Inorganic arsenic (iAs) could induce the expression of activating transcription factor-2 (ATF2) in the human urinary bladder epithelial cell line (SV-HUC-1 cells). ATF2, as a member of the bZIP transcription factor family, has been implicated in a transcriptional response leading to cell growth, migration and malignant tumor progression. However, little is known about the effects of ATF2 on proliferative factors in iAs treated human urothelial cells. In this study, ATF2 siRNA was employed to investigate the relationship between ATF2 activation and the expressions of proliferative factors, such as BCL2, cyclin D1, COX-2, MMP1 and PCNA, and pro-inflammatory factors (TNFα, TGFα and IL-8) in SV-HUC-1 cells. The results showed that low concentration arsenite increased the expressions of proliferative factors BCL2, cyclin D1, COX-2, MMP1 and PCNA in SV-HUC-1 cells, and ATF2 siRNA partly decreased the expressions of BCL2, cyclin D1, and COX-2. A neutralizing antibody of IL-8 was used for attenuating the levels of IL-8 and neutralizing antibody of IL-8 did not relieve the expressions of ATF2 and proliferative factors induced by arsenite in SV-HUC-1 cells. In addition, ATF2 knockdown did not decrease the expressions of pro-inflammatory cytokines induced by arsenite in SV-HUC-1 cells, but dramatically increased mRNA expressions of TNFα, TGFα and IL-8 under arsenite and non-arsenite conditions. In conclusion, our present study indicated that ATF2, but not IL-8, played a partial role in the expressions of proliferative factors induced by arsenite in human uroepithelial cells. SURFACE active agents ,ENZYMES ,WASTEWATER treatment ,SEWAGE disposal plants ,ACTIVATED sludge process - Abstract
There are significant municipal concerns relating to the use of surfactants and enzymes in the process of wastewater treatment. Treatment plants use different techniques to remove impurities from water. As wastewater treatment plants use the latest technology to remove contaminants from water, there are high costs, and sometimes an enforcement of regulations is lax. Still, many municipalities across the country prohibit the use of surfactants and enzymes entering wastewater treatment because of the harmful effects of these products on the sewer lines and high damage costs. Surfactant compounds are organic. Their molecules include water-soluble and oil or an insoluble component. These molecular compounds seek the water surface and chemically reduce the boundaries between oil and water. When surfactants are in the water, they absorb into the soil and can cause injury to plants and organic organisms, but people find surfactants and enzymes useful in cleaning agents for emulsifying and dispersing oil and grease. Scientists have found that at least some surfactants are toxic to ecosystems, people and animals, but they have not been able predict far-reaching consequences. And now the most important question is how to solve this problem or how to reduce these negative effects. In this paper we tried to remove surfactants from waste water with an activated sludge system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this research, uncertainty associated with initial and boundary conditions is evaluated for short-term wind speed prediction in complex terrain. The study area is the Alaiz mountain range, a windy region in the northern Iberian Peninsula. A multiphysics and multiple initial and boundary condition ensemble prediction system (EPS) was generated using the Weather Research and Forecasting model. Uncertainty of the EPS is analyzed using an index based on the spread between ensemble members, considering its behavior under different wind speed and direction events, and also during distinct atmospheric stability conditions. The results corroborate that physical parameterization uncertainty is greater for short-term forecasts (63.5%). However, it is also necessary to consider the uncertainty associated with initial conditions, not only for its quantitative importance (36.5%) but also for its behavior during thermal inversion conditions in the narrow valleys surrounded by mountains. Tear fluid forms the outermost layer of the ocular surface and its characteristics and composition have been connected to various ocular surface diseases. As tear proteomics enables the non-invasive investigation of protein levels in the tear fluid, it has become an increasingly popular approach in ocular surface and systemic disease studies. Glaucoma, which is a set of multifactorial diseases affecting mainly the optic nerve and retinal ganglion cells, has also been studied using tear proteomics. In this condition, the complete set of pathophysiological changes occurring in the eye is not yet fully understood, and biomarkers for early diagnosis and accurate treatment selection are needed. More in-depth analyses of glaucoma tear proteomics have started to emerge only more recently with the implementation of LC-MS/MS and other modern technologies. The aim of this review was to examine the published data of the tear protein changes occurring during glaucoma, its topical treatment, and surgical interventions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this study is to investigate the potential benefits of using computer tools in engineering education. Animations, visual cueing, and their combination in a multimedia environment are designed to support learners' acquisition and retention of scientific concepts and processes. The software used in the development of the animations is Macromedia Flash, a tool that allows very small vectorial graphics files to be created, thus facilitating their electronic transmission to any user connected to the network. The research was conducted on 75 students of the first year at the Faculty of Civil Construction Management of the Union "Nikola Tesla" University, Belgrade, Serbia. The course was followed by a 3-year study to assess the acceptance of the computer tools and multimedia animations for learning mathematics. This research clearly showed that students were highly interested in this way of teaching and learning. