Computer Science - Machine Learning - Abstract
We develop various AI models to predict hospitalization on a large (over 110$k$) cohort of COVID-19 positive-tested US patients, sourced from March 2020 to February 2021. Models range from Random Forest to Neural Network (NN) and Time Convolutional NN, where combination of the data modalities (tabular and time dependent) are performed at different stages (early vs. model fusion). Despite high data unbalance, the models reach average precision 0.96-0.98 (0.75-0.85), recall 0.96-0.98 (0.74-0.85), and $F_1$-score 0.97-0.98 (0.79-0.83) on the non-hospitalized (or hospitalized) class. Performances do not significantly drop even when selected lists of features are removed to study model adaptability to different scenarios. However, a systematic study of the SHAP feature importance values for the developed models in the different scenarios shows a large variability across models and use cases. This calls for even more complete studies on several explainability methods before their adoption in high-stakes scenarios., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, accepted to AMIA 2021

We report multi-epoch Very Long Baseline Interferometric (VLBI) observations of the compact radio lobe in the radio galaxy 3C84 (NGC1275) during 2016 - 2020. The image sequence of 3C84 reveals that the hotspot in the radio lobe showed the one-year long frustration in 2017 within a compact region of about 0.07 parsec, suggesting a strong collision between the jet and a compact dense cloud with the estimated average density about $(4\-- 6)\times 10^{5}~{\rm cm^{-3}}$. Although the hotspot and the radio lobe began to move south again after its breakout, the radio lobe showed a morphological transition from FR II- to FR I-class radio lobe and its radio flux became fainter. This is the first detection of the dynamical feedback from the cloud to the jet where the cloud located on the jet axis significantly interferes with the jet propagation and evolution at the central one-parsec region in active galactic nucleus., Comment: The Astrophysical Journal Letters, Volume 920, Issue 1, id.L24, 7 pp

Large-scale magnetogenesis is analyzed within the Palatini approach when the gravitational action is supplemented by a contribution that is nonlinear in the Einstein-Hilbert term. While the addition of the nonlinear terms does not affect the scalar modes of the geometry during the inflationary phase, the tensor-to-scalar ratio is nonetheless suppressed. In this context it is plausible to have a stiff phase following the standard inflationary stage provided the potential has a quintessential form. The large-scale magnetic fields can even be a fraction of the nG over typical length scales of the order of the Mpc prior to the gravitational collapse of the protogalaxy., Comment: 41 pages, 5 figures; corrected typos to match the version to be published in JCAP

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
We report on the JVLA observations of three high redshift Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN), having a black hole mass estimated to be among the largest known. Two of them, SDSS J0100+2802 and SDSS J0306+1853 at redshift 6.326 and 5.363 respectively, are radio-quiet AGN according to the classic definition, while the third (B2 1023+25 at z=5.284) is a powerful blazar. The JVLA data clearly show a radio structure in the first source, and a radio emission with a relatively steep radio spectrum in the second one, demonstrating the presence of a radio jet and a diffuse component. Therefore, being radio-quiet does not exclude the presence of a powerful relativistic jet with important consequences on the population studies and on the ratio between jetted and non-jetted AGN. We can estimate the viewing angle of these jets, and this allows us to find, albeit with some uncertainty, the density of black holes with a mass in excess of $10^{10}M_\odot$ at high redshifts. We found that their density in jetted AGN is very large in the redshift bin 5-6, comparable with the overall AGN population of the same optical luminosity. Jets might thus play a crucial role in the fast formation and evolution of the most massive black holes in the early Universe. They are more common than what expected from wide radio surveys with mJy flux sensitivity. Deeper JVLA or VLBI observations are key to discover a possible relativistic jet population hiding in plain sight at very high-redshift. The discovery of powerful relativistic jets associated with the most massive black holes in the early Universe re-opens the question: is the jet instrumental for a rapid growth of the black hole or instead is the black hole mass the main driver for the jet formation?, Comment: In press on A&A. 13 pages, 9 figures, 5 tables

