This work describes the preparation and characterization of biomimetic chitosan/multiwall carbon nanotubes/nano-hydroxyapatite (CTS/MWCNT/nHAp) scaffolds and their viability for bone tissue engineering applications. The cryogenic process ice segregation-induced self-assembly (ISISA) was used to fabricate 3D biomimetic CTS scaffolds. Proper combination of cryogenics, freeze-drying, nature and molecular ratio of solutes give rise to 3D porous interconnected scaffolds with clusters of nHAp distributed along the scaffold surface. The effect of doping in CNT (e.g. with oxygen and nitrogen atoms) on cell viability was tested. Under the same processing conditions, pore size was in the range of 20-150 μm and irrespective on the type of CNT. Studies on cell viability with scaffolds were carried out using human cells from periosteum biopsy. Prior to cell seeding, the immunophenotype of mesenchymal periosteum or periosteum-derived stem cells (MSCs-PCs) was characterized by flow cytometric analysis using fluorescence-activated and characteristic cell surface markers for MSCs-PCs. The characterized MSCs-PCs maintained their periosteal potential in cell cultures until the 2nd passage from primary cell culture. Thus, the biomimetic CTS/MWCNT/nHAp scaffolds demonstrated good biocompatibility and cell viability in all cases such that it can be considered as promising biomaterials for bone tissue engineering. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This work reports the synthesis of a monomer 2-((2-(3-(prop-1-en-2-yl)phenyl)propan-2-yl)carbamoyl)oxy)ethyl methacrylate (MVTPM) and the evaluation of its performance as an additive in the formulation of Bis-GMA/TEGDMA based composite resins. Experimental composite resins formulated with the MVTPM monomer were compared with a control reference. Double bond conversion, polymerization kinetics, shrinkage and associated stress, sorption, and aqueous solubility, cell viability, as well as mechanical properties were evaluated according to international measurements standards. The experimental composite resins show comparable mechanical properties with the control reference and improvements in other properties, such as better hydrolytic and hygroscopic behavior and lower shrinkage stress, are reported. Improving trees location under LiDAR-derived digital canopy height models (DCMs) is of great interest as discrepancies between both dataset influence the accuracy of the estimations of forest attributes. A method is proposed for the co-registration of LiDAR-derived DCMs with local field positional measurements under a dense tree canopy. This approach consists of two main stages: (1) the assessment of the match between the LiDAR-derived digital terrain model and topographic surveying measurements when shifting the coordinates around a measured position; and (2) a comparison between the field height of selected trees and the LiDAR-derived DCM. Satisfactory results were obtained from geo-referencing field data and LiDAR models for characterizing the forest structure in heterogeneous Pinus sylvestris stands. Closure error of topographic surveying was 17.7 cm, and GPS accuracy to 95 % probability was below 10 cm, thus considerably lower than the resolution of the LiDAR models (1 m-pixel). The best co-location for field trees and LiDAR models provided a coefficient of determination of 0.56 between field-measured tree heights and LiDAR-derived DCM values. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context: Forest structure characterisation approaches using LiDAR data and object-based image analysis remain scarce to forestry agencies as these automated procedures usually require the use of expensive software and highly skilled analysts. The integration of forest expert opinion into semi-automated approaches would simplify the access of forest managers to new technologies and would allow the incorporation of personal experience and the introduction of specific forest management criteria. Aim: The aim of this study is to explore new alternatives to a previously published automated approach based on LiDAR data and object-based image analysis. Methods: We compare four approaches, ranging from null to high incorporation of expert opinion and from fully automated to fully manual. These four approaches consist of three stages: (1) forest stand identification from LiDAR models, (2) forest stand classification into forest structure classes (manual and based on cluster analysis), and (3) validation. Results: Quantitative attributes for validation (i.e. hypsographs and percentiles) provided slightly lower degree of separability for forest structure classes, in the mixed procedures with increasing incorporation of expert opinion than for the fully automated approach. Conclusions: The new mixed approaches proposed are comparable to the automated procedures for the characterisation