Abstract

The aim of this study is to present possible solutions for improving efficiency in food industry in Bulgaria. In order to achieve this goal, the Cobb-Douglas production function was used, combined with regression models applied to the food industry' sub-sectors. Earnings before interest and tax is determined to be a function of selected income and cost factors. Panel data from a stratified statistically complex sample of Bulgarian enterprises in the food industry for the period 2012-2016 were used. It should be noted that the choice of this type of function was determined by the small number of measurements of the dynamics of the productive factors and results. Cobb-Douglas production function implies the estimation of a small number of precisely defined parameters -- ceteris paribus - determines the greater representativeness and significance of the output results. In order to achieve a higher degree of detail in the analysis of the factor influences on the observed economic results, various/optional solutions and possibilities for increasing the efficiency of the sector through linear regression dependencies were determined. Positive relationships was found between earnings before interest and tax, on the one hand, and sales of finished product and goods, and payroll costs, on the other hand, confirm the maximization profits theory. Abstract

In this study, we describe a defect of the right orbit, which affects the lateral surface and part of the orbital apex. The defect was observed on a skull from the medieval town of Kabyle, Southeastern Bulgaria (12th - 14th century). The skull belonged to a female at the beginning of adulthood (20-25 years). The orbital defect was observed macroscopically and via industrial µCT imaging. It represents an excision with a semilunar shape of the orbital surface in the greater wing of sphenoid bone. The margin of the excised part is relatively smooth with oblique inclination. The most probable causes this orbital defect could be an orbitocranial trauma or orbital trepanation due to some orbital pathological condition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Background: The aim of the study is to measure the facial soft tissue thicknesses (STTs) in Bulgarians, to evaluate the relation of the STTs to the nutritional status, sex and bilateral asymmetry, and to examine the correlations between the separate STTs as well as between the STTs and body weight, height, and body mass index (BMI). In the present study, the facial STTs were measured on computed tomography scans of the head of Bulgarian adults.Materials and Methods: The STTs were measured at 7 midline and 9 bilateral landmarks. The measurements were performed in the free software InVesalius in the axial and sagittal planes. The mean, standard deviation, minimum and maximum values, median and coefficient of variation were reported for the STT at each landmark according to the sex and BMI category. The BMI, sex and bilateral differences were assessed for statistical significance. Pearson correlation analysis was applied to assess the strength and direction of the relationships between the STTs and body height, weight and BMI, as well as between separate STTs.Results and Conclusions: The facial soft tissues in Bulgarian adults changed in accordance with the nutritional status of the individual and in both sexes all STTs augmented with the increasing BMI. For both normal and overweight BMI categories, males had more soft tissue at the majority of facial points than females, as the only exceptions were observed in the cheek zone, where STTs were thicker in females. Significant bilateral differences were observed in either sex and BMI category. Stronger correlations were established for the STTs in the jaw region and between the cheek and jaw soft tissues. 212. Digital radiomorphometric analysis of the frontal sinus and assessment of the relation between persistent metopic suture and frontal sinus development.

Abstract

Objectives: This study aimed to establish the frequency of the frontal sinus (FS) aplasia, to compare metopic and nonmetopic series and thus to assess the relationship between the preservation of metopic suture and FS development. Materials and methods: FSs were investigated in 230 dry skulls of adult males distributed into control (137) and metopic (93) series. They were visualized through industrial digital radiography. Results: In the control series, the FS aplasia was observed in 12.41% of the skulls, and it was mostly unilateral (8.76%) than bilateral (3.65%). The left-sided aplasia (5.11%) slightly prevailed over the right-sided one (3.65%). In the metopic series, the aplasia was observed with a frequency of 19.35%, and the bilateral aplasia (7.53%) was rarer that the unilateral one (11.83%), while the right-sided aplasia was clearly predominant (9.68%) compared to the left-sided one (2.15%). Discussion: The significant differences between both series showed a tendency for the persistence of metopic suture to be frequently related with FS underdevelopment in the vertical plate of the frontal bone, but in cases of pneumatization, it was preferentially on the left side. Taking into account that the cranial hypertension leads to suture diastasis and hinders development of the FS, it could be suggested that persistence of the metopic suture along with underdevelopment of the FS in nonsyndromic adults could be an expression of an elevated intracranial pressure during early development as an after-effect of certain condition. Abstract