Abstract Objective Ictal central apnea (ICA) is a frequent correlate of focal seizures, particularly in temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE), and regarded as a potential electroclinical biomarker of sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP). Aims of this study are to investigate morphometric changes of subcortical structures in ICA patients and to find neuroimaging biomarkers of ICA in patients with focal epilepsy. Methods We prospectively recruited focal epilepsy patients with recorded seizures during a video‐EEG long‐term monitoring with cardiorespiratory polygraphic recordings from April 2020 to September 2022. Participants were accordingly subdivided into two groups: patients with focal seizures with ICA (ICA) and without (noICA). A pool of 30 controls matched by age and sex was collected. All the participants underwent MRI scans with volumetric high‐resolution T1‐weighted images. Post‐processing analyses included a whole‐brain VBM analysis and segmentation algorithms performed with FreeSurfer. Results Forty‐six patients were recruited (aged 15–60 years): 16 ICA and 30 noICA. The whole‐brain VBM analysis showed an increased gray matter volume of the amygdala ipsilateral to the epileptogenic zone (EZ) in the ICA group compared to the noICA patients. Amygdala sub‐segmentation analysis revealed an increased volume of the whole amygdala, ipsilateral to the EZ compared to controls [F(1, 76) = 5.383, pFDR = 0.042] and to noICA patients ([F(1, 76) = 5.383, pFDR = 0.038], specifically of the basolateral complex (respectively F(1, 76) = 6.160, pFDR = 0.037; F(1, 76) = 5.121, pFDR = 0.034). Interpretation Our findings, while confirming the key role of the amygdala in participating in ictal respiratory modifications, suggest that structural modifications of the amygdala and its subnuclei may be valuable morphological biomarkers of ICA.

Abstract This paper presents a novel approach called Pharmacophore Activity Delta for extracting outstanding pharmacophores from a chemogenomic dataset, with a specific focus on a kinase target known as BCR-ABL. The method involves constructing a Hasse diagram, referred to as the pharmacophore network, by utilizing the subgraph partial order as an initial step, leading to the identification of pharmacophores for further evaluation. A pharmacophore is classified as a ‘Pharmacophore Activity Delta’ if its capability to effectively discriminate between active vs inactive molecules significantly deviates (by at least δ standard deviations) from the mean capability of its related pharmacophores. Among the 1479 molecules associated to BCR-ABL binding data, 130 Pharmacophore Activity Delta were identified. The pharmacophore network reveals distinct regions associated with active and inactive molecules. The study includes a discussion on representative key areas linked to different pharmacophores, emphasizing structure–activity relationships.

Introduction: If properly evaluated, chronic kidney disease can be found in up to 50% of patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc). The renal resistive index (RRI) is a marker of intrarenal vascular resistance and can predict SSc-associated vasculopathy. This study aimed to determine the impact of bosentan, a nonselective endothelin-1 receptor antagonist, on RRI and kidney function in SSc patients with recurrent digital ulcers. Methods: Twenty-one patients (age 57 ± 9 years, 19 females) were recruited in a 16-week prospective open-label uncontrolled study. Standardized procedures were used to measure general clinical and laboratory characteristics, systolic, diastolic, and mean arterial pressure (MAP), pulse pressure (PP), diastolic to systolic blood pressure (D/S) ratio, and urinary endothelin-1 levels. The Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI) equation was used to calculate kidney function as an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). RRI was measured by Doppler ultrasound as the average of three samplings of intrarenal blood flow in different kidney regions of both kidneys. Patients with secondary causes of kidney disease or kidney diseases associated with albuminuria were excluded. Results: Bosentan treatment for 16 weeks did not change RRI (0.731 ± 0.049–0.730 ± 0.054, p = 0.925), but increased urine endothelin-1 to creatinine ratio (0.27 ± 0.15–0.49 ± 0.57 pg/mg, p = 0.032) and reduced MAP (123 ± 10–101 ± 11 mm Hg, p < 0.001), PP (76 ± 11–68 ± 10 mm Hg, p = 0.003), D/S ratio (0.563 ± 0.044–0.538 ± 0.031, p = 0.006), and eGFR (92 ± 20–84 ± 24 mL/min/1.73 m2, p = 0.003). Discussion/Conclusion: In conclusion, in patients with SSc complicated by digital ulcers and normal to mildly diminished kidney function, bosentan had no effect on intrarenal hemodynamics, but reduced blood pressure levels and kidney function.