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The role of cGMP (cyclic guanosine monophosphate) in the suppression of apoptosis in preantral and preovulatory follicles has been established. But the underlying mechanisms have not yet been established. The present study has been focused on revealing the mechanisms involved in the cGMP mediated suppression of apoptosis and in survival of ovarian follicle. cGMP reduces calcium burden of the cell by mediating Ca channels, BK (Big Potassium) channels, phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)/Akt pathway thus, prevents the mitochondrial membrane pore formation and apoptosis. cGMP induces the expression of Trx (thioredoxin) protein and prevents the TNF-α (Tumour Necrosis factor) induced apoptosis. cGMP also induces the expression of cytoskeleton proteins which are involved in heterogeneous distribution of mitochondria and there by reduces the Ca burden and apoptosis. Histone 3 lysine 4 methyltransferase (MLL2) is an epigenetic factor inhibits the transcription of genes involved apoptosis which acts as co-activator of Estrogen receptor-α. In conclusion the present review predicts some mechanisms underlying the cGMP mediated suppression of apoptosis in ovarian follicles. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Considering the increased speed at which the world population is aging, sarcopenia could become an epidemic in this century. This condition currently has no means of prevention or treatment. Melatonin is a highly effective and ubiquitously acting antioxidant and free radical scavenger that is normally produced in all organisms. This molecule has been implicated in a huge number of biological processes, from anticonvulsant properties in children to protective effects on the lung in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. In this review, we summarize the data which suggest that melatonin may be beneficial in attenuating, reducing or preventing each of the symptoms that characterize sarcopenia. The findings are not limited to sarcopenia, but also apply to osteoporosis-related sarcopenia and to age-related neuromuscular junction dysfunction. Since melatonin has a high safety profile and is drastically reduced in advanced age, its potential utility in the treatment of sarcopenic patients and related dysfunctions should be considered. With the maturation of strategic human resource management scholarship, there appears to be a greater call to move from monolithic workforce management to a more strategic and differentiated emphasis on employees with the greatest capacity to enhance competitive advantage. There has been little consideration in the literature as to whether organizations formally identify key groups of employees based on their impact on organizational learning and core competences. Using survey evidence from 260 multinational companies (MNCs), this paper explores the extent to which key groups of employees are formally recognized and whether they are subject to differential compensation practices. The results demonstrate that just in excess of half of these MNCs identify a key group. There was considerable differentiation in the compensation practices between these key groups, managers and the largest occupational group in the workforce. The results give rise to questions worthy of future investigation, namely whether the differentiated approaches used lead to improved performance outcomes. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Estimating urban trees growth, especially tree height is very important in urban landscape management. The aim of the study was to predict of tree height base on tree diameter. To achieve this goal, 921 trees from five species were measured in five areas of Mashhad city in 2014. The evaluated trees were ash tree (Fraxinus species), plane tree (Platanus hybrida), white mulberry (Morus alba), ailanthus tree (Ailanthus altissima) and false acacia tree (Robinia pseudoacacia). Regression analysis of tree height versus tree diameter revealed several models (linear, logarithmic, exponential and power) that could be used for estimating the tree height of these five species. The logarithmic, power and exponential functions provided a good fit to the data on tree height against tree diameter for ash tree (R
2 = 0.9 and RMSE = 0.74), ailanthus tree (R2 = 0.92 and RMSE = 0.44) and plane tree (R2 = 0.72 and RMSE = 0.72), respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

