224. Accurate OH maser positions II. the Galactic Center region

Abstract

We present high spatial resolution observations of ground-state OH masers, achieved using the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA). These observations were conducted towards 171 pointing centres, where OH maser candidates were identified previously in the Southern Parkes Large-Area Survey in Hydroxyl (SPLASH) towards the Galactic Center region, between Galactic longitudes of $355^{\circ}$ and $5^{\circ}$ and Galactic latitudes of $-2^{\circ}$ and $+2^{\circ}$. We detect maser emission towards 162 target fields and suggest that 6 out of 9 non-detections are due to intrinsic variability. Due to the superior spatial resolution of the follow-up ATCA observations, we have identified 356 OH maser sites in the 162 of the target fields with maser detections. Almost half (161 of 356) of these maser sites have been detected for the first time in these observations. After comparing the positions of these 356 maser sites to the literature, we find that 269 (76\%) sites are associated with evolved stars (two of which are planetary nebulae), 31 (9\%) are associated with star formation, four are associated with supernova remnants and we were unable to determine the origin of the remaining 52 (15\%) sites. Unlike the pilot region (\citealt{Qie2016a}), the infrared colors of evolved star sites with symmetric maser profiles in the 1612 MHz transition do not show obvious differences compared with those of evolved star sites with asymmetric maser profiles., Comment: 24 pages, 12 figures, accepted by ApJS

Abstract

Water fountains are evolved stars showing early stages of collimated mass loss during transition from the asymptotic giant branch, providing valuable insight into the formation of asymmetric planetary nebulae. We report the results of multi-epoch VLBI observations, which determine the spatial and three-dimensional kinematic structure of H2O masers associated with the water fountain IRAS 18113-2503. The masers trace three pairs of high-velocity (~150-300 km/s) bipolar bow shocks on a scale of 0.18'' (~2000 au). The expansion velocities of the bow shocks exhibit an exponential decrease as a function of distance from the central star, which can be explained by an episodic, jet-driven outflow decelerating due to drag forces in a circumstellar envelope. Using our model, we estimate an initial ejection velocity ~840 km/s, a period for the ejections ~10 yr, with the youngest being ~12 yr old, and an average envelope density within the H2O maser region n(H2) ~ 10^6 cm^(-3). Abstract

In this work, I investigate several combinatorial properties of Borel (or co-analytic) ideals on countable sets. I extend a theorem presented in M. Hru\v{s}\'{a}k, D. Meza-Alc\'antara, E. Th\"ummel, and C. Uzc\'ategui, \emph{Ramsey Type Properties of Ideals}, and also find an $F_\sigma$ tall ideal in which player II has a winning strategy in the Cut and Choose Game, which was a question posed by J. Zapletal. In the second section, I present some Ramsey properties of ideals, such as the previously known fact that the random graph ideal is critical for the Ramsey property (for subsets of size two and colorings with two colors) and construct a critical ideal for every Ramsey property. The third section includes comments on the Solecki ideal, and in the fourth section, I discover an $F_\sigma$ tall $K$-uniform ideal that is not equivalent to $\mathcal{ ED }_{fin}$, which is a question from Michael Hru\v{s}\'ak's., Comment: 28 pages

Abstract

We present continuum and molecular line (CO, C$^{18}$O, HCO$^+$) observations carried out with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array toward the "water fountain" star IRAS 15103-5754, an object that could be the youngest PN known. We detect two continuum sources, separated by $0.39\pm 0.03$ arcsec. The emission from the brighter source seems to arise mainly from ionized gas, thus confirming the PN nature of the object. The molecular line emission is dominated by a circumstellar torus with a diameter of $\simeq 0.6$ arcsec (2000 au) and expanding at $\simeq 23$ km s$^{-1}$. We see at least two gas outflows. The highest-velocity outflow (deprojected velocities up to 250 km s$^{-1}$), traced by the CO lines, shows a biconical morphology, whose axis is misaligned $\simeq 14^\circ$ with respect to the symmetry axis of the torus, and with a different central velocity (by $\simeq 8$ km s$^{-1}$). An additional high-density outflow (traced by HCO$^+$) is oriented nearly perpendicular to the torus. We speculate that IRAS 15103-5754 was a triple stellar system that went through a common envelope phase, and one of the components was ejected in this process. A subsequent low-collimation wind from the remaining binary stripped out gas from the torus, creating the conical outflow. Abstract

Our understanding of protoplanetary disks is rapidly departing from the classical view of a smooth, axisymmetric disk. This is in part thanks to the high angular resolution that (sub)mm observations can provide. Here we present the combined results of ALMA (0.9 mm) and VLA (7 mm) dust continuum observations toward the protoplanetary disk around the solar analogue GM Aur. Both images clearly resolve the $\sim$35 au inner cavity. The ALMA observations also reveal a fainter disk that extends up to $\sim250$ au. We model our observations using two approaches: an analytical fit to the observed deprojected visibilities, and a physical disk model that fits the SED as well as the VLA and ALMA observations. Despite not being evident in the deconvolved images, the VLA and ALMA visibilities can only be fitted with two bright rings of radii $\sim$40 and $\sim$80 au. Our physical model indicates that this morphology is the result of an accumulation or trapping of large dust grains, probably due to the presence of two pressure bumps in the disk. Even though alternative mechanisms cannot be discarded, the multiple rings suggest that forming planets may have cleared at least two gaps in the disk. Finally, our analysis suggests that the inner cavity might display different sizes at 0.9 mm and 7 mm. This discrepancy could be caused by the presence of free-free emission close to the star at 7 mm, or by a more compact accumulation of the large dust grains at the edge of the cavity., Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Abstract

