The aim of this study is to investigate the influence of hand gestures on the perception and psychosocial evaluation in terms of warmth and competence of the speaker by the listener. Participants partook in a face-to-face conversation with a confederate and then evaluated her/him. Confederates manipulated four types of gestures (beats, cohesive, illustrators, and self-adaptors, plus a no-gesture condition) and two conversational strategies (ludic, goal-oriented). Results show that, depending on the gesture, naïve people change their judgement of warmth and competence on the gesture and of warmth on the confederate while, contrary to what expected, the effect of gestures was not moderated by strategy. Our experiment shows that hand gestures not only improve the efficacy of communication but also influence the psychosocial evaluation of the speaker by the listener.

Herein, the authors report a study conducted by atomic force microscopy and Raman spectroscopy on the deposition of carbon dots onto graphene surfaces. The study aims at understanding if and how the morphology and the microstructure of chemical vapor deposited graphene on Si/SiO2 may change due to the interaction with the carbon dots. Potential alteration in the graphene's electrical properties might be detrimental for optoelectronic applications. The deposition of carbon dots dispersed in water and ethanol solvents are explored to investigate the effect of solvents with different fluidic properties. The obtained results indicate that the carbon dots do not alter the quality of graphene.

Schottky-barrier solar cells (SBSCs) represent low-cost candidates for photovoltaics applications. The engineering of the interface between absorber and front electrode is crucial for reducing the dark current, blocking the majority carriers injected into the electrode, and reducing surface recombination. The presence of tailored interfacial layers between the metal electrode and the semiconductor absorber can improve the cell performance. In this work, the interface of a graphene/n-type Si SBSC by introducing a graphene-based derivative (GBD) layer meant to reduce the Schottky-barrier height (SBH) and ease the charge collection are engineered. The chemical vapor deposition (CVD) parameters are tuned to obtain the two graphene films with different structure and electrical properties: few-layer graphene (FLG) working as transparent conductive electrode and GBD layer with electron-blocking and hole-transporting properties. Test SBSCs are fabricated to evaluate the effect of the introduction of GBD as interlayer into the FLG/n-Si junction. The GBD layer reduces the recombination at the interface between graphene and n-Si, and improves the external quantum efficiency (EQE) with optical bias from 50 to 60%. The FLG/GBD/n-Si cell attains a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of ≈5%, which increase to 6.7% after a doping treatment by nitric acid vapor.

Research has shown that the Comparable Truth Baseline Technique outperforms the Small Talk with respect to the elicitation of cues to deception. However, their impact on observers’ accuracy has not been evaluated yet. In this experiment, participants (N = 74) watched ten interviews where senders either lied or told the truth about a set of tasks. Half of the interviews were conducted with a Comparable Truth Baseline, the other half with a Small Talk Baseline. As predicted, results showed that observers in the Comparable Truth Baseline condition outperformed the participants in the Small Talk Baseline condition in terms of total accuracy rates. The paper sheds light on the impact of the two baseline techniques in distinguishing truth tellers from liars and discourages the use of a small talk baseline. It also provides insights for future studies.

Objectives: The nine-item Problematic Internet Use Questionnaire (PIUQ-9) is a brief self-report screening instrument for problematic internet use. The main objective of the present study was to explore the psychometric properties of the PIUQ-9 among nine different language-based samples of European internet users (Italian, German, French, Polish, Turkish, Hungarian, English, and Greek). Methods: The total sample comprised 5,593 internet users (38.1% men), aged between 18 and 87 years (M = 25.81; SD = 8.61). Via online recruitment, participants completed the PIUQ-9, the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI) and items about time spent online. Results: Confirmatory factor analysis demonstrated that the bifactor model with one general factor (i.e., general problem) and two-specific factors (i.e., obsession and neglect + control disorder) yielded acceptable or good fit indices in all subsamples except for one. The common variance index in the bifactor model indicated that the general problem factor explained from 57.0 to 76.5% of common variance, which supports the presence of a strong global factor. According to the multiple indicators multiple causes (MIMIC) model, psychiatric symptoms had a moderate-to-strong direct effect on the general problem factor in all subsamples, ranging from β = 0.28 to β = 0.52 supporting the construct validity of the scale. Furthermore, in a majority of the subsamples, time spent online during the weekend had considerably higher effect sizes on the general problem factor than time spent online during weekdays. This study offers the first comprehensive review of the Tempietto in Ethiopian art. The motif was an indispensable feature in illustrated Ethiopic Gospel books, appearing systematically as an explicit to the Eusebian apparatus in manuscripts from the Christian Aksumite to the early Solomonic Period. While the Ethiopic version of Eusebius’s Letter to Carpianus and the canon tables have attracted considerable scholarly interest, the Ethiopian iconography of the Tempietto has not yet received the attention it deserves. By analysing the iconography of the Tempietto in Ethiopic gospel books this work shows how it is possible to offer a partial reconstruction of the practices of illuminators in Ethiopia in the century following the rise of the Solomonic dynasty, providing important insights into the elusive question of the development of manuscript illumination in Ethiopia.

