They thought the “Mansion House” was rather a dark place for{8} the Lord Mayor to live in. They could detect no bridges through the twilight of “Westminster Bridge,” nor any promising park in “St. James'Park Station.” They could only suppose that they were in the crypts of “The Temple”; or buried under the foundations of “The Tower.”'

The book traces in some detail Shaw's work as a critic (puritanical opposition to Shakespeare) and as a dramatist. G K Chesterton was ideally placed to write this critical biography of the literary works and political views of George Bernard Shaw. He was a personal friend and yet an ardent opponent of Shaw's progressive socialism. The lightness of tone and the humour of his other works are equally present in his examination of Shaw. The book presents a perceptive and far from dated critique of Shaw's philosophy and politics and through them the emerging progressive orthodoxy of the 20 century. The Flying Inn is a novel by G. K. Chesterton, first published in 1914. It is set in a future England where the temperance movement has allowed a bizarre form of'Progressive'Islam to dominate the political and social life of the country. Because of this, alcohol sales to the poor are effectively prohibited, while the rich can get alcoholic drinks'under a medical certificate'. The plot centres on the adventures of Humphrey Pumph (see also the Humphrey pump) and Captain Patrick Dalroy, who roam the country in their cart with a barrel of rum in an attempt to evade Prohibition, exploiting loopholes in the law to temporarily prevent the police taking action against them. Eventually the heroes and their followers foil an attempted coup by an Islamic military force.

This little volume compresses eight years of education into a compact, highly entertaining read. It helps if you have read something by Dickens, Tennyson, and Browning, but don't worry if you haven't. Chesterton is simply a great master of the essay and English prose. (Goodreads)

Yet they have this amount of unity in their wandering, that they all imply that it is only a more traditional spirit that is truly able to wander. The wild theorists of our time are quite unable to wander. When they talk of making new roads, they are only making new ruts. Each of them is necessarily imprisoned in his own curious cosmos; in other words, he is limited by the very largeness of his own generalization. The explanations of the Marxian must not go outside economics; and the student of Freud is forbidden to forget sex. To see only the fanciful side of these serious sects may seem a very frivolous pleasure; and I will not dispute that these are very frivolous criticisms. I only submit that this frivolity is the last lingering form of freedom.'

The Queen of Seven Swords is a rare book of poems by G. K. Chesterton, focused on Mary, the mother of Jesus. It is a volume of poems that Chesterton published in 1926, the title being a reference to the second chapter of Luke's Gospel.