International audience; We present a new kinematic and strain model of an area encompassing the Calabrian and Hellenic subduction zones, western Anatolia and the Balkans. Using Haines and Holt's (1993) method, we derive continuous velocity and strain rate fields by interpolating geodetic velocities, including recent GPS data in the Balkans. Relative motion between stable Eurasia and the western Aegean Sea is gradually accommodated by distributed N-S extension from Southern Balkans to the Eastern Corinth Gulf, so that the westward propagation of the North Anatolian Fault (NAF) throughout continental Greece or Peloponnesus is not required. We thus propose that the NAF terminates in north Aegean and that N-S extension localized in the Corinth Gulf and distributed in Southern Balkans is due to the retreat of the Hellenic slab. The motion of the Hyblean plateau, Apulia Peninsula, south Adriatic Sea, Ionian Basin and Sirte plain can be minimized by a single rigid rotation around a pole located in the Sirte plain, compatible with the opening the Pelagian rifts (2–2.5 mm/yr) and seismotectonics in Libya. We interpret the trenchward ultraslow motion of the Calabrian arc (2–2.5 mm/yr) as pure collapse, the Calabrian subduction being now inactive. In the absolute plate motion reference frame, our modeled velocity field depicts two toroïdal crustal patterns located at both ends of the Hellenic subduction zone, clockwise in NW Greece and counter-clockwise in western Anatolia. We suggest the NW Greece toroïdal pattern is the surface expression of a slab tear and consequent toroïdal asthenospheric flow.

Abstract

V 21. stoletju, v katerem živimo danes, so spletne strani nekaj povsem običajnega, osnovna komponenta vsakega podjetja. Vsako podjetje potrebuje spletno stran iz različnih razlogov, odvisno od panoge, s katero se ukvarja. Z naraščanjem števila spletnih strani sorazmerno narašča tudi število sistemov za upravljanje s spletnimi vsebinami (v nadaljevanju CMS sistemi). V diplomski nalogi smo predstavili najbolj razširjene CMS sisteme. Tema naloge je primerjati CMS sisteme med seboj, določiti kriterije in jih ovrednotiti, določiti funkcijo koristnosti in prikaz stopnje uporabnosti posameznega CMS sistema. Odločitveni model namlahko koristi za nadaljnjo analiziranje CMS sistemov. S pomočjo tega modela lahko primerjamo katerekoli druge CMS sisteme. Every company needs a website for different reasons, depending on which branch is involved. With the growing number of sites proportional increase the number of systems for managing web content (hereinafter referred to as CMS). The thesis presents the most widely used CMS. The theme of the tasks is to compare the CMS systems, determining the criteria, evaluation criteria, see the utility of each CMS. Decision model can benefit us for further analysis of CMS systems. Using the decision model can be compared to any other CMS systems.

Abstract

We study preconditioning techniques for discontinuous Galerkin discretizations of isotropic linear elasticity problems in primal (displacement) formulation. We propose subspace correction methods based on a splitting of the vector valued piecewise linear discontinuous finite element space, that are optimal with respect to the mesh size and the Lamé parameters. The pure displacement, the mixed and the traction free problems are discussed in detail. We present a convergence analysis of the proposed preconditioners and include numerical examples that validate the theory and assess the performance of the preconditioners.

Abstract

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDA) is a lethal disease, with surgery being the only curative modality for localized disease, and gemcitabine with or without erlotinib remains the standard of therapy for unresectable or metastatic disease. CEACAM6 is overexpressed in human PDA independent of stage or grade and causes anoikis resistance when dysregulated. Because murine monoclonal antibody 13-1 possesses target-specific cytotoxicity in human PDA cell lines, we designed a humanized anti-CEACAM6 single-chain variable fragment (scFv) based on monoclonal antibody 13-1. PEGylation of the glycine-serine linker was used to enhance plasma half-life. These scFvs bound CEACAM6 with high affinity, exhibited cytotoxic activity, and induced dose-dependent poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase cleavage. Murine PDA xenograft models treated with humanized scFv alone elicited tumor growth inhibition, which was enhanced in combination with gemcitabine. Immunohistochemistry showed significant apoptosis, with inhibition of angiogenesis and proliferation, and preservation of the target. Collectively, our results have important implications for the development of novel antibody-based therapies against CEACAM6 in PDA.

