Neugebauer, Sabina Rak, Galloway, Emily Phillips, Dobbs, Christina L., Neugebauer, Sabina Rak, Galloway, Emily Phillips, and Dobbs, Christina L.
- Abstract
Use this unique volume to transform the learning and teaching of language so that all students are empowered to succeed. This book offers insight into how to teach language--a core component of developing skilled readers and writers across all content areas--in ways that value the rich and diverse language assets students bring to the classroom. The authors provide guidance to help K-12 teachers move beyond current approaches to teaching language in the classroom to support equitable student outcomes in both linguistically diverse and linguistically homogeneous classrooms. The text provides a step-by-step process to uncover conceptions of language and its instruction that undercut opportunities to learn. Readers will gain new strategies for teaching the language of school tasks while integrating students' distinctive language experiences as resources for learning. School leaders will learn how to implement a schoolwide exploration into teaching language that promotes equity, all while building collaboration among administrators, teachers, and students. This book: (1) Promotes linguistic equity by providing teaching strategies and whole-school practices critical for optimizing student success and access to instruction, assessment, and reading; (2) Provides classroom examples that show readers how to engage in the core practices described in the book across developmental levels and academic disciplines; (3) Includes reader-friendly and user-supportive features, such as text boxes that describe the principles that undergird the approaches; (4) Offers classroom vignettes depicting common instructional challenges and tensions to show how teachers can engage in equitable, evidence-based practices for student success; and (5) Uses reflection questions to help readers track their developing understanding of ideas and to reflect on their own values and teaching goals. 212. Evidence That a Greater Presence of Latinx Faculty or Administrators Raises the Completion Rates of Various Cohorts of Community College Students
- Author

Wassmer, Robert and Galloway, Meredith
- Abstract
Only a quarter of full-time U.S. students complete their desired goal from community college attendance, with the rate of success even lower for Latinx students. This panel-data regression study looks for evidence regarding the expected influence of increasing the presence of Latinx faculty or administrators on cohort completion rates for all students, only Latinx students, and sub-samples of these two cohort types divided further by economic advantage or college preparation. We find that a one-percentage-point increase in Latinx faculty among full-time instructors or a similar increase in Latinx representation among administrators positively influences nearly all cohort completion rates.

213. What Matters for Improving the Success Rates of Different Cohorts of Community College Students?
- Author

- Abstract
Objective: Six-year cohort completion rates calculated for California community college students--who declared their goal to obtain a certificate, associate degree, or become university transfer ready--averaged just below 50% for cohorts entering the fall semesters between 2007 and 2011. The range of this completion rate varied from 23% to 67%. This study's objective is to investigate how institutional choices at a community college influence the completion rates of different types of student cohorts after controlling for factors outside of the college's control. Method: We use panel-data regression analysis to understand what contributes to these variations in a community college's cohort completion rate. Results: Our results indicate that colleges prioritizing larger class sizes and fewer credit sections exhibit higher student cohort completion rates. We also find that an academic assistance program directed to low-income students boosts cohort completion rates for eligible students and generates positive spillover effects for their ineligible peers. Likely to create much discussion is our finding that an increase in faculty percentage with full-time status benefits academically unprepared and economically disadvantaged cohorts but not prepared and advantaged ones. Contribution: The primary contribution of this analysis is that college-specific policies on delivering education, over which college administrators have some control, can result in disparate impacts on different types of student cohort completion rates.

Most computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling of material extrusion additive manufacturing (MEX-AM) mainly relies on a moving boundary condition applied to the print bed and not the direct modelling of the motion of the nozzle. This paper presents step-by-step and detailed implementation of the nozzle motion as well as non-isothermal non-Newtonian flow during MEX-AM in Ansys Fluent. For nozzle motion the overset approach is used for the meshing which allows for the nozzle and the rest of the domain to be meshes separately, streamlining meshing and motion. The method is initially used to simulate a single strand, which was validated against experimental and numerical data. It was then applied to demonstrate out-of-plane nozzle motion in two case studies: three-layer printing and printing on a ramp. The model is further developed to simulate a single strand deposition with the well-known Cross–William–Landel–Ferry (Cross-WLF) behaviour for a thermal and shear-dependent material flow.