Despite the progress in automatic detection of radiologic findings from chest X-ray (CXR) images in recent years, a quantitative evaluation of the explainability of these models is hampered by the lack of locally labeled datasets for different findings. With the exception of a few expert-labeled small-scale datasets for specific findings, such as pneumonia and pneumothorax, most of the CXR deep learning models to date are trained on global "weak" labels extracted from text reports, or trained via a joint image and unstructured text learning strategy. Inspired by the Visual Genome effort in the computer vision community, we constructed the first Chest ImaGenome dataset with a scene graph data structure to describe $242,072$ images. Local annotations are automatically produced using a joint rule-based natural language processing (NLP) and atlas-based bounding box detection pipeline. Through a radiologist constructed CXR ontology, the annotations for each CXR are connected as an anatomy-centered scene graph, useful for image-level reasoning and multimodal fusion applications. Overall, we provide: i) $1,256$ combinations of relation annotations between $29$ CXR anatomical locations (objects with bounding box coordinates) and their attributes, structured as a scene graph per image, ii) over $670,000$ localized comparison relations (for improved, worsened, or no change) between the anatomical locations across sequential exams, as well as ii) a manually annotated gold standard scene graph dataset from $500$ unique patients., Comment: Dataset available on PhysioNet (https://doi.org/10.13026/wv01-y230)

Plasmonic nanocavities enable the confinement of molecules and electromagnetic fields within nano-metric volumes. As a consequence, the molecules experience a remarkably strong interaction with the electromagnetic field, to such an extent that the quantum states of the system become hybrids between light and matter: polaritons. Here we present a non-perturbative method to simulate the emerging properties of such polaritons: it combines a high-level quantum chemical description of the molecule with a quantized description of the localized surface plasmons in the nanocavity. We apply the method to molecules of realistic complexity in a typical plasmonic nanocavity, featuring also a subnanometric asperity (picocavity). Our results disclose the effects of the mutual polarization and correlation of plasmons and molecular excitations, disregarded so far. They also quantify to what extent the molecular charge density can be manipulated by nanocavities, and stand as benchmarks to guide the development of methods for molecular polaritonics., Comment: 13 Pages Main text, 4 Figures and 11 pages Supporting Information

Quantum Physics - Abstract
We examine the effect of the decoherence-induced reduction of correlation length on a one-dimensional scattering problem by solving numerically the evolution equation for the Wigner function with decoherence proposed in [L. Barletti, G. Frosali and E. Giovannini, Journal of Computational and Theoretical Transport 47, 209 (2018)]. The numerical solution is achieved by the Splitting-Scheme algorithm. Three cases are examined, corresponding to a reflection-dominated regime, a transmission-dominated regime and an intermediate one. The dynamic evolution of the Wigner function is followed until the separation process of the reflected and of the transmitted packets is complete and it is observed for three different values of the correlation length. The outcomes show a broadening and flattening of the Wigner function which becomes progressively more pronounced as the correlation length is decreased. This results in a reduced reflection at low energies and in a reduced transmission at high energies., Comment: 21 pages, 13 figures

