You, Gale, Boyd and Moodie attempted to carve out through your literary imagination socio-cultural and political avenues of ‘belonging.’ You attempted to remove the pernicious effects of colonization via writing anticolonial theatre of resistance, of refusal, and of anger, am I right? (Though, I believe right or wrong is not the case here).

Summary The political wave of actions occurring in several countries following the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police shows that times are changing dramatically in terms of how vast segments of our society perceive and respond to racism and social injustice against Black citizens. The campaign Black Lives Matter has gone mainstream and is no longer localized in the USA but has extended to several countries, inducing significant questioning of heroes, myths, and the way history and national identity have been built over decades. This movement has logically reached academia, as academic institutions reflect social structures and may reproduce and perpetuate social inequalities to different extents.

The death of George Floyd in May 2020 sparked an unprecedented global wave of protests that appeared to mark a turning point in the battle against racial injustice. But protests against racism are not new; each comes and soon passes into the archives of history, leaving few lasting changes in its wake. What was different about the death of Floyd was that the graphic manner of its unfolding was captured on film: the slow act of wilful suffocation (8 minutes and 46 seconds), and how the entire world was seemingly invited to witness the torment and the execution of this man, in broad daylight, even as he cried I can't breathe. However, this discussion attempts to move beyond that moment of death, the protests that followed and the distracting debate about statues and monuments to argue that the death of Floyd must be seen as the culmination of the process of systemic and structural racism. It aims to show how racism shifted from the black body as the visible and material target of racial oppression to air/breath, and how suffocation became the characteristic feature as well as the weapon of contemporary racial injustice.

This article focuses on my digital project, “The World War I Diary of Albert Huet.” First I provide an introduction about the project, including a short biography of Albert Huet, my great-grandfather, and explain how the project came to be, notably focusing on the help from the George A. Smathers Libraries digital services in digitizing the documents and making available online in UFDC. Then, I discuss what Albert’s diary can teach us about the French soldiers’ experience during WWI. Albert just like so many other men, grew up in the countryside, with a very limited education, and found himself at 18 on the battlefields with no training at all. This experience really had a profound negative impact on his life. Finally, I discuss the impact this digital project has had since it launched in 2016. In addition to being featured in classrooms assignments and on a major WWI research website, the project was used by Dr. Lynn Palermo from Susquehanna University who funded two undergraduate students to work on translating the diary. This example highlights how digital projects can be enriched by collaboration across institutions.

Emerging contaminants are a wide group of compounds that include several classes of organic substances. Personal care products, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, industrial additives, monomers and plasticizers are examples of compounds included in emerging contaminants. In this work, four chemicals representing four classes of organic contaminants were investigated: salicylic acid, representing drugs; bisphenol A, a monomer widely used in the production of polymeric products; methylparaben, used as a preservative in cosmetics; and irgarol, a biocide used in agriculture and antifouling paints. A previously validated method based on liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry was employed to determine the trace-levels of those compounds in ocean waters around King George Island, Antarctica. Salicylic acid and bisphenol A were found in many of the 20 samples investigated, which were collected on the northwest and southeast coasts of the island. Methylparaben and irgarol were found at low levels, each with only one occurrence. Although salicylic acid may originate in the biosynthesis of phenylalanine, the distribution and absence of this substance at some points suggest an anthropic origin. Bisphenol A was found in several sampling points, demonstrating contamination by plastics even though no correlation was found between these two compounds.

This article reassesses the electoral decline of British Liberalism in the 1920s, especially the catastrophic defeat of 1924. A leading explanation for this disaster is that the Liberals were ‘fighting to lose’ by leaving nearly 250 constituencies uncontested. David Lloyd George is widely seen as deliberately seeking to destroy his party by refusing to finance candidates through his infamous ‘fund’, so he could lead what remained after electoral evisceration. His actions are widely credited with stymieing prospects of a Liberal recovery in the next election, 1929, which confirmed the party's permanent replacement by Labour. Through a wide-ranging statistical reanalysis, supported by a study of grassroots constituency campaigns, this article argues that the lack of candidates was a negligible contributor either to Liberal annihilation in 1924, or to Liberal failure to recover in 1929. The sharply deteriorating health of the party was already felt keenly at the grassroots before, not after, the seemingly freak result of 1924 was known. We thus argue that, contrary to the judgement of historians and contemporaries, the 1924 result represented the truer reflection of the party's fundamental interwar strength, with 1923 the exception. The inaction of Lloyd George in 1924 thus can be interpreted as pragmatic rather than Machiavellian.

In animal ecology studies, it is a fundamental monitoring work to observe annual breeding cycle. In this study, we report the detailed observations on seven mother and pup pairs of Weddell seal (Leptonychotes weddellii) at Barton peninsula, King George Island, Antarctica. Two or three pairs had been observed along the coast on the fast ice in 2015, 2017, and 2018 and no breeding was recorded in 2016. Although it varied among individuals, pups were recorded to be born on 19−25 Sept., began swimming at day 18−19 after birth, and molted at day 21−25. Our observations may provide fundamental breeding information of Weddell seals in our study site and contribute to the future long-term monitoring research of seals.

The presidential campaign of 1992 is remembered for its focus on the US economy, as George Bush, Ross Perot, and Bill Clinton proposed solutions for the state of the nation’s finances. A key challenge for the Clinton campaign was to present their candidate as a viable commander-in-chief, with a viable foreign policy, without betraying the campaign’s focus on the domestic economy. A consideration of key speeches reveals the evolution of the candidate and his foreign policy, as the campaign served as a training ground for power. What emerges is Clinton’s adoption of foreign policy as a positive force in American domestic political life, in contrast to his many predecessors and successors, who regularly utilised foreign policy to assail foreign nations and entities. In doing so, parallels and contrasts with the Trump’s 2016 message emerge, enabling a greater appreciation of the use of campaign rhetoric in the development of US grand strategy.

The Carpentaria province (McArthur basin and Mount Isa inlier) in northern Australia is one of the most important districts for clastic-dominated (CD-type) massive sulfide deposits. The George Fisher Zn-Pb-Ag deposit, located in this province, is hosted by the carbonaceous Urquhart Shale Formation (ca. 1654 Ma) in a region that has an active history of metamorphism and tectonism. In this study, paragenetically constrained pyrite in samples from the George Fisher deposit and unmineralized Urquhart Shale have been analyzed in situ using secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) of sulfur isotopes (δ34S values). Samples were taken from four drill cores through the main orebodies at George Fisher and one drill core through correlative, unmineralized Urquhart Shale (Shovel Flats area). Five generations of pyrite were identified at George Fisher and record a protracted history of sulfate reduction under diagenetic and subsequent hydrothermal conditions: (1) fine-grained, subhedral-spheroidal pyrite (Py-0), (2) coarse-grained, anhedral pyrite (Py-1) associated with ore-stage 1 sphalerite and galena, (3) coarse-grained, euhedral pyrite (Py-2) associated with ore-stage 2 sphalerite, galena, and pyrrhotite, (4) massive subhedral to euhedral pyrite (Py-3) associated with ore-stage 3 chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, galena, and sphalerite, and (5) coarse-grained euhedral pyrite (Py-euh), which occurs only in unmineralized rocks. In the unmineralized Shovel Flats drill core, only Py-0 and Py-euh are present. Whereas pre-ore pyrite (Py-0) preserves negative δ34S values (–8.1 to 11.8‰), the ore-stage pyrites (Py-1, Py-2, and Py-3) have higher δ34S values (7.8–33.3, 1.9–12.7, and 23.4–28.2‰, respectively). The highest δ34S values (7.2–33.9‰) are preserved in Py-euh. In combination with petrographic observations, the δ34S values of pyrite provide evidence of three different processes responsible for the reduction of sulfate at George Fisher. Reduced sulfur in fine-grained pyrite (Py-0) formed via microbial sulfate reduction (MSR) under open-system conditions prior to the first generation of hydrothermal pyrite (Py-1) in ore-stage 1, which most likely formed via thermochemical sulfate reduction (TSR). During deformation, previously formed sulfide phases were then recycled and replaced during a second hydrothermal event (ore-stage 2), resulting in intermediate sulfur isotope values. Another syndeformational hydrothermal Cu event, involving a sulfate-bearing fluid, formed ore-stage 3 via TSR. This study demonstrates that the fine-grained pyrite formed pre-ore under conditions open to sulfate and outlines the role of multiple stages of sulfide formation in producing high-grade Zn-Pb-Ag orebodies in the Mount Isa inlier.

George Fox University is a small, private Quaker university in Newberg, Oregon, just southwest of Portland. In the fall of 2013, a transgender student, named only as Jaycen to protect his identity, was denied housing consistent with his gender identity as a man. Jaycen had requested to live on campus with a group of male friends and had obtained a male gender marker on his identification. George Fox University refused, in accordance with their policy on preventing unwed students of different genders from living together, and offered Jaycen a choice between a single apartment on campus and living off campus. In December 2019, Kathy Dorn Severini and George Severini, residents of Fair Haven, NJ, donated a collection of photographic images to Monmouth University, a private, comprehensive 4-year institution in West Long Branch, NJ, located about a mile from the Atlantic Ocean. With a 2019 enrollment of 6,167, the University offers undergraduate and graduate programs across all traditional disciplines, as well as a Doctorate in Nursing Practice and an Ed. D. program. Monmouth University is a Grammy Museum affiliate, offers a Peace Corps Prep program that is unique in New Jersey, and is the home to the Monmouth Polling Institute.

This publication completes the readers' acquaintance with letters written by the historian and professor of the St. Sergius Theological Institute in Paris A. V. Kartashev to his friend G. I. Novitsky, who lived in New York. The historian focused on preparing for the publication of his final works, “Essays on the History of the Russian Church” and “Ecumenical Councils”, which he wrote and dictated during the summer vacations. No less space in the letters was given by their author to traditional questions - about the financial condition of the institute and the peculiarities of training students in it, as well as about the relationship of its professors with the hierarchs of the West European Exarchate of Russian Parishes of the Patriarchate of Constantinople. The text of the letters is brought into line with modern spelling standards while preserving some features of the author’s spelling of individual words and punctuation. Comments include data on newly mentioned persons, and information on re-meeting ones can be found in previous journal publications for 2016-2019.

Objective: We reflect upon the processes of mental health administration in Australia with reference to George Orwell’s novel, 1984. Conclusions: Mental healthcare in Australia is distorted by politicisation, spin and a refusal to acknowledge the reality of the current situation. These challenges for mental healthcare demonstrate some similarities with the Ministries of Truth and Plenty, which conversely performed as their opposites in Orwell’s novel. Psychiatrists and their professional bodies should play a greater role in advocacy for clinician-led, evidence-based services in partnership with our communities.

In the past 25 years, education funding in Oklahoma has stagnated. In some schools, students learn about American politics from tattered textbooks in which George W. Bush is listed as the current president (Hendry and Pasquantonio 2018). Across the board, teachers are grossly underpaid, yet many are compelled to buy school supplies with their own funds (Felder 2018a). Moreover, in one out of five schools, students come to class only four days a week (Carlson 2018). After the state legislature failed to pass a funding package to sufficiently increase spending on schools and salaries in early 2018, teachers across Oklahoma walked out on their jobs to protest at the Capitol for nine days. In addition to sharing their grievances, the hundreds of protesting educators had something else in common: many were women.

BACKGROUND Oral malignancy is one of the commonest cancers in Asian countries. The incidence of oral cancer in India is 28 per one lakh population. The commonest site of oral cancer in India is buccal mucosa (>70%). Every year there is an incidence rate of 30 per one lakh worldwide and ten per one lakh in India. METHODS This is a hospital based, retrospective, cross sectional study, conducted in a tertiary care hospital attached to Andhra Medical College, Visakhapatnam, from May 2017 to September 2019 on 30 cases. RESULTS Buccal mucosa is the most common site of oral malignancies (53.34%). The peak age of incidence is 30 - 55 years in this study. Male to female ratio in this study group is 2.75:1. The habit of smoking and chewing tobacco is in about 70% cases, making it the most common addiction habit among the cases in this study, followed by pan masala, betel nut chewing, and alcohol. Low socioeconomic status is commonly associated with oral cancers. The majority of cases presented as ulceroproliferative lesions (80%) in this study. CONCLUSIONS Oral cancer is a national problem. Oral cancer remains a challenge as the majority of the patients reported in advanced stages. Micrographic excision and alternate forms of therapy such as cryo, electro, chemo, and photodynamic therapy for smaller lesions and wide excision along with advanced reconstructive procedures have made surgery the anchor in management. Radiotherapy is another important modality of treatment as its side effects reduced with the invention of radio sensitizers and radio protectors. Adjuvant-chemo, concomitant-chemo, and radiotherapy are useful in advanced disease. Immunological agents such as Gefitinib and Erlotinib are in use. Effective multi-modality management has come into use with surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy reducing the morbidity in oral cancers.