Background: Since October 2022, multiple high-income countries have reported an increase in invasive group A streptococcal (iGAS) infections. This study describes trends in iGAS infections in Aotearoa New Zealand (NZ) between 2017 and 2023, and examines associations of iGAS incidence, COVID-19 eras, and acute respiratory infections (ARI). Methods: Analyses include national-level surveillance data on iGAS and ARI. Multivariable Poisson regression was used to examine relationships between COVID-19 era and iGAS incidence, and Pearson pairwise correlations were calculated to examine trends between ARI and iGAS. Findings: A sharp increase in iGAS was observed in 2023, with notable increases among children aged under ten years. Indigenous Māori and Pacific peoples were disproportionately affected. emm1 and emm12 were commonly reported in 2022–2023. Compared to pre-pandemic, iGAS decreased significantly during the COVID-19 restrictions era and increased once COVID-19 restrictions were relaxed, after adjusting for ethnicity, sex, and age. ARI was moderately correlated with iGAS (r = 0∙55) in 2022–2023. Interpretation: Though delayed, NZ’s recent iGAS trends mirror those seen in the 2022/2023 multi-country iGAS surge. These findings expand existing research, suggesting a link between the easing of COVID-19 measures, increased ARI circulation, and the rise in iGAS. Medicine (General) ,R5-920 - Abstract
Early discharge and follow-up for medical admissions could facilitate reduced length of stay and improve patient satisfaction. However, evidence to confirm this is lacking. Peterborough City Hospital (PCH) designed an early ward discharge clinic (EWDC) service embedded within its acute medicine department to provide clinicians with the opportunity for a prompt clinical review following a hospital admission.Across three cycles, several interventions aimed to improve the utilisation of clinic, appropriateness of referrals and reduce the number of missed attendances. Our work has demonstrated that a service such as the EWDC can provide ample opportunity for early review of patients which could reduce the rate of readmissions and improve services. Interventions to date have improved the utilisation of the clinic, reduced the number of patients not being aware of appointments and provided training opportunities for junior clinicians. Data has also suggested a high level of patient satisfaction from using the service.Further research is needed to confirm the use of such services in reducing readmissions and mortality, however, results from clinics at individual units such as PCH provide useful insight until such data is available.

Medicine - Abstract
Introduction Climate change impacts the circumpolar region (including northern Canada) at a greater magnitude than other parts of the world. This affects food (in)security as well as food sovereignty. This scoping review aims to map the methods of measuring food (in)security and food sovereignty across northern Canada and the circumpolar region in support of the Yukon Government’s climate change adaptation strategy. Methods and analysis We will adhere to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews, and work will be conducted according to the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) manual chapter on scoping reviews. Academic librarians develop the academic literature and grey literature search strategies, and the search strategies are further revised through iterative stages of peer review. The search strategy includes 7 academic literature databases, 11 grey literature databases, over 50 websites and the University of Toronto Libraries catalogue. Covidence, an evidence synthesis software, will be used for screening and extraction. The extraction chart will be developed and piloted by our team. A minimum of two reviewers will conduct screening, and conflicts will be resolved through discussion. Data will be extracted by one reviewer and verified by a second. Conflicts will be resolved through discussion or by a third reviewer.Ethics and dissemination This project does not require ethical approval as it is secondary research; data will be extracted from published academic research papers, dissertations, and publicly available reports and documents. Our dissemination plan includes presentations at conferences, submission to international peer-reviewed journals and a workshop on the search strategies.

Medicine - Abstract
Objective Performance visualisation tools are increasingly being applied in healthcare to enhance decision-making and improve quality of care. However, there is a lack of comprehensive synthesis of their overall effectiveness and the contextual factors that influence their success in different clinical settings. This study aims to provide a broad synthesis of visualisation interventions not limited to a specific department.Design Systematic review.Data sources MEDLINE and Embase were searched until December 2022.Eligibility criteria Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) and observational studies in English involving a visualisation intervention, either alone or as a core intervention, that reported quantitative outcomes including process and outcome indicators.Data extraction and synthesis Data on study characteristics, intervention characteristics, outcome measures and results were extracted. The quality of evidence was assessed using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation approach, and risk of bias was evaluated with Risk of Bias 2 for RCTs and Risk of Bias in Non-randomised Studies - of Interventions for non-randomised studies. Results Of the 12 studies included, 2 were RCTs and 10 were observational studies, including 1 before-after study and 1 interrupted time series study. Five studies (42%) were conducted in teaching hospital settings. Compared with the control group or baseline, 10 studies reported a statistically significant change in at least one of their outcome measures. A majority of the studies reported a positive impact, including prescription adherence (6/10), screening tests (3/10) and monitoring (3/10). Visualisation tool factors like type, clinical setting, workflow integration and clinician engagement, may have some influence on the effectiveness of the intervention, but no reliable evidence was identified. Conclusion Performance visualisation tools have the potential to improve clinical performance indicators. More studies with standardised outcome measures and integrating qualitative methods are needed to understand the contextual factors that influence the effectiveness of these interventions.