It is shown that the slopes of the superhorizon hypermagnetic spectra produced by the variation of the gauge couplings are practically unaffected by the relative strength of the parity-breaking terms. A new method is proposed for the estimate of the gauge power spectra in the presence of pseudoscalar interactions during inflation. To corroborate the general results, various concrete examples are explicitly analyzed. Since the large-scale gauge spectra also determine the late-time magnetic fields it turns out that the pseudoscalar contributions have little impact on the magnetogenesis requirement. Conversely the parity-breaking terms crucially affect the gyrotropic spectra that may seed, in certain models, the baryon asymmetry of the Universe. In the most interesting regions of the parameter space the modes reentering prior to symmetry breaking lead to a sufficiently large baryon asymmetry while the magnetic power spectra associated with the modes reentering after symmetry breaking may even be of the order of a few hundredths of a nG over typical length scales comparable with the Mpc prior to the collapse of the protogalaxy. From the viewpoint of the effective field theory description of magnetogenesis scenarios these considerations hold generically for the whole class of inflationary models where the inflaton is not constrained by any underlying symmetry., Comment: 46 pages, 7 figures; to appear in Phys. Dynamic manipulation of magnetism in topological materials is demonstrated here via a Floquet engineering approach using circularly polarized light. Increasing the strength of the laser field, besides the expected topological phase transition, the magnetically doped topological insulator thin film also undergoes a magnetic phase transition from ferromagnetism to paramagnetism, whose critical behavior strongly depends on the quantum quenching. In sharp contrast to the equilibrium case, the non-equilibrium Curie temperatures vary for different time scale and experimental setup, not all relying on change of topology. Our discoveries deepen the understanding of the relationship between topology and magnetism in the non-equilibrium regime and extend optoelectronic device applications to topological materials., Comment: 4 figures

Computer Science - Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition - Abstract
Neural networks are prone to catastrophic forgetting when trained incrementally on different tasks. Popular incremental learning methods mitigate such forgetting by retaining a subset of previously seen samples and replaying them during the training on subsequent tasks. However, this is not always possible, e.g., due to data protection regulations. In such restricted scenarios, one can employ generative models to replay either artificial images or hidden features to a classifier. In this work, we propose Genifer (GENeratIve FEature-driven image Replay), where a generative model is trained to replay images that must induce the same hidden features as real samples when they are passed through the classifier. Our technique therefore incorporates the benefits of both image and feature replay, i.e.: (1) unlike conventional image replay, our generative model explicitly learns the distribution of features that are relevant for classification; (2) in contrast to feature replay, our entire classifier remains trainable; and (3) we can leverage image-space augmentations, which increase distillation performance while also mitigating overfitting during the training of the generative model. We show that Genifer substantially outperforms the previous state of the art for various settings on the CIFAR-100 and CUB-200 datasets., Comment: Revised method, evaluation, and discussion

Condensed Matter - Materials Science - Abstract
Recent experiments have demonstrated that light can induce a transition from the quantum paraelectric to the ferroelectric phase of SrTiO$_3$. Here, we investigate this terahertz field-induced ferroelectric phase transition by solving the time-dependent lattice Schr\"odinger equation based on first-principles calculations. We find that ferroelectricity originates from a light-induced mixing between ground and first excited lattice states in the quantum paraelectric phase. In agreement with the experimental findings, our study shows that the non-oscillatory second harmonic generation signal can be evidence of ferroelectricity in SrTiO$_3$. We reveal the microscopic details of this exotic phase transition and highlight that this phenomenon is a unique behavior of the quantum paraelectric phase., Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures

We report on the generation of bulk photocurrents in materials driven by non-resonant bi-chromatic fields that are circularly polarized and co-rotating. The nonlinear photocurrents have a fully controllable directionality and amplitude without requiring carrier-envelope-phase stabilization or few-cycle pulses, and are generated with photon energies much smaller than the band gap (reducing heating in the photo-conversion process). We demonstrate with ab-initio calculations that the photocurrent generation mechanism is universal and arises in gaped materials (Si, diamond, MgO, hBN), in semi-metals (graphene), and in two- and three-dimensional systems. Photocurrents are shown to rely on sub-laser-cycle asymmetries in the nonlinear response that build-up coherently from cycle-to-cycle as the conduction band is populated. Importantly, the photocurrents are always transverse to the major axis of the co-circular lasers regardless of the material's structure and orientation (analogously to a Hall current), which we find originates from a generalized time-reversal symmetry in the driven system. At high laser powers (~10^13 W/cm^2) this symmetry can be spontaneously broken by vast electronic excitations, which is accompanied by an onset of carrier-envelope-phase sensitivity and ultrafast many-body effects. Our results are directly applicable for efficient light-driven control of electronics, and for enhancing sub-band-gap bulk photovoltaic effects., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, supplementary information

