Abstract

We present measurements of X-ray Parametric Down Conversion at the Advanced Photon Source synchrotron facility. Using an incoming pump beam at 22 keV, we observe the simultaneous, elastic emission of down-converted photon pairs generated in a diamond crystal. The pairs are detected using high count rate silicon drift detectors with low noise. Production by down-conversion is confirmed by measuring time–energy correlations in the detector signal, where photon pairs within an energy window ranging from 10 to 12 keV are only observed at short time differences. By systematically varying the crystal misalignment and detector positions, we obtain results that are consistent with the constant total of the down-converted signal. Our maximum rate of observed pairs was 130/h, corresponding to a conversion efficiency for the down-conversion process of 5. 3 ± 0. 5 × 1 0 − 13 . • Pairs of X-rays are generated by Spontaneous Parametric Down Conversion. • Their relationship was confirmed with energy–time correlation measurements. • We infer a conversion efficiency of (5.3 ± 0.5) × 10−13, and suggest approaches to using more of the generated pairs. Abstract

To advance the development of laser proton accelerators for highly demanding applications like cancer treatment a stable source of energetic particles at high repetition rates is required. During our last experimental campaign at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf we therefore employed a pure condensed hydrogen jet as a renewable target for the 100TW Draco laser. Draco is a ultra-high power Ti:Sa laser system which delivers pulses of 30fs and 3J on target at 800nm with a repetition rate of 10Hz. A recollimating single plasma mirror results in an improved temporal contrast represented by an ASE level of 10-13. The expanding jet was monitored on-shot with a separate phase locked diode-pumped ps-laser at a wavelength of 515 nm. By that over-exposure of the CCD resulting from strong plasma self-emission which had been observed in earlier experiments to be at the harmonics of the pump laser, could be avoided. The probe beam was split in two parts oriented perpendicular and parallel with respect to the pump laser axis in order to precisely determine the jet position and its density profile.

Abstract

The complex physics of the interaction between short pulse high intensity lasers and solids is so far hardly accessible by experiments. As a result of missing experimental capabilities to probe the complex electron dynamics and competing instabilities, this impedes the development of compact laser-based next generation secondary radiation sources, e.g. for tumor therapy, laboratory-astrophysics, and fusion. At present, the fundamental plasma dynamics that occur at the nanometer and femtosecond scales during the laser-solid interaction can only be elucidated by simulations. Here we show experimentally that Small Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS) of femtosecond X-ray free-electron laser (XFEL) pulses facilitates new capabilities for direct in-situ characterization of intense short-pulse laser plasma interaction at solid density that allows simultaneous nanometer spatial and femtosecond temporal resolution, directly verifying numerical simulations of the electron density dynamics during the short pulse high intensity laser irradiation of a solid density target. For laser-driven grating targets, we measure the solid density plasma expansion and observe the generation of a transient grating structure in front of the pre-inscribed grating, due to plasma expansion, which is an hitherto unknown effect. We expect that our results will pave the way for novel time-resolved studies, guiding the development of future laser-driven particle and photon sources from solid targets.

Abstract

We report on a high repetition rate proton source produced by high-intensity laser irradiation of a continuously flowing, cryogenic hydrogen jet. The proton energy spectra are recorded at 1Hz for Draco laser powers of 6, 20, 40, and 100 TW. The source delivers ca. 10^13 protons/MeV/sr/min. We find that the average proton number over one minute, at energies sufficiently far from the cut-off energy, is robust to laser-target overlap and nearly constant. This work is therefore a first step towards pulsed laser-driven proton sources for time-resolved radiation damage studies and applications which require quasi-continuous doses at MeV energies.

Abstract

The effects of hydrocarbon dissociation and subsequent diamond precipitation on the internal structure and evolution of icy giant planets like Neptune and Uranus have been discussed for more than three decades. Inside these celestial bodies, gravity compresses mixtures of light elements to densities of several grams per cubic centimeter while the temperature reaches thousands of Kelvins resulting in thermal energies on the order of chemical bonding and above. Under these conditions, simple hydrocarbons like methane, which are highly abundant in the atmospheres of these planets, are believed to undergo structural transitions that release molecular hydrogen from deeper layers and may lead to compact stratified cores. Indeed, the isentropes of Uranus and Neptune intersect temperature-pressure conditions where first polymerization occurs, and then, in deeper layers, a phase separation into diamond and hydrogen may be possible. Here we show experimental evidence for this phase separation process obtained by in situ X-ray diffraction from polystyrene samples dynamically compressed to 150GPa and 5000 K, which resembles the environment ~10,000 km below the surfaces of Neptune and Uranus. Our findings demonstrate the necessity of high pressures for initiating carbon-hydrogen demixing and imply that diamond precipitation may require ~10x higher pressures than previously suggested by experiments investigating non-isolated hydrocarbons. Besides underlining the general importance of chemical processes inside giant planets, these results will inform evolutionary models of Uranus and Neptune, where carbon-hydrogen demixing can be a significant source for the convection necessary to explain their unusual magnetic fields. Additionally, our experiment demonstrates an alternative path for producing nanodiamonds for scientific and industrial applications that may be superior to current methods using oxygen-deficient explosives.

Abstract

We study the feasibility of using small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) as a new experimental diagnostic for intense laser-solid interactions. By using X-ray pulses from a hard X-ray free electron laser, we can simultaneously achieve nanometer and femtosecond resolution of laser-driven samples. This is an important new capability for the Helmholtz international beamline for extreme fields at the high energy density endstation currently built at the European X-ray free electron laser. We review the relevant SAXS theory and its application to transient processes in solid density plasmas and report on first experimental results that confirm the feasibility of the method. We present results of two test experiments where the first experiment employs ultra-short laser pulses for studying relativistic laser plasma interactions, and the second one focuses on shock compression studies with a nanosecond laser system.