Abstract A causal mechanism for the Volgian Isotopic Carbon Excursion (VOICE) remains enigmatic. Elemental geochemical profiles of the Deer Bay Formation, Sverdrup Basin, Arctic Canada that record the VOICE and contemporaneous strata are herein examined to provide insight into depositional environments during Late Jurassic‐Early Cretaceous time. Silver (Ag) and Cadmium (Cd) are enriched across the VOICE at localities on Axel Heiberg Island, and in Tithonian (∼Volgian) strata of Ellef Ringnes Island. Other redox‐sensitive trace elements do not exhibit spatially or temporally consistent patterns and indicate oxic conditions. A lack of relationship across the VOICE between Ag and the quality, quantity, and isotopic composition of organic matter suggests that the negative isotope excursion and interval of Ag enrichment are not merely functions of changes in organic matter source or amount, while a lack of spatially consistent change in geochemical indices of weathering similarly excludes climate change and/or sediment provenance as a driver. Therefore, in a ventilated setting and without marked changes in organic matter content, Ag enrichment may be due to hydrothermal activity. Contemporaneous Ag enrichment in strata from Svalbard suggests that a source of hot fluid sufficient to produce Ag‐rich seawater may have been related to rifting in the adjacent proto‐Amerasia Basin. Hydrothermal activity may also have been a widespread source of isotopically depleted carbon. This work develops new geochemical fingerprints that may be used to trace the spatial extent of hydrothermal events that do not leave an extinction pattern but may nonetheless have a far‐reaching influence on biogeochemical systems.

Developing an effective automatic classifier to separate genuine sources from artifacts is essential for transient follow-ups in wide-field optical surveys. The identification of transient detections from the subtraction artifacts after the image differencing process is a key step in such classifiers, known as real-bogus classification problem. We apply a self-supervised machine learning model, the deep-embedded self-organizing map (DESOM) to this "real-bogus" classification problem. DESOM combines an autoencoder and a self-organizing map to perform clustering in order to distinguish between real and bogus detections, based on their dimensionality-reduced representations. We use 32x32 normalized detection thumbnails as the input of DESOM. We demonstrate different model training approaches, and find that our best DESOM classifier shows a missed detection rate of 6.6% with a false positive rate of 1.5%. DESOM offers a more nuanced way to fine-tune the decision boundary identifying likely real detections when used in combination with other types of classifiers, for example built on neural networks or decision trees. We also discuss other potential usages of DESOM and its limitations.

End-to-end simulations play a key role in the analysis of any high-sensitivity CMB experiment, providing high-fidelity systematic error propagation capabilities unmatched by any other means. In this paper, we address an important issue regarding such simulations, namely how to define the inputs in terms of sky model and instrument parameters. These may either be taken as a constrained realization derived from the data, or as a random realization independent from the data. We refer to these as Bayesian and frequentist simulations, respectively. We show that the two options lead to significantly different correlation structures, as frequentist simulations, contrary to Bayesian simulations, effectively include cosmic variance, but exclude realization-specific correlations from non-linear degeneracies. Consequently, they quantify fundamentally different types of uncertainties, and we argue that they therefore also have different and complementary scientific uses, even if this dichotomy is not absolute. Before BeyondPlanck, most pipelines have used a mix of constrained and random inputs, and used the same hybrid simulations for all applications, even though the statistical justification for this is not always evident. BeyondPlanck represents the first end-to-end CMB simulation framework that is able to generate both types of simulations, and these new capabilities have brought this topic to the forefront. The Bayesian BeyondPlanck simulations and their uses are described extensively in a suite of companion papers. In this paper we consider one important applications of the corresponding frequentist simulations, namely code validation. That is, we generate a set of 1-year LFI 30 GHz frequentist simulations with known inputs, and use these to validate the core low-level BeyondPlanck algorithms; gain estimation, correlated noise estimation, and mapmaking.

