227. Carbonaceous Nanowire Supports for Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cells

Abstract

Carbohydrate-dye combinations were used to form ionically-linked soft templates for the formation of polypyrrole nanowire networks. High yields of nanostructured products were obtained using small amounts of low-cost carbohydrate and dye template materials, the majority of which remained encapsulated within the nanowires. Varying the concentration and the two-part ratio of the templates influenced the length and diameter of the nanofiber segments within the nanowire network. Pyrolysis of the nanowires yielded carbonaceous fibers containing nitrogen heteroatoms, as well as convoluted graphitic domains, well suited for supporting Pt nanoparticles. The resulting high density of nucleation sites enabled the formation of well dispersed, smaller Pt particles compared to commercial catalysts, despite significantly higher support surface loadings.

241. Measurement of H2S Crossover Rates in Polymer Fuel Cell Membranes Using an Ion-Probe Technique.

Abstract

A sulfide antioxidant buffer solution was used to trap and concentrate trace quantities of H2S that permeated through 50 cm2 samples of fuel cell Nafion 117, 212, and 112 membranes using a H2S partial pressure difference up to 1000 ppm at room temperature. Experiments were conducted between 24 and 48 h to achieve sulfide ion concentrations high enough to be determined accurately by subsequent titration with Pb(NO3)2. In contrast to previous work, a special H2S mixing system was employed to achieve reproducible delivery of H2S concentrations throughout each experiment. The calculated rates of H2S crossover, normalized for membrane area, thickness, and differential PH2S varied from as low as 7.58 X 10-10 to 4.65 X 109 g/s atm cm depending on the type of Nafion sample and humidity conditions. Even low levels of humidification of the membrane and gases (saturated at 25°C) increased the crossover rate of H2S in the Nafion materials. H2S permeation through the electrolyte membrane negatively impacts the oxygen reduction rate occurring on the cathode and possibly causes an irreversible decrease in the overall fuel cell performance. Abstract

More clinicians are using mindfulness-based therapeutic strategies; however, Evangelical Christian clients sometimes worry about the Buddhist origins of these treatments. Christian accommodative mindfulness (CAM) attempts to address these concerns with culturally sensitive adaptations to mindfulness methods. We present a definition of CAM and propose some worldview adjustments to typical mindfulness constructs when working with these clients. The empirical research on Christian-derived meditation strategies and Christian-adapted mindfulness strategies will then be reviewed. We introduce a four-session group CAM protocol currently being researched that focuses on scripture meditation, breath meditation, body awareness, and loving-kindness meditation. 246. Theophostic Ministry: Preliminary Practitioner Survey.

Abstract

This exploratory survey investigated Theophostic Ministry, a recently developed inner healing prayer technique that has simultaneously garnered much anecdotal support and criticism. Specifically, the survey sought to assess who is using Theophostic Ministry, what disorders are being treated, and regular practitioners’ perceptions of this technique’s efficacy. The survey was administered during an advanced training seminar given by Ed Smith, the technique’s developer. Of the 148 participants 74% completed the survey (Respondent N = 111). Survey results suggested a wide variety of people are using Theophostic Ministry - from pastors to lay counselors to psychologists. Overall, the respondents believe this technique is very effective and have used the prayer ministry in treating a wide variety of disorders including some quite complex. 249. (Invited) Proton Transport in Inorganic Phosphates

Abstract

The proton conduction mechanism of well-characterized SnP2O7 and Sn1-xInxP2O7 materials was investigated using AC impedance spectroscopy and inelastic neutron scattering. Samples with minimal amounts of excess phosphate do not possess appreciable conductivity at room temperature. Indium doping appears to increase the high temperature proton conductivity of the materials. Inelastic neutron scattering data indicates that no appreciable changes in proton concentration occur between hydrated and dehydrated samples of SnP2O7 while changes in proton vibrational mode amplitudes occur with indium doping, or upon hydration, of samples that contain excess phosphate.

250. Cerium Migration through Hydrogen Fuel Cells during Accelerated Stress Testing

Abstract

Component durability of polymer-electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cells can be improved by adding cerium cations, which serve to scavenge harmful free radicals and selectively decompose hydrogen peroxide, which are formed during the oxidation reduction reaction (ORR). We have investigated the change in distribution of cerium cations in a hydrogen fuel cell as a function of operating time, considering both cerium containing membranes (commercial XL by DuPont) as well as fuel cells with CeO2 in the cathode catalyst layer. Our results show cerium cations are very mobile in Nafion, and migrate into both the anode and cathode catalyst layers.