For 15 to 30% of infertile couples, no etiology can be found, leading to the diagnosis of "unexplained infertility". The aim of our study was to identify prognostic factors for live birth following in vitro fertilization (IVF) for these couples.A retrospective, monocentric study on a cohort of couples undergoing IVF for unexplained infertility with the woman aged≤40 years old. Primary analysis compared couples with a live birth following IVF versus childless couples following IVF.Between January 2014 and December 2018, 104 couples were included, 196 transvaginal oocyte pickup were performed, followed by 234 embryo transfers (fresh or cryopreserved) which resulted in 43 deliveries. The cumulative live birth rate was 40.4% per couple. Before IVF attempts, no clinical or paraclinical prognostic factors between the two groups was observed. However, multivariate analysis showed several biological factors of good prognosis in course of treatment, such as a higher number of mature oocytes and better quality embryos in "live birth" group.For a couple, the chances of having a child following IVF unexplained infertility are 40.4%. However, no clinical characteristic enabled us to identify favourable or unfavourable prognosis factors before starting ART. The prognostic factors identified during IVF cycle are interesting to advise or not to pursue IVF.

ObjectiveTo examine the impact of ethanol sclerotherapy (EST) for endometrioma on in vitro fertilization (IVF) cumulative live birth rates (CLBR) in women with moderate-severe endometriosis.MethodsThis retrospective cohort study included women with moderate-severe endometriosis (revised American Fertility Society stage III-IV) and endometrioma who underwent IVF with the ultra-long agonist protocol. We compared two groups: women undergoing EST for endometrioma before IVF (EST group), and women whose endometrioma was left in situ during IVF (No-EST group). The primary outcome was the CLBR per IVF cycle, including fresh and frozen embryo transfers. The secondary endpoints included the complication rate, number of mature oocytes retrieved, clinical pregnancy rate and pregnancy loss rate.ResultsSeventy-four women were included in the study, with 37 in the EST group and 37 in the No-EST group, representing 67 and 69 IVF cycles, respectively. The population and cycle characteristics were comparable between the two groups, especially the ovarian response to stimulation. The CLBR was significantly increased in the EST group compared to the No-EST group (31.3% vs. 14.5%, p = 0.03). The clinical and biochemical pregnancy rates were significantly increased in the EST group (37.3% vs. 15.9%, p = 0.01 and 43.3% vs. 23.2%, p = 0.01, respectively). Multivariate analysis revealed a significantly increased chance of live birth in women exposed to EST before IVF with an adjusted OR of 2.68 (95% confidence interval, CI: 1.13-6.36, p = 0.02). In the EST group, we reported one major complication Clavien and Dindo classification grade III, complication involving an ovarian abscess that required a laparoscopic drainage.ConclusionsEST is an interesting technique to improve IVF success rates in women with moderate-severe endometriosis. EST could be discussed before IVF in infertile women.

Objective To describe a minimally invasive 10-step technique of ethanol sclerotherapy for the treatment of an endometrioma. Design Step-by-step video demonstration of the technique. Setting University tertiary care hospital. Patient(s) Women with endometriomas defined as persistent endometriotic ovarian cysts between 25 and 100 mm of diameter, confirmed by magnetic resonance imaging. Intervention(s) Endometriomas occur in 17%–44% of patients with endometriosis, who generally complain about pelvic pain or infertility. This technique may be offered to patients with endometriomas to preserve fertility. The local institutional review board stated that approval was not required because the video describes a technique and not a clinical case. In our center, all severe endometriosis cases are discussed during a multidisciplinary endometriosis meeting. Main Outcome Measure(s) This video presents the procedure divided into the following 10 steps: planning of the surgery; materials; ultrasound examination; transvaginal puncture of the endometrioma; aspiration of the cyst; cytology of the cyst; flushing the cyst with saline solution; injection of 96% ethanol; 10 minutes’ exposure to ethanol; and aspiration of ethanol. Result(s) We presented 10 steps to make the procedure easier to adopt and to reduce the learning curve. This technique may be offered as an alternative to cystectomy. Conclusion(s) Ethanol sclerotherapy for endometriomas is a rapid outpatient procedure, requiring little equipment for a low cost.

Courtroom and political broadcasts are institutional contexts in which activities and interactions are restricted by particular constraints and are well-suited to investigation of the pragmatic functions of politicians’ question–answer exchanges. This research aimed to: (a) investigate possible differences between question and answer exchanges in TV interviews and courtroom examinations; (b) improve understanding of the pragmatic and functional aspects of question–answer relationships and how such relationships are affected by context. Nineteen courtroom examinations and 48 TV interviews involving the same 11 politicians (37 h 18 m) were coded by two independent observers; they coded a total of 2757 exchanges in terms of level of coercion and confusion in the questions, and equivocation in the answers. Analysis showed that there is a similar level of coercion in the two contexts, the rhythm of the questioning is faster in the courtroom, and there is more equivocation on TV. The relationship between question and answer varies between the contexts (moderation) but, as expected, we found many other direct and mediated relationships linking questions, answers and context. The results support the view that we need multiple pragmatic effects for understanding political questioning and equivocation.