The Gravitational-wave Optical Transient Observer (GOTO) is a wide-field telescope project focused on detecting optical counterparts to gravitational-wave sources. Each GOTO robotic mount holds eight 40 cm telescopes, giving an overall field of view of 40 square degrees. As of 2022 the first two GOTO mounts have been commissioned at the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory on La Palma, Canary Islands, and construction of the second node with two additional 8-telescope mounts has begin at Siding Spring Observatory in New South Wales, Australia. Once fully operational each GOTO mount will be networked to form a robotic, multi-site observatory, which will survey the entire visible sky every two nights and enable rapid follow-up detections of transient sources., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, submitted to SPIE Astronomical Telescopes + Instrumentation 2022

Astrophysics - Cosmology and Nongalactic Astrophysics - Abstract
We present Planck LFI frequency sky maps derived within the BeyondPlanck framework. This framework draws samples from a global posterior distribution that includes instrumental, astrophysical and cosmological parameters, and the main product is an entire ensemble of frequency sky map samples. This ensemble allows for computationally convenient end-to-end propagation of low-level instrumental uncertainties into higher-level science products. We show that the two dominant sources of LFI instrumental systematic uncertainties are correlated noise and gain fluctuations, and the products presented here support - for the first time - full Bayesian error propagation for these effects at full angular resolution. We compare our posterior mean maps with traditional frequency maps delivered by the Planck collaboration, and find generally good agreement. The most important quality improvement is due to significantly lower calibration uncertainties in the new processing, as we find a fractional absolute calibration uncertainty at 70 GHz of $\delta g_{0}/g_{0} =5 \cdot 10^{-5}$, which is nominally 40 times smaller than that reported by Planck 2018. However, the original Planck 2018 estimate has a non-trivial statistical interpretation, and this further illustrates the advantage of the new framework in terms of producing self-consistent and well-defined error estimates of all involved quantities without the need of ad hoc uncertainty contributions. We describe how low-resolution data products, including dense pixel-pixel covariance matrices, may be produced directly from the posterior samples without the need for computationally expensive analytic calculations or simulations. We conclude that posterior-based frequency map sampling provides unique capabilities in terms of low-level systematics modelling and error propagation, and may play an important role for future CMB B-mode experiments. Astrophysics - Cosmology and Nongalactic Astrophysics - Abstract
We present posterior sample-based cosmic microwave background (CMB) constraints from Planck LFI and WMAP observations derived through global end-to-end Bayesian processing. We use these samples to study correlations between CMB, foreground, and instrumental parameters, and we identify a particularly strong degeneracy between CMB temperature fluctuations and free-free emission on intermediate angular scales, which is mitigated through model reduction, masking, and resampling. We compare our posterior-based CMB results with previous Planck products, and find generally good agreement, but with higher noise due to exclusion of HFI data. We find a best-fit CMB dipole amplitude of $3362.7\pm1.4{\mu}K$, in excellent agreement with previous Planck results. The quoted uncertainty is derived directly from the sampled posterior distribution, and does not involve any ad hoc contribution for systematic effects. Similarly, we find a temperature quadrupole amplitude of $\sigma^{TT}_2=229\pm97{\mu}K^2$, in good agreement with previous results in terms of the amplitude, but the uncertainty is an order of magnitude larger than the diagonal Fisher uncertainty. Relatedly, we find lower evidence for a possible alignment between $\ell = 2$ and $\ell = 3$ than previously reported due to a much larger scatter in the individual quadrupole coefficients, caused both by marginalizing over a more complete set of systematic effects, and by our more conservative analysis mask. For higher multipoles, we find that the angular temperature power spectrum is generally in good agreement with both Planck and WMAP. This is the first time the sample-based asymptotically exact Blackwell-Rao estimator has been successfully established for multipoles up to $\ell\le600$, and it now accounts for the majority of the cosmologically important information. Cosmological parameter constraints are presented in a companion paper. (Abriged), Comment: 26 pages, 24 figures. Submitted to A&A. Part of the BeyondPlanck paper suite