Abstract

Absorption covers the physical processes which convert intense photon flux into energetic particles when a high-power laser illuminates optically-thick matter. It underpins important petawatt-scale applications today, e.g., medical-quality proton beam production. However, development of ultra-high-field applications has been hindered since no study so far has described absorption throughout the entire transition from the classical to the quantum electrodynamical (QED) regime of plasma physics. Here we present a model of absorption that holds over an unprecedented six orders-of-magnitude in optical intensity and lays the groundwork for QED applications of laser-driven particle beams. We demonstrate 58% efficient \gamma-ray production at $1.8\times 10^{25}~\mathrm{W~ cm^{-2}}$ and the creation of an anti-matter source achieving $4\times 10^{24}\ \mathrm{positrons}\ \mathrm{cm^{-3}}$, $10^{6}~\times$ denser than of any known photonic scheme. Abstract

We present the observation of a nonlocal heat wave by measuring spatially and temporally resolved electron temperature profiles in a laser produced nitrogen plasma. Absolutely calibrated measurements have been performed by Rayleigh scattering and by resolving the ion-acoustic wave spectra across the plasma volume with Thomson scattering. We find that the experimental electron temperature profiles disagree with flux-limited models, but are consistent with transport models that account for the nonlocal effects in heat conduction by fest electrons.

Short pulse (< 100 fs) tunable X-ray and VUV laser sources, based on the. free electron laser (FEL) concept, will be a watershed for high energy density research in several areas. These new 4(th) generation light sources will have extremely high fields and short wavelength (similar to 0.1 nm) with peak spectral brightness -photons/(s/mrad(2)/mm(2)/0.1% bandwidth- 10(10) greater than 3(rd) generation light sources. We briefly discuss several applications: the creation of warm dense matter (WDM), probing of near solid density plasmas, and laser-plasma spectroscopy of ions in plasmas. The study of dense plasmas has been severely hampered by the fact that laser-based probes that can directly access the matter in this regime have been unavailable and these new 4(th) generation sources will remove these restrictions. Finally, we present the plans for a user-oriented set of facilities that will incorporate high-energy, intense short-pulse, and x-ray lasers at the first x-ray FEL, the LCLS to be opened at SLAC in 2009.

Abstract

We describe experiments investigating the simultaneous backscattering from 351 nm (3w) and 527 nm (2w) interaction beams in a long scalelength laser-produced plasma for intensities I ≤ 1×1015 W/cm 2. Measurements show comparable scattering fractions for both color probe beams. Time resolved spectra of stimulated Raman and Brillouin scattering (SRS and SBS) indicate the detailed effects of laser intensity, smoothing and plasma parameters on the scattering amplitudes.

Abstract

Demanding applications like radiation therapy of cancer have pushed the development of laser plasma proton accelerators and defined levels of control and necessary proton beam stability in laser plasma experiments. The presentation will give an overview of the recent experiments for laser driven proton acceleration with high contrast at the high power laser Draco at HZDR, delivering pulses of 30fs and 5J. We present results of an experimental campaign employing a pure condensed hydrogen jet as a renewable target. The jet's nominal electron density is approximately 30 times the critical density and its diameter can be varied to be 2µm, 5µm or 10µm and thus allowing to study the regime of relativistic transparency. Different ion diagnostics reveal mono-species proton acceleration in the laser incidence plane around the wire-like target. Radiochromic film stacks in forward direction display signatures of filament-like structures, stemming from a Weibel-like instability generated at the rear side of the target in the underdense plasma region. A comparison of the data with results obtained using ultra-thin foils at high-contrast provided by a single plasma-mirror will be given. Additionally, the expanding jet could be monitored on-shot with a temporally synchronized probe beam perpendicular to the pump laser axis. Recorded probe images resemble those of z-pinch experiments with metal wires and indicate sausage-like instability along the jet axis.

Abstract

Applications of laser-accelerated protons demand a stable source of energetic particles at high repetition rates. We present the results of our experimental campaign in cooperation with MEC/SLAC at the 10Hz Ti:Sa laser Draco of Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR), employing a pure condensed hydrogen jet as a renewable target. Draco delivers pulses of 30fs and 5J at 800nm, focused to a 3µm spot by an F/2.5 off-axis parabolic mirror. The jet's nominal electron density is approximately 30 times the critical density and its thickness is 2µm, 5µm or 10µm, depending on the applied aperture on the source. Ion diagnostics reveal mono-species proton acceleration in a solid angle of at least +/-45 ° with respect to the incoming laser beam, with maximum energies of around 5 MeV. The expanding jet could be monitored on-shot with a temporally synchronized probe beam perpendicular to the pump laser axis. Recorded probe images resemble those of z-pinch experiments with metal wires and indicate an m=0 instability in the plasma.

Abstract

Calculating Debye-Scherrer diffraction patterns from polycrystalline materials under dynamic compression has been done in the Voigt (iso-strain) limit or in the Reuss (iso-stress) limit for small deviatoric stresses. These methods are appropriate for materials with low yield strength, where only small deviations from the hydrostat can be supported by the crystal structure or materials with low elastic anisotropy where the Voigt limit is valid. Here we present a method to calculate Debye-Scherrer diffraction patterns from polycrystalline samples under an arbitrary stress field. This method can calculate the strain tensor for each crystallite and can account for arbitrary sample texture and probe x-ray sources.