of forest structure in heterogeneous pine forest stands. They also offer additional advantages: (1) they make it possible to give a specific management focus and (2) they provide accessibility by the forest managers to the source of LiDAR information. Truffles are abundant in some regions of China. Nevertheless, it was not until the 1980s that Tuber species were discovered by Chinese mycologists. In recent years, international truffle markets have shown an increasing interest in the import of Chinese Tuber. These truffles serve as a complement to European truffles due to their lower prices and their greater availability in a deficit market. However, Chinese truffles have been the subject of fraudulent commercial practices, and these could have a negative effect on truffle culture. These concerns have been behind numerous recent studies designed to obtain detailed information about Chinese Tuber species. Unfortunately, many of these studies are not published in English, and are dispersed throughout the specific local or national bibliography and proceedings of specialized truffle conferences. In view of the need to expand current knowledge of Chinese Tuber species, we present a comprehensive summary of the taxonomy, ecology, mycorrhizae, genetics, biochemistry, and cultivation of Chinese Tuber species. In the jaragua-bahoruco-enriquillo biosphere reserve, located on the southern border between the Dominican Republic and Haiti, there are depressed rural areas with soils with high content in Cadmium and other heavy metals which originate naturally in the geological substrate. Data from 80 soils and an inventory of 76 plantations (coffee and kidney bean were used) to design a GIS (geographic information systems) tool which integrated statistical multivariate methods, soil parameters including heavy metal content into models of land planning, agricultural development, forests and protection of the health of the area’s inhabitants and the natural environment. This GIS tool is based on raster models of an open source, which use combination and reclassification operations based on the maps, geostatistical methods (Kriging), statistical analyses external to the GIS, and cartography of limiting and excluding particular factors for crops (including heavy metal soil content). The GIS tool developed discriminates extreme situations in sustainable agroforestry planning in contaminated rural areas of the Caribbean, Central America and other tropical regions. Mitochondria are important organelles that act as a primary site to produce reactive oxygen species (ROS). Additionally, mitochondria play a pivotal role in the regulation of Ca2+ signaling, fatty acid oxidation, and ketone synthesis. Dysfunction of these signaling molecules leads to the development of pulmonary hypertension (PH), atherosclerosis, and other vascular diseases. Features of PH include vasoconstriction and pulmonary artery (PA) remodeling, which can result from abnormal proliferation, apoptosis, and migration of PA smooth muscle cells (PASMCs). These responses are mediated by increased Rieske iron–sulfur protein (RISP)-dependent mitochondrial ROS production and increased mitochondrial Ca2+ levels. Mitochondrial ROS and Ca2+ can both synergistically activate nuclear factor κB (NF-κB) to trigger inflammatory responses leading to PH, right ventricular failure, and death. Evidence suggests that increased mitochondrial ROS and Ca2+ signaling leads to abnormal synthesis of ketones, which play a critical role in the development of PH. In this review, we discuss some of the recent findings on the important interactive role and molecular mechanisms of mitochondrial ROS and Ca2+ in the development and progression of PH. We also address the contributions of NF-κB-dependent inflammatory responses and ketone-mediated oxidative stress due to abnormal regulation of mitochondrial ROS and Ca2+ signaling in PH. Abstract  Chinese truffles serve as a good complement to the market for Tuber melanosporum (Périgord black truffle). However, Chinese truffles could be introduced accidentally or fraudulently into the plantations of Mediterranean truffles, and they could have a negative effect on truffle production and natural ecosystems. The study of Tuber species from China which are commercialized in Europe began 14 years ago. Tuber pseudoexcavatum was proposed as a new species, and this has been validated by some authors based on molecular and phylogenetic studies. We synthesize their ectomycorrhizae using samples from the type collection, and we compare T. pseudoexcavatum and Tuber indicum ectomycorrhizae. The ectomycorrhizae of these species have a morphology which is related to the ectomycorrhizae of T. melanosporum. We provide useful information for the rapid screening of the above-mentioned Chinese truffles ectomycorrhizae, for the quality control of commercial