Although the human lifespan has increased in the past century owing to advances in medicine and lifestyle, the human healthspan has not kept up the same pace, especially in brain aging. Consequently, the role of preventive health interventions has become a crucial strategy, in particular, the identification of nutritional compounds that could alleviate the deleterious effects of aging. Among nutrients to cope with aging in special cognitive decline, the long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (ω-3 LCPUFAs) docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), have emerged as very promising ones. Due to their neuroinflammatory resolving effects, an increased status of DHA and EPA in the elderly has been linked to better cognitive function and a lower risk of dementia. However, the results from clinical studies do not show consistent evidence and intake recommendations for old adults are lacking. Recently, supplementation with structured forms of EPA and DHA, which can be derived natural forms or targeted structures, have proven enhanced bioavailability and powerful benefits. This review summarizes present and future perspectives of new structures of ω-3 LCPUFAs and the role of "omic" technologies combined with the use of high-throughput in vivo models to shed light on the relationships and underlying mechanisms between ω-3 LCPUFAs and healthy aging. - Abstract
Selective deconstructive functionalization of alkenes, other than the well-established olefin metathesis and ozonolysis, to produce densely functionalized molecular scaffolds is highly attractive but challenging. Here we report an efficient photo-mediated deconstructive germinal dihalogenation of carbon-carbon double bonds. A wide range of geminal diiodoalkanes and bromo(iodo)alkanes (>40 examples) are directly prepared from various trisubstituted alkenes, including both cyclic and acyclic olefins. This C=C cleavage is highly chemoselective and produces geminal dihalide ketones in good yields. Mechanistic investigations suggest a formation of alkyl hypoiodites from benzyl alcohols and N-iodoimides, which undergo light-induced homolytic cleavage to generate active oxygen radical species.

Although gender differences persist in the receipt of social support and the report of quality of life among people living with HIV/AIDS in Sub-Saharan Africa, the knowledge base on this topic is scant. For those living with HIV/AIDS, women tend to participate more than men in support group activities, but their gender predisposes them to lower quality of life. Therefore, this study seeks to determine what demographic factors moderate the relationship between social support and quality of life among those living with HIV/AIDS in Ghana. A convenience sample of 300 HIV/AIDS support group members who have experience participating in research studies and was obtained for use via cross-sectional design survey in September and October 2013. The Medical Outcome Studies (MOS) HIV Health Survey, the MOS Social Support Survey, and demographic questionnaire instruments were used to assess quality of life, social support, and demographic information respectively. Gender (male) F(3, 296) = 66.04, t = 2.26, p = .024) and having children (have children) (F(5, 294) = 40.34, t = 2.50, p = .013) moderated the relationship between social support and quality of life. Implications of the findings for practice, policy, and research in Ghana and the rest of the developing world were discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recent research indicates that bilingual children are more proficient in resolving cognitive conflict than monolinguals. However, the replicability of such findings has been questioned, with poor control of participants' socioeconomic status ( SES) as a possible confounding factor. Two experiments are reported here, in which the main attentional functions and pragmatic ability of 54 bilingual and 56 monolingual low- SES children were assessed (Experiment 1: 6- to 12-year-olds; Experiment 2: 6- to 8-year-olds). A language-switching task was also employed, to measure bilingual proficiency. Overall, the monolingual and bilingual groups did not differ significantly in any of the tasks employed, although the ability to resolve conflict was related to children's level of bilingual experience. The region of the Alto Valle del Río Negro located in the province of Río Negro, east of the Andes mountain range, is supplied with water that comes from the thaw, which is why it contains a small amount of iodine. An analysis was made of the environmental dynamics of the Alto Valle due to the geographical location, climate, latitude, longitude and the determination of the iodine concentration in the Black River, underground and network waters, as well as the seasonal variation. The objective of this study is to determine the concentration of iodine in the waters of the Upper Rio Negro Valley and to relate it to the variation of the serum values of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) and urinary iodine concentration. The novelty of this work consists of the iodine concentration values in the Negro river, underground and network waters in the four seasons of the year, which to date is not available, of interest in future research works. The environmental iodine in the waters of the Upper Rio Negro Valley suggests a seasonal variation that decreases from spring to winter coinciding with the urinary iodine concentrations, as has been published in previous studies, the concentrations of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) increase in the population. The TSH released by the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland (adenohypophysis) acts on the thyroid gland, inducing the synthesis of the thyroid hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). For this, it is necessary to have iodine in the body for the process of hormonal synthesis. This research may contribute to the knowledge of reference values as a starting point to clarify the influence of the environment on the metabolism of iodine in the people who live in the region; as well as the association between the seasonal variation of TSH values, CIU values and environmental factors.

