Two new species of genus Pheronemoides are described in this study. The Specimens were collected from the South China sea and the Caroline seamount in the northwestern Pacific Ocean. Pheronemoides crustiformis sp. nov. differs from its congeners in exhibiting large microamphidiscs, whip-like and slightly bent microuncinates and small spiny microdiactins. Pheronemoides curvipentactin sp. nov. possesses special pentactine atrialia with round terminal or tapering terminal curved pinular rays and crooked pentactins, making it easily distinguishable from its congeners. Partial sequences of the 28S rDNA and 16S rDNA genes were also amplified to confirm the family assignment of the two new species and to explore the systematic status of Pheronemoides.

Bullying victimization at school is an important concern in terms of mental health, in particular, for deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) adolescents who may be more vulnerable than hearing peers. This study determined the prevalence of bullying victimization among DHH adolescents in Taiwan and ascertained the relation of bullying victimization experiences and family and school variables with their psychological well-being. Data were collected from the 2011 Special Needs Education Longitudinal Study database. Multivariate regression analysis was performed on variables comprising seven items measuring psychological distress; four types of bullying victimizations; and family-, school-, and peer-related factors. Approximately 65% of DHH adolescents experienced at least one type of bullying victimization. Factors such as exclusion bullying, female gender, delayed bedtime, conflicts with parents, unfavorable relationship with parents, inability to get along with friends, dislike for school, and bullying victimization experiences increased psychological distress in the DHH adolescents. Bullying victimization of DHH adolescents is a risk factor for poor mental health. However, a good relationship of these adolescents with their parents and peers could be protective for their psychological well-being. Therefore, parents and teachers should understand the needs of DHH adolescents and establish antibullying strategies to diminish their mental health problems.

Oceanic chlorophyll-a concentration (Chl, mg m−3) maps derived from satellite ocean color measurements are the only data source which provides synoptic information of phytoplankton abundance on global scale. However, after excluding data collected under non-optimal observing conditions such as strong sun glint, clouds, thick aerosols, straylight, and large viewing angles, only ~5% of MODIS ocean measurements lead to valid Chl retrievals, regardless of the fact that about 25–30% of the global ocean is cloud free. A recently developed ocean color index (CI) is effective in deriving relative ocean color patterns under most non-optimal observing conditions to improve coverage, but these patterns cannot be interpreted as Chl. In this study, we combine the advantage of the high-quality, low-coverage Chl and lower-quality, higher-coverage CI to improve spatial and temporal coverage of Chl through machine learning, specifically via a random forest based regression ensemble (RFRE) approach. For every MODIS scene, the machine learning requires CI, Rayleigh-corrected reflectance (Rrc (λ = 469, 555, 645 nm), dimensionless), and high-quality low-coverage Chl from the common pixels where they all have valid data to develop an RFRE-based model to convert CI and Rrc (λ) to Chl. The model is then applied to all valid CI pixels of the same scene to derive Chl. This process is repeated for each scene, and the model parameterization is optimized for each scene independently. The approach has been tested for the Yellow Sea and East China Sea (YSECS) where non-optimal observing conditions frequently occur. Validations using extensive field measurements and image-based statistics for 2017 show very promising results, where coverage in the new Chl maps is increased by ~3.5 times without noticeable degradation in quality as compared with the original Chl data products. The improvement in Chl coverage without compromising data quality is not only critical in revealing otherwise unknown bloom patterns, but also important in reducing uncertainties in time-series analysis. Tests of the RFRE approach for several other regions such as the East Caribbean, Arabian Sea, and Gulf of Mexico suggest its general applicability in improving Chl coverage of other regions.

Small water bodies are an important part of the Earth’s freshwater system, protecting biodiversity and providing ecosystem services. Because of various surrounding features, it is unknown to what extent we can obtain accurate remote-sensing reflectance ( R rs ) of such an environment by the conventional above-water approach (AWA). In this study, we used both AWA and the skylight-blocked approach (SBA) side-by-side to measure R rs in a typical small water body. It was found that the variation of R rs in the UV-blue domain from AWA is around 50% and is inconsistent with the variation of the total absorption coefficient ( a t ) obtained from water samples; on the contrary, the variation of R rs obtained from SBA is highly consistent, with a coefficient of variation under ∼ 5 % . These results highlight the large uncertainties in the measured R rs from AWA due to the complexity of such an environment and further echo the robustness of SBA to measure R rs in the field, even in such challenge environments.

Background This study investigated the prevalence of labial bone perforation (LBP) related to the associated anatomic factors in anterior mandibular region using a virtual immediate implant placement procedure. Methods Series qualified CBCT images of 149 participants (894 teeth) were selected to analyze the assigned anatomical parameters, including concavity depth, concavity angle, torque, and deep bone thickness. Four classes of crestal and radicular dentoalveolar bone phenotypes (CRDAPs) of mandibular anterior teeth were categorized according to the thickness of dentoalveolar bone at both crestal and radicular zones. Data were adjusted for categorical (gender and CRDAP) and continuous (age, cavity angle, cavity depth, and deep bone thickness) variables using a multivariable logistic regression analysis with generalized estimating equation method. Results The overall probability of LBP after virtual implant placement was 21.6%. There is statistically significant higher prevalence of LBP at canine (28.5%) and CRDAP class II (29.2%) regions (p < 0.001). After adjusting confounding variables, CRDAP class II and class IV regions are more likely to have LBP when compared with CRDAP class I (control) regions (p < 0.01). The risk of LBP at canine site is 6.31 times more likely than at the central incisor (control) (p < 0.01). Conclusions Using a virtual immediate implant placement technique, the prevalence of LBP is significantly higher at the mandibular canine site and thin radicular dentoalveolar phenotype in the anterior mandibular region.