plants mycorrhized with Tuber. Moreover, we analyze the soil tolerance and the host plant affinity of T. pseudoexcavatum and T. indicum, in order to assess the capacity of both Chinese truffles to penetrate T. melanosporum plantations and habitats. The Périgord black truffle (Tuber melanosporum Vittad.) can mycorrhize with rockroses (Cistus L.) in Mediterranean forests. These shrubs may be of interest for truffle cultivation as they produce early carpophores, collaborate in tree mycorrhization and in the survival of Tuber melanosporum mycelium. However, there are very few quantitative studies on truffle production associated with Cistus. For this reason, we have carried out a study on the natural production of Tuber melanosporum associated with Cistus laurifolius L. in central Spain. An Anova test confirmed the existence of significant differences in carpophore production in four habitats, with and without the presence of C. laurifolius. Twenty-one burns associated with C. laurifolius showed less significant production than the rest. We also confirmed that in 122 burns, Tuber melanosporum was always unequivocally associated with the root base of Quercus L. or Corylus L. trees. Similarly, five truffle-collectors confirmed that they had never found a single burn with carpophore production associated exclusively with rockroses. It has also been statistically verified that many Cistus die in Tuber melanosporum burns, whereas in old burns with minimum carpophore production, a new colonization of young Cistus has been observed. This study also confirms that C. laurifolius mycorrhizes easily with Tuber melanosporum. We propose that Cistus laurifolius may act as transmitters of Tuber melanosporum, although they do not induce fruiting. Consequently, the commercial cultivation of Cistus laurifolius mycorrhized with Tuber melanosporum for production is not recommended in truffle culture. Abstract: Forest management planning usually takes place at the stand, enterprise or regional level. To maintain and conserve forest ecological processes, management operations should be transformed to an individual tree scale. This paper describes a method for supporting decision making at the level of individual trees following an approach based on close-to-nature forestry. An iterated conditional mode algorithm, as a relaxation of simulated annealing optimisation, was used to find an optimal solution. Using the principles of close-to-nature silviculture, a value function assigns management actions at the tree level. The reference conditions for optimisation are the decision-maker''s preferences. The method was applied to an uneven-aged stand of Pinus sylvestris in the Guadarrama Mountains of Madrid (Spain) to find an optimal combination of individual trees to be harvested. An energy function is used to find an economic maximum for the remaining trees in the stand, in terms of the amount of low and high-quality timber to be harvested using the constraints: forest cover, biodiversity and regeneration. The optimal solution achieved an increased value for the stand of €321.32/ha (€96,396 for the 300ha forest), while the residual diameter distribution favoured ecosystem services and regeneration. Even though this type of model is adaptable to a variety of decision-maker preferences and optimisation constraints, its data requirements limit application to small, intensively managed properties. Transient receptor potential (TRP) ion channels play critical roles in physiological and pathological conditions. Increasing evidence has unveiled the contribution of TRP vanilloid (TRPV) family in the development of asthma. The TRPV family is a group (TRPV1-TRPV6) of polymodal channels capable of sensing thermal, acidic, mechanical stress, and osmotic stimuli. TRPVs can be activated by endogenous ligands including, arachidonic acid derivatives or endocannabinoids. While TRPV1-TRPV4 are non-selective cation channels showing a predominance for Ca2+ over Na + influx, TRPV5 and TRPV6 are only Ca2+ permeable selective channels. Asthma is a chronic inflammatory bronchopulmonary disorder involving airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR) and airway remodeling. Patients suffering from allergic asthma display an inflammatory pattern driven by cytokines produced in type-2 helper T cells (Th2) and type 2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2s). Ion channels are essential regulators in airway smooth muscle (ASM) and immune cells physiology. In this review, we summarize the contribution of TRPV1, TRPV2, and TRPV4 to the pathogenesis of asthma. TRPV1 is associated with hypersensitivity to environmental pollutants and chronic cough, inflammation, AHR, and remodeling. TRPV2 is increased in peripheral lymphocytes of asthmatic patients. TRPV4 contributes to ASM cells proliferation, and its blockade leads to a reduced