We report on a blinded analysis of low-energy electronic-recoil data from the first science run of the XENONnT dark matter experiment. Novel subsystems and the increased 5.9 tonne liquid xenon target reduced the background in the (1, 30) keV search region to $(15.8 \pm 1.3)$ events/(tonne$\times$year$\times$keV), the lowest ever achieved in a dark matter detector and $\sim$5 times lower than in XENON1T. With an exposure of 1.16 tonne-years, we observe no excess above background and set stringent new limits on solar axions, an enhanced neutrino magnetic moment, and bosonic dark matter., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures. Understanding the chemical processes during starless core and prestellar core evolution is an important step in understanding the initial stages of star and disk formation. This project is a study of deuterated ammonia, o-NH$_2$D, in the L1251 star-forming region toward Cepheus. Twenty-two dense cores (twenty of which are starless or prestellar, and two of which have a protostar), previously identified by p-NH$_3$ (1,1) observations, were targeted with the 12m Arizona Radio Observatory telescope on Kitt Peak. o-NH$_2$D J$_{\rm{K_a} \rm{K_c}}^{\pm} =$ $1_{11}^{+} \rightarrow 1_{01}^{-}$ was detected in 13 (59\%) of the NH$_3$-detected cores with a median sensitivity of $\sigma_{T_{mb}} = 17$ mK. All cores detected in o-NH$_2$D at this sensitivity have p-NH$_3$ column densities $> 10^{14}$ cm$^{-2}$. The o-NH$_2$D column densities were calculated using the constant excitation temperature (CTEX) approximation while correcting for the filling fraction of the NH$_3$ source size. The median deuterium fraction was found to be 0.11 (including 3$\sigma$ upper limits). However, there are no strong, discernible trends in plots of deuterium fraction with any physical or evolutionary variables. If the cores in L1251 have similar initial chemical conditions, then this result is evidence of the cores physically evolving at different rates., Comment: 18 pages, 14 figures, MNRAS, in press

Estimating the Generalization Error (GE) of Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) is an important task that often relies on availability of held-out data. The ability to better predict GE based on a single training set may yield overarching DNN design principles to reduce a reliance on trial-and-error, along with other performance assessment advantages. In search of a quantity relevant to GE, we investigate the Mutual Information (MI) between the input and final layer representations, using the infinite-width DNN limit to bound MI. An existing input compression-based GE bound is used to link MI and GE. To the best of our knowledge, this represents the first empirical study of this bound. In our attempt to empirically falsify the theoretical bound, we find that it is often tight for best-performing models. Furthermore, it detects randomization of training labels in many cases, reflects test-time perturbation robustness, and works well given only few training samples. These results are promising given that input compression is broadly applicable where MI can be estimated with confidence., Comment: 12 pages main content, 26 pages total

We report the discovery of a circumplanetary disk (CPD) candidate embedded in the circumstellar disk of the T Tauri star AS 209 at a radial distance of about 200 au (on-sky separation of 1."4 from the star at a position angle of $161^\circ$), isolated via $^{13}$CO $J=2-1$ emission. This is the first instance of CPD detection via gaseous emission capable of tracing the overall CPD mass. The CPD is spatially unresolved with a $117\times82$ mas beam and manifests as a point source in $^{13}$CO, indicating that its diameter is $\lesssim14$ au. The CPD is embedded within an annular gap in the circumstellar disk previously identified using $^{12}$CO and near-infrared scattered light observations, and is associated with localized velocity perturbations in $^{12}$CO. The coincidence of these features suggests that they have a common origin: an embedded giant planet. We use the $^{13}$CO intensity to constrain the CPD gas temperature and mass. We find that the CPD temperature is $\gtrsim35$ K, higher than the circumstellar disk temperature at the radial location of the CPD, 22 K, suggesting that heating sources localized to the CPD must be present. The CPD gas mass is $\gtrsim 0.095 M_{\rm Jup} \simeq 30 M_{\rm Earth}$ adopting a standard $^{13}$CO abundance. From the non-detection of millimeter continuum emission at the location of the CPD ($3\sigma$ flux density $\lesssim26.4~\mu$Jy), we infer that the CPD dust mass is $\lesssim 0.027 M_{\rm Earth} \simeq 2.2$ lunar masses, indicating a low dust-to-gas mass ratio of $\lesssim9\times10^{-4}$. We discuss the formation mechanism of the CPD-hosting giant planet on a wide orbit in the framework of gravitational instability and pebble accretion., Comment: Accepted for publication in the ApJ Letters (July 7, 2022), 19 pages, 13 figures, interactive figures (Figure 7, 8, 9) are available at http://jaehanbae.com/as209/