Background: The theory of planned behaviour (TPB) explanation of smoking cessation intentions consists of gender differences. The purpose of this study is to adopt the extended TPB to discuss factors influencing the smoking cessation intentions of young adult volunteer soldiers and to further compare the respective factors for both genders. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study. Data were collected from 139 and 165 male and female volunteer soldiers who smoked, respectively. Research participants completed a self-administered questionnaire that comprised items pertaining to the participants’ demographic characteristics, smoking behaviours, smoking cessation experiences, social environments, and TPB variables. Results: Subjective norms (friends) are a positive key factor for young adult male (β = 0.033, p = 0.012) and female (β = 0.076, p &lt, 0.001) volunteer soldiers’ smoking cessation intentions, and perceived behavioural control is a key factor for male young (β = 0.226, p = 0.040) adult volunteer soldiers’ smoking cessation intention. The extended TPB accounted for 27.9% and 53.2% of the variance in the intention to quit smoking in the male and female volunteer soldiers, respectively. Conclusions: We suggest that smoking cessation strategies can reinforce gender-specific intervention strategies to assist young adult volunteer soldiers in smoking cessation.

There remains controversy regarding whether the growth charts constructed from data of term infants, such as those produced by the World Health Organization (WHO) standards, can appropriately evaluate the postnatal growth of preterm infants. This retrospective cohort study, conducted in the First Affiliated Hospital of Shandong First Medical University in Jinan China, aimed to compare the postnatal growth charts of singleton preterm and term infants using WHO standards at 40–160 weeks postmenstrual age (PMA). A total of 5,459 and 15,185 sets of longitudinal measurements [length/height, weight, head circumference (HC), and body mass index (BMI)] from birth to 160 weeks PMA were used to construct growth charts for 559 singleton preterm (mean PMA at birth, 33.84 weeks) and 1,596 singleton term infants (born at 40 weeks PMA), respectively, using the Generalized Additive Models for Location, Scale, and Shape (GAMLSS) method. Z-scores (prematurity corrected) were calculated using WHO Anthro software. Compared to WHO standards, all parameters of preterm infants were increased, especially in terms of length/height and weight; the gap between the two almost spanned two adjacent centile curves. Compared to term controls, the length/height, weight, and BMI of preterm infants were higher at 40 weeks PMA, surpassed by term infants at 52–64 weeks PMA, and quite consistent thereafter. The HC of preterm infants at 40–160 weeks PMA was quite consistent with both term controls and the WHO standards. The Z-scores for length/height, weight, and BMI of preterm infants relative to the WHO standards gradually decreased from 1.20, 1.13, and 0.74 at 40–44 weeks PMA to 0.67, 0.42, and 0.03 at 132–160 weeks PMA, respectively; Z-scores for HC of preterm infants rapidly decreased from 0.73 to 0.29 at 40–50 weeks PMA, and then fluctuated in the range of 0.08–0.23 at 50–160 weeks PMA. Preterm infants had higher growth trajectories than the WHO standards and similar but not identical trajectories to term infants during the first 2 years of life. These findings reemphasize the necessity of constructing local growth charts for Chinese singleton preterm infants.

Accurate determination of the water-leaving radiance ( L w ) is key to correctly interpret in-water optical properties and to validate the atmospheric correction schemes in ocean color studies. Among the various approaches adopted to measure L w in the field, the skylight-blocked approach (SBA) is the only scheme that can potentially measure L w directly. However, the apparatus associated with an SBA system will introduce self-shading effects to the measured L w , which is required to be corrected for an accurate L w determination. In this study, we experimentally evaluate several factors that could contribute to the self-shading effects of the SBA-measured L w , including solar zenith angle ( ∼ 18 ∘ − 64 ∘ ), water’s optical properties, and cone size (radius of 22 mm and 45 mm). For waters with the total absorption coefficient at 440 nm as high as ∼ 6.0 m − 1 , the normalized root-mean-square difference between the SBA-measured L w after shade correction and the “true” L w is generally between ∼ 5 % and ∼ 10 % for wavelengths in the range of 400–750 nm. These results suggest that SBA can obtain highly accurate and precise L w in nearly all natural aquatic environments.

Background & aims: Stroke involving the brainstem (SBS) causes severe oropharyngeal dysphagia (OD). Research on the therapeutic efficacy of vagus nerve modulation (VNM) by using repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) in SBS patients with OD has been limited thus far. We aimed to assess the effect of VNM by using rTMS in improving swallowing function after SBS. Method: We conducted a sham-controlled, double-blinded, parallel pilot study in 28 SBS patients with OD randomly allocated to a real rTMS group (n = 13; TMSreal) or a sham group (n = 15; TMSsham). For VNM, 5-Hz rTMS was applied to the left mastoid in 10 sessions. We evaluated all patients for swallowing function before and after rTMS conditioning, assessed on the 8-point Penetration–Aspiration Scale (PAS) through videofluoroscopy and the Australian Therapy Outcome Measures–Swallowing scale (AusTOMs). We measured the amplitude and latency of cricopharyngeal motor evoked potentials (CP-MEPs) as the neurophysiological parameters.