eosinophilia, neutrophilia, as well as an abolished AHR. In conclusion, TRPV2 may represent a novel biomarker for asthma in children; meanwhile, TRPV1 and TRPV4 seem to be essential contributors to the development and exacerbations of asthma. Natura 2000 network is becoming increasingly important for ecosystem services but not all human activities are limited as long as they ensure protection of conservation values. Private owned areas should harmonize biodiversity conservation and other compatible land uses with human activities sustainability. The purpose of this study is to present a methodology for the assessment of urban use capacity considering restrictions presented in a Natura 2000 site in Central Spain (Madrid). This assessment takes the advantages of high-resolution images and point clouds LiDAR data using Object Based Images Analysis (OBIA). Considering different ranges of (i) tree height, (ii) slopes and (iii) the existing protected habitats, six scenarios of Urban use capacity were obtained. A canopy height vegetation was derived, and the maximum height was assigned to each delineated crown polygon tree. The implementation of this methodology proposes the largest potential urban area (Scenario 6) but priority habitats and habitats of Community interest were entirely removed from it. Finally, plots (1000 m 2) with greater or lesser capacity of vegetation coverage change were located. A total of 145 plots (6% of the whole property) with urban use low capacity were located. Starch is a biopolymer with enormous potential for generating new biodegradable packages due to its easy availability and low cost. However, due to its weak functional properties, limitation of its interaction with some hydroxyl groups and evaluation of blends with other polymers are necessary in order to improve its performance. Glycerol-plasticized acetylated corn starch films were developed using the casting method, and the impact of incorporating chitosan (TPS:CH) in various proportions (75:25, 50:50, and 25:75 v/v) was studied in the present research. The effect of chitosan ratios on the physical, mechanical, water-vapor barrier, and thermal properties of the film was studied. Chitosan-protonated amino groups promoted the formation of intermolecular bonds, improving tensile strength, thermal stability, hydrophobicity, water adsorption capacity, and the gas barrier of starch films. The results show that the film composed of TPS25-CH75 proved to be the best barrier to water vapor; thus, these composite films are excellent choices for developing biodegradable packaging for the food industry. Theophylline is a drug commonly used to treat asthma due to its anti-inflammatory and bronchodilatory properties. Testosterone (TES) has been suggested to reduce the severity of asthma symptoms. This condition affects boys more than girls in childhood, and this ratio reverses at puberty. We reported that guinea pig tracheal tissue chronic exposure to TES increases the expression of β2-adrenoreceptors and enhances salbutamol-induced K+ currents (IK+). Herein, we investigated whether the upregulation of K+ channels can enhance the relaxation response to methylxanthines, including theophylline. Chronic incubation of guinea pig tracheas with TES (40 nM, 48 h) enhanced the relaxation induced by caffeine, isobutylmethylxanthine, and theophylline, an effect that was abolished by tetraethylammonium. In tracheal myocytes, chronic incubation with TES increased theophylline-induced IK+; flutamide reversed this effect. The increase in IK+ was blocked by 4-aminopyridine by ~82%, whereas iberiotoxin reduced IK+ by ~17%. Immunofluorescence studies showed that chronic TES exposure increased the expression of KV1.2 and KV1.5 in airway smooth muscle (ASM). In conclusion, chronic exposure to TES in guinea pig ASM promotes upregulation of KV1.2 and KV1.5 and enhances theophylline relaxation response. • 11 single-use plastics (SUP) plates and cups were evaluated under composting. • The percentage of disintegration of SUP varies depending on the base polymer. • FT-IR analysis identifies PP and PE in two marketed natural fiber-based SUP. • Heavy metals were detected from plastic disintegration: Zn, Cu, Ni, Cr, Pb, As and Cu. • EPS SUP reduced barley growth and correlates with Zn in compost. Many single–use plastic (SUP) options made of synthetic polymers, bio-based materials, and blends of both are available in the market and used in large quantities. The disintegration of eleven commercial SUP, marketed in Mexico as cups and plates, was investigated in an aerobic home compost environment at a laboratory scale over 180 days. An evaluation of chemical changes, surface morphology, and thermal and mechanical properties was conducted to ascertain the original composition of SUP and the progression of disintegration in samples that are challenging to clean from soil