The effective approach is applied to the analysis of inflationary magnetogenesis. Rather than assuming a particular underlying description, all the generally covariant terms potentially appearing with four space-time derivatives in the effective action have been included and weighted by inflaton-dependent couplings. The higher derivatives are suppressed by the negative powers of a typical mass scale whose specific values ultimately depend on the tensor to scalar ratio. During a quasi-de Sitter stage the corresponding corrections always lead to an asymmetry between the hypermagnetic and the hyperelectric susceptibilities. After presenting a general method for the estimate of the gauge power spectra, the obtained results are illustrated for generic models and also in the case of some non-generic scenarios where either the inflaton has some extra symmetry or the higher-order terms are potentially dominant., Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures

The production of the hypermagnetic gyrotropy is investigated under the assumption that the gauge coupling smoothly evolves during a quasi-de Sitter phase and then flattens out in the radiation epoch by always remaining perturbative. In the plane defined by the strength of the anomalous interactions and by the rate of evolution of the gauge coupling the actual weight of the pseudoscalar interactions turns out to be always rather modest if major deviations from the homogeneity are to be avoided during the inflationary phase. Even if the gauge power spectra are related by duality only in the absence of anomalous contributions, an approximate duality symmetry constrains the late-time form of the hypermagnetic power spectra. Since the hypermagnetic gyrotropy associated with the modes reentering prior to the phase transition must be released into fermions later on, the portions of the parameter space where the obtained baryon asymmetry is close to the observed value are the most relevant for the present ends. For the same range of parameters the magnetic power spectra associated with the modes reentering after symmetry breaking may even be of the order of a few hundredths of a nG over typical length scales comparable with the Mpc prior to the collapse of the protogalaxy., Comment: 40 pages, 8 figures

The fully atomistic modeling of real-size plasmonic nanostructures is computationally demanding, therefore most calculations are limited to small-to-medium sized systems. However, plasmonic properties strongly depend on the actual shape and size of the samples. In this paper we substantially extend the applicability of classical, fully atomistic approaches by exploiting state-of-the-art numerical iterative Krylov-based techniques. In particular, we focus on the recently developed $\omega$FQ model, when specified to carbon nanotubes, graphene-based nanostructures and metal nanoparticles. The performance of Generalized Minimal Residual (GMRES) and Quasi-Minimum Residual (QMR) algorithms is studied, with special emphasis on the dependence of the convergence rate on the dimension of the structures (up to 1 million atoms) and the physical parameters entering the definition of the atomistic approach., Comment: 15 pages, 15 figures

Floquet theory has spawned many exciting possibilities for electronic structure control with light with enormous potential for future applications. The experimental realization in solids, however, largely remains pending. In particular, the influence of scattering on the formation of Floquet-Bloch states remains poorly understood. Here we combine time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with time-dependent density functional theory and a two-level model with relaxation to investigate the survival of Floquet-Bloch states in the presence of scattering. We find that Floquet-Bloch states will be destroyed if scattering -- activated by electronic excitations -- prevents the Bloch electrons from following the driving field coherently. The two-level model also shows that Floquet-Bloch states reappear at high field intensities where energy exchange with the driving field dominates over energy dissipation to the bath. Our results clearly indicate the importance of long scattering times combined with strong driving fields for the successful realization of various Floquet phenomena., Comment: 27 pages, 5 figues

