212. Planning and Implementing a 3D Printing Service in an Academic Library

Abstract

Initiating a 3D printing service in an academic library goes beyond justification of its value and gaining the necessary library and administrative support. Additional aspects such as policies, environmental safety, training, publicizing, maintenance, and scope of service must be considered. This article provides a guide to developing a 3D print service including recommendations for building support, issues to consider before implementing a service, tips for developing staff proficiency, and links to guides and policies at academic libraries. We also present examples of use cases observed at the University of Florida 3D printing service that demonstrate the value of 3D printing in supporting the teaching and research mission of a university.

220. A Qualitative Investigation of the College Choice Experiences and Reentry Expectations of U.S. American Third Culture Kids

Abstract

The focus of this qualitative study is on U.S. third culture kids (TCKs), youth who have grown up abroad because of their parent's work, and their college choice experiences and reentry expectations. Through a background questionnaire and personal interviews with eleven students transitioning from two international secondary schools in a Spanish-speaking Latin American country to a U.S. college, I invite students to tell their stories in order to begin to understand this process. Further, I interview the schools' college counselors, in order to gain more insight. Previous research on U.S. third culture kids and college choice is quite limited and retrospective. This dissertation offers a new perspective to the topic by exploring this process while the research participants are experiencing the college choice process first hand. Further, this study is the first to explore U.S. third culture kids' expectations of college in their home country. Findings regarding college choice reveal numerous patterns. Parents were the biggest source of influence on students when considering individual college choice. Other family members and friends also influenced the process. Findings also indicated numerous organizational characteristics that influenced choice including the pre-college international location, pre-college school guidance, access to college recruitment activities, availability of academic major, and familiar location. Findings on expectations and predicted challenges revealed a range of responses. Expectations were for the most part vague, though realistic. Predicting challenges was an easy task for the students. Most recognized adjustment issues to be one of the challenges they would have to face. Conclusions from this study include: (1) International location influences numerous aspects of the college search process; (2) Strong student ties to the "familiar" play an important role in their college choice process; (3) Adjusting to U.S. culture is an expected challenge; and (4) College orientations are extremely important to third culture kids. Recommendations for practice are offered to international secondary schools, U.S. colleges, and other invested parties which include third culture kids, sponsoring organizations of families, and EducationUSA offices. Additionally, numerous recommendations are offered for future research to even further expand the scope of literature on third culture kids. Abstract

This article analyses the institutional awareness of children's perceptions within municipal urban planning, based on qualitative methods. Within this framework, 7 interviews have been conducted with political actors and administrative staff which are all connected to urban planning strategies in the municipalities of Almada and Sintra. In course of this, a content analysis of the gathered data has been undertaken, through which the following results have been reached: municipal actors continue to emancipate a vision of children's participation in a dependent paradigm, where playing and actively engaging remain the core rights recognized by the city. This is articulated through the need of effective participation in urban planning as it occurs of relevance within institutional discourses, where the sharing of power and responsibility in decision-making dynamics are not yet implemented. This issue exposes a matter between paradigmatic and pragmatic conceptions: the child as a subject of rights, and the child as an instrument of general political performance (or the maximum of consultation and information)., Este texto analisou as perceções institucionais sobre a participação das crianças no planeamento urbano municipal. Abstract

Diversity of plants and animals influence soil carbon through their contributions to soil organic matter (SOM). However, we do not know whether mammal and tree communities affect SOM composition in the same manner. This question is relevant because not all forms of carbon are equally resistant to mineralization by microbes and thus, relevant to carbon storage. We analyzed the elemental and molecular composition of 401 soil samples, with relation to the species richness of 83 mammal and tree communities at a landscape scale across 4.8 million hectares in the northern Amazon. We found opposite effects of mammal and tree richness over SOM composition. Mammal diversity is related to SOM rich in nitrogen, sulfur and iron whereas tree diversity is related to SOM rich in aliphatic and carbonyl compounds. These results help us to better understand the role of biodiversity in the carbon cycle and its implications for climate change mitigation. Abstract

Antibodies against the carboxy-terminal section of the membrane-proximal external region (C-MPER) of the HIV-1 envelope glycoprotein (Env) are considered as nearly pan-neutralizing. Development of vaccines capable of producing analogous broadly neutralizing antibodies requires deep understanding of the mechanism that underlies C-MPER recognition in membranes. Here, we use the archetypic 10E8 antibody and a variety of biophysical techniques including single-molecule approaches to study the molecular recognition of C-MPER in membrane mimetics. In contrast to the assumption that an interfacial MPER helix embodies the entire C-MPER epitope recognized by 10E8, our data indicate that transmembrane domain (TMD) residues contribute to binding affinity and specificity. Moreover, anchoring to membrane the helical C-MPER epitope through the TMD augments antibody binding affinity and relieves the effects exerted by the interfacial MPER helix on the mechanical stability of the lipid bilayer. These observations support that addition of TMD residues may result in more efficient and stable anti-MPER vaccines.

Abstract

We describe here the conjugate addition of tert-butyllithium to vinyl systems of boronic esters to generate a borata-alkene intermediate, followed by a sequential S(N)2 reaction with alkyl halides, at room temperature. We envisioned this goal through engaged C(sp(3)) chemical entities avoiding metal catalysts, additives, radical initiators or specific irradiation. This reaction guarantees that the new tetrasubstituted carbon formed retains all the C atoms from the three starting materials involved in the assembly.