contamination. Furthermore, the impact of residual compost on barley (Hordeum vulgare) plant growth and its correlation with the leaching of heavy metals were explored. The bio-based SUP, but not those made of expanded polystyrene foam, showed a correlation between the disintegration degree (measured by weight loss into particles <2 mm) and a decrease in functional groups (observed by FT-IR), mechanical-thermal stability loss, and surface wear over disintegration time. For instance, the highest disintegration at 180 days was approximately 70 % for wheat bran and palm leaf plates, followed by wheat plates and cellulose-PLA cups (60 %). In addition to the components listed by the manufacturers, the FT-IR and DSC analysis revealed the presence of polyethylene and polypropylene in cellulose cups and sugarcane plates. These components, impede disintegration but contribute to preserving thermal resistance and hydrophobicity during utilization. Compost derived from expanded polystyrene foam SUP, with 90 days of disintegration, was rich in zinc and chromium and significantly decrease in the root length of the barley plant compared to the control. We present a new method for the classification of beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) forest plots based on discriminant and frequency analysis. This method can be used as a tool to allow experts to stratify beech forests in a simple and precise way. The method is based on discriminant analysis with cross-validation of 13 variables measured in 142 plots from the 2005 Second National Forest Inventory and 63 plots from an inventory installed in specific locations together with a frequency analysis of the qualifying variables. In the first stage, the method uses the results of a frequency analysis fitted with an iterative discriminant analysis that allows improving the subsequent classifications taking into account the results of the analysis and the correctly- and wrong-classified plots. This method is applied to beech forest in Burgos (Spain) where six structural groups were described. The discriminant functions show that forest structure depends basically on diameter distribution and almost 94% of the plots are correctly classified using this methodology. The high level of correctly assigned plots indicates an accurate classification of structure that can be used to stratify beech forests with only the diameter at breast height measurement. Biodegradable packaging prepared from starch is an alternative to fossil-based plastic packaging. However, the properties of starch packaging do not comply with the necessary physicochemical properties to preserve food. Hence, in a previous study, we reported the preparation of a composite polymer material based on starch-chitosan-pluronic F127 that was found to be an adequate alternative packaging material. In this study, we modified the physicochemical properties of this material by storing it for 16 months under ambient conditions. The results indicate that the incorporation of pluronic F127 in the blend polymer can help avoid the retrogradation of starch. Moreover, at higher concentrations of pluronic F127, wettability is reduced. Finally, after storage, the materials exhibited surface modification, which is related to a color change and an increase in solubility, as well as a slight increase in stiffness. • A new formulation of starch-chitosan films with pluronic F127 was evaluated. • The use of pluronic F127 has not previously been used for biodegradable materials. • The incorporation of pluronic F127 improved the gas barrier of biodegradable films. • The solubility of the biopolymer films decreased with the presence of pluronic F127. Starch is an excellent alternative to produce packaging materials, however, due to its high hydrophilicity, it is necessary to mix it with other polymers. Chitosan (CTS) is a polymer extracted from shrimp shells and crabs, which can be used to make biodegradable materials. The principal component of biodegradable was corn starch and chitosan, the copolymer pluronic F127 was incorporated in several concentrations and its effect on the water vapor barrier, morphological, thermal, and mechanical properties of the films was evaluated, because its incorporation in the formulation of biodegradable materials could increase its hydrophobicity. The surface of starch-chitosan composite films obtained was more homogeneous and smoother with the increase in the content of pluronic F127. The %S and WVP of the starch-chitosan films decreased from 42 to 3%, and 21 × 10−11 to 3 × 10-14 g. m-1s-1 Pa-1, respectively, with the incorporation of pluronic from 3%, which makes these materials a good alternative for product packaging. Androgens in asthmatic men may be linked to asthma severity, acting via nongenomic and genomic effects. This ailment affects boys more than girls during infancy, and