A phonoriton is an elementary excitation that is predicted to emerge from hybridization between exciton, phonon and photon. Besides the intriguing many-particle structure, phonoritons are of interest as they could serve as functional nodes in devices that utilize electronic, phononic and photonic elements for energy conversion and thermal transport applications. Although phonoritons are predicted to emerge in an excitonic medium under intense electromagnetic wave irradiation, the stringent condition for their existence has eluded direct observation in solids. In particular, on-resonance, intense pumping scheme has been proposed but excessive photoexcitation of carriers prevents optical detection. Here we theoretically predict the appearance of phonoritonic features in monolayer hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) embedded in an optical cavity. The coherent superposition nature of phonoriton states is evidenced by the hybridization of exciton-polariton branches with phonon replicas that is tunable by the cavity-matter coupling strength. This finding simultaneously provides an experimental pathway to observe the predicted phonoritons and opens a new avenue for tuning materials properties.

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is an autosomal dominant disorder resulting from mutations in the NF1 gene. Patients harboring these mutations are predisposed to a spectrum of peripheral nerve sheath tumors (PNSTs) originating from Schwann cells, of which malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs) are the deadliest, with limited treatment options. Therefore, an unmet need still exists for more effective therapies directed at these aggressive malignancies. Cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) is a reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS) generating ionized gas that has been proposed to be a potential therapeutic modality for cancer. In this study, we sought to determine the effects of CAP on NF1-associated PNSTs. Utilizing established mouse and human cell lines to interrogate the effects of CAP in both in vitro and in vivo settings, we found that NF1-associated PNSTs were highly sensitive to CAP exposure, resulting in cell death. To our knowledge, this is the first application of CAP to NF1-associated PNSTs and provides a unique opportunity to study the complex biology of NF1-associated tumors.

Purpose: The aim was to analyze the accuracy of digital models and 3D-printed casts from full-arch digital impressions using two intraoral scanners (iTeroTM and PrimescanTM). Materials and methods: A crossover reliability study was designed, scanning children and teenagers with iTeroTM and PrimescanTM. Accuracy was evaluated by measuring intercanine, intermolar, and ipsilateral canine–molar distances intraorally and comparing these measurements with those from plaster casts, digital models obtained with intraoral scanners, and 3D-printed casts. A paired comparison and a general linear model with a one-way repeated measures ANOVA procedure were carried out with a confidence level of 95% (p ≤ 0.05). Results: A total of 51 subjects were analyzed (mean age 12.35 ± 2.57). Statistical differences (p < 0.05) were found in the upper and lower arch regarding accuracy in comparison to intraoral measurements, except for the iTeroTM-printed cast and canine–molar upper right and intercanine lower distances (p > 0.05 for all comparisons). Regarding a comparison between reproduction methods, the plaster cast oversized the intercanine upper distance in comparison with both intraoral scanners’ digital models and the PrimescanTM-printed cast (p = 0.001), but there were no differences in the lower arch (p > 0.05 for all comparisons). Conclusion: Intraoral scanners reproduce tooth structures with similar accuracy to conventional methods.

We present a comprehensive computational study of UV/Vis absorption spectra of significant food colorants, specifically anthocyanins and curcumin tautomers, dissolved in polar protic solvents, namely water and ethanol. The absorption spectra are simulated using two fully polarizable quantum mechanical (QM)/molecular mechanics (MM) models based on the fluctuating charge (FQ) and fluctuating charge and dipoles (FQFμ) force fields. To accurately capture the dynamical aspects of the solvation phenomenon, atomistic approaches are combined with configurational sampling obtained through classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The calculated QM/FQ and QM/FQFμ spectra are then compared with experiments. Our findings demonstrate that a precise reproduction of the UV/Vis spectra of the studied pigments can be achieved by adequately accounting for configurational sampling, polarization effects, and hydrogen bonding interactions.