Zebrafish (Danio rerio) are aquatic vertebrates with significant homology to their terrestrial counterparts. While zebrafish have a centuries-long track record in developmental and regenerative biology, their utility has grown exponentially with the onset of modern genetics. This is exemplified in studies focused on skeletal development and repair. Herein, the numerous contributions of zebrafish to our understanding of the basic science of cartilage, bone, tendon/ligament, and other skeletal tissues are described, with a particular focus on applications to development and regeneration. We summarize the genetic strengths that have made the zebrafish a powerful model to understand skeletal biology. We also highlight the large body of existing tools and techniques available to understand skeletal development and repair in the zebrafish and introduce emerging methods that will aid in novel discoveries in skeletal biology. Finally, we review the unique contributions of zebrafish to our understanding of regeneration and highlight diverse routes of repair in different contexts of injury. We conclude that zebrafish will continue to fill a niche of increasing breadth and depth in the study of basic cellular mechanisms of skeletal biology.

- Abstract
Creating meaningful learning environments that support university students in their early STEM courses has become a focus of interest for many universities. This research investigated an active learning environment where students used Ozobot robots to visualize complex concepts such as Metabolism, Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration in an Introductory Biology course. Three conditions were employed over three semesters including a Control, Non-reflective, and Reflective condition. In both the Non-Reflective and the Reflective condition, students programmed robots to visualize concepts in the three topics of interest. Quantitative analysis using Kruskal Wallis revealed significant differences on unit tests between the Reflective and the other two conditions. No difference was found between the Control and the Non-Reflective condition. Qualitative analysis revealed three themes Engagement, Visualization, and Social.

Radiolarians have proven to be exceptional tools in biostratigraphic and paleoenvironmental studies despite their relatively low preservation potential in the sedimentary record. Reports of Upper Cretaceous radiolarians in high northern latitudes are scant, and their taxonomy is not often discussed in the few reports available in the literature. In this study, we describe one new genus and three new species of polycystine radiolarians from Upper Cretaceous strata of the northern mainland coast of Arctic Canada. The specimens were recovered from the Santonian–middle Campanian Smoking Hills Formation and the middle Campanian–Maastrichtian Mason River Formation and are assigned to the genus Canadasphaera n. gen. (Order Spumellaria) and the species Canadasphaera inuita n. sp., Kuppelella rusti n. sp., and Lithocampe? rara n. sp. The taxonomic notes provided in this study improve our understanding of Late Cretaceous radiolarians from high northern latitudes and serve as a foundation for future Cretaceous radiolarian research in Arctic regions. Aims: Young adults undergoing total hip arthroplasty (THA) largely have different indications for surgery, preoperative function, and postoperative goals compared to a standard patient group. The aim of our study was to describe young adult THA preoperative function and quality of life, and to assess postoperative satisfaction and compare this with functional outcome measures. Methods: A retrospective cohort analysis of young adults (aged < 50 years) undergoing THA between May 2018 and May 2023 in a single tertiary centre was undertaken. Median follow-up was 31 months (12 to 61). Oxford Hip Score (OHS) and focus group-designed questionnaires were distributed. Searches identified 244 cases in 225 patients. Those aged aged under 30 years represented 22.7% of the cohort. Developmental dysplasia of the hip (50; 45.5%) and Perthes’ disease (15; 13.6%) were the commonest indications for THA. Results: Preoperatively, of 110 patients, 19 (17.2%) were unable to work before THA, 57 (52%) required opioid analgesia, 51 (46.4%) were reliant upon walking aids, and 70 (63.6%) had sexual activity limited by their pathology. One patient required revision due to instability. Mean OHS was 39 (9 to 48). There was a significant difference between the OHS of cases where THA met expectation, compared with the OHS when it did not (satisfied: 86 (78.2%), OHS: 41.2 (36.1%) vs non-satisfied: 24 (21%), OHS: 31.6; p ≤ 0.001). Only one of the 83 patients (75.5%) who returned to premorbid levels of activity did so after 12 months. Conclusion: Satisfaction rates of THA in young adults is high, albeit lower than commonly quoted figures. Young adults awaiting THA have poor function with high requirements for mobility aids, analgesia, and difficulties in working and undertaking leisure activities. The OHS provided a useful insight into patient function and was predictive of satisfaction rates, although it did not address the specific demands of young adults undertaking THA. Function at one year postoperatively is a good indication of overall outcomes. Cite this article: Bone Jt Open 2024;5(4):304–311.

