, paralyzed, mechanically ventilated male Sprague-Dawley rats. Interventions: Each rat was ventilated with a different combination of tidal volume, positive end-expiratory pressure, and inspired fraction of oxygen. Ers was determined throughout the experiment; the studies were interrupted when Ers reached 150% (ED) of its baseline value, or after 5 h. Measurements and results. Lung wet to dry weight ratio (W/D) was assessed. Morphological damage of the lung was scored on a grading of perivascular edema, hemorrhage, and breaks in the alveolar septa to obtain a total injury score. Twenty-four rats achieved an Ers of 150%: nine within 1 h (class 1), nine in 1-2 h (class 2), and six in 2-5 h (class 3). Eleven rats did not reach the target 50% increase in Ers (class 4). W/D was higher in rats that reached the target than in those that did not. W/D did not differ among rats that reached ED. Similarly, the total injury score did not differ among classes 1-3 but was higher than class 4. Conclusions: In the setting of VILI a 50% increase in Ers corresponds to an equal level of lung damage, irrespective of ventilatory setting and time of ventilation.