224. Multilevel preconditioning of graph-Laplacians : Polynomial approximation of the pivot blocks' inverses

Abstract

We consider the discrete system resulting from mixed finite element approximation of a second-order elliptic boundary value problem with Crouzeix-Raviart non-conforming elements for the vector valued unknown function and piece-wise constants for the scalar valued unknown function. Since the mass matrix corresponding to the vector valued variables is diagonal, these unknowns can be eliminated exactly. Thus, the problem of designing an efficient algorithm for the solution of the resulting algebraic system is reduced to one of constructing an efficient algorithm for a system whose matrix is a graph-Laplacian (or weighted graph-Laplacian). We propose a preconditioner based on an algebraic multilevel iterations (AMLI) algorithm. The hierarchical two-level transformations and the corresponding 2× 2 block splittings of the graph-Laplacian needed in an AMLI algorithm are introduced locally on macroelements. Each macroelement is associated with an edge of a coarser triangulation. To define the action of the preconditioner we employ polynomial approximations of the inverses of the pivot blocks in the 2× 2 splittings. Such approximations are obtained via the best polynomial approximation of x-1 in L∞ norm on a finite interval. Our construction provides sufficient accuracy and moreover, guarantees that each pivot block is approximated by a positive definite matrix polynomial. One possible application of the constructed efficient preconditioner is in the numerical solution of unsteady Navier-Stokes equations by a projection method. It can also be used to design efficient solvers for problems corresponding to other mixed finite element discretizations.

Abstract

High Performance Computing (HPC) is required for many important applications in chemistry, computational fluid dynamics, etc., see, e.g., an overview in [1]. In this paper we shortly describe an application (a multiscale material design problem) that requires HPC for several reasons. The problem of interest is analysis of the fiber-reinforced concrete and we focus on modelling of stiffness through numerical homogenization and computing local material properties by inverse analysis. Both problems require a repeated solution of large-scale finite element problems up to 200 million degrees of freedom and therefore the importance of HPC computing is evident.

Abstract

Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate the effect of fish oil (FO) and krill oil (KO) supplementation on glucose tolerance in obese New Zealand white rabbits. Methods: The experiments were carried out with 24 male rabbits randomly divided into four groups: KO-castrated, treated with KO; FO-castrated, treated with FO; C-castrated, non-treated; NC-non-castrated, non-treated. At the end of treatment period (2 months), an intravenous glucose tolerance test (IVGTT) was performed in all rabbits. Results: Fasting blood glucose concentrations in FO and KO animals were significantly lower than in group C. The blood glucose concentrations in FO- and KO-treated animals returned to initial values after 30 and 60 min of IVGTT, respectively. In liver, carnitine palmitoyltransferase 2 ( Cpt2) and 3-hydroxy-3-methyl-glutaryl-CoA synthase 2 ( Hmgcs2) genes were significantly increased in FO-fed rabbits compared with the C group. Acetyl-CoA carboxylase alpha ( Acaca) expression was significantly reduced in both KO- and FO-fed rabbits. In skeletal muscle, Hmgcs2 and Cd36 were significantly higher in KO-fed rabbits compared with the C group. Acaca expression was significantly lower in KO- and FO-fed rabbits compared with the C group. Conclusion: The present results indicate that FO and KO supplementation decreases fasting blood glucose and improves glucose tolerance in obese New Zealand white rabbits. This could be ascribed to the ameliorated insulin sensitivity and insulin secretion and modified gene expressions of some key enzymes involved in β-oxidation and lipogenesis in liver and skeletal muscle.