Currently, there are a few detailed guidelines on the overall management of children and adolescents with moderate-severe atopic dermatitis. AD is a complex disease presenting with different clinical phenotypes, which require an individualized and multidisciplinary approach. Therefore, appropriate interaction between primary care pediatricians, pediatric allergists, and pediatric dermatologists is crucial to finding the best management strategy. In this manuscript, members of the Italian Society of Pediatric Allergology and Immunology (SIAIP), the Italian Society of Pediatric Dermatology (SIDerP), and the Italian Society of Pediatrics (SIP) with expertise in the management of moderate-severe atopic dermatitis have reviewed the latest scientific evidence in the field. This narrative review aims to define a pathway to appropriately managing children and adolescents with moderate-severe atopic dermatitis.

ObjectivesThe mammalian tongue develops from the branchial arches (1-4) and comprises highly organized tissues compartmentalized by mesenchyme/connective tissue that is largely derived from neural crest (NC). This study aimed to understand the roles of tumour suppressor Neurofibromin 2 (Nf2) in NC-derived tongue mesenchyme in regulating Hippo signalling and cell proliferation for the proper development of tongue shape and size.Materials and methodsConditional knockout (cKO) of Nf2 in NC cell lineage was generated using Wnt1-Cre (Wnt1-Cre/Nf2cKO ). Nf2 expression, Hippo signalling activities, cell proliferation and tongue shape and size were thoroughly analysed in different tongue regions and tissue types of Wnt1-Cre/Nf2cKO and Cre- /Nf2fx/fx littermates at various stages (E10.5-E18.5).ResultsIn contrast to many other organs in which the Nf2/Hippo pathway activity restrains growth and cell proliferation and as a result, loss of Nf2 decreases Hippo pathway activity and promotes an enlarged organ development, here we report our observations of distinct, tongue region- and stage-specific alterations of Hippo signalling activity and cell proliferation in Nf2cKO in NC-derived tongue mesenchyme. Compared to Cre- /Nf2fx / fx littermates, Wnt1-Cre/Nf2cKO depicted a non-proportionally enlarged tongue (macroglossia) at E12.5-E13.5 and microglossia at later stages (E15.5-E18.5). Specifically, at E12.5 Nf2cKO mutants had a decreased level of Hippo signalling transcription factor Yes-associated protein (Yap), Yap target genes and cell proliferation anteriorly, while having an increased Yap, Yap target genes and cell proliferation posteriorly, which lead to a tip-pointed and posteriorly widened tongue. At E15.5, loss of Nf2 in the NC lineage resulted in distinct changes in cell proliferation in different regions, that is, high in epithelium and mesenchyme subjacent to the epithelium, and lower in deeper layers of the mesenchyme. At E18.5, cell proliferation was reduced throughout the Nf2cKO tongue.

Condensed Matter - Materials Science ,Physics - Computational Physics - Abstract
Optical cavities confine light on a small region in space which can result in a strong coupling of light with materials inside the cavity. This gives rise to new states where quantum fluctuations of light and matter can alter the properties of the material altogether. Here we demonstrate, based on first principles calculations, that such light-matter coupling induces a change of the collective phase from quantum paraelectric to ferroelectric in the SrTiO$_3$ groundstate, which has thus far only been achieved in out-of-equilibrium strongly excited conditions[1, 2]. This is a light-matter-hybrid groundstate which can only exist because of the coupling to the vacuum fluctuations of light, a "photo-groundstate". The phase transition is accompanied by changes in the crystal structure, showing that fundamental groundstate properties of materials can be controlled via strong light-matter coupling. Such a control of quantum states enables the tailoring of materials properties or even the design of novel materials purely by exposing them to confined light.

We report on crystal structure, magnetic and thermal physical properties of EuPd$_2$Sn$_4$ stannide. From the magnetic susceptibility measurements a divalent state of Eu rare earth element was determined together with an antiferromagnetic (AFM) order at 11 K. By applying magnetic field, the magnetic behavior variation reveals a complex magnetic structure. Above a critical field Bc a ferromagnetic (FM)-like character starts to prevail. AFM and FM regimes are separated by a metamagnetic region. Heat capacity measurements confirm this behavior.