The failure of deep neural networks to generalize to out-of-distribution data is a well-known problem and raises concerns about the deployment of trained networks in safety-critical domains such as healthcare, finance and autonomous vehicles. We study a particular kind of distribution shift $\unicode{x2013}$ shortcuts or spurious correlations in the training data. Shortcut learning is often only exposed when models are evaluated on real-world data that does not contain the same spurious correlations, posing a serious dilemma for AI practitioners to properly assess the effectiveness of a trained model for real-world applications. In this work, we propose to use the mutual information (MI) between the learned representation and the input as a metric to find where in training, the network latches onto shortcuts. Experiments demonstrate that MI can be used as a domain-agnostic metric for monitoring shortcut learning., Comment: Accepted at ICML 2022 Workshop on Spurious Correlations, Invariance, and Stability

We present ZodiPy, a modern and easy-to-use Python package for modeling the zodiacal emission seen by an arbitrary Solar System observer, which can be used for the removal of both thermal emission and scattered sunlight from interplanetary dust in astrophysical data. The code implements the COBE Diffuse Infrared Background Experiment (DIRBE) interplanetary dust model and the Planck extension, which allows for zodiacal emission predictions at infrared wavelengths in the 1.25-240 $\mu$m range and at microwave frequencies in the 30-857 GHz range. The predicted zodiacal emission may be extrapolated to frequencies and wavelengths not covered by the built-in models to produce forecasts for future experiments. ZodiPy attempts to enable the development of new interplanetary dust models by providing the community with an easy-to-use interface for testing both current and future models. We demonstrate how the software can be used by creating simulated zodiacal emission timestreams for the DIRBE experiment and show that these agree with corresponding timestreams produced with the DIRBE Zodiacal Light Prediction Software. We also make binned maps of the zodiacal emission as predicted to be observed by DIRBE and compare them with the DIRBE calibrated individual observations (CIO)., Comment: Accepted by A&A, 10 pages, 7 figures. In this paper we review and extend some results in the literature pertaining to spacetime topology while naturally utilizing properties of the codimension 2 null cut locus. Our results fall into two classes, depending on whether or not one assumes the presence of horizons. Included among the spacetimes we consider are those that apply to the asymptotically (locally) AdS setting., Comment: 24 pages, 1 figure. v2 accepted to JMP

The BeyondPlanck and Cosmoglobe collaborations have implemented the first integrated Bayesian end-to-end analysis pipeline for CMB experiments. The primary long-term motivation for this work is to develop a common analysis platform that supports efficient global joint analysis of complementary radio, microwave, and sub-millimeter experiments. A strict prerequisite for this to succeed is broad participation from the CMB community, and two foundational aspects of the program are therefore reproducibility and Open Science. In this paper, we discuss our efforts toward this aim. We also discuss measures toward facilitating easy code and data distribution, community-based code documentation, user-friendly compilation procedures, etc. This work represents the first publicly released end-to-end CMB analysis pipeline that includes raw data, source code, parameter files, and documentation. We argue that such a complete pipeline release should be a requirement for all major future and publicly-funded CMB experiments, noting that a full public release significantly increases data longevity by ensuring that the data quality can be improved whenever better processing techniques, complementary datasets, or more computing power become available, and thereby also taxpayers' value for money; providing only raw data and final products is not sufficient to guarantee full reproducibility in the future.

We present cosmological parameter constraints as estimated using the Bayesian BeyondPlanck (BP) analysis framework. This method supports seamless end-to-end error propagation from raw time-ordered data to final cosmological parameters. As a first demonstration of the method, we analyze time-ordered Planck LFI observations, combined with selected external data (WMAP 33-61GHz, Planck HFI DR4 353 and 857GHz, and Haslam 408MHz) in the form of pixelized maps which are used to break critical astrophysical degeneracies. Overall, all results are generally in good agreement with previously reported values from Planck 2018 and WMAP, with the largest relative difference for any parameter of about 1 sigma when considering only temperature multipoles between 29