- Abstract
The development and application of a membrane bioreactor (MBR) for full-scale municipal wastewater treatment is the most important recent technological advance in terms of biological wastewater treatment. The MBR is a suspended growth-activated sludge system that utilizes microporous membranes for solid/liquid separation instead of secondary clarifiers. It represents a decisive step forward concerning effluent quality by delivering a hygienically pure effluent and by exhibiting a very high operational reliability. Advanced MBR wastewater treatment technology is being successfully applied at an ever-increasing number of locations around the world. In this chapter, the authors have covered several aspects of MBR, with an exhaustive overview of its operational and biological performance. Different configurations and hydraulics of MBR are presented, with attention given to the fouling phenomenon and strategies for reducing it. Also, the high quality of MBR effluent is discussed, whereas in comparison with CAS removals of organic matter, ammonia, phosphorus, solids, bacteria and viruses are significantly enhanced. Emphasis has been given to the improved capability of MBR to remove organic contaminants present at trace concentration levels (ng L

Finally, advantages and disadvantages of MBR over CAS are concerned. In conclusion, MBR represents an efficient and cost-effective process that copes excellently with the growing needs for transforming wastewater into clean water that can be returned to the hydrological cycle without detrimental effects. The pampas deer Ozotoceros bezoarticus is a medium-sized, elegant, and lightly built cervid that was once a characteristic inhabitant of open grasslands across a wide geographical distribution in South America. In Argentina, the subspecies Ozotoceros bezoarticus celer is the most southern and abundant populations and relatively well represented in osteological collections permitting a morphometric study of cranial ontogeny. We measured 17 cranial variables on an ontogenetic series in order to evaluate the multivariate allometry of neurocranial and splanchnocranial components through developmental stages. The cranial ontogenetic pattern in O. b. celer exhibits a conservative plan in which both sexes share most of the allometric trends except in three variables related to the rostrum. Isometry was detected in 9 out of 17 variables, whereas four grows with negative allometry, and only nasal length showed positive allometry. As for most mammals, those variables related to the neurocranial components and sensorial capsules exhibit negative allometry. The growth of the rostrum indicates that both sexes have longer face than younger. However, the lack of allometry in most of the variables seems to be supporting the idea of a younger with the general appearance of an adult but smaller size. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

235. CONTRASTING LANGUAGES: THE CONTRASTIVE PROCEDURES AND SOME PRACTICAL SUGGESTIONS.
- Author
-
FIDA, Artan
- Abstract
The main focus of this paper is to present the general research procedures that any contrastive analyst should normally follow while working on the comparison between languages. The reasons for choosing this topic include: (i) some identified gaps on methodological aspects of the up-to-date contrastive linguistic research; (ii) increased number of the contrastive linguistic research with Albanian language being compared versus a large number of other foreign languages; (iii) lack of formation and training on the contrastive linguistics, both at the university and post-university level. The central part of the paper describes the methodological procedure adopted by the most prominent contrastive linguists such as R.Lado, W.Nemser & V.Ivir, T.Krzeszowski, P.Pierini, Ch.Fries, R.Whitman, M.Anwar, E.Zuanelli Sonino, C.James, R.Ellis, M.Gómez- González & S.M.Doval-Suárez, N.R.Garcia etc., as of mid 1950s up to date, as well as the necessary steps or phases which a linguistic contrastive analysis should go through. The author of the paper concludes with a set of practical tips to be considered during the linguistic contrastive research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mecolaesthus longissimus Simon, 1893 Figs 494–505, 1021, 1045 Mecolaesthus longissimus Simon, 1893a: 320. Mecolaesthus longissimus – Simon 1893b: 479–482. — Caporiacco 1955: 299. — Huber 1997d: 588, figs 12a–e, 13a–d; 2000: 256, figs 79, 136, 180, 1014–1023; 2005a: 573–581, figs 1–8. — González- Sponga 2010: 18, pl. 4, figs 1–11. Notes In a first redescription of the species (Huber 1997d), a lectotype was chosen from the type series (MNHN, E. Simon collection number 11024). In this vial, specimens from two localities (Colonia Tovar and Corosal) had been joined by E. Simon, without specifying the numbers of specimens from each locality. This vial contains 13 ♂♂, one of which deviates in its cheliceral armature (by the presence of an additional pair of apophyses, cf. Huber 1997d: fig. 12e; Huber 2000: fig. 1018; González-Sponga 2010: pl. 4, fig. 3). Extensive new material from near Colonia Tovar (Huber 2005a and below) suggests that the majority of the males in the type vial (including the lectotype) are from Colonia Tovar and that the deviating male is from Corosal. The type locality can therefore be specified more precisely as Colonia Tovar. Whether or not males with the additional pair of apophyses represent a distinct species remains an open question. The redescriptions in Huber (2000) and González-Sponga (2010) are based on such specimens. A comparison of the illustrations in Huber (2000: figs 1019–1023) with Figs 499–505 (made from topotypical specimens) suggests that additional morphological differences exist. No fresh material is available of the ‘deviating morph’, but we predict that a detailed morphological comparison combined with molecular data may eventually justify a formal split of this species. The material published by González-Sponga (2010) is present in the MIZA collection but the respective collection cards are missing so it is not clear which vial represents which locality listed in González- Sponga (2010). The following seven vials are thought to represent this material (specimen counts partly approximate): 9 ♂♂, MIZA 105702 (MAGS 244); 2 ♂♂, 4 ♀♀, MIZA 105740 (MAGS 964); 1 ♀, MIZA 105688 (MAGS 965); 1 ♂, 1 ♀, 1 juv., MIZA 105610 (MAGS 1023); 9 ♂♂, 3 ♀♀, 12 juvs, MIZA 105597 (MAGS 1039); 4 ♂♂, 4 ♀♀, MIZA 105631 (MAGS 1088); 4 ♂♂, 6 ♀♀, 5 juvs, MIZA 105635 (MAGS 1091). This material supposedly originates from the following localities: La Guaira: Hacienda El Limón [10.475° N, 67.283° W] Miranda: Hacienda Santa Rosa, 8 km N Guatire [approximately 10.53° N, 66.56° W] Miranda: Hacienda Salmerón [approximately 10.483° N, 66.367° W] Miranda: Guatopo National Park, Boca de Cura [10.20° N, 66.30° W] Miranda: Guatopo National Park, Panaquire [10.216° N, 66.239° W] Miranda: Guatopo National Park, Macanilla [locality not identified] We have not checked Caporiacco’s (1955) female specimen. However, a male from the same locality (Rancho Grande, Aragua) was studied in Huber (2000), so we consider Caporiacco’s record as possibly correct. Description (amendments; see Huber 1997d, 2000, 2005a) Eye measurements (male from Colonia Tovar): distance PME–PME 130 µm; diameter PME 120 µm; distance PME–ALE 80 µm; diameter AME 35 µm; distance AME–AME 20 µm. Tibia 1 measurements (specimens from Colonia Tovar in Huber 2005a and specimens listed below) in 56 males: 10.3–12.8 (mean 11.5); in 33 females: 6.6–8.5 (mean 7.5). All males from Colonia Tovar with dark median band on carapace and dark ochre to black ocular area and clypeus, without lateral dark bands; legs in males without or with very indistinct dark rings, in females with dark rings on femora subdistally and on tibiae proximally and subdistally; abdomen without brown anterior plate(s), book-lung covers in males variable (not darkened to brown), in females never brown. Coxa 4 unmodified. Prolateral trichobothrium present on all leg tibiae. Procursus (Figs 500–502) with large dorsal process proximally, small retrolateral apophysis, and distinctive tip with dorsal and ventral sclerites connected by transparent membrane and prolateral process with tiny scales. Genital bulb (Figs 503–505) with large distal process partly membranous/whitish, partly with distinctive sclerites. Epigynum (Fig. 497) consisting of small brown plate surrounded by whitish membranous cuticle, with distinctive pair of anterior internal structures visible in uncleared specimens; posterior plate slender transversal sclerite widening laterally. Internal genitalia complex and difficult to understand, with pair of semispherical pore plates, possible median duct and receptacle (Figs 498–499). Distribution Common in – and apparently restricted to – the Coastal Ranges in Venezuela (Fig. 1045). Natural history In Colonia Tovar, the spiders were found in a well-preserved forest above the town; between Colonia Tovar and El Junquito they were found in a forest remnant close to a small stream. At both localities, the distribution appeared to be very patchy. During our second visit to Colonia Tovar in 2018 we tried to revisit the spot from the 2002 trip but could not locate it and did not find a single specimen of M. longissimus (even