Abstract: Super-homogenisation (SPH) factors were generated by a modified version of the code DYN3D for PWR fuel assemblies in hot-zero-power states defined in the OECD MOX/UO2 Benchmark. SPH factors averaged for each pin-material type and factors for each individual pin position were produced. The application of the SPH factors improves the accuracy of DYN3D calculations, especially for configurations with control rods inserted. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The core model DYN3D which has been developed for three-dimensional analyses of steady states and transients in thermal reactors with quadratic or hexagonal fuel assemblies is based on nodal methods for the solution of the two-group neutron diffusion equation. Loading cores with higher content of MOX fuel, the increase of the fuel cycle length, and the consideration of new reactor types are challenging for these standard methods. A nodal expansion method for solving the equations of the simplified P 3 (SP3) approximation of the multigroup transport equation was developed to improve the accuracy of the DYN3D code. The method described in the paper is verified with pinwise calculations of a steady state of the OECD/NEA and US NRC PWR MOX/UO2 Core Transient Benchmark. The used 16-group cross section library was generated for DORT calculations with homogenized pin cells. Two different approximations of the diffusion coefficient which occurs in the within-group form of the SP3 equations are investigated. Using the transport cross section for the calculation of the diffusion coefficient gives much better results than those obtained with the removal cross section. The improvement of the results in comparison to a pinwise diffusion calculation is shown. The results are compared with the DORT and the heterogeneous reference solution of the code DeCART. Concerning the SP3 calculation using the diffusion coefficient based on the transport cross section (DYN3D-SP3-TR) the deviations of the eigenvalue k eff and the assembly powers from the transport solutions of DORT and DeCART are in the same order as those between the two transport solutions themselves. The improvement of the DYN3D-SP3-TR results in comparison to the diffusion calculation is presented. As the DYN3D-SP3-TR and DORT calculations are performed with homogenized pin cells, the pin powers of the two calculations are closer to each other than to the pin powers of the DeCART solution. To estimate the contribution of higher flux-moments, the ratio of the second flux moment to the zeroth flux moment is investigated along a horizontal row of pins. It is shown that it is low in the fuel assemblies with small peaks at the water channels. Considering the baffle and the water reflector regions higher values are obtained in the fast neutron groups. Delayed awakening after general anaesthesia is in the majority of cases due to prolonged effects of anaesthetic drugs. However, intracerebral processes are also associated with disturbances of consciousness. Here, we report a case of a female patient who developed an intracerebral haemorrhage because of an arteriovenous malformation during routine surgery. This shows that in the case of delayed awakening after general anaesthesia the possibility of an intracerebral process should be considered early even after routine surgery. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Measurements carried out in an original-size VVER-1000 mock-up (V-1000 facility, Kurchatov Institute, Moscow) were used for the validation of three-dimensional neutron-kinetic codes, designed for VVER safety calculations. The significant neutron flux tilt measured in the V-1000 core, which is caused only by radial-reflector asymmetries, was successfully modeled. A good agreement between calculated and measured steady-state powers has been achieved, for relative assembly powers and inner-assembly pin power distributions. Calculated effective multiplication factors exceed unity in all cases. The time behaviour of local powers, measured during two transients that were initiated by control rod moving in a slightly super-critical core, has been well simulated by the neutron-kinetic codes. Background: The purpose of this study was to compare the classical laryngeal mask airway (LMA) with the laryngeal tube (LT) in anaesthetised non-paralysed patients.Patients and Methods: A total of 100 patients scheduled for minor elective surgery were included. After standardised induction and maintenance of anaesthesia with propofol and remifentanil, patients were randomly allocated to receive either a LMA or LT; muscle relaxants were not applied. Selection of the appropriate size and the initial inflation volume were chosen according to the manufacturers instructions. Ease of insertion, initial intra-cuff pressure, oropharyngeal leak pressure at an intra-cuff pressure of 60 cm H(2)O and incidence and