Recollection is used to refer to the active process of setting up retrieval cues, evaluating the outcome, and systematically working toward a representation of a past experience that we find acceptable. In this study we report on three patients showing different patterns of confabulation affecting recollection and consciousness differentially. All patients confabulated in the episodic past domain. However, whereas in one patient confabulation affected only recollection of events concerning his personal past, present and future, in another patient confabulation also affected recollection of impersonal knowledge. The third patient showed an intermediate pattern of confabulation, which affected selectively the retrieval of past information, both personal and impersonal. We suggest that our results are in favor of a fractionation of processes involved in recollection underling different disorders of consciousness., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Inc. Faces are key social stimuli that convey a wealth of information essential for person perception and adaptive interpersonal behaviour. Studies in the domain of cognitive, affective, and social neuroscience have put in light that the processing of faces recruits specific visual regions and activates a distributed set of brain regions related to attentional, emotional, social, and memory processes associated with the perception of faces and the extraction of the numerous information attached to them. Studies using neuroimaging techniques such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) have allowed localizing these brain regions and characterizing their functional properties. Magnetoencephalography (MEG) and electroencephalography (EEG) techniques are complementary to fMRI in that they offer a unique insight into the temporal dynamics of mental processes. In this article, I review the contribution of neuroimaging techniques to the knowledge on face processing and person perception with the aim of putting in light the extended influence of experience-related factors, particularly in relation with emotions, on the face processing system. Although the face processing network has evolved under evolutionary selection pressure related to sociality-related needs and is therefore highly conserved throughout the human species, neuroimaging studies put in light both the extension and the flexibility of the brain network involved in face processing. MEG and EEG allow in particular to reveal that the human brain integrates emotion- and experience-related information from the earliest stage of face processing. Altogether, this emphasizes the diversity of social cognitive processes associated with face perception.

Gaze direction, a cue of both social and spatial attention, is known to modulate early neural responses to faces e.g. N170. However, findings in the literature have been inconsistent, likely reflecting differences in stimulus characteristics and task requirements. Here, we investigated the effect of task on neural responses to dynamic gaze changes: away and toward transitions (resulting or not in eye contact). Subjects performed, in random order, social (away/toward them) and non-social (left/right) judgment tasks on these stimuli. Overall, in the non-social task, results showed a larger N170 to gaze aversion than gaze motion toward the observer. In the social task, however, this difference was no longer present in the right hemisphere, likely reflecting an enhanced N170 to gaze motion toward the observer. Our behavioral and event-related potential data indicate that performing social judgments enhances saliency of gaze motion toward the observer, even those that did not result in gaze contact. These data and that of previous studies suggest two modes of processing visual information: a 'default mode' that may focus on spatial information; a 'socially aware mode' that might be activated when subjects are required to make social judgments. The amygdala is a key structure for monitoring the relevance of environmental stimuli. Yet, little is known about the dynamics of its response to primary social cues such as gaze and emotion. Here, we examined evoked amygdala responses to gaze and facial emotion changes in five epileptic patients with intracerebral electrodes. Patients first viewed a neutral face that would then convey social cues: it turned either happy or fearful with or without gaze aversion. This social cue was followed by a laterally presented target, the detection of which was faster if it appeared in a location congruent with the averted gaze direction. First, we observed pronounced evoked amygdala potentials to the initial neutral face. Second, analysis of the evoked responses to the cue showed an early effect of gaze starting at 123 ms in the right amygdala. Differential effects of fearful vs happy valence were individually present but more variable in time and therefore not observed at group-level. Our study is the first to demonstrate such an early effect of gaze in the amygdala, in line with its particular behavioral relevance in the spatial attention task., (© The Author (2015). The present study examined the influence of trait anxiety on the early stages of emotional face processing. In order to test if such early effect of anxiety could appear in response to positive as well as to negative stimuli, we recorded event-related potentials in response to both happy and fearful faces - contrasted with neutral faces - during a task where attention was explicitly directed to the emotion, in two groups differing by their anxiety level. We observed an amplification of the occipital P1 peak (90-120 ms) in response to happy compared to neutral faces in high trait anxious participants but not in the low trait anxious ones. Additionally, the N170 and EPN components were enhanced for the negative (fearful) faces, with no impact of trait anxiety. Recent electrophysiological studies have demonstrated modulations of the very first stages of visual processing (<100 ms) due to prior experience. This indicates an influence of a memory trace on the earliest stages of stimulus processing. Here we investigated if emotional audio-verbal information associated with faces on first encounter can affect the very early responses to those faces on subsequent exposure. We recorded magneto-encephalographic (MEG) responses to neutral faces that had been previously associated with positive (happy), negative (angry) or neutral auditory verbal emotional contexts. Our results revealed a very early (30-60 ms) difference in the brain responses to the neutral faces according to the type of previously associated emotional context, with a clear dissociation between the faces previously associated to positive vs. negative or neutral contexts. Source localization showed that two main regions were involved in this very early association effect: the bilateral ventral occipito-temporal regions and the right anterior medial temporal region. These results provide evidence that the memory trace of a face integrates positive emotional cues present in the context of prior encounter and that this emotional memory can influence the very first stages of face processing. Although the nature of the relationship between attention and awareness is actively debated, the possibility that different forms of attention might interact differently with awareness has never been directly tested. We examine here whether voluntary and involuntary spatial attentions, two forms of attention that were distinguished by manipulating the predictability of central arrow cues, interact in the same way with visual awareness. Conscious perception was enhanced by both voluntary and involuntary attentions, and to a similar extent, suggesting volition may not be an essential feature for awareness. However, the influence of attention was dependent on the awareness of the target stimulus: Voluntary attention shortened reaction times and improved discrimination accuracy of cued relative to uncued stimuli, but only when the stimuli were consciously perceived. Involuntary attention shortened reaction times for cued relative to uncued target stimuli, but only when the stimuli were not consciously perceived. Our results imply that the nature of the relationship between attention and awareness is not a simple one but depends on the type of attention involved. More specifically, our results suggest that the aware or unaware status of the stimulus could determine whether attentional facilitation is driven by voluntary or involuntary mechanisms, a proposal that goes in the opposite direction of the classical view that attention controls awareness. Because voluntary attentional benefits were observed in aware trials but involuntary attentional benefits were observed in unaware trials only, our results also argue against the idea that attentional effects on conscious and unconscious processing are fundamentally of the same nature., (Copyright © 2011 Elsevier Ltd. Inferring someone's personality from his or her photograph is a pervasive and automatic behavior that takes place even if no reliable information about one's character can be derived solely from facial features. This illustrates nicely the idea that perception is not a passive process, but rather an active combination of current sensory inputs with endogenous knowledge derived from prior experience. To understand how and when neural responses to faces can be modulated by prior experience, we recorded magneto-encephalographic (MEG) responses to new faces, before and after subjects were exposed for a short period of 15-20 min to an experimentally induced association between a facial feature (inter-eye distance) and a response (personality judgment). In spite of the absence of any observable response bias following such a short reinforcement phase, our experimental manipulation influenced neural responses to faces as early as 60-85 ms. Source localization of magneto-encephalographic signals, confirmed by intracranial recordings, suggests that prior experience modulates early neural processing along two initially independent neural routes, one initiated in an anterior system that includes the orbitofrontal cortex and the temporal poles, and the second one involving face-sensitive regions in the ventral visual pathway. The two routes are both active as early as 60 ms but engage in reciprocal interactions only later, between 135 and 160 ms. These experimental findings support recent models assuming the existence of a fast anterior pathway activated in parallel with the ventral visual system which would link prior experience with current sensory inputs., (Copyright © 2010 Elsevier Inc. The lateral organization of a prototypical G protein-coupled receptor, the neurokinin-1 receptor (NK1R), was investigated in living cells by fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) microscopy, taking advantage of the recently developed acyl carrier protein (ACP) labeling technique. The NK1R was expressed as fusion protein with ACP to which small fluorophores were then covalently bound. Our approach allowed the recording of FRET images of receptors on living cells with unprecedented high signal-to-noise ratios and a subsequent unequivocal quantification of the FRET data owing to (i) the free choice of optimal fluorophores, (ii) the labeling of NK1Rs exclusively on the cell surface, and (iii) the precise control of the donor-acceptor molar ratio. Our single-cell FRET measurements exclude the presence of constitutive or ligand-induced homodimers or oligomers of NK1Rs. The strong dependence of FRET on the receptor concentration further reveals that NK1Rs tend to concentrate in microdomains, which are found to constitute approximately 1% of the cell membrane and to be sensitive to cholesterol depletion.