though the forest looked exactly as in 2002). Between Colonia Tovar and El Junquito, the species was abundant in a small area at the stream but apparently absent from nearby parts of the forest. The spiders were collected from strongly domed webs with a diameter of ~ 20 cm, between about 20 cm to 150 cm above the ground. When disturbed the spiders vibrated vigorously in their webs but did not drop to the ground. In Henri Pittier National Park the species was abundant, often in exposed webs up to 1.5 m above the ground. One large male was introduced to the web of another large male. Within a minute, the two males started to fight, first with their front legs only. Then each male made a few vigorous jerks with the abdomen, flexing it strongly and rapidly toward ventral, but without contacting the opponent. After this, one male left toward the periphery of the web and both males remained silent. This observation supports the idea than males of this species use their extremely elongated (and positively allometric) abdomens in male-male fights (Huber 2005a)., Published as part of Huber, Bernhard A. & Villarreal, Osvaldo, 2020, On Venezuelan pholcid spiders (Araneae, Pholcidae), pp. 1-317 in European Journal of Taxonomy 718 on pages 139-142, DOI: 10.5852/ejt.2020.718.1101, http://zenodo.org/record/4069574, {"references":["Simon E. 1893 a. The coencapsulation of two UV filters, butyl-methoxydibenzoylmethane ( BMDBM) and octocrylene ( OCT), into lipid nanocarriers was explored to develop stable cosmetic formulations with broad-spectrum photoprotection and slow release properties. Different types of nanocarriers in various concentrations of the two UV filters were tested to find the combination with the best absorption and release properties. Solid lipid nanoparticles ( SLNs) and nanostructured lipid carriers ( NLCs) have been the two types of lipid nanocarriers used. The NLCs were based on either medium chain triglycerides ( MCT) or squalene ( Sq). The following physicochemical properties of the nanocarriers have been evaluated: particle size, morphology, zeta potential (ZP), entrapment efficiency, loading capacity, and thermal behavior. The nanocarriers have been formulated into creams containing low amounts of UV filters (2.5% BMDBM and 1% OCT). The best photoprotection results were obtained with the cream based on NLCs prepared with MCT, having a sun protection factor ( SPF) of 17.2 and an erythemal UVA protection factor ( EUVA- PF) of 50.8. The photostability of the encapsulated BMDBM filter was confirmed by subjecting the nanocarriers-based creams to in vitro irradiation. The prolonged UV-protection efficacy was coupled with a slow in vitro release of the synthetic UV filters, which followed the Higuchi release model. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

High Performance Work Systems are designed to enhance organizational performance by improving employee capability, commitment, and productivity. Yet there is very little consensus about the structure of these systems and the practices therein. The lack of structure may be inhibiting the growth of knowledge in this field and the degree to which organizations adopt these systems. To address these concerns we develop a comprehensive High Performance Work Practices (HPWPs) taxonomy. We analyzed 193 peer-reviewed articles published over the past 20 years (1992-2011). We classified 61 specific practices into nine categories. We analyze the usefulness of this taxonomy using frequency, time, and countries. Directions for future research are provided. The current research explores the relationship between L2 lexical knowledge and working memory on the written performance of argumentative writing by Chinese learners of English as a foreign language (EFL). There are two independent variables and one dependent variable in this study: L2 lexical knowledge consists of productive vocabulary knowledge, vocabulary size, and depth of vocabulary knowledge; working memory as indexed by the operation span task; and written performance in two argumentative tasks (indexed by accuracy, fluency and complexity). The results show that (a) productive vocabulary knowledge has a significant effect on fluency and accuracy but no effect on complexity of the written language production; (b) working memory exerts a considerable effect on fluency and syntactic complexity while it has no effect on accuracy and lexical complexity of the written language production; and (c) working memory affects productive vocabulary knowledge in that the learners with middle and low working memory capacity are more prone to be affected by productive vocabulary knowledge in the written production.