We analyze the linear polarization of the relativistic jet in BL Lacertae object OJ~287 as revealed by multi-epoch Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) images at 43 GHz and monitoring observations at optical bands. The electric-vector position angle (EVPA) of the optical polarization matches that at 43 GHz at locations that are often in the compact millimeter-wave "core" or, at other epochs, coincident with a bright, quasi-stationary emission feature $\sim0.2$~milliarcsec ($\sim$0.9~pc projected on the sky) downstream from the core. This implies that electrons with high enough energies to emit optical synchrotron and $\gamma$-ray inverse Compton radiation are accelerated both in the core and at the downstream feature, the latter of which lies $\geq10$~pc from the central engine. We briefly introduce the VLBI maser astrometric analysis of IRAS 18043-2116 and IRAS 18113-2503, two remarkable and unusual water fountains with spectacular bipolar bow shocks in their high-speed collimated jet-driven outflows. Abstract

We present relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (RMHD) simulations of stationary overpressured magnetized relativistic jets which are characterized by their dominant type of energy, namely internal, kinetic, or magnetic. Each model is threaded by a helical magnetic field with a pitch angle of $45^\circ$ and features a series of recollimation shocks produced by the initial pressure mismatch, whose strength and number varies as a function of the dominant type of energy. We perform a study of the polarization signatures from these models by integrating the radiative transfer equations for synchrotron radiation using as inputs the RMHD solutions. These simulations show a top-down emission asymmetry produced by the helical magnetic field and a progressive confinement of the emission into a jet spine as the magnetization increases and the internal energy of the non-thermal population is considered to be a constant fraction of the thermal one. Bright stationary components associated with the recollimation shocks appear presenting a relative intensity modulated by the Doppler boosting ratio between the pre-shock and post-shock states. Small viewing angles show a roughly bimodal distribution in the polarization angle due to the helical structure of the magnetic field, which is also responsible for the highly stratified degree of linear polarization across the jet width. In addition, small variations of the order of $26^\circ$ are observed in the polarization angle of the stationary components, which can be used to identify recollimation shocks in astrophysical jets., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We present total and linearly polarized 3 mm Global mm-VLBI Array images of a sample of blazars and radio galaxies from the VLBA-BU-BLAZAR 7 mm monitoring program designed to probe the innermost regions of active galactic nuclei (AGN) jets and locate the sites of gamma-ray emission observed by the Fermi-LAT. The lower opacity at 3 mm and improved angular resolution, on the order of 50 microarcseconds, allow us to distinguish features in the jet not visible in the 7 mm VLBA data. Abstract

We analyze the parsec-scale jet kinematics from 2007 June to 2013 January of a sample of $\gamma$-ray bright blazars monitored roughly monthly with the Very Long Baseline Array at 43~GHz. In a total of 1929 images, we measure apparent speeds of 252 emission knots in 21 quasars, 12 BL~Lacertae objects (BLLacs), and 3 radio galaxies, ranging from 0.02$c$ to 78$c$; 21\% of the knots are quasi-stationary. Approximately 1/3 of the moving knots execute non-ballistic motions, with the quasars exhibiting acceleration along the jet within 5~pc (projected) of the core, and knots in the BLLacs tending to decelerate near the core. Using apparent speeds of components and timescales of variability from their light curves, we derive physical parameters of 120 superluminal knots, including variability Doppler factors, Lorentz factors, and viewing angles. We estimate the half-opening angle of each jet based on the projected opening angle and scatter of intrinsic viewing angles of knots. We determine characteristic values of physical parameters for each jet and AGN class based on the range of values obtained for individual features. We calculate intrinsic brightness temperatures of the cores, $T_{\rm b,int}^{\rm core}$, at all epochs, finding that the radio galaxies usually maintain equipartition conditions in the cores, while $\sim$30\% of $T_{\rm b,int}^{\rm core}$ measurements in the quasars and BLLacs deviate from equipartition values by a factor $>$10. This probably occurs during transient events connected with active states. Abstract

High field superconducting magnets for particle accelerators often exhibit premature quenches. Once a normal zone is generated within the conductor, the quench may propagate causing temperature and resistive voltage rise along the coil. The resulting thermal gradients can potentially cause new peak stresses that might exceed the tolerable limits, degrading the conductor. The computation of the strain state in the coils during quench then becomes of paramount importance for magnet design, and requires a complete three-dimensional (3-D) analysis of quench phenomena. The objective of this paper is to present the first multiphysics modeling activities towards a new full 3-D methodology for the analysis of magnet mechanics during quench. As a first step, a 3-D thermal-electric finite element model of a Nb3Sn superconducting coil is developed and explained here. The model uses direct coupled-field elements to solve the system of thermal and electrical equations. A solving algorithm has also been implemented in order to investigate the physics behind quench transients. The output from this model, built in ANSYS APDL, can be easily coupled in a later stage to a mechanical model in order to estimate the strain state in the coil windings. A very good agreement has been observed between the numerical results and experimental tests performed in individual superconducting cables and real superconducting magnets.

Abstract

The large introductory classes at many universities present a particular challenge for instructors wishing to guarantee participation opportunities for their students. Yet, large courses can actually afford advantages for instructors looking to replicate many features of the U.S. Congress. We describe two separate Congressional simulations in an Introduction to American Politics class of more than 300 students, including simulated committee hearings and markup, as well as a floor debate. We demonstrate how simulations can be scaled to classes of almost any size, regardless of whether they include teaching assistants.