We present results on the search for double-electron capture ($2\nu\text{ECEC}$) of $^{124}$Xe and neutrinoless double-$\beta$ decay ($0\nu\beta\beta$) of $^{136}$Xe in XENON1T. We consider captures from the K- up to the N-shell in the $2\nu\text{ECEC}$ signal model and measure a total half-life of $T_{1/2}^{2\nu\text{ECEC}}=(1.1\pm0.2_\text{stat}\pm0.1_\text{sys})\times 10^{22}\;\text{yr}$ with a $0.87\;\text{kg}\times\text{yr}$ isotope exposure. The statistical significance of the signal is $7.0\,\sigma$. We use XENON1T data with $36.16\;\text{kg}\times\text{yr}$ of $^{136}$Xe exposure to search for $0\nu\beta\beta$. We find no evidence of a signal and set a lower limit on the half-life of $T_{1/2}^{0\nu\beta\beta} > 1.2 \times 10^{24}\;\text{yr}\; \text{at}\; 90\,\%\;\text{CL}$. This is the best result from a dark matter detector without an enriched target to date. We also report projections on the sensitivity of XENONnT to $0\nu\beta\beta$. Assuming a $275\;\text{kg}\times\text{yr}$ $^{136}$Xe exposure, the expected sensitivity is $T_{1/2}^{0\nu\beta\beta} > 2.1 \times 10^{25}\;\text{yr}\; \text{at}\; 90\,\%\;\text{CL}$, corresponding to an effective Majorana mass range of $\langle m_{\beta\beta} \rangle < (0.19 - 0.59)\;\text{eV/c}^2$., Comment: 23 pages, 14 figures, 9 tables, version accepted for publication in Phys. We describe the upgrade and performance of the high-purity germanium counting facility Gator, which is dedicated to low-background $\gamma$-ray spectrometry. Gator is operated at the Gran Sasso Underground Laboratory in Italy, at an average depth of 3600 meter water equivalent, and employed for material screening and selection in ultra-low background, rare-event search experiments in astroparticle physics. The detector is equipped with a passive shield made of layers of copper, lead and polyethylene, and the sample cavity is purged with gaseous nitrogen maintained at positive pressure for radon suppression. After upgrading its enclosure, the background rate is (82.0$\pm$0.7) counts/(kg$\cdot$day) in the energy region 100 keV to 2700 keV, a 20% reduction compared to the previously reported rate. We show the stability of various operation parameters as a function of time. We also summarize the sample analysis procedure, and demonstrate Gator's sensitivity by examining one material sample, a candidate photosensor for the DARWIN experiment.

The precision of lattice QCD calculations has been steadily improving for some time and is now approaching, or has surpassed, the 1% level for multiple quantities. At this level QED effects, i.e. the fact that quarks carry electric as well as color charge, come into play. In this report we will summarise results from the first lattice QCD+QED computations of the properties of ground-state charmonium and bottomonium mesons by the HPQCD Collaboration., Comment: Contribution to the proceedings of the 19th International Conference on Hadron Spectroscopy and Structure (HADRON 2021). TP53 mutation is the most frequent genetic event in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), found in more than 80% of patients with human papillomavirus-negative disease. As mutations in the TP53 gene are associated with worse outcomes in HNSCC, novel therapeutic approaches are needed for patients with TP53-mutated tumors. The National Cancer Institute sponsored a Clinical Trials Planning Meeting to address the issues of identifying and developing clinical trials for patients with TP53 mutations. Subcommittees, or breakout groups, were tasked with developing clinical studies in both the locally advanced and recurrent and/or metastatic (R/M) disease settings as well as considering signal-seeking trial designs. A fourth breakout group was focused on identifying and standardizing biomarker integration into trial design; this information was provided to the other breakout groups prior to the meeting to aid in study development. A total of 4 concepts were prioritized to move forward for further development and implementation. This article summarizes the proceedings of the Clinical Trials Planning Meeting with the goal of developing clinical trials for patients with TP53-mutant HNSCC that can be conducted within the National Clinical Trials Network.

The pancreatic tumor microenvironment drives deregulated nutrient availability. Accordingly, pancreatic cancer cells require metabolic adaptations to survive and proliferate. Pancreatic cancer subtypes have been characterized by transcriptional and functional differences, with subtypes reported to exist within the same tumor. However, it remains unclear if this diversity extends to metabolic programming. Here, using metabolomic profiling and functional interrogation of metabolic dependencies, we identify two distinct metabolic subclasses among neoplastic populations within individual human and mouse tumors. Furthermore, these populations are poised for metabolic cross-talk, and in examining this, we find an unexpected role for asparagine supporting proliferation during limited respiration. Constitutive GCN2 activation permits ATF4 signaling in one subtype, driving excess asparagine production. Asparagine release provides resistance during impaired respiration, enabling symbiosis. Functionally, availability of exogenous asparagine during limited respiration indirectly supports maintenance of aspartate pools, a rate-limiting biosynthetic precursor. Conversely, depletion of extracellular asparagine with PEG-asparaginase sensitizes tumors to mitochondrial targeting with phenformin.