severity of complications during and after anaesthesia were compared.Results: The LT was inserted significantly quicker than the LMA (35.1+/-15.9 s vs. 56.6+/-42.5 s; mean+/-SD). Insertion of the LT was successful within 1 attempt in 90% and within 2 or 3 attempts in another 4% of patients for the LT compared with 68% and 20% of patients for the LMA, respectively. For the LT the initial cuff pressure was significantly lower (75.1+/-16.2 cm H(2)O) and the oropharyngeal leak pressure after adjustment of the intra-cuff pressure to 60 cm H(2)O was significantly higher (27.2+/-6.9 mbar) compared with the LMA (109.5+/-25.7 cm H(2)O and 19.9+/-4.0 mbar, respectively). Incidence of postoperative laryngeal complications in the LT group (31%) was lower compared with the LMA group (54%).Conclusion: In anaesthetised non-paralysed patients the LT compares favourably to the LMA in terms of ease of insertion and postoperative morbidity. Objective: To ascertain whether there is a difference between total intravenous anaesthesia with propofol (P) and remifentanil (R) and inhalational anaesthesia with desflurane (D) and nitrous oxide (N) with regard to haemodynamic reactions, recovery profile and postoperative analgesic demand in patients scheduled for elective microsurgical vertebral disc resection.Methods: 50 patients (ASA I-II, 18-65 years) were randomly assigned to receive total intravenous anaesthesia with propofol and remifentanil or inhalational anaesthesia with desflurane and nitrous oxide. After standardised induction of anaesthesia in both groups (1 microgram.kg-1 remifentanil, 1.5 mg.kg-1 propofol 0.1 mg.kg-1 cisatracurium), anaesthesia was maintained in the D/N group with desflurane in 50% N2O. The patients of the P/R group received a constant infusion of 2 mg.kg-1.h-1 propofol and a constant infusion of 0.5 microgram.kg-1.min-1 remifentanil, which was reduced after 15 min by 50%. The administration of desflurane and the infusion of the anaesthetics were adjusted to maintain a surgical depth of anaesthesia. At the end of surgery the anaesthetics were discontinued and early emergence from anaesthesia was assessed by measuring time to spontaneous ventilation (VT > 4 ml/kg), tracheal extubation, opening of the eyes and stating correct name and data of birth. The frequency of analgesics and total demand for analgesics were determined using patient-controlled analgesia and recorded for 2 h postoperatively. In addition the pain level of the patients was measured on a visual analogue scale and the incidence of postoperative shivering, nausea and vomiting was noted.Results: Patients anaesthetised with desflurane responded to tracheal intubation and skin incision with increasing blood pressure and showed higher heart rates than patients anaesthetised with propofol and remifentanil, but there were no other haemodynamic differences between the groups in response to surgical stimuli. There were significantly shorter times to spontaneous ventilation (3.2 vs. 6.3 min), extubation (3.8 vs. 9.5 min), eye opening (3.0 vs. 11.5 min) and giving name and date of birth (4.8 vs. 14.3 min) in patients anaesthetised with remifentanil and propofol than in those receiving desflurane and nitrous oxide. In addition, patients anaesthetised with remifentanil and propofol had a greater incidence of postoperative shivering. There were no significant differences between the two groups in the patients' pain scores, analgesic demand and incidence of nausea and vomiting.Conclusion: Patients anaesthetised with propofol and remifentanil have significantly shorter emergence times than patients anaesthetised with desflurane and nitrous oxide. The low incidence of postoperative pain after microsurgical vertebral disc resections requires no large-scale analgesic therapy, even after total intravenous anaesthesia including remifentanil. Globin mRNA isolated from anemic chicken was transcribed into cDNA and integrated into the Pst I cleavage site of plasmid pBR 322. After cloning in E. coli strain HB 101 and colony hybridization withI-labelled globin mRNA the plasmids of individual clones were characterized by hybrid arrested cell-free translation. Thus we could isolate clones containing α or β globin chain nucleotide sequences. DNA was isolated from chicken blastoderms incubated for 18-20 h and from 11 d chicken embryos. A comparison of the restriction maps of the DNA from the two developmental stages with labelled nick translated plasmids and labelled cDNA did not indicate any globin gene rearrangements between these two stages of embryonic development. We conclude, that the adult chicken globin genes show a constant genomic organization during embryonic development. However, the restriction patterns of the globin gene family of the chicken strain investigated revealed some differences after 2 generations of propagation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