this proportion reverses in puberty. Plasmatic androgen concentration in young men increases at this age and might be related to lower asthma symptoms. Nongenomic actions occur in a brief period and are independent of the androgen receptor (AR), while genomic effects depend on AR, take hours-days and are modified by transcription or protein synthesis inhibitors. Guinea pig tracheas chronic incubation with testosterone (TES, 40 nM, 48 h) potentiates salbutamol-induced relaxation, an effect that was reversed by flutamide, not observed when tissues were pre-incubated with TES-bovine serum albumin (TES-BSA) nor when tissues were preincubated with TES for 15–60 min. In tracheal myocytes, TES chronic incubation increases salbutamol-induced K+ currents (IK+), an effect that was also reversed by flutamide, actinomycin D and cycloheximide and not seen with TES-BSA. The increment in IK+ was blocked by 4-aminopyridine and iberiotoxin, indicating that delayed rectifier K+ and high-conductance Ca2+ activated K+ channels were involved in the TES potentiation effect. Immunofluorescence studies showed that chronic TES augmented the β 2 adrenergic receptor (β 2 -AR) expression in ASM and this finding was corroborated by q-PCR and Western blot assays. β 2 -AR affinity for salbutamol after TES incubation was increased. In conclusion, chronic exposure to physiological TES concentration of the guinea pig ASM promotes β 2 -AR upregulation favoring β 2 adrenergic responses and probably limiting the severity of the asthmatic exacerbations in teenage boys and men. • In guineas pig airway smooth muscle, chronic testosterone exposure, at a physiological concentration: • Potentiates the relaxation induced by salbutamol. • Augments the K+ currents induced by this agonist. • Up regulates the β 2 adrenergic receptor. • Its plasmatic concentrations might be relevant to diminish asthma symptoms. • Urbanization is a threat to biodiversity conservation. • We quantified the effect of infrastructure and urbanization over steppic birds. • This study can be used to support conservation plans based on habitat connectivity. Urbanization is one of the agents that contribute most to habitat fragmentation and is therefore a threat to biodiversity conservation. Connectivity improvement is the adaptation strategy most often cited to address species conservation in a changing environment. Many studies of protection at local and regional level zones usually show separate portions of habitat, defining the protected area, but they do not provide guidance on where and how to act to preserve the habitat quality and connectivity of the populations, on a consistent scale with planning units. In this paper, the analysis of fragmentation-connectivity focuses on cereal steppes of the Jarama and Henares rivers (Spain) to study the habitat and connectivity of steppic birds populations into protected areas of the Natura 2000 network, quantifying the effect on this protected area and on the species of interest caused by the massive development of infrastructure and urbanization due to the expansion of Madrid metropolitan area. In this sense, the Great Bustard (Otis tarda) was used as a bioindicator, due to its high demand for habitat quality. The proposed methodology only needs to be based on data from wildlife sightings and land use. Once the variables (density, biophysics and urbanization) were defined, it was possible to determine the values of influence, applying them to generate the map of areas of probability of presence and movement of the Great Bustard. The modification of achira starch a thermoplastic biopolymer is shown. Glycerol and sorbitol, common plasticizers, were used in the molten state with organic acids such as oleic acid and lactic acid obtaining thermodynamically more stable products. The proportion of starch:plasticizer was 70:30, and the acid agent was added in portions from 3%, 6%, and 9% by weight. These mixtures were obtained in a torque rheometer for 10 min at 130 °C. The lactic acid managed to efficiently promote the gelatinization process by increasing the available polar sites towards the surface of the material; as a result, there were lower values in the contact angle, these results were corroborated with the analysis performed by differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction. The results derived from oscillatory rheological analysis had a viscous behavior in the thermoplastic starch samples and with the presence of acids; this behavior favors the transitions from viscous to elastic. The mixture of sorbitol or glycerol with lactic acid promoted lower values of the loss module, the storage module, and the complex viscosity, which means lower residual energy in the transition of the viscous state to the elastic state; this allows the compounds to be scaled to conventional polymer transformation